2009 NFL Preview: Phildelphia Eagles
2009 NFL Previews July 28th. 2009, 2:30pm
The Eagles 2008 season would’ve been considered ridiculous almost anywhere else in the NFL, but by their standards, a bizarre rollercoaster of improbable highs and depressing lows is pretty much what’s expected year in and year out under the Donovan McNabb-Andy Reid regime.
In their last four seasons together, they’ve missed the playoffs, won a wildcard game, missed the playoffs, and fallen one game short of a Super Bowl.
Last year was particularly absurd, from an embarrassing Week 11 tie to the Bengals, a game that spoiled us with McNabb’s remarkably clueless press conference, to rock bottom the following week in Baltimore with the benching of said clueless QB, to a dominating do-or-die win against the hated Cowboys in the final week of the season that sent them streaking to the NFC Championship.
If anyone says they have any idea what’s going to happen with the Eagles this year, they’re either an enthusiastic 11-year old, or someone who defiantly wears a Hugh Douglas jersey to work on Fridays. Pay no attention.
Embraced Additions: Jason Peters (Pro Bowl left tackle via Buffalo), Stacy Andrews (Right tackle, scored a huge free-agent deal despite tearing his ACL in Week 17), Ellis Hobbs (CB, reunited with Asante Samuel!), LeSean McCoy (RB, 2nd round pick). McCoy is a nice upgrade as Westbrook’s back-up, partly because he’s explosive, but mostly because he hasn’t torn his ACL 19 times. If he manages to get injured on one of his first few touches as a pro, the Eagles should just forget about the running back position altogether.
Tough Departures: Pretty monstrous hit with all-time Eagle Brian Dawkins going to Denver. Their fearless, emotional leader had clearly slowed a step or two, but his presence will be missed. I have no idea who takes over that leadership role this year, but it won’t be Donovan. With Tra Thomas now in Jacksonville, it’ll be tough finding another left tackle who will miss just one game (165 of 166) over the next 10 years. Jon Runyan is also gone, but he just had microfracture surgery on his knee and his disturbing shoulder hair is unforgivable. Their other losses widely classified as “key” — CB Lito Sheppard, TE LJ Smith, WR Greg Lewis and RB Correll Buckhalter — are mostly forgettable. Sheppard has only made it through a full season twice in seven years, Smith is serviceable at best, Lewis is terrible, and Buckhalter’s ankles and knee caps always fall off. Also not with the team in 2009 are Dan Leone and his keyboard. Cruel, I know.
Missing In Action: Jeremy Maclin must be pissed the Raiders snubbed him despite what all those mock drafts said, because that fleet of foot prick hasn’t signed yet. Which brings me to…
McNabb: It’s relatively simple with the Eagles, more simpler than most. This team lives and dies, rather hard, with the play of Donovan McNabb. Each season it’s been standard practice to surround him with a bizarre set of receivers, sometimes castoffs (James Thrash, anyone?), sometimes chicks (remember Todd Pinkston?), sometimes myths (Reggie Brown’s gonna bust out!) and sometimes legends (Freddie? Freddie!). But this year there’s real potential at the position, something McNabb can get excited about. DeSean Jackson, who finished just shy of 1,000 yards last year and who made some big grabs in the playoffs, is a serious deep threat who’s only getting better. His speed paired with Maclin’s could be a nightmare, but as mentioned, their top pick still needs to sign a contract. Kevin Curtis is steady and reliable when healthy, Jason Avant is hanging onto T.O.’s number in hopes of a breakout season, and Hank Baskett is still really good at standing on the sideline and being horny.
The Defense: Sheldon Brown is finally laughing, which is important considering he bitched his way through the offseason. Taking over at defensive coordinator is Sean McDermott, who replaces the widely respected, blitzing madman Jim Johnson, who’s been battling cancer. Eagles fans can talk about years of tutelage under Johnson until their green tits turn purple to convince themselves this will be a seamless transition, but it’s never that easy. Ray Rhodes was a Bill Walsh disciple, what did that get them?
Outlook: With Eli Manning about to experience his first full season without having Plastic Man to throw to, the NFC East is Philly’s.
The Real Reason: How could I argue with team president Joe Banner? The guy looks like he should be rambling on and on about the latest dazzling products from Adobe, but if he says the Eagles have the best roster in the league, they must have the best roster in the league.

Prediction: 11-5. They’ve been to back-to-back NFC Championships before. It’ll happen again, with the same result.
And finally, a brief moment with Vai Sikahema to take you into the comments …

SUPER BOWL!
But seriously, they’ll win the division and be a contender. If I say anymore I’d be an idiot.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:39 PM
+1 Hernia on the Real Reason
I like Philly again to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Picked them last year too(pats back)
July 28th, 2009 at 2:39 PM
ok, so the giants and the eagles will be winning the NFC East this season according to yesterday and today’s posts.
will every preview declare that every team will win their respective division?
July 28th, 2009 at 2:39 PM
as major dutch (arnold in predator) would say: “thats one ugly muthafucka!”
July 28th, 2009 at 2:43 PM
I will love it if the Giants win the division instead.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:43 PM
This team lives and dies, rather hard, with the play of Donovan McNabb.
Brian Westbrook is more valuable than Donovan.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:44 PM
Isn’t McNabb due for another injury?
July 28th, 2009 at 2:45 PM
The Eagles sure as shit do. He’s baaaaaaaack.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:45 PM
I can’t wait till tomorrow so I can hear the reasons why Washington will win the NFC East. Though, I’m not looking forward to Thursday’s preview of the Cowboys and how they’ll win the East.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:48 PM
I don’t know, it’s not like they can just hand it off to Westbrook 35 times when Donnie’s crapping in his helmet.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:48 PM
This is the most important portion of the post. No Jim Johnson equals major, major regression on defense. I will be surprised if the Eagles make the playoffs.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:50 PM
@SC: When I saw that yesterday, I definitely thought it meant as a player. He’s still only 32.
TO’s arms are bigger than his legs.

Fuckin gator arms
July 28th, 2009 at 2:52 PM
that’s one of my favorite eaglefan photos!
July 28th, 2009 at 2:53 PM
If this happens will they steal the coveted off season super bowl champions moniker from the Redskins?
July 28th, 2009 at 2:53 PM
Lito Sheppard is the Jets 2009-2010 MVP
/srsly
July 28th, 2009 at 2:53 PM
how did you know about my hugh douglas jersey?
July 28th, 2009 at 2:53 PM
filthadelphia beagles suck cock.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:54 PM
@ Hernia, Didn’t the Eagles lose Donovan for like half a season and didn’t Westbrook tear shit up during that time frame? I don’t have the time to look this up, but I think it was 08. The point is, the Eagles can win with a QB who can complete a pass every now and again just to keep the D honest. Thus my argument of Westbrook being more valuable to the Eagles becomes valid.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:56 PM
The team president looks like a pedophile.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:58 PM
8-8 this year, misses the playoffs. Mark it down.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:59 PM
@pkiguy: McNabb started every game last year, he was just all over the place.
In ‘06 he missed six games — that’s when Jeff Garcia jumped in and played great.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:01 PM
I think more of a voyeur/stalker with that creepy toupee- lacks the child loving ’stache.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:05 PM
The Eagles DEFENSE cost them a shot at the Super Bowl. Therefore, McDermott needs the defense to play much better than last year.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:10 PM
I’m only 6′5″, 185… and my legs might be bigger than that. Holy crap, that dude is a twig.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:26 PM
This is correct.
The rest of the players on the Eagles will miss McNabb when he’s gone. Who else is going to provide cover for their occasional inadequate performance, because everyone in the fan base and the media seems obsessed with Five.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:30 PM
all the hype is on the Giants and Eagles in this division. The Redskins had the big offseason pickup.
odd, but guess who that leaves to sneak in and steal it?
July 28th, 2009 at 3:31 PM
TBL/Hernia – is there any kind of schedule which teams will be posted which days for this? There’s a couple I’d like to clear my schedule for.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:33 PM
no.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:34 PM
mcnabb sucks.
that is all.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:35 PM
You only want to be here for the one day you have to defend da Steelers.
But I second this.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:35 PM
Legit ? – Anyone not think the NFC East is the best division in football?
July 28th, 2009 at 3:35 PM
TheBigDeal should do the Skins preview
July 28th, 2009 at 3:37 PM
HA, so unappreciative. Perfect.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:37 PM
I agree Dallas is going to win it.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:38 PM
afc north > nfc east
/incredibly homerified
July 28th, 2009 at 3:38 PM
No, I definitely want to read about the teams in the division, plus there are a few others I’m interested in reading.
Plus, what’s there to defend, we’ve got 2 rings in 4 years and 20 of 22 starters back.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:40 PM
Me.
NFC South>East.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:41 PM
including a rapist QB.
/don’t believe he raped her
//still gonna rub it in
July 28th, 2009 at 3:43 PM
What am I unappreciative of?
July 28th, 2009 at 3:43 PM
That shit’s true. 20 of 22 is scary if you like another team in that division… if only you could also acquire vick you’d be set.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:44 PM
one a weekday until the season begins. we’ll start in the NFC and work through to the AFC.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:45 PM
AFC EAST> rest of nfl, ncaa, arena league, cfl, and ufl combined
July 28th, 2009 at 3:47 PM
Keep on disrespecting the Giants, all of you. Please!
July 28th, 2009 at 3:48 PM
no shit…i know what it’s like to be a michigan fan now.
that said…the OL is even worse than it was last year. something has to give, but even then, their defense is more than crazy good enough to carry them to the playoffs.
ravens on the other hand? enjoy mediocrity.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:48 PM
Well the defense helped them get to that NFC championship game. Absolutely murdered the Giants.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:49 PM
Don’t make me bust out the Brady Quinn gay wedding photos.
/he’s probably gay
//NTTAWWT
July 28th, 2009 at 3:51 PM
The real reason the Giants lost that Div. playoff game last year was not the performance of the O, but the atrociousness of AP and the D, whose injuries finally caught up with them.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:52 PM
he could carry a dildo around in his non-throwing hand as long as he doesn’t suck, for all i care.
then again, ive said if they break out the brown pants at all this year, im changing allegiances.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:56 PM
I’ve stuck with the Bears through our flaming gay orange jerseys. Once a year… that’s all I keep telling myself.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:58 PM
This tells me you probably didn’t watch very closely.
Especially, if you are judging the offensive performance of the Giants against the Eagle without Plaxico, who gave the Eagles nightmares.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:58 PM
Well the defense helped them get to that NFC championship game. Absolutely murdered the Giants.
Agreed. But I am just talking about the NFC Title game. If I were to lay blame, it would be the defense. Gave up 24 points in the first half. Then gave up the lead with 3 minutes left.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:01 PM
McNabb had his chances at the end of that game, and like clockwork, gagged in a big moment. Great QB, but just doesn’t get it done in big spots.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:03 PM
Also, Eli reverted to form.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:05 PM
T.O. and I have never agreed on anything except McNabb is a bitch.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:06 PM
True, that was one ugly start. And painful. The Cardinals in the Super Bowl?
July 28th, 2009 at 4:07 PM
@johndewar: You’re probably right about that actually, I was watching upside down and drinking like Steve-O.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:34 PM
McNabb had his chances at the end of that game, and like clockwork, gagged in a big moment. Great QB, but just doesn’t get it done in big spots.
Sure, McNabb had his chance and didnt get it done. But my point being, the defense SUCKED. I’m looking at the entire game, not just the last minute drive.
July 28th, 2009 at 6:04 PM
Just in- D-coordinator Jim Johnson passed away from cancer. I’m putting a self-imposed moratorium on Philly knocking for the next couple of days, at least.
