Red Sox Trade for Victor Martinez
Baseball July 31st. 2009, 2:56pm
Looks like the Red Sox will go 1-for-3 in their pursuit of a big-name at the trading deadline. In a move much less significant than last year’s Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay swap, Boston gave up Nick Hagadone, Justin Masterson and a couple guys to be named later to Cleveland for catcher/1B Victor Martinez. We first saw it here and then here. Guess the price for Adrian Gonzalez was too high.

July 31st, 2009 at 3:05 PM
What happens to Varitek and his 1973 haircut?
July 31st, 2009 at 3:06 PM
just what they need. another 1b-dh type who cant catch.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:06 PM
How about just a press conference where Hendry says once Milton Bradley turns it around that would be “just like adding a big bat to the cubs lineup”?
July 31st, 2009 at 3:09 PM
we dont have time to wait for bradley to figure out the right amount PEDs it takes for him to be effective. we need someone who’s cycle is still in effect.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:09 PM
osu
July 31st, 2009 at 3:12 PM
Done deal.
And, the Cubs won’t add anyone mrejr. They added the left handed pitching they needed yesterday. The bats are in the lineup. We still get Geo back in a few weeks.
They can’t add anyone. They need the underperforming expensive guys to start hitting. Mostly, Bradley. Everyone else is doing just fine. We’re in first place, dude.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:12 PM
laroche might go to the braves as well.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:14 PM
Justin Masterson,
Michael Bowden,

Not bad for Clevland.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:14 PM

mangini…please…all you have to do is go 7-9 and we’ll forget all about this fucking trash ass organization that “operates” during the summer.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:15 PM

I heard Hagadone, Masterson and Bryan Price.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:16 PM

July 31st, 2009 at 3:16 PM
Justin Masterson,

July 31st, 2009 at 3:18 PM
hagadone just had tommy john surgery. i like it.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:20 PM
Too bad he can’t, you know…catch.
I’m kidding (sort of). His bat is exactly what the Red Sox need. That, and Matsuzaka to not be a little puss.
/your one and only compliment from a Yanks fan, Red Sox fans
July 31st, 2009 at 3:20 PM
@fetch – Heard it on the radio, but it’s apparently wrong. Hagadone, Mast, and Price are it.
Not great for Cleveland. Price is pushing the limit for age in A ball. Masterson is soild. I just don’t know how much you can expect in return for a 31yr old catcher. I would have tried to get either Bowden or Tazawa as well.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:21 PM
yankees make a splash with jerry hairston Jr.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:21 PM
LaRoche to Braves is confirmed and done.

The shit taste in my mouth would be totally reversed
July 31st, 2009 at 3:25 PM
If we gave up more than a dozen balls and a fucking fungo for that piece of shit LaRoche, I’m gonna commit spencer-on-shapiro levels of violence on Frank Wren.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:29 PM
FUCK YOU SHAPIRO AND FUCK YOU DOLANS. the only player i wanted this team to hold onto. im fuckin done
July 31st, 2009 at 3:29 PM
What was the point of trading LaRoche for Kotchman?
July 31st, 2009 at 3:30 PM
Casey Kotchman lefty…
And what the fuck?
GOO!
July 31st, 2009 at 3:31 PM
Arroyo admits to using roids in 2003 while playing for the Red Sox. The plot thickens.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:31 PM
We are left with nothing. No pitching staff to build around, nothin in the middle of the order, and noth………….This ownership makes Al Davis not look so laughable.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:32 PM
hey you whiney cocksuckers go 100 years without seeing your team make it to the world series and then whine.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:33 PM
no idea. maybe gonzo trade is still an option, and kotchman is a better fit for SD?
wouldn’t that be a trade day haul….
/snaps back to reality.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:34 PM
wrong fanbase to pick on.
we’ve seen more pain in the last two decades than the cubs have in that century.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:35 PM
he admitted andro, which was not banned at the time. splitting hairs, but still.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:35 PM
What if the Red Sox unloaded Ortiz…..
/dumps gas on hay stack
July 31st, 2009 at 3:35 PM
Cabbage: look up the definition of “steroids”. Now look up “andro”.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:36 PM

Yes…hell yes…do this please….
July 31st, 2009 at 3:37 PM

July 31st, 2009 at 3:39 PM
how were those bears and bulls titles?
we lost the browns, had some of the worst basketball teams and got screwed out of one WS and got stomach punched in xtras in the other.
the drive, the fumble…etc.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:39 PM
Androstenedione (also known as 4-androstenedione) is a 19-carbon steroid hormone produced in the adrenal glands and the gonads as an intermediate step in the biochemical pathway that produces the androgen testosterone and the estrogens estrone and estradiol.

July 31st, 2009 at 3:41 PM
Explain how you got screwed in the 95 World Series please. That was a pretty good series, and Game 6 was a 1-0 final. Screwed?
July 31st, 2009 at 3:42 PM
i would give the bulls 6 titles up for a one world series title. the last time the bears won a superbowl i was like 3…so i barely remember it.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:42 PM
Also, Scott Rolen may be headed to Cincinnati if he waves his no trade clause.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:43 PM
At least Chicago can point to the 85 Bears and the Jordan Dynasty Bulls.
All Cleveland can point to is the Rock’n'Roll Hall of Fame…and the Drew Carey Show.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:43 PM
we got this jeremy sowers fellow who apparently is the
July 31st, 2009 at 3:43 PM
Eek. I was owned.
Anyway the point is that it was fine to take back then, which was what Arroyo said, until that extra ingredient in it caused positive steroid tests.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:44 PM
apparently youve never heard of adam miller
His career is done duder, He’s not comin back from his finger injury
July 31st, 2009 at 3:45 PM
i would give the bulls 6 titles up for a one world series title. the last time the bears won a superbowl i was like 3…so i barely remember it.
The last time Cleveland won anything my dad was 5, so I don’t really remember that too well

i know stabbin.
fredo you left out halle berry.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:46 PM
the braves got a strike zone approximately 3x as wide as the tribe pitchers because tom glavine is a little pussy, complaining bitch asshole who has no business being discussed as anything even remotely hall of fame worthy.
you mean that chin to shoe top and 6 foot wide strike zone the braves pitchers got didn’t seem shady to you? shit…
mrejr…i would give a testicle FOR ONE FUCKING TITLE.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:48 PM
@Spencer – Who is considered “the team” in Cleveland? Is it the Indians?
Chicago probably goes:
- Bears
- Cubs
- Blackhawks
- Bulls
- Sox
July 31st, 2009 at 3:50 PM
the last time the cubs won anything my great grandpa was just entering the 6th grade so suck it.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:50 PM
Again, Andro was ON SALE AT WALGREENS. I WAS ON ANDRO. Not the same thing as steroids.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:50 PM
cleveland = browns town
July 31st, 2009 at 3:51 PM
If the Cubs can’t win with that fuckin payroll playin in the NL than you deserve to lose for another 100 plus years.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:52 PM
Come on dude, you’re better than that. Each team had the same number of walks in the series, and Cleveland batters struck out a whopping 3 more times than the Braves hitters. Here’s the link.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:52 PM
fredo you left out halle berry.
I try not to, but sometimes, I do leave out Halle Berry. What can I say?
/would still halle berry.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:52 PM

July 31st, 2009 at 3:55 PM
once again thank you maurice clarett. without you i would still be clinging to the crunch titles.
how dare you think we would click on that lefty. and shame on you spencer for bringing it up.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:55 PM
just kidding mom…i love ya…but seriously if someone tole me to punch her as hard as i could for a cubs title i would probably do it after i explained to her why i had to
July 31st, 2009 at 3:57 PM
Jerry Hairston Jr? Should’ve gone for a couple He-Man figures instead.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:57 PM
Once the Cubs finally hire a competent GM the championships will come. They outspend the entire NL by a pretty hefty margin sides the Mets and should be able to continue to do so.
July 31st, 2009 at 3:58 PM
mrejr…you’re a sick fuck, man. you may be wrong, but you win…you’re like this argument’s ben roethlisberger.
ZING!
July 31st, 2009 at 3:59 PM
Red Sox might be moving Mike Lowell….
July 31st, 2009 at 3:59 PM

Looks like that’s it. No more deal unless this Lowell for Fields thing pans out.
July 31st, 2009 at 4:04 PM
Fuck the stats. Watch game 6 and it will explain why Glavine threw a 1 hitter. Every pitch catchable was called a strike.
July 31st, 2009 at 4:05 PM
Sorry, that paste was not supposed to include stats.
I’ll redeem it with this link.

Arrgghh I hate ESPN. ESPN has the U.S. Senior Open, the Deuce has NASCAR, and in the DC market ESPN news shares a channel with MASN, so I get a simulcast of some local radio show where they talk about the Ravens and Deadskins. Bah.
July 31st, 2009 at 4:26 PM
Please God make this happen!!
July 31st, 2009 at 4:28 PM
White Sox got Peavy.

Kevin Kaduk says Olney says Stark says the Angels say there’s no Halladay deal, which is what Tim Brown says. I think I’m bleeding from the ears.
July 31st, 2009 at 4:30 PM
Moderated? The Big League Stew live blog has a telephone game-like string saying there’s no Halladay deal.
July 31st, 2009 at 4:31 PM
WHAT ABOUT HEATH BELL!!!
July 31st, 2009 at 4:32 PM
it’s crazy, lots of guys heard rolen went nowhere unless halladay was going somewhere…we’ll see and probably know in about half an hour.
July 31st, 2009 at 4:33 PM
Reds just traded their top prospect and Edwin Encarnacion for 1.5 years of Scott fucking Rolen at 11 million per
Banner day for Ohio
July 31st, 2009 at 4:36 PM
From everything I see there’s no Heath Bell deal.
July 31st, 2009 at 4:38 PM
same here, but it makes so little sense for them to keep him. I don’t get the peavy deal at all.
July 31st, 2009 at 4:39 PM
I bet Peavy gets lit up in the AL. He’s got a 4.60 ERA outside of Petco.
July 31st, 2009 at 4:44 PM
I bet Peavy gets lit up in the AL. He’s got a 4.60 ERA outside of Petco.
I agree. He’s going from Petco of all places to the banbox that is the cell. Could be trouble for Jake.
July 31st, 2009 at 6:52 PM
Best thing about the Nick Johnson trade is that Bonifacio will not be an everyday player. Addition by Subtraction
