The College Football Over/Unders Are Out
College Football, Gambling July 21st. 2009, 5:30pm
How you know the college football season is creeping up: Vegas has released its win total over-unders for the upcoming season. Colin Cowherd offered up his picks yesterday: He likes the over on Notre Dame (8.5), BYU (9), Rutgers (8), Stanford (5.5), and Penn State (9.5), and the under on winless-in-2008 Washington (4), rebuilding Texas Tech (8), and Pat White-less West Virginia (8.5). A few thoughts after the jump:
* Florida’s tops at 11, and seems like a safe bet to, at worst, lose just one game.
* Texas is at 10.5, and Oklahoma 9.5, which leads us to believe if UT and Oklahoma played in week one, the Longhorns would be the favorite.
* Ohio State at 9.5 seems high for a team that lost its two starting WRs, top RB, and had four defensive starters drafted in April; the Buckeyes also play USC, and travel to Penn State. Toss in an annual clunker against an inferior league opponent and that’s three losses.
* Strange: Oregon and Oregon State, both thought to have top 15 potential, are both at 7.5. The Ducks open with Boise State, but then don’t leave Oregon until an Oct. 10 game at UCLA. The Beavers should go 3-0 against non-conference opponents; like the over there.

Go Cuse!

Note to self. Do not ever trust tallguy.

6 for UK
Obviously they haven’t seen our schedule this year.
July 21st, 2009 at 5:40 PM
Oregon will get eight wins easily. They only have five away games and they get USC and Cal at home.
Attractive overs: Stanford (5.5), Central Michigan (7)
Attractive unders: Tennessee (7), Rutgers (8)

100% agree. I gave my reasons on CGB.
July 21st, 2009 at 5:43 PM
I hate the Illini, but I like their number, they should be able to get to 8 without a problem with their schedule
July 21st, 2009 at 5:51 PM
I saw that after I posted, good to see a non-biased observer agree with me. You making the trip down to Durham this year?
July 21st, 2009 at 5:52 PM
Rutgers is playing Texas Southern, Army, Maryland, FIU and Howard out of conference. What a joke.
July 21st, 2009 at 5:57 PM
Rutgers is at 60-1 to win the BCS title. Worth $5?
I wonder what odds you could get on reaching the championship game?
July 21st, 2009 at 5:57 PM
Would love an example of this. Last year when their 3 losses all came to top 10 teams? 07 only two losses to BCS teams, including the nat champs. 06 only loss to national champs. 05 both losses to top 5 teams, including nat champs. they dont lose to inferior teams, this is why they are in BCS games every year.

Kansas is 8? I’m hammering that over all day.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:00 PM
Not this year. I am going to Atlanta for Alabama, @Maryland and home for UNC and Nebraska.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:00 PM
good one. they would put a 2 loss SEC team in the NC over an undefeated BE team.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:01 PM
An undefeated Rutgers team whose best win would be against Pittsburgh will not be in the title game. Save your 5 dollars and go buy a Subway footlong. More satisfying.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:03 PM
Agreed. Kansas’ schedule is nice for a 10 win season.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:04 PM
That’s a dicey bet. I like Reesing but they will lose to Oklahoma Nebraska @ Texas and @Colorado and @TT won’t be gimmes.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:04 PM
I think 4 wins is just about right for UW last year, if Locker stays healthy, considering that with him we’d have won at least 2 games last year, and this year we have an easy game on the schedule (Idaho).
July 21st, 2009 at 6:05 PM
*this year
July 21st, 2009 at 6:07 PM
Oklahoma 9.5 is easy money. At the worst, they’ll be 10-2.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:10 PM
Does the over under count bowl games? If it does I would put money on VT Have won 10 games 5 straight years and this is the best team they have had in two years.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:11 PM
Since Marcus anyways, when was that?

Okie State, Baylor, Texas. And the bowl game.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:17 PM
WSU under 3 is free money.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:21 PM
texas is a coin toss. baylor and ok st will never beat ou.

Sadly, I agree. I think win 8 might be the bowl game. Brutal schedule for a Big 12 North team. KU/CU games in Boulder are always bizarre. Kansas will have to cement that it can hang with equal or just less than equal teams in conference road games. And you can’t just mark Mizzou a gimme. Never.
Looking forward to KU/NU. To top it off, that night will feature a hell of a boxing match for four rounds.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:27 PM
Okie State’s 2-2 over the last four years against them. And Robert Griffin is a monster.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:44 PM
griffin might be the best athlete in cf. baylor is very optimistic.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:44 PM
Since Ohio State’s last 6 losses (over 3 years) have been to BCS opponents, I don’t think you can find a clunker amongst them. UF, Illinois, LSU, USC, Penn State, and Texas are those teams.
Ohio State is likely 10-2 or 11-1 after the regular season. The 9.5 will likely draw some money on both sides, but they will have a great shot to beat it.
Penn State loses most of its offense, including all of its receivers, which should concern fans of the Nits. Of course, the non-conference schedule is embarrassing so 9.5 doesn’t seem so absurd.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:45 PM
And by 2-2 I mean 0-4. Ick. That was bad.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:47 PM
Baylor, you mean the team that won 2 games against Div I teams last year?
Wally, those receivers were largely overrated anyway, Deon Butler was the only one worth a damn. The OLine is more concerning, but they only play 3 loseable games.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:48 PM
I don’t know where you pulled this stat from but it is not true. OU has won the last 6.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedlam_Series
Leslie Miles had a decent record against OU (3-3, I think), but Gundy can’t beat them.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:49 PM
damn. should have hit refresh.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:50 PM
@coop. baylor doesn’t get many chances to be optomistic. they have to take full advantage when they get the chance.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:51 PM
I could certainly see OSU losing three times, but a lot of that is based on last year’s TP. If Pryor improves as much as we’re hearing (and hoping), their offense – Tressel’s playcalling notwithstanding, is going to be impossible to defend.
The stuff Pryor did as a true frosh (didn’t come down in spring) is heavily underrated. Seems like some people saw him run out of bounds three times and throw a few ducks – and now they’re writing him off. Bad move. And you people know I’m not a homer, dont’ try to dismiss my thoughts. Pryor is seriously a one-man wrecking crew. He made so many plays last year..and did so behind terrible pass protection. This year, the pass protection gets much better.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:53 PM
why are people just assuming ok st will be great this year? its oklahoma state. when is the last time they were in a BCS game?
July 21st, 2009 at 6:54 PM
Agreed on the schedule. There are a few Big 10 teams that COULD beat them, but losing to Akron, Syracuse, Temple, or Eastern Illinois is not happening.
Also agreed on their O-line, which was very good.
July 21st, 2009 at 6:56 PM
did you forget who syrcuses qb is
July 21st, 2009 at 6:58 PM
Can’t say I have any clue if Griffin is good or not, never seen him play. Its tough for me to keep track of all those B12 record setting super QB’s, I dont watch much CFL.
/zing

God. Great point. I sure did. Syracuse is a likely BCS team this year.
/fixed for Duke homerism’d

A very valid question. I think they make the transition to beating teams they are supposed to beat this year every time. It will be a fun team to watch and they might put a scare into Tex or Ok, but, nahh… that’s the third place team in the South.

I never bet futures because you are wagering for the same reward over a long time period as opposed to for just one game, so the odds of you winning go waaaaayyyyy down because it’s just like hanging out at a casino too long after you win big.
Are we having a “bragging rights” contest here TBL? You ought to have gambling posts here this autumn so we can place our “bets,” but they must be by secret bet just like at the book not posted until the betting window is closed.
July 22nd, 2009 at 8:00 AM
annual clunker against an inferior league opponent?
ok, that happened against illinois in 2007, but when has that happened since? when did that happen before? 2005? i think you’re thinking of USC.
and penn state is gonna blow this year. 9 wins max cuz of their easy sked.
