We’re sitting at a picnic table chowing down prior to the fireworks when we picked up our phone and scanned twitter to find this stunner: “WSMV confirms that McNair was murdered in downtown Nashville. Was shot and killed by his wife, and then the wife killed herself.” Relayed that to a few people at the table, and their jaws hit the floor with a thud. Fortunately, the wife part was incorrect.

Then we checked email and read this shocking report: “According to the same NashvillePost.com sources, a white woman in her early 20s, around 5-foot-4, approached McNair at the restaurant and accused him of slipping her a ‘roofie’ a year ago. The woman then told McNair, according to sources, that her boyfriend was going to kill him.” That one hasn’t been shot down by police yet.

The former Pro Bowler QB and the cute 20-year-old he was cheating on his wife with have been dead for 48 hours and there still hasn’t been an arrest. Perhaps we’re in the minority, but we don’t think she killed him. Over what? Him not getting a divorce? Him breaking up with her? Where’d she get the gun? (A reader scanned the state’s gun permit database and she didn’t own one; McNair did.) Her co-workers, neighbors and family all paint her as a saint whose only flaw appeared to be that she was dating a married man.

Our money’s on her jilted ex-boyfriend being somehow connected or the mysterious boyfriend of the girl who allegedly made the ‘roofie’ claim.
