The NCAA Could Give USC Football a Call Today
1-liner, College Football July 30th. 2009, 10:00amMore Potential Trouble for USC Football: “USC football Coach Pete Carroll employed a former NFL tactician last season to help with the team’s punting and kicking game, an arrangement that may have violated NCAA rules that prohibit consultants from coaching, The Times has learned.” It’s obviously not a major infraction – hell, it might be nothing – but if the NCAA spotlight is on you, wouldn’t you play it by the book?

what’s the difference with hiring a “consultant,” and college coaches using athletic funds to attend nfl training camps and pick the brains of nfl coaches?

I hope this isn’t your idea of the college football post you promised… or I want my money back

I hope this wasn’t the college football post mentioned in the roundup.

see TBL, TWO unsatisfied customers!!!
July 30th, 2009 at 10:09 AM
Not if you know they’re not going to do anything about it.
If they’re taking 7 years and counting to investigate the program over a $750,000 house, then Pete Carroll will definitely be retired or somewhere else when they get around to this ticky-tack shit.

USC is immune. We all know that Reggie Bush was paid while playing there, yet there has been no sanction at all.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:10 AM
Why would you play it by the book when it’s clear the NCAA has no interest in punishing you?
July 30th, 2009 at 10:13 AM
USC’s punishment will be that they will have to give up all those imaginary national championships the media has given them the last 4 years.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:13 AM
Word.
USC is damn-near untouchable due to Bush buying off key witnesses. The minute he did that this was never going to bring about any real punishment for USC.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:14 AM
The consultant in question was attending USC practices and giving advice to Carroll based on what he saw at the practices.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:17 AM
If a SEC or Big 12 school had done this, not only would they have been investigating, they would have already come down with a ruling of something like 3 years probation and a ton of forfeited games.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:18 AM
I just realized, I completely forgot about them finally getting to the Mayo stuff at USC. Has that been swept under the rug as well?

What he said!
I hope this wasn’t the college football post mentioned in the roundup.
Yeah, him too.

isnt every sec school already on probation?
July 30th, 2009 at 10:19 AM
No, the basketball program is taking the bullet for the entire program because it makes it look like the NCAA does not play favorites, it’s not very good, it doesn’t have an ungodly fan base, and the television network doesn’t make a fortune off of them.

July 30th, 2009 at 10:28 AM
you four unsatisfied customer just need to toss in one of these > or one of these posts that mention mississippi douchebags that won’t go away
July 30th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
ignore that last one. i was trying to crack wise with those greater than less than things, and the middle of my text got devoured, because I enclosed some words between two hashes.
I feel stupider than that last comment looks.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:32 AM
well, yea, if you’re a normal school.
if you’re a USC or Alabama, you ain’t got shiznit to worry about.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:33 AM
arkansas had 2 track national titles taken away over some minor bullshit recruiting violations. that investigation took just over a year. how long has the usc crap been going on and nothing has happened? nice double standards ncaa.

Headed to Pac-10 media day at the airport in a little while. I’m sure there will be questions about this one, so I’ll let you guys know if anything interesting comes up.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:36 AM
Dirt, I have one of those bi-daily… don’t feel bad
July 30th, 2009 at 10:40 AM
what…you new here? does this actually SURPRISE you?
and there’s the difference between the SEC, big ten and big XII…the pac-10 media day is at the airport because once pete carroll talks, it’s an empty room.
i can imagine pac-10 media day being like playing with tiger woods…he shoots and the crowd moves down the fairway not giving a shit about what the other guy does.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:44 AM
Fast Ricky at UCLA will get some pub, and maybe due to Sarkesian being a Carroll alumnus be will get some as well, but after Carroll the media doesn’t care about any one else. And frankly I don’t blame them.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:46 AM
i do.
because the pac-10 is a joke and nobody, from the fans to the AD’s give a shit about football outside of Troy and Eugene (and UCLA in selective years).
July 30th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
Chip Kelly should get some attention as well, but it’s no surprise they have Carroll speaking last.
July 30th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
If a SEC school had done this, they would be protected
/WWL and its $$$
July 30th, 2009 at 10:52 AM
i dont even know who chip kelly is
July 30th, 2009 at 10:53 AM
nevermind. forgot belloti was done
July 30th, 2009 at 10:53 AM
Hell yeah Does anyone know what kind of profit the Big 10 network pulled in last year?
July 30th, 2009 at 10:54 AM
Bullshit. They, including The Leader, cite all of Lane Kiffin’s violations (you never see a laundry list of USC’s violations on ESPN). And if Nick Saban did so much as rent a movie for Julio Jones, the NCAA would take more scholarships away from them in a heartbeat.
/and I hate Tennessee and Alabama
July 30th, 2009 at 11:05 AM
When you write “potential trouble for USC football” what you’re really saying is “fans of every other team in the country who has ever been punished by the NCAA for far far less than this shit, go ahead and get pissed off even more”.
I say let’s drop the bomb on USC and let them start from scratch.
/SMU’ed.

Stew Mandel brought up a point last week about this non USC investigation basically saying Bush won’t talk, they paid off the one major witness and since Bush graduated there is nothing the NCAA can do.
Of course if the NCAA was actually paying attention when this happened in the 1st place all those points would be moot.
