The 2nd Best Pitcher in Baseball is on the Block*
Baseball, Video July 7th. 2009, 6:39pm
CBS Sports started the “Will Roy Halladay get traded?” business over the weekend, and once the smoke began to clear from the murder of Steve McNair, blog-lover Ken Rosenthal sent the story viral this morning.
Who’s getting Halladay? SI’s Jon Heyman has the Phillies, Yankees and Angels as the early leaders, with the Blue Jays coveting a strong shortstop. (Was the last good SS north of the border Tony Fernandez?) Hmmm. Some of the biggest spenders in baseball. Fancy that. The sad-sack Mets could mortgage the farm and it wouldn’t matter – until the bats get healthy, Johan and Halladay would be nice on paper, and that’s it. Surprised to not see the Red Sox in the discussion – that farm system is loaded, and Beckett-Halladay postseason tandem would be difficult for anyone to overcome.
A portend of things to come over the next month …
* Halladay’s having a terrific season, but it’s Lincecum, people. Come on. There’s no debate here. That’s why all that early-season Greinke stuff was rubbish.

shouldve gone with the Hornsby version
July 7th, 2009 at 6:44 PM
cubs should trade d. lee or even zambrano’s crazy ass for halladay
July 7th, 2009 at 6:49 PM
1. Halladay
2. Santana
3. Lincecum
July 7th, 2009 at 6:50 PM
Huge – how do you come to that conclusion?
July 7th, 2009 at 6:51 PM
Because when you’re reloading you want old (d. lee), crazy (Zambrano), and expensive (both of them) players in return?
July 7th, 2009 at 6:54 PM
im a cubs fan you cant expect anything i say about baseball to make sense
July 7th, 2009 at 6:55 PM
Now, the man’s name is obviously hugh.
July 7th, 2009 at 6:55 PM
As a Cardinals fan this has been imparted to me since birth.
July 7th, 2009 at 6:56 PM
I’m a Dodgers fan, I hate the Giants.
July 7th, 2009 at 6:57 PM
Haren>Lincecum
July 7th, 2009 at 6:58 PM
i knew there was something about you that i didnt like.
July 7th, 2009 at 6:59 PM
Until this year I would have said Halladay for the same reason Joba’s more valuable as a starter than a reliever: dude chews up innings. Both he and Timmy are excellent, but Timmy has been slightly more excellent with fewer innings. This year Timmy’s got innings AND superpowers though, gotta think he’s number one, at least before accounting for league differences.
July 7th, 2009 at 6:59 PM
Halladay being out there certainly makes things interesting. Seems like everyone was down on the pitching market, but now, you’re going to have a lot of teams interested in Halladay and talking Halladay only to find out there is only a slim shot to get him. That probably makes teams more eager to go after Jason Marquis, Jarrod Washburn or Brad Penny.

Q: What did the mother say to michael jackson at the beach?
A: get out of my son
July 7th, 2009 at 7:14 PM
Dear lord, how good would Halladay’s numbers be if he played in the NL West instead of the AL Beast?
July 7th, 2009 at 7:15 PM
Q: Why did Michael Jackson die?
A: Because he had heart disease but couldn’t beat it.
July 7th, 2009 at 7:15 PM
“What did Michael Jackson say after his funeral? Nothing. He’s dead.”
Lets move on, folks. Kevin Duckworth would want it this way.
July 7th, 2009 at 7:28 PM

plus, Halladay and Lincecum aren’t faking an imaginary illness to cover up for their ineffectiveness.

I’m from T.O and keep hearing Roy’s name mentioned, but I didn’t realize he was the 2nd best pitcher in the league? That’s awesome. How are the Jays doing anyways? I think I know about 2 baseball fans in my life..most people here pretty much watch hockey or basketball, or soccer.
2. I hate baseball, but I just had to comment the moment I saw Tupac. Best rapper, dead or alive. Yes I started it.
July 7th, 2009 at 7:52 PM
..and god damn that’s an ugly jersey he’s wearing.

dead.
July 7th, 2009 at 8:13 PM
Who’s the best rapper alive? Rakim? I’m talking mass appeal and popularity yet still enough substance to last for a long, long time (..Tupac).
By the way, if you guys like I Get Around, you’ll want to read this:
http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=20613
It’s Shock G talking about how the song was made. Pac wrote Shock’s verse! I kinda figured cuz of the “tryin to make a dollar out of 15 cents” part but still interesting.
July 7th, 2009 at 8:27 PM
I’ll take Lincecum over Santana without blinking… and frankly, right now I’d take Matt Cain as well.
July 7th, 2009 at 8:33 PM
Matt Cain’s FIP is totally out of whack with where he’s been, due for a regression.
/Rob Neyer lemming’d
/Dude’s always right
July 7th, 2009 at 8:38 PM
Lincecum is built like Roy Oswalt and will have a similar decline once he reaches about 1,000-1,100 IP. He’s too small to hold up over the long haul. I like Cain long term better than Tim.
And, I’ve heard the White Sox are pushing real hard to acquire Halladay. Remember, they did pretty much trade for Jake Peavy about 5-6 weeks ago.
They would have to give up Tyler Flowers (power hitting catching prospect) or Gordon Beckham. Plus, Aaron Poreda and a host of young arms.
July 7th, 2009 at 8:44 PM
Dear God,
I know I don’t ask for much, but can you please make it anyone but the Phillies or Mets?
Sincerely,
The Braves
July 7th, 2009 at 8:49 PM
sc: you hear about the second offer the tribune co got for the dubs? i just wish this would be ended so the cubs didnt have their hands tied to make moves
July 7th, 2009 at 8:56 PM
I heard.
From what I got off the radio today, it seems like Ricketts’ offer is still in the lead. The 2nd offer is for more money total, but Ricketts offer supplies more cash up front.
Considering that the bankruptcy courts are going to have a say in this due to Tribune filing for protection earlier this year, I would imagine that Ricketts offer will stand up. It would help them pay down their debt faster.
Sam Zell still sucks, though.
July 7th, 2009 at 8:59 PM
Fantasy question…
Do I start Bedard against the Orioles tonight in his first start off the DL? Game is in Seattle.
And, is Aaron Hill a keeper for 2010? Josh Hamilton? I get 2, and I’m stuck with A-Roid for the next 3 seasons probably.

I really enjoy this site and what you have going here, but you might want to lay off on the daily CSI speculation until all the facts are out. It is popular to say that we are in a 24 hour news cycle age. False. We are now in a 60 minute news cycle age. Read, digest, ruminate, read again, digest ruminate…

Brett Favre. Kidding. There is a difference between covering and speculating wildly on each post. He may be right and then considered a savant, but there is so much info not out that he may just end up looking silly.
Also, speaking to that, I find it humorous that Deadspin is taking some moral high ground on this story. Fucking black pots and kettles and such with their “Deleted Scenes” nonsense and other wild speculation they deal with on a weekly basis. it’s biggest sin is that it’s not a NY show … hence it wasn’t as lapped up by the NY media
Pam over Elaine. that could easily be a post this week.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:22 PM
First, they didn’t want her to be used as a political football. Second, they wanted to get her to that ship with the project people (it’s been a couple years since I’ve watched) so that she could help them figure out how to restore fertility to everyone. Third, she’s an immigrant, so she wouldn’t be too kindly looked upon by the Brits.
Damn good movie, definitely recommended to anyone that hasn’t seen it.

July 7th, 2009 at 10:26 PM
TBL, I love Office, nearly as much as you, and I wasn’t a big Seinfeld guy, but you’re way off here. There’s nobody out there quoting Office right now (except me and you), and people are still picking scenes out of nowhere to prove their point 10 years later on Seinfeld.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:26 PM

That has something to do with it TBL, but Bar is still hotter. And yes, I realize I’m in the minority here.
/Plaxico shooting himself should’ve won that thing
July 7th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
Oh crap, the Wire. What an amazing show. I’m gonna get shit for this, but it was better than the Sopranos but didn’t bring in the viewers.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
MASH?
July 7th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
Seinfeld is often called the greatest sitcom ever, with the likes of I Love Lucy, cosby show, and Honeymooners. Office…not so much.
/piling on
July 7th, 2009 at 10:41 PM
Bar and thousands of others without tacky gigantic tatoos on their forearms. Also additional thousands that don’t look like they need a haz-mat suit to approach without catching something communicable.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:41 PM
GSG: from what i saw of the wire(just the first season) when i had hbo and watched it over the winter ondemand i would have to agree with you.that show hooked me faster than the sopranos
July 7th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
Looks like DJ Whoo Kid will be using a new partner on his mix-tapes.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
@dirt: Yes, Dear. Two and a half men. According to Jim.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
Epic Fail… It was a comedy. It was a drama. It was incredibly written. Still not as good as the movie, but a great, great TV show…
July 7th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
MASH?
That’s longrunning. I was thinking more Dharma and Greg.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:44 PM
I swear to you, The Wire really might be the best show ever. Not even exaggerating. I’m biased I guess, but still, it’s unreal.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:44 PM
Grace Under Fire
July 7th, 2009 at 10:44 PM
alda’s constant whining got on my nerves. and yes i know it was a fail.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:45 PM
sweet fucking jesus, 182 episodes of according to jim. That’s awful.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
Fucking fantastic. Bedard was kind enough to give us 2 runs in the first, only for Guthrie’s stupid ass to give the Mariners 3 back in the first.
Guthrie’s a headcase. Guy can’t get out of the first inning to save his life.
Headcase, by the way, is a funny show. Just tossing it out there.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
Mrejr go find some dvds of it. Greatest drama I’ve even seen, and I’m one of those tv losers.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
Even Greg Daniels would pick Seinfeld over The Office.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
I think we have a winner right there… wait… or is that a loser?
That is a show I can say I have NEVER watched.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:48 PM
Grace Under Fire
That show was so gross. Just putrid. The worst part is how many shitty episodes I’ve seen.
In Mrejr’s defense, he was humoring me, which I appreciate. He also got somebody else to answer my stupid question.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:48 PM
Very well written and well excecuted show with very solid acting and character development. But as far as actual entertainment value, the Shield was non-stop craziness for seven seasons. And the ending was the best series ending of all shows in the mix for “best ever.”
July 7th, 2009 at 10:48 PM
1 simpsons
2 seinfeld
3 grace under fire
July 7th, 2009 at 10:51 PM
every one is forgetting cheers…that show was the seinfeld of the 80’s
July 7th, 2009 at 10:52 PM
I actually thought Frasier was a better written show than Seinfeld. (and the Emmy people agreed)
/ducking and running
July 7th, 2009 at 10:53 PM
So what I’m looking for now is a sitcom that was as bad as According to Jim that also ran longer than 182 episodes.
It’s out there, and I know the answer. Although I’ll concede that According to Jim is the winner.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:53 PM
every one is trying to forget the 80’s
July 7th, 2009 at 10:54 PM
Jim Belushi made a career off of “Hey, remember my brothers talent?!”
July 7th, 2009 at 10:59 PM
Animal House is way overrated
July 7th, 2009 at 11:00 PM
Holy fuck, Grace Under Fire was terrible. I remember that show now…after looking it up.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:00 PM
I actually liked The Principal, even if it was a formulaic piece of 80’s crap. That scary black guy, who played the scary black high school kid, he was scary. Plus, Rae Dawn Chong.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:01 PM
WHY COULDN’T IT HAVE BEEN YOU AND NOT YOUR BROTHER!
/Walk the line’d
July 7th, 2009 at 11:01 PM
Shut your mouth.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:01 PM
the nanny….awful awful awful show.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:01 PM
Duder, me and you are seeing eye to eye far too often now. Maybe b/c it’s dated..but I am just not impressed with it – perhaps too many movies have stolen from it, who knows.
My favorite comedy is and will always be Airplane! My favorite show: Soap. That show was ahead of its time.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:06 PM
My answer was Family Matters aka Urkel, which ran for 240 episodes.
I would also have accepted Full House.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:09 PM
Soap is fucking classic, and Airplane is my favorite comedy ever.
/adds nothing to convo
July 7th, 2009 at 11:10 PM
Airplane is great, think the first Naked Gun is better. Heard about Soap never seen it.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:10 PM
I don’t even think Big Lots sells that DVD.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:12 PM
Can you imagine that going over today on the networks? Racist humor, gay humor, asian/jews/italians – all in the line of fire (not a WWII joke) Wow things have changed.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:12 PM
But the correct answer is Roseanne. I’d rather contract pig AIDS from a needle at a flea market than ever watch another episode of that white trash show.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:14 PM
bottom scroll on espn says the medical examiner would be “very surprised” if mcnair’s death isn’t ruled murder-suicide
July 7th, 2009 at 11:14 PM
So if every time your girlfriend leaves your place you can’t help but think how horrible of a person she is, it’s probably time to tell her to back the eff off right.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:14 PM
/sorry to get off topic
July 7th, 2009 at 11:15 PM
you think roseanne is worse than married with children? both complete filth but at least roseanne had some realism.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:16 PM
Yeah, it’s probably time, fetch.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:16 PM
No way. Now how. No chance. Great show. Gonna take shit for it and don’t care. Excellent, excellent show.
@fetch – She’ll probably try and and beat you to punch.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:16 PM
Disagree – that show had some great writers as well, guys that have surfaced on some other major shows/projects/late shows. True story talked about in the writing community – On the first day after the show got signed on by ABC, writers were brought in from Lampoon and other IVY league comedy groups. She mentioned her idea about opening up a “loose meat” store. Four of the writers had never even heard “loose meat.” And were fired on the spot.
I thought it was a very clever show and the acting was incredible. Seriously.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:17 PM
roseanne is terrible
/never seen an episode
July 7th, 2009 at 11:22 PM
Never got into Rosanne, of course by my time it was reruns.
“Always Sunny” is the only “comedy” show I watch religiously nowadays, although I guess Entourage would count, too.
Anybody see the first episode of “Hung”? Could be weird / hilarious.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:22 PM
Surprised you say that since it’s where Sarah Chalke got her big break.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:24 PM
I thought the first episode of Hung was pretty funny
July 7th, 2009 at 11:24 PM
Loose meat was the only thing decent on that show. That shit is good, especially from the places that fry it in beer.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:27 PM
That was pretty great.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:28 PM
Now we just have to see if Hung can keep it up over and entire season.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:34 PM
I’m with you, I cannot stand that show. But the movie is one of my favorites.
And the best non animated show of all time is Doctor Who. Bitches.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:37 PM
Late to the party, but RE: Halladay, let the Phillies overpay for him. They’ll still have the second best rotation in the division, and will have to give up enough that it will weaken their farm system, and quicken the ascent of Toronto. Making the MLB playoffs, and by extension, winning the World Series depends on the savviness of the front office, not how much money they spend. That’s how the rich get poorer and the poor get richer.

The Office had 2 good seasons. then shit the bed.
How I Met Your Mother is a terrific show. Lots of quotable stuff on there.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:40 PM
Does King of the Hill count for the long running sitcom that sucked even though it’s animated? If so, this contest is over.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:41 PM
I like How I Met Your Mother but I am finding it increasingly hard because I hate the main character.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:44 PM
I like How I Met Your Mother but I am finding it increasingly hard because I hate the main character
I agree. It’s tough to watch a show for 4 years where every episode is based on him finding his true love. But the other characters are terrific. Especially Barney. He is Legen… wait for it…
July 7th, 2009 at 11:46 PM
I don’t know if its just the way they made him or if its the actor. He is just dominated by the rest of the cast
July 7th, 2009 at 11:46 PM
Does King of the Hill count for the long running sitcom that sucked even though it’s animated?
Anybody else from Texas that enjoys this show? I know I do, although nobody I met in Pittsburgh did

I dont know what the Phils are going to give. Donald and Corrasco I guess. Or Drabek maybe?

I’m tellin’ you guys…
Odds Makers: Chances Halladay ends up in a White Sox uni?
80%
July 7th, 2009 at 11:58 PM
Not really, aside from the fact that I own the sixteen disc Monty Python box set I really don’t watch any other BBC shows. All the Doctor Who spinoffs suck and I couldn’t name any of their sitcoms. I just assume most of their shows are reality shows which end up here six months later with a different name.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:59 PM
Fetch, I have a feeling it’s going to take 3 out of Drabek, Michael Taylor, Donald, Carasco, and Savory. We’ve never had so many good prospects at one time. EVER. I don’t know if I wanna give up Drabek or Taylor. Call me crazy.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:59 PM
It would have to be for Beckham and Poreda at least. As a Twins fan I would endorse that deal.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:02 AM
@fetch- Poreda, Flowers and a few other arms. Won’t have to include Beckham if they include Flowers.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:04 AM
All very good examples of why this is a bad deal for the buying team. If you need to pick up a bat before the deadline, you can do so, at a somewhat reasonable price. If you need a starting pitcher, it’s probably not worth it.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:08 AM
SC: Ricciardi said he wanted a premium SS preferably.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:09 AM
Braves need an arm lefty. In the bullpen. And tell Mike Gonzalez I’m sick of looking at his delivery. It’s making me nauseated.
@mole – I replied to your comment..
July 8th, 2009 at 12:09 AM
Lefty, last year we had half the roster home grown. We never had a winning team like that since the late 70s. The Phillies are always reluctant to trade prospects. Been like that since forever. In my opinion, we won’t get Halladay.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:10 AM
Oh sweet, I can look forward to there being no improvement season to season for four more years. Awesome news, awesome.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:11 AM
Oh, and if you didn’t see this mole, you’ll want to read me rip my own team.
Rumor has it, Tallon is going to get fired next Monday. Talked to a buddy of mine that works for the Hawks.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:11 AM
hahaha. At least a disease isn’t buying the Pirates!
(seriously though I don’t see how a change in ownership will change anything for the Cubs, not that I’m saying you were suggesting that, but some people were acting like Cuban would save that team)
July 8th, 2009 at 12:12 AM
What a head of hair!
July 8th, 2009 at 12:13 AM
On the bright side: Back to back golds baby.
I would say I want the Twins to make a trade (though not for Halladay) but Bill Smith making a trade scares the shit out of me
July 8th, 2009 at 12:13 AM
I know! I had to use that picture when I found it.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:16 AM
For as much as you bash Gardenhire fetch, he’s done a pretty good job with that team. Not easy to win with that payroll and they compete every, single year.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:19 AM
Gonzo – The Phillies are just the name I picked out of the group listed. I don’t envision much movement on that front at all, actually. Like I said, it’s not worth it.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:19 AM
True, SC. Theyd be doing better with Gomez in CF every game. And with a manager who could manage a bullpen
July 8th, 2009 at 5:45 AM
I’d love to see Boston get in a 3-way trade for Doc. We (obviously) do not have a premium SS. But we do have some damn good pitching prospects to get a premium SS to get Halladay.
Too bad it will never happen because JP refuses to deal within the division. You gotta think what Boston has to offer would be a good match for what Toronto’s looking for. Guess we’ll never know.
July 8th, 2009 at 7:47 AM
He might be the 2nd best overall, but he’s the best in Canada. Yankees need to make this happen.
July 8th, 2009 at 8:01 AM
seriously?
seinfeld was a team effort…think the pats over the rams in the super bowl. or the pistons over the lakers.
i bet seinfeld reruns still get better ratings than the office.
