Mike Vick Has Been Conditionally Reinstated, Now the Bidding Begins
1-liner, Mike Vick, NFL July 28th. 2009, 2:00pmMike Vick: Commish Roger Goodell has conditionally reinstated former QB Mike Vick, and the guy who took the Falcons to an NFC title game in 2005 will be eligible to play in week six. Goodell will let Vick play in the final two preseason games, which is probably a great strategy since nobody watches (or plays) in the final two preseason games.. The first team rumored to be interested is the Redskins, but that came from a radio station and the Redskins are denying it. We’ll predict that Vick will end up on a team that Tony Dungy – his new advisor – steers him to. This probably rules out the Patriots, right? Why not: Steelers, Bears, Colts, all of whom are coached by former Dungy assistants.

Don Banks had a nice piece last week for all those people who like to say “Vicks better than half the QB’s in the league.”
“In other words, what’s all the fuss? This is a guy who, at least from a statistical standpoint, was in the same neighborhood as Alex Smith, Matt Leinart, Rex Grossman and Charlie Frye when he last performed as a starting quarterback. And we know things haven’t gone so swimmingly for that particular foursome since 2006 either.”

Why didnt Dungy ever mentor Marvin Harrison? He seems like he’s a much bigger danger to society than Vick is now. Get on it, Tony!

it seems like most teams would shy away from him from the PR standpoint rather than his quality as a player. maybe a smaller market team, one that is normally ignored on the national stage in comparison to the east coast teams/big market teams.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:15 PM
While fumbling the ball away, getting sacked, throwing picks, and “leading” his team to a sub 500 record the last two years he played. Was I excited to watch, hell yes, did his style lead to victories, rarely.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:16 PM
Most teams have their starters play into the 2nd half of the 3rd game. That’s the best one to watch.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:16 PM
Except the Steelers, bears, and Colts all have ‘franchise’ quarterbacks. Doubt it. Also isn’t the 3rd game of preseason the most important or atleast the ones the starters play the most.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:18 PM
I would personally LOVE it if the Skins signed him. I hate them more than anything, and it would be so awesome to hear the locals go nuts if they got him. Campbell is bad, and so after week six when they are sick of him, Vick could come in and be just as bad. It would be perfect.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:18 PM
irish: my thoughts 10000%
“Now starting for YOUR Orlando whatevers, Michael Vick!!!”
I think it’s a lot easier for all 32 teams to take the heat from the “you’re a Vick hater” crowd for not giving him another chance than for the one stupid team that does and gets shit on by the dog lovers and 100% of the media for the rest of the year and has their season implode from the distraction.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:19 PM
I think Vick would be a great fit for the Steelers.
He always lacked a good defense previously. He can also move the offense, so it must be an upgrade for them, right?
July 28th, 2009 at 2:20 PM
Cardinals should sign Vick.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:20 PM
if vick still has his legs he would be perfect for teams that already have a “franchise” qb. they could install the wildcat offense(yes spence we know you hate it) and it would add another dimension to their offense. and give their starting qb a rest

Vick to Minnesota. Vick in the wildcat with A.D……fuckin sign me up
July 28th, 2009 at 2:24 PM
PETA!!!!really? This supposed PR hit is overblown. The NFL can survive steroid stories without a glitch. Can survive Ray Lewis being in the Super Bowl less than a year after being on trial for murder, but Michael Vick playing QB is going to be a problem because of PETA? Get The Fuck Outta Here!!!!!
July 28th, 2009 at 2:24 PM
He could actually be eligible to play earlier then week 6. Goodall can hypothetically clear him to play in week 1 “on good behavior” if he wants according to the exact language in whatever document was sent to Vick.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:24 PM
eh. nevermind. its hard to say who is more forgiving.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:25 PM
I’ll set the over/under at 0.5 for offers Vick receives from NFL teams for the following reason….
If you’re an NFL owner and your GM comes to you and says he wants to sign Vick, I imagine the conversation going like this:
“We want to sign Michael Vick. What do you think?”
“Well, what did he do last year?”
“He was in prison.”
“What about the year before?”
“He was in legal trouble and was suspended in definitely by the commish.”
“And the year before that?”
“Well, his team was sub .500 and he looked like he was starting to decline.”
“You’re fired.”
July 28th, 2009 at 2:26 PM
yeah the wine drinking hippies in their birkenstocks are all about forgiveness and shit. because it isnt his fault he did that it’s society’s. because he was so oppressed when he had that $100 million contract he had no where to channel his anger. again it was the white man that made him do it.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:27 PM
I could have sworn they were already interested in an over the hill turnover machine who’s name is better than his play…
July 28th, 2009 at 2:28 PM

How the hell’d you end up there?
July 28th, 2009 at 2:31 PM
ATL’s team the last two years Vick was there had so many issues outside of Vick not being a great passer. Roddy White was a rookie in Vick’s last year and he was easily (as a rook) better than any WR Vick ever had to throw to. Was Vick a great passer? Of course not. But had Bland not hired a freaking classic West Coast coach to come in he would not have been as bad as he was. The system Mora Jr. ran was probably the worst system for Vick.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:34 PM
Not to mention the offensive line was HORRIBLE when Vick was here.

I would think the NFL would LOVE for Vick to go to the UFL. He resumes his career, has a “probation” on another league’s nickel, and if he has anything left, a team could sign him in November if they really wanted to
from the press release for JP Loss-Man’s signing:
Losman has signed an undisclosed, one-year contract, prorated over the six games, and, following the UFL title game in November, he will be free to rejoin the NFL immediately.
That is EXACTLY how I would want it to go if I were the NFL and/or a team owner
July 28th, 2009 at 2:38 PM
I find it hilarious that after years of white people never believing racism was a factor in American life all of the sudden the biggest threat to America is reverse racism. The hilarity of this is awe inspiring.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:38 PM
Thanks to all who are saying Vick was average at best. 100% agree. Teams figured out if you just contain him in the pocket and slowly collapse it w/o letting him outside the tackles, he was average at best.
That’s all

July 28th, 2009 at 2:47 PM

July 28th, 2009 at 2:47 PM
Yup, because there would be no racism if people didn’t acknowledge it.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:51 PM
Vick’s record as a starting QB: 38-28-1
sub .500? Not really. And that was with bad coaching, bad D, and never having a stable organization. (which obviously got even less stable after he fucked up).
And he was a bad passer in NFL, but I still feel he was given the worst coaching staff in the world to develop that. Anyone recall him setting the NCAA record in passing efficiency by a freshman at VT?
July 28th, 2009 at 2:52 PM
spillover from the minaya post.
not saying that but is it always racism? always? i have a problem believing that.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:53 PM
@PLSK – Ok…. Hanie isn’t better than Vick. His first name is Caleb after all…
But Batch and Sorgi might be. They’ve taken more snaps in the last two seasons and (everyone is tired of it by now but…) they can find the film room.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:54 PM
so no knock on the atlanta coaches who, despite all evidence suggesting that vick was AWESOME when he could operate near the line of scrimmage, had him in 5, 7 and 9 step drops, totally negating the threat to run.
ive long said…vick wasn’t the problem, jim mora jr. was.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:56 PM
PETA doesnt have the balls to protest a NFL team especially when fans of said teams are emerging from their 6hrs of tailgating
July 28th, 2009 at 2:57 PM
Says the guy who flames Roethlisberger when people say “he just wins”, citing that wins are accomplished by a team (they are). Pick a side dude. You can’t say one guy’s shitty, and his record doesn’t matter because he’s on a good team, and then say another guy’s not shitty because his record is good. Doesn’t add up. And I’d like to know where you’re getting bad coaching, bad D, and unstable organization from. Methinks that’s you talking out of your ass.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:58 PM
I agree with everything you said, but passing efficiency is such a dumb stat.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:58 PM
The problem is every bit as much with the people who say “racism exists, but I don’t think it’s the case in this situation” IN EVERY SITUATION!!! It’s just a back door way of denying it’s existence.
July 28th, 2009 at 2:59 PM
Watched Sorgi to years ago when Indy played Tennesee at home, An Indy win insured a Browns playoff birth. I swore that i was witnessing the worst quarterback in the NFL history on that dreadful night. He was absolutely awful, I hate Jim Sorgi forever.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:00 PM

More games started, Vick or Cutler? Hasn’t Cutler started for 3.5 seasons? Give him time.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:04 PM
more playoff wins, vick or cutler?
Cutler’s 25 and a better QB. I don’t see Vick behind center in the NFL
July 28th, 2009 at 3:06 PM
how is it bullshit? that system wasn’t designed for him at all. the threat to run, his best attribute, was fucking gone. his downfield passing, which was solid, gone in lieu of gay little intermediate routes. the only good thing mora did was bringing in alex gibbs and his zone blocking schemes.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:07 PM
Jim Mora Jr. was head coach for 3 years. One of those they went 11-5. So they weren’t that terrible. The three years prior to that, Reeves took the blame for the team underperforming, and even Arthur Blank will tell you his biggest mistake ever was firing Reeves. Not buying the “he had to do it by himself” angle.
/2003 Falcons intern
July 28th, 2009 at 3:07 PM
Why would an offense that collapses the defense, relies on quick reads and timing routes, benefit the most mobile QB in NFL history??
Any football fan recognizes how stupid it was to put Vick into the offense Mora tried to run. Takes away strengths and exposes weaknesses- dumb.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:09 PM
oh, and cutler > vick even tho i love vick.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:10 PM
I was only responding to the comment based on him not winning games, which was false. But I appreciate how well written your exercise in logic was presented.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:10 PM
When he was with Reeves in a downfield passing system he was getting good (the year they went to the playoffs and beat GB). He needed more time, but Blank caved to fan pressure and sacked Reeves after the Falcons went 5-11 when Vick broke his leg. I’m not saying Vick would be an MVP had Reeves been the coach, but Mora was trying to put a sqaure peg in a round hole and it did not work. I’m not some huge Vick defender, but saying that he is not worthy of starting in the NFL when Shaun Hill, Kyle Orton, Tavaris Jackson/Sage Rosenfels, Jake Delhomme and Jamarcus Russell are starters is a bit much. I think the UFL would be good for him to play football without the pressure and to then prove to teams that he still has the legs.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:10 PM
spence, you’re in my top ten when it comes to fake internet friends but vick was horrible when it came to passing. sure he could throw the ball a country mile but he couldnt hit the broad side of a barn
July 28th, 2009 at 3:13 PM
which is why it was dumb to put him in a “west coast offense.”
but downfield when there’s 8 in the box? all you gotsta do is sling it lawya.
WE NEED SOME FOOTBALL OUTSIDER STATS, STAT!
/too busy at work to look it up
July 28th, 2009 at 3:17 PM
What did you do for the Falcons? Are you working for them now?
July 28th, 2009 at 3:18 PM
I know, how dare he try and make his QB, you know, throw the ball instead or running it all the time. Maybe Mora wasn’t a fan of broken legs on his QB, what a dumbass.
I’m not saying there isn’t some truth to this, but to just say “well in a different offense he would have been unstoppable” is just ridiculous. No offense on the planet works when you cant top 54% completion rates.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:19 PM
Peerless Price as the number 1 receiver. Nuff Said.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:20 PM
spence who was the falcon’s leading reciever when vick was around? alge crumpler. he is a te, not exactly a down the field speed demon and more intermeidate route type of guy. made the pro bowl in that system i believe. the downfield speed demons didnt make the probowl because when ever vick threw down field the balls were alway ten yards in front of them. vick could have thrived in that scheme if he didnt just read for a half a second and then took off or just threw the ball as far downfield as he could.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:23 PM
From here on out or career? Cutler has a good chance of making the playoffs if he stays in the NFC North because the only competition year in and out is the Packers. So, he’ll get there.
Vick currently has 2 and that isn’t likely to go any higher. So you’re asking Cutler to get 3. I’d say he gets that in the next 9 years.
Could be a push though I hope not.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:24 PM
No longer with the team, only for that season. During Training Camp and half of preseason, I worked with the Event Marketing department. During the second half of the preseason and throughout the regular season, I worked with the video department. I got to go to all 20 games, but man football is much less fun when it’s a job.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:26 PM
coop…are you REALLY trying to stick up for jim mora, jr? dude was a third-trimester abortion as a coach and you know it.
mrejr…first off, his WR’s were TERRIBLE when he was there. peerless price, michael jenkins, rookie roddy white…not good.
second, how can he be a bad intermediate passer yet his pro bowl target was a guy who caught passes in the intermediate? interesting.
/see what you’re saying
//still love vick
July 28th, 2009 at 3:27 PM
This is a bull shit line and you know it. Never did I say he would be unstoppable, never. I even said he wasn’t ever a great passer, yet you somehow stretch that into “unstoppable.”
Fail.

I guess no one here ever watched Vick make fool out of their team twice a year like I did, but I’m certainly hoping he doesn’t sign in the NFC South. He made the best d-line in football look like a bunch of amateurs.

The First Tee is a great program. It’s huge in Atlanta too. John A. White and Charlie Yates are both First Tee facilities, if I’m not mistaken. I loved that business, but there’s not a ton of money in it. Most of the guys I worked with had side jobs giving lessons, just to put extra cash in their pocket, and I coached a the golf team for a private school in Buckhead for a couple of years. Had tons of fun though. Playing golf four or five days per week doesn’t suck.

I never understood it either. Those two defenses were pretty much equal, edge to the Bucs in the secondary, but Tampa could handle the Vick experience, and Carolina couldn’t.
Also, the Vick experience was a f’ing awesome commercial.

July 28th, 2009 at 4:24 PM
As a Super Bowl MVP winning QB, Eli threw for a completion percentage of 56% with Plaxico Burruss. I don’t understand why the same people who poo poo away BA in baseball live by completion percentage in Football or FG% in basketball. They’re all equally overrated.
July 28th, 2009 at 4:35 PM
mrejr, this was during the time when Dan Morgan hadn’t been rendered into “Matt Damon in Team America” by concussions. Carolina’s linebacker corps was only slightly below the Bucs during Vick’s tenure.

check out the leader in fg% in basketball history and get back to me. A chucker isn’t automatically a bad thing unless your vision of basketball is still the fair haired boy shooting on the side of the barn growing up one day to run the picket fence play to perfection.
