Who Killed Steve McNair?
Death, NFL retirees July 6th. 2009, 10:15am
We’re sitting at a picnic table chowing down prior to the fireworks when we picked up our phone and scanned twitter to find this stunner: “WSMV confirms that McNair was murdered in downtown Nashville. Was shot and killed by his wife, and then the wife killed herself.” Relayed that to a few people at the table, and their jaws hit the floor with a thud. Fortunately, the wife part was incorrect.
Then we checked email and read this shocking report: “According to the same NashvillePost.com sources, a white woman in her early 20s, around 5-foot-4, approached McNair at the restaurant and accused him of slipping her a ‘roofie’ a year ago. The woman then told McNair, according to sources, that her boyfriend was going to kill him.” That one hasn’t been shot down by police yet.
The former Pro Bowler QB and the cute 20-year-old he was cheating on his wife with have been dead for 48 hours and there still hasn’t been an arrest. Perhaps we’re in the minority, but we don’t think she killed him. Over what? Him not getting a divorce? Him breaking up with her? Where’d she get the gun? (A reader scanned the state’s gun permit database and she didn’t own one; McNair did.) Her co-workers, neighbors and family all paint her as a saint whose only flaw appeared to be that she was dating a married man.
Our money’s on her jilted ex-boyfriend being somehow connected or the mysterious boyfriend of the girl who allegedly made the ‘roofie’ claim.

i read that it was a murder-suicide, but the site had a bad link to the story.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:20 AM
I think you’re underestimating the well established, factually solid “all women are crazy” theory.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:22 AM
Speculate on the reasons behind the death of two people with access to very little information to support any such speculation? OH I forgot this was the internet.

Nashville authorities have declared McNair’s death a homicide, but have stopped short of saying the girl next to him committed suicide.
Gee…2 shots to the chest and 2 to the head sounds like suicide to me. Or it could have been accidental.
/sarcasm
Right now, no one knows anything. Was this girl a mistress? Was she something else? Who knows?
July 6th, 2009 at 10:25 AM
The female was Iranian, right? That’s not white.
/trying to avoid the black athlete/white girlfriend stereotype
July 6th, 2009 at 10:25 AM
I’m not even sure who shot J.R.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:26 AM
My GF said this sounds like a real life version of a Lifetime Movie.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:27 AM
TMZ has pics of them on vacation together
The Escalade has been reported to belong to her and McNair
Witnesses tell police that he was always there.
Hell, police even said she was his girlfriend.
It’s a pretty safe assumption by now.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:28 AM
She was kinda thick, though.
/Fits another stereotype
July 6th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
I guessing that they didn’t find any GSR on her hand, even though the gun was underneath her.

Because the moral is husband’s that cheat on their wives with twenty year olds end up dead?

What kind of odds did Vegas give you?
July 6th, 2009 at 10:31 AM
It was a one armed man.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:32 AM
the family of the girl says mcnair was getting a divorce and then we hear about mcnairs wife having no knowledge of the affair and being shocked about it. Maybe she didnt know about it but she shouldnt be shocked. Getting a divorce is a free pass to fuck anything that moves even before the divorce is final in my opinion
July 6th, 2009 at 10:33 AM
Sad story on several levels. I don’t buy the murder-suicide theory. Love and infidelity make people do crazy things.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:34 AM
BULLSHIT
July 6th, 2009 at 10:36 AM
McNair had 4 gunshots, she had 1. The gun was also found underneath her. This indicates to me that it was a murder/suicide unless someone was trying to frame her.

They havent called it a murder/suicide yet but they said on the very first day that they were not actively looking for a suspect. Whats going on here?
July 6th, 2009 at 10:40 AM
McNair’s wife may have been in denial, but if she didn’t know about it, she was the only one.
If I’m gone more than 45 minutes without saying anything, my wife checks up on me. This guy’s at this apartment (allegedly) more than he’s at home, and he’s taking vacations that she doesn’t know about? She’s not trying very hard to find out.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:42 AM
I love the fact that he and a buddy had a downtown shag shack, smart move.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:45 AM
I read about the one shot to the head and immediately assumed it was a murder-suicide. If someone is framing her, that is some diabolical shit right there.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
No matter how this shakes out, this is definitely becoming a Law and Order episode right?
July 6th, 2009 at 10:51 AM
I’d say anything less for you guys would be unacceptable.

Let’s make this as politically charged as possible– Muslim honor killing.

Three more celebrity deaths, and their entire season writes itself

The McNair house was put on the market last week, and there are a lot of indications that they were getting a divorce pretty soon. If I had to guess I’d say he was leaving his wife, but not for a 20 year old waitress from Dave and Busters. He was probably dumping her and this is how it ended up. It’s all just speculation right now.
However he was murdered, it shouldn’t overshadow what McNair accomplished on the field and in the Nashville community, because he did a ton for us. He was Nashville’s first black superstar and was giving back to the city till the day he was murdered. It’s impossible to put into words how much he meant to Titans fans and Tennesseans at large.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:52 AM
Dick Wolf probably already has this episode written. This has “Criminal Intent” all over it.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:55 AM
well said.
safe to assume – picking up a conversation from last week – that he and the wife didn’t share bank accounts? prolly tough to buy a Escalade for the side girl without the wife knowing
July 6th, 2009 at 10:56 AM
Which means we forgive his penis’s need for young strange.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:57 AM
I suspect foul play.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:01 AM
lot of weird stuff in this case to fuel the fire of the conspiracy theorists:
1) chick had a troubled background and seemed from reports a bit off her rocker.
2) dude that discovered bodies didn’t call 911 for 35 minutes which leads people to believe he was “cleaning up.”
3) cops found the gun under her body. that doesn’t usually happen in suicides.
4) what else was mcnair up to if he was able to keep this elicit affair from his wife?
5) if the chick was crazy and did pull the trigger, she’s one helluva shot to plug mcnair four times without missing for being that emotional.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:03 AM
Also, if you’re going to hammer a dead man for cheating on his wife then you’d be wise to just give up liking sports, music, movies and just about anything else that brings fame these days.
I’m not a fan of it, but it ain’t my life either.

I actually question the use of the term cute to describe this girl. Definitely not my cup o’ tea.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:09 AM
Murder-suicide, according to brother, for now.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:09 AM
Explain why that is “fortunate”. It’s only fortunate for the wife, not anyone else.

July 6th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
Seems to me it was McNair that was doing the hammering.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:13 AM
I tried to tell my wife this, but she had no part of it. I also told her that he and his posse were hanging out at Dave & Busters instead of strip clubs, but she didn’t care about that either.
I don’t think people don’t really know what it’s like out there, or they’re in more denial than McNair’s wife.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:13 AM
Maybe the wife killed him because she was embarassed by his low standards.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:20 AM
natural causes.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:22 AM
According to the female victim’s sister (or cousin/sister), she would never kill anybody. So that clears that up.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:23 AM
I’m guessing she shot him, went to put her hands on top of her head to mock his dumb ass celebration, and the gun accidentally went off killing her.
July 6th, 2009 at 11:24 AM
more from the cousin/sister:
Her greatest dream, Salmani said, was to be famous. I think she is now, she’s everywhere.

you know, just once, outside of jeffrey dahmer, i’d love for a neighbor, when being interviewed by “the media” about a suspect, would say, “you know, that SOB was crazier than a mountain lion with rabies. every time i saw the crazy bastard i’d run into the house. i knew it was a matter of time before he went postal on someone.”

Regarding the emotional distress of the 20-year-old and her ability to fire a weapon…Maybe McNair had already broken up with her and was coming by to get some stuff from the condo. He probably thought she was going to get over it — wrong.
And as for the four shots: she could have shot him in the chest first and the force of those shots could have knocked him over, which would make it incredibly easy for anyone to come up and plug him twice in the head.
You’d think the detectives would’ve completed a liquid paraffin to determine if the 20-year-old fired the pistol or not. Hell, there’s got to be some kind of physics test available to determine if a suicide victim could fall on top of their own gun (i.e. — would the momentum of the shot carry them too far away). However, I don’t recall seeing in print police saying exactly WHERE beneath the body the gun was. It could’ve been under her legs, meaning maybe she ate the gun and fell backwards, dropping the gun at her feet and collapsing on top of it.

@Taguchi: I’ve never really been a big fan of CSI. Honestly, I could just have easily typed “Somerset’d” at the end there instead of “Manhunter’d.”
Hey, my mind works like that: always trying to figure things out.

Off-topic: Former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara is dead at the age of 93. I totally recommend that documentary about him from a few years ago. Can’t remember the name though.
So…does he go on the list? I mean, he was one of the more well known political officials because he was the architect of Vietnam and such.
July 6th, 2009 at 1:01 PM
Fog of War. Also recommend his mea culpa “In Retrospect”, in which he essentially says Vietnam was really stupid.
