Who Are the Four Most Powerful People in Oklahoma?
1-liner, College Football, NBA, Politics August 5th. 2009, 4:00pmOklahoma: Had a random discussion yesterday about who the most powerful person in Oklahoma was. We went with billionaire T. Boone Pickens, the 117th richest person in America according to Forbes (2007). But because Oklahoma State (formerly Oklahoma A&M) doesn’t hold the same cache as OU our internet friend went with Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops, the 5th highest-paid coach in the country. Stoops seems to be on track (five years from now?) to topple Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer as the winningest coach in OU history. He’s had some bowl game issues (only 4-5, one National title), but he’s still beloved in the Sooner State. After the Pickens-Stoops debate is done, Nos. 3 and 4 are probably Kevin Durant and Sam Presti of the Thunder. If Blake Griffin had been drafted by OKC, we might have put him No. 3.

It’s Larry Nichols, CEO of Devon, now. In the past it was EK Gaylord of OU’s Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium fame and former owner of the biggest newspaper in the state.

@TBL – what do you mean by most powerful?
Able to pull strings and get something done for him through connections, definitely Pickens.
Holds most sway over the people by what he says, I’d go with Stoops.

spencer: if you’re still around. Our man Jaime Diaz had an interesting article this week about how he’s finally starting to rethink the “today’s players are better” theory. You should read it.
