ESPN’s Memo on Social Networking: Smells Like They’re Cooking Up Some Changes
ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings August 4th. 2009, 8:27pmThe kind folks at ESPN PR just passed along – without us even asking! – ESPN’s ‘additional guidelines for social networking.’ The rules are printed after the jump. Guess our homework tonight is to find out why this initiative was kick-started now? Could it have been the Mark Schlereth-Ocho Cinco death match on twitter last night? Or is ESPN close to hatching its plan to “publish twitter and facebook entries … on ESPN.com?” Unrelated: Due to this “overtime,” we’re starting a bit late tomorrow, 8:30 instead of 8.
ESPN’S ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR SOCIAL NETWORKING
ESPN regards social networks such as message boards, conversation pages and other forms of social networking such as Facebook and Twitter as important new forms of content. As such, we expect to hold all talent who participate in social networking to the same standards we hold for interaction with our audiences across TV, radio and our digital platforms. This applies to all ESPN Talent, anchors, play by play, hosts, analysts, commentators, reporters and writers who participate in any form of personal social networking that contain sports related content.
ESPN Digital Media is currently building and testing modules designed to publish Twitter and Facebook entries simultaneously on ESPN.com, SportsCenter.com, Page 2, ESPN Profile pages and other similar pages across our web site and mobile platforms. The plan is to fully deploy these modules this fall.
Specific Guidelines
· Personal websites and blogs that contain sports content are not permitted
· Prior to engaging in any form of social networking dealing with sports, you must receive permission from the supervisor as appointed by your department head
· ESPN.COM may choose to post sports related social media content
· If ESPN.com opts not to post sports related social media content created by ESPN talent, you are not permitted to report, speculate, discuss or give any opinions on sports related topics or personalities on your personal platforms
· The first and only priority is to serve ESPN sanctioned efforts, including sports news, information and content
* Assume at all times you are representing ESPN
* If you wouldn’t say it on the air or write it in your column, don’t tweet it
* Exercise discretion, thoughtfulness and respect for your colleagues, business associates and our fans
· Avoid discussing internal policies or detailing how a story or feature was reported, written, edited or produced and discussing stories or features in progress, those that haven’t been posted or produced, interviews you’ve conducted, or any future coverage plans.
· Steer clear of engaging in dialogue that defends your work against those who challenge it and do not engage in media criticism or disparage colleagues or competitors
· Be mindful that all posted content is subject to review in accordance with ESPN’s employee policies and editorial guidelines
· Confidential or proprietary company information or similar information of third parties who have shared such information with ESPN, should not be shared
Any violation of these guidelines could result in a range of consequences, including but not limited to suspension or dismissal.

Does the first bullet point mean they can’t RT stuff? And, as for the 2nd, doesn’t that prevent them from being the “first” to break a story? Yahoo and FOX win again.
For people who bitch about blogs “not being journalism” it would appear that whoever issued this needs to be reminded of what the term “4th Estate” means.
Seriously, these guys are embarrassing themselves daily now. This, is ABSURD.
August 4th, 2009 at 8:38 PM
That explains why they discouraged Simmons and why he rebelled by doing the sportsguy.blogspot.com site.
August 4th, 2009 at 8:38 PM
jesus, first 30 minutes in the office are going to suck balls.
surprised they didn’t do this before. I don’t know of one company my friends work at that actually allow you to go on social networking sites in the office, and if you’re a public entity like ESPN, it’s more of an image issue than security issue.
one thing i support ESPN in doing, now only is sports illustrated would do that. i hate their columnists updating us about their tw33ts.
August 4th, 2009 at 8:47 PM
I worked for a Tribune company in the past and we were encouraged to use Facebook and/or LinkedIn. Wasn’t there when Twi++er came out.
Same thing with Google.

- When reading Tweets, you must read them in your best version of The Kurkjian.

This is what happens when lawyers and bad businessmen, AND NOT JOURNALISTS, start running news room and setting policy. They should have one policy: Get the news, get it on record, get it right and get it out. ESPN execs should have a “team building workshop” and watch The Insider and then Good Night & Good Luck.
August 4th, 2009 at 9:06 PM
It’s like ESPN forgot they built a cult of personality on individual style.
August 4th, 2009 at 9:11 PM
BINGO. This is why newspapers are in a world of shit right now. They’re run by out-of-touch business types. Trust me. I know.

I actually don’t have too much of a problem with this. Here’s why: this seems to follow their policies for all other mediums. The reasoning behind those policies is certainly open to question, but at least there’s a uniform standard.
SC – The reason the company you worked for encouraged the use of Facebook and LinkedIn (and now twitter) is due to the fact that those networks and sites are either competitors, part of a product suite, or, at the very least, in a tangentially related space. You have to know the sandbox in which you play.

Badger – How’s No. Virginia?
August 4th, 2009 at 9:33 PM
It would be better if Gordon Gekko ran ESPN. At least it would be entertaining. His Twitter policy:
You stop sending me information, and you start getting me some.
August 4th, 2009 at 9:33 PM
NDub said exactly what I was thinking when I read that.
August 4th, 2009 at 9:38 PM
I foresee some type of physical competition in that workshop, and the execs getting their asses pummeled* by the pissed-off ex-jock staff.
*in the metaphorical, non-sodomy way
August 4th, 2009 at 9:49 PM
@NDub
its going all right man…new place to explore and all that good stuff. traffic here is a mess compared to what i’m used to. Lots of fun though, Jackson’s is a great place if ur into the whole ‘cougar’ phenomena…yes please. It hasn’t been that humid out, which is nice…
August 4th, 2009 at 9:50 PM
So are people allowed to make up fake twitter accounts? I don’t follow twitter but if somebody had a fake Berman one, I might re-consider.
August 4th, 2009 at 9:53 PM
Badger – Where you at in Northern VA? I’m a relative newcomer to the DC metro area (live in Arlington), but so far, it’s been pretty solid.
August 4th, 2009 at 9:55 PM
I find this very interesting. 8 of the 104 “positive” tests in 2003 were not from injecting illegal steroids, but from taking a very legal over the counter supplement.
August 4th, 2009 at 9:56 PM

The first blog I remember reading fanatically was the fake Drew Bledsoe blog, tonyhomo.com
As for twitter, nobody follows my twitter, and i follow nobody’s twitter. I let TBL do the work on that.
August 4th, 2009 at 9:57 PM
Reston…dude, arlington is tits. Went to mister days last weekend. lots of hot women. lots.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:00 PM
I honestly don’t understand the fuss over this…the policy is fairly straightforward and basically just sounds like an extension of language that is probably already in their employee handbook to cover a new area of concern.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
Yeah Arlington doesn’t suck. I think it was TBL that posted the link to the Arlington version of Lazy Sunday, and it’s 100% true. Cool spot though. I dig it. Mister Days is where we watched the All Star Game.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:03 PM

The 5 worst wrestling feuds of all time, or the five best.
How about an expose’ on Thundarr, the Barbarian. That show made no fucking sense.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:10 PM
you could compare and contrast Mark Madsen and a dung beetle.
How Jheri curls influenced sports.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:12 PM
that would be money for TSH during a weekend when he is running the roost here at tbl.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
MMA fighters you think you could beat up.
Do a list of SAT analogies with jokey answers like this one:
Pesticide : Ecosystems ::Eddy Curry’s Diet : (blank)
A) Healthy
B) His Heart Murmur
C) Anuka Sanders
D) the funny part. That’s where you need a joke.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Umm…yeah, he wont’ take my calls.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:18 PM
sad news out of pittsburgh…
August 4th, 2009 at 10:19 PM
I found answer C to be sufficiently funny.
mrejr – You could always flame the Bears front office for the continued employment of Lovie Smith as well as the fact that there are no legitimate NFL WRs on the roster.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:21 PM
i kinda did that already lefty
August 4th, 2009 at 10:25 PM
so that’s a no on Mark Madsen and the dung beetle?
August 4th, 2009 at 10:27 PM
good call dirt.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Yeah, I felt that was more about Lovie than the front office though. They’ve got a ton to answer for. Seriously, who can catch the ball on that team? They let Berrian and Mushin get away, and Olsen is the best pass catcher. They need to be held accountable.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:32 PM
I honestly don’t understand the fuss over this…the policy is fairly straightforward and basically just sounds like an extension of language that is probably already in their employee handbook to cover a new area of concern.
completely agree (of course, I’m an old guy who’s been working for 20 years and has run companies). For all of you who can’t access the internet at work to check this site (step 1), get back to me when you ask your boss if you can start tw++ting things that go on at your workplace, or divulge things that might disparage your employer or divulge “proprietary information” regarding said employer.
If an employee that I managed did something like that, they would be terminated on the spot, police escorted out, and the things in their desk would be courier’d to them later that day.
/things sounded so great when I was 24 also
//reality’s a bitch
August 4th, 2009 at 10:40 PM
Just imagine, right now, Mark Madsen, with all of his possessions rolled into a ball, headed for LA. He’s walking backward, pushing all of his shit with his back feet only occasionally pausing to see where he’s going.
I think I’m on to something. Forget that SAT garbage.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:41 PM
jpq you forgot /get off my cloud
August 4th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
berrian got overpaid by the vikes…moush is roughly 98 years old. if they get matt jones or marvin harrison it will be a good year. they did fuck up by not signing tory holt though.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
I third jpq’s opinion, but they way he said it was way better because it dripped with experience.

taguchi: are you and dirt having a contest to change your gravatar every time I log in? I haven’t been on much today, but isn’t that like the 3rd one in a day or so?
btw: I like to oooooze experience
August 4th, 2009 at 10:49 PM
I think I’m switching to Tiny Arnold.
That is the greatest picture I’ve ever seen. Sorry if it’s redundant for any of you yahoos. I only saw it tonight.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:51 PM
i tried a new gravatar but this gravatar is so awesome that i havent found a suitable replacement
August 4th, 2009 at 10:51 PM
Ehhh…I suppose it makes sense.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:52 PM
This was always my favorite arnold picture.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:53 PM
dirt: there’s a “Joe DiMaggioesque” pic of Arnold on Google, but I don’t want to link it and I SURE don’t want you to use it.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:54 PM
Eh, most of the ESPN tweeters are boring anyway, except for Schefter, Bucher and Marc Stein.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:55 PM
I can’t find an image of such small size that say’s “that’s so taguchi.” Future updates as events warrant.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:56 PM
I would feel naked w/o my Blackhawks logo. But, there has been consideration to go Bears once the season starts.
Or this one.
August 4th, 2009 at 10:56 PM
Also, dirt, that pic totally sums up Mark Madsen.
August 4th, 2009 at 11:00 PM

me? I’m a raging heterosexual. The Joe D one was a TBL post. I just googled Arnold and there it was. Here, look at this, then if you don’t believe me(NSFW)
August 4th, 2009 at 11:04 PM
@NDub
@Badger – Sorry the late response. Did you move alone or got family/friends there?
I’m looking for a new job and come to the realization I probably need to relocate, possibly out of state, so I’m just wondering how the transition’s been for ya.

There could easily have been a small penis hidden in that shrubbery. Nobody shaved their melvin in 1980 though.
August 4th, 2009 at 11:11 PM
An underrated downside to time travel is the utter unacceptability of a vag pre 1930 or so, what with the hygiene and grooming of the time. A similar problem can occur when traveling in most of Eastern Europe.
August 4th, 2009 at 11:13 PM

you think that thing in her crotch could have been the Unabomber? An early hideout, before his “fortress of shackitude” was finished?

How did we digress from ESPN policy to gravatars to bush only rivaled by African tribeswomen?
August 4th, 2009 at 11:19 PM
for the record, hippies make me physically ill. When i see a white person with dreadlocks I am absolutely repulsed to no end. Seriously, wash your fucking hair. And put on some deodorant.
August 4th, 2009 at 11:22 PM
SC – That’s racist.

thx mrejr, and right back atcha. save that pc to your hard drive. that way, when you want to really scare yourself, you can click on it, and when you see that nasty forest, it’s like geting scared straight. It’s like having The Exorcist on demand, but it only takes 2 seconds.

August 4th, 2009 at 11:36 PM
So, does this mean Shrutebag will have to shut down his site?
Hey, hey! DO NOT diss my man Thundarr. He was the man back in the day.
August 4th, 2009 at 11:41 PM
Like I and others have said earlier, this isn’t a shift in policy. It’s an extension of policy. If Schrutebag had a site before, he’ll probably continue to have one.
August 4th, 2009 at 11:47 PM
How in the hell do you come up with this stuff?
August 4th, 2009 at 11:50 PM
That picture will haunt my dreams. I have no specific clue as to why it disturbs me, it’s just weird.

Solid research by TBL Godfather as well … great comments here as well!

JPQ is the baddest ass MoFo on this site so far too.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:04 AM
@Paolo: just read your comment you linked to. This gets into so many thorny first amendment issues for public personas of employees and how employers can regulate you in public even when off the clock. And I tend to agree that now that I’ve read the memo, any thing sports related is viewed by ESPN as reporting and representing the company, and must first be approved as would any column/story (which to a large degree makes sense to me). As for Simmons, Hill, et al of the columnists, I don’t know how this would apply to them since they’re more opinion/reaction to stories and don’t really break any news.
August 5th, 2009 at 2:15 AM
doubling up, but this is what I found most interesting from the memo:
If ESPN.com opts not to post sports related social media content created by ESPN talent, you are not permitted to report, speculate, discuss or give any opinions on sports related topics or personalities on your personal platforms
this would seem to severely limit everyone from espn on twitter, regardless of if they report/react to the news.
August 5th, 2009 at 4:20 AM
It would be stupid and unconscionable to allow reporters to scoop their own companies on Tweeter and Facebook. This policy makes more sense than I’d like to admit.
August 5th, 2009 at 1:57 PM
Ultimately the courts will decide this matter in every state, and then in federal courts, and finally possibly the Supreme Court. In a way as a society in general we are all drifting towards being more independent contractors than employees any more. Again, this is new legal ground and it’s very early in the game.
