Fox Catches a Beating For Cutting Into Phillies-Mets to Show the At-Bats of a Guy Fresh off Suspension
Baseball, Media Gossip/Musings July 6th. 2009, 4:15pm
Has FOX ever cut into a regular season game to show the at-bat of any player who wasn’t on the verge of setting a record? One of the most e-mailed topics this weekend – besides the Steve McNair tragedy – was about how FOX interrupted the Mets-Phillies game Saturday to show the at-bats of cheater Manny Ramirez in his 2nd game back against Padres. (Manny homered in his first at-bat for his only hit.)
As one would expect, Phillies and Mets fans were outraged. Cut-in for a milestone yes; a random game in July, no. Even Tim McCarver wondered what the hell was going on.
Said Fox’s Tim McCarver after that homer: “Why all the adulation for a guy who has served a 50-game suspension. … (Fox) jumped right on the wagon too.”
Is this the first time McCarver’s been right since Deion dumped water on him during the ‘92 NLCS? Also, if you follow that link you’ll note that McCarver and ManRam have a testy history. Those two (and Joe Torre) should make the Yankees-Dodgers World Series all the more enjoyable.

That fucker went Yard though. Got me fantasy points. Good Job Fox.
July 6th, 2009 at 4:20 PM
bush league, Mets fans probably welcomed this though.
July 6th, 2009 at 4:26 PM
It was silly that they did it…but outrage??? In the grand scheme of things it was pretty friggin’ meaningless.
July 6th, 2009 at 4:27 PM
im surprised phillies and mets fans took time out of banging dudes to notice
July 6th, 2009 at 4:28 PM
awesome.

Am I alone in favor of that waterboading of Tim McCarver?

no.

Primetime could do no wrong in Atlanta before that incident, but that sealded the deal. He has a lifetime free pass no matter what he does.

It’s been done several times, proving he’s a witch. However, he inevitably uses his powers to escape, moving onto the next town where he will seduce some of the youth with his relevant stories and caustic wit.

Raffy Palmeiro was right about Manny

While both are vile groups of people I have found Giants fans to be the perfect combination of arrogance and idiocy. They are like a well aged wine of douchebaggery.

Gawd, that was funny.

Mostly because they would swear on the life of their children that Eli is a fantastic quarterback.

Doesn’t FOX still have a chunk of ownership in the Dodgers?
/no surprise networks pimp their own product.
July 6th, 2009 at 4:54 PM
so people love manny? what’s wrong with that?
July 6th, 2009 at 4:56 PM
I was also hoping for live cut ins of JC Romero after his suspension. Come on, Fox! ESPN’s just as bad, showing us Manny’s at bats in the mother effing minor leagues.

Because interrupting a nationally televised game for two teams to show the at bats of a single player on another team is to put the player above all else in what is probably, along with football, the most essential team sport in this country. It puts the non-accomplishments of someone who was suspended for 50 games above a game featuring two teams with pennant aspirations (yes I know the Mets have sucked lately, but the NL East is still wide open). It’s Fox convincing us that personality is more important than playing by the rules.
July 6th, 2009 at 5:08 PM
is this any different than CNN morphing into the Michael Jackson network for 2 weeks at the expense of almost all other news? The sad thing is, their ratings have sucked, and they will have the highest month they’ve had in about three years

Too late, I strained a ligament when I landed and will be put on the 15 day DL. Might have to fly to Birmingham and have Dr. James Andrew look at it.

Everyone is giving this a pass!?!? What the hell? I’m saying it right now…there is a 0% chance that the Dodgers make the World Series. ZERO. Peaked wayyyyyyyyyyyy too early.
I’ll take a late charging NL East team or even the Giants to win the pennant in the NL. Look at the history of the best records in the league over the last few years. Almost never win the Fall Classic. Like the curse of the President’s Cup in hockey.
Yankees…if they make the playoffs, 100% chance they win the World Series.

I’m not sure I completely understand this. Baseball is a team sport played and won by individuals. Locker room chemistry and getting along with your teammates isn’t a prerequisite for successful baseball teams. If you’re saying that baseball, along with football, is important to the public as a team sport, I agree with you there.

ever since this “cable tv” thingy came out jpq hasnt got past channel 26.

then what am I paying DirecTV $150/month for???
July 6th, 2009 at 5:24 PM
That’s a MASSIVE bill. Do you get the all-portugese soccer package or something?
July 6th, 2009 at 5:26 PM
those $14.99 porn add up dont they?
July 6th, 2009 at 5:28 PM
a late charging NL East team = Braves
SC, so you are picking the Yanks only if they make it to the playoffs? Is the pitching going to be different then?

That’s part of what I meant. I was also attempting to make a comparison–and failing badly at it apparently–to the fact that both football and baseball require players who have heavily specialized skill sets which they use to better the overall performance of their team: DB’s in football are fast and change lateral direction well. WR’s are fast and have good hands and know how to run routes. O-linemen are big, shift laterally well, can read defensive intentions, know how to use their hands in blocking, etc. In baseball, infielders learn to shift to certain batters, turn double plays, shift for bunts, etc. Pitchers, catchers, leadoff guys, cleanup hitters, all have different roles which they integrate in order to help the team win.

MATTRYAN, I hope for both of our sakes that the next couple of days work out well. I imagine if they don’t, we’ll hear from some of the Northside folks around these parts.
July 6th, 2009 at 5:32 PM
True.
-but in terms of importance-
football’s sum of working parts >>>>>>>>>>>>> Baseball’s sum of working parts
July 6th, 2009 at 5:33 PM
I know, a strange way to pick it, but yes. If they make the playoffs, they win the WS. Actually not worried about the pitching. You only need 3 starters to win in the playoffs. I’ll take CC, Pettitte and Burnett. Joba can start a game 4 in the LCS and WS.
July 6th, 2009 at 5:34 PM
Damn straight. Randy Wells tonight!
Chipper is still recovering from the Natinals (sic’d) setting off the fireworks too early in DC this weekend.

those $14.99 porn add up dont they?
no porn even!
5 receivers/month w/ HD on one,$99/month package, and I think the Sunday Ticket “prebill is starting (4 payments).
Wait til you get old!!
July 6th, 2009 at 5:39 PM
Manny’s tale is a tale of overcoming adversity-
Not being wanted by his old team
No proper bathroom facilities in outfield
Can not get enough tickets from traveling secretayr.
Finding little interest in the off season from other teams
Settling below market value
Possible faulty drug testing
I watched, no I gazed through tear soaked eyes when he batted.
~sob~
July 6th, 2009 at 5:42 PM
We’ll see, but I like having solid relievers and a solid closer as well.
Joba can start a game 4 in the LCS and WS.
All sweeps??
July 6th, 2009 at 5:46 PM
No, not all sweeps. CC, Pettitte, Burnett, Joba, CC, Pettitte, Burnett. That’s your 7 game rotation. And, they have the best closer in the history of post-season baseball.
Yes, Phil Coke and Brian Bruney aren’t great, but they’re manageable. Red Sox bullpen has been awful, even Paps. Okajima looks like a flash in the pan.
July 6th, 2009 at 5:54 PM
Well SC, you get JJ tonight. Dude’s the next Maddux. And, the Braves starting pitching gives them an advantage over every team in the NL East. And, Huddy could be back in August or September. If you’re picking a horse, the smart money goes on the Braves.
July 6th, 2009 at 6:04 PM
basketball requires far more teamwork than baseball, as does hockey. Baseball is the least teamy of the big sports.
July 6th, 2009 at 6:36 PM
JJ is more like Smoltz than Maddux. Doesn’t quite have Maddux control but has Smoltz stuff.
July 6th, 2009 at 7:16 PM
The Yankees would kill for that awwwwwful 1.75 ERA.
July 6th, 2009 at 7:34 PM
I’d say Hanson is more in the Smoltz mold. Filthy stuff. JJ is a bit of a hybrid, but probably skews slightly more toward the control end of the spectrum.
