Mike Vick, Rick Pitino … Some Week, Huh?
College Basketball, MMA, NFL, Politics, Television, Video, Video Games August 14th. 2009, 5:00pm
A big thanks to the Courier-Journal for unearthing Rick Pitino’s admission to police back in June. Made for a lively week. And a larger thank you is in order to Donovan McNabb, whose call to Andy Reid started the Eagles down the road to the signing of Mike Vick. (Last two thoughts on Vick for the day: If you have Eagles tickets and don’t want ‘em because you hate Vick, call us, we’d be interested; go and read this.)
Our hopes for the weekend: We shoot under 85, Gina doesn’t get that pretty face rearranged (see here for the Carano vs. Cyborg results), Mark Sanchez has a successful debut, and we remember to watch the Mad Men season opener. Supposedly, it’s a great show.
Pick up Madden 2010 this weekend (somebody start a TBL league and save two spots!), play the Powerball tonight, and enjoy Tiger. This weekend’s posting schedule will have no rhyme or reason (unless, you fill our inbox with goodies), but we suggest you bounce to the beach anyway because there are only four more weekends left in the summer.
And we close with that doofus, Glenn Beck.

Don Draper is a little too much of a caricature for me. I do like everyone else on the show though.
August 14th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
madden is incredible. played it for a couple hours, love it. few glitches, but nothing a download can’t fix.
on a side note, love that there’s no speed burst button, but it’s much easier to run out of the backfield and use the other controls like juke, stiff arm, etc.
August 14th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
You’re just going to jump into season three without watching the first two seasons? I wouldn’t advise it.
August 14th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Anybody know if they show preseason games on Channel Surfing? Sitting in a hotel room in Chicago and hoping to see the Rosenchoppa against four backup Colts DB’s tonight.
August 14th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
noooooo!!! it’s too soon!!! Saints haven’t even played their first game yet. sigh… I guess I just have to face facts.
Preseason football sucks.
where’s my madden.
August 14th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Anybody interested in the TBL league? I’m not a frequent poster on here, but we’re starting a league with about 6 or so people on the 360, waiting on a few more to get the game and trying to do a live draft sometime this weekend or early next week with as many teams as we can. My AIM screenname is the same as my TBL name, and my e-mail is just my name @aim.com so anybody interested, let me know.
August 14th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Pretty solid write up. It’s not hard to make PFT look like the bafoons they are. The local clowns on the radio here in Portland bring Florio on all the time and slurp him up and down eventhough he never brings any substance to what he’s saying. Just a bunch of lawya talk.
August 14th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
most of the people who comment on pft are idiots as well. almost espn.com comment level idiocy.
August 14th, 2009 at 6:32 pm
Met Jon Hamm last Saturday. Couldn’t be a nicer guy. It just goes to prove the guys that get famous later in life (mid to late 30s) always seem a little more appreciative of how they got there.
August 14th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
Also this channel on PGA.com that is just watching the Tiger grouping is hilarious. Outright rooting for him. “Get in there!” Is Hawk Harrelson broadcasting this?
August 14th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Of course Hamm’s the shit, he’s a Cardinal fan.
August 14th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
yup he is a big steaming pile of the shit
August 14th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Jets start soon.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
they really need to make football a year round sport.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Please tell me that Gumble isn’t broadcasting this game on NFL Network tonight…
I might go see the earlier showing of The Goods if he is.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
kellen clemens looking like poop…cant wait until sanchez comes in and stinks up the joint. jets are gonna be turrible this year.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
I hope you mean District 9. The Goods is..how do I say this nicely…um…a piece of crap.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
I like Pro Football Talk. I don’t always go to their website (because I’m always on this website) but when I go, there’s good lists of things to read.
I don’t mind dogging people, but PFT’s not that bad. I guess they’re big time now, so they’re cool to knock.
Florio was King Chicken when the original Vick business broke, though. He made his name off of his saturation coverage of that.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
shit i like pft too i was just talking about the commenters.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Clemens looks bad because half the oline is out.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
yeah thats the reason.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
That’s disappointing. I was hoping Neal Brennan would bring the funny. I’m getting tired of the Apatow shit.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Yea, Merjr, when a guy has less than two seconds to get rid of the ball or scramble, he’s not going to fair well.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
48 yard pass for sanchez.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
It has some moments but all the funny stuff is in the trailer. Disappointing. Also it seemed just off, if you see it you’ll know what i mean.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
so, gsg what isnt sanchez’s excuse?
August 14th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
Awesome catches and running after catches.
Don’t get me wrong, Sanchez had nice touch to Cotchery.
August 14th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
so now the line is magically better? if i was kellen clemens i would start screaming conspiracy.
August 14th, 2009 at 8:07 pm
Shonn Greene. Only reason I am watching this Jets game.
Show me somethin’, young man.
And I am going to see The Goods. District 9 will have to wait. I want something funny for a Friday night.
August 14th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
Tavaris Jackson throws incomplete to John Black Cock.
August 14th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
was in the car and missed the Sanchez TD drive. how great did he look?
August 14th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
I give him credit TBL. He looked poised and confident. First pass was a 45 yard pass down the sideline. After that, just some dump offs.
Erik Ainge would probably look better with his shirt off by a car like the rest of the VOLS than playing NFL football. He looks terrible.
Give Shonn Greene the ball!
August 14th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Donald Brown is a beast. He fucks Sanchez in his ear hole.
August 14th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
sanders – You should’ve added another Hawkeye to the fold. Why not complete the trifeca of Dallas, Bob and Shonn?
August 14th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
I wouldn’t have minded Greene if they hadn’t been able to get Brown. He’s a good compliment to Addai. Addai’s shifty but brittle. Brown is one cut but a bull. The Hawkeyes have been awfully good to the Colts, though. Maybe we can trade Vinatieri for Kaeding.
August 14th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
i think greene and ringer from MSU are gonna be steals of that draft.
August 14th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
This is very funny to me.

August 14th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Alpha King by Three Floyds Brewery is a damn fine beer. Give it a try sometime.
August 14th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
so was sanchez playing against the number 1 or 2 offense of the st louis rams in the preseason?
August 14th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
Angry, do yourself a favor and try the Gumball Head from Three Floyds. Also, excellent.
It smells like a bag of weed oddly enough.
August 14th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
August 14th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Yes gumballhead is very nice as is the dreadnaught IPA.
I visited the brewery a few months ago. Good times.
August 14th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
how great did he look?
He looked like a young Joe Namath.
August 14th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
I have some Victory Prima Pils waiting for me when I get home from work. I’d meet people at bars, but if I get out before 2am, it’d be a win.
August 14th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
BB what do you do?
August 14th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Supervise a night sanitation crew at a turkey processing plant (they turn raw turkey breast into deli meat) in Philly. But in reality, nothing. I just make sure these idiots don’t mess up anything. It’s not bad since it’s only for a few months.
August 14th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
It pays salary, health insurance, and pays for my classes at Rutgers until I go to Maryland next fall. Those are the only reasons I’d take it.
August 14th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Felix Pie hit for the cycle. Mike Scioscia not happy. Not sure if he’s unhappy Pie went for the triple or him clapping and acting happy afterward. He wasn’t trying to show anyone up, even Palmer agreed on that. Pie hit in the gap where no one was, he could have stood up going into third if he wanted. Have a feeling someone will be plunked this game or in the series. O’s dropping 16 on the Angels so far.
August 14th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
I’m watching that game, too (I think I remember you being an O’s fan). But I’m hoping they don’t score all their runs for the next 8 games tonight. Cuz this is the first time the bats have been alive in weeks.
August 14th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
Brandon Inge hit a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth to give the Tigers a 1-0 win over the Royals. You’re thinking, “they only beat the Royals 1-0? ‘The fuck?!”
Your answer is Zach Greinke threw a helluva game as did Jarrod Washburn. Greinke three hits and seven Ks in seven innings. Washburn three hits in eight innings. A great duel.
I’m staying in tonight. Don’t do this too much on Fridays. But it’s been a transition week at work for me. We had some reshuffling and I’m now getting up at 6 a.m., doing my daily three-mile run then going into for a day shift. I’m used to sleeping like 1 a.m. to 9-10 or so. It’s been rough and I’m wore out. Trying to recharge for a 90 and sunny Saturday.
August 14th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
Cakes has a 35 game OBP streak right now. Guy has been lights out for me.
Off to see The Goods. Hopefully Ari doesn’t disappoint.
August 14th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Well said. Yep, I’m an O’s fan. Good thing they did score all of hese runs, they’d likely blow the game if they didn’t. I hope Tillman can get his first win.
August 14th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Minus Markakis, they’ve been dead. But Nick has been steady as hell, as always.
August 14th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Yeah, let’s hope. But this bullpen just invents ways to lose. We can thank Baez for completely ruining his value as the deadline approached. On the other hand, I still just can’t get over how badly we mauled the Mariners in that deal. It’s still funny, and will keep being funny for at least another decade.
August 14th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
shaun hill looks turrible
August 14th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
I agree on the bullpen and Nick. Bedard is down and out again. It’s like the Glen Davis deal but we got the break this time. Pie with the shaving cream pie! Jones whiffed on the first attempt but Andino came through on the second. As Matt Wieters once said, “Any time you get a pie in the face, it’s a good night.”
August 14th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
He shoulda been much more in the Heisman conversation last year, but his team was relegated to ESPNU for most of the season.
August 14th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Chris Tillman with a pie in the face, during an interview in a hallway in the locker room area! And he hardly wipes anything off and keeps talking! Funny stuff.
August 14th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
We’ve been on both sides of that though. The Frank Robinson trade was great (no shit), then Glen Davis, then the Erik Bedard trade. I’ll take 2/3.
That’s funny about Tillman, we’re gonna have a nasty rotation!
August 14th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
Nice comeback by the Sox. Martinez was a huge pickup for Sox
August 15th, 2009 at 12:00 am
That was completely random with Tillman. Adam Jones again with the pie delivery. He walked calmly up behind him and smashed it in his face, laughed and walked away. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen that done in a locker room type of setting, even if it was outside of it.
August 15th, 2009 at 1:30 am
Simmons is pissed…
August 15th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Duffy, doubt your around but, Jozy Altidore didn’t make the team for Hull City today. Think he just didn’t have the fitness yet? they do have three starters from last year on the bench too.
August 15th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Watched Saints/Bengals last night. 2 opinions:
1. Vilma: will finish in top 5 for NFL Defensive MVP under Gregg Williams, minimum.
2. Jason David is actually worse than he’s been the last 2 years combined. That just defies conventional “suckness.”
August 15th, 2009 at 8:23 am
So he threw more interceptions than touchdowns, fucked a couple of chicks, and the New York Media deified him anyway?
August 15th, 2009 at 9:54 am
Saturday at a major. Time for Sergio to pick it up a notch and surge up the leaderboard….Oops…Gotta make the cut to surge on Saturday.
August 15th, 2009 at 10:31 am
Jay hated ESPN before ESPN existed.
August 15th, 2009 at 10:32 am
yeah and simmons also claims to have come up with the idea of mt rushmore of sports lists. boy who cried wolf….
August 15th, 2009 at 10:48 am
Come on So. I can’t argue with what you say. But I wish I could throw 47 more interceptions than touchdowns, have a lifetime starting record below .500, lead my teams to the playoffs twice, lead my league in interceptions four times:
and, you know, still be in the Hall of Fame.
/but Kenny Stabler isn’t good enough
August 15th, 2009 at 10:53 am
and, you know, still be in the Hall of Fame.
I didn’t say hating ESPN before ESPN existed wasn’t a reasoned approach.
August 15th, 2009 at 11:01 am
Hey, did anyone see Brad Pitt on Maher last night? Is that shit not blowing up on the internet? I assume Pitt is gonna get a lot of flak.
August 15th, 2009 at 11:02 am
what did pitt say?
August 15th, 2009 at 11:06 am
pitt said he used to smoke pot?!!1! big fucking deal
August 15th, 2009 at 11:07 am
SO MANY THINGS. Religion is not helpful. Christians are mucking up the process. Maher told a story about Pitt rolling the most perfect joints all night at a New Year’s eve party a few years ago no matter how hammered he got, which Pitt confirmed by saying “I am an artist”. “We have socialized Medicine where I live. We’re fine. We’re GREAT.” A lot more pretty virulently antireligious stuff.
August 15th, 2009 at 11:07 am
who is he gonna get flak from?
August 15th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Here’s the pot part.
No, the pot thing was over the top but pretty harmless, it’s the religious stuff that doesn’t seem to be available that I assume should it end up in the right hands (see what I did there) could get him crucified for a week on talk radio/Fox.
August 15th, 2009 at 11:15 am
well i have learned long ago not to take my political lessons from actors and musicians who make millions of dollars and really dont live in the real world. i dont care how they lean politically as long as they make good movies and music. and im sure brad pitt is on the socialized medical plan.
August 15th, 2009 at 11:24 am
i nearly forgot, the first amendment and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness only applied to those who agree with the religious right.
i have a feeling i’m going to agree with brad pitt when i hear his comments on religion.
August 15th, 2009 at 11:29 am
just found the brad pitt article, and i do agree with him.
August 15th, 2009 at 11:31 am
well im certainly not religious but to place blame on christians for mucking up the process(what process was he he talking about?) is a cop-out answer that would get bill maher and his audience to smile real big and agree with him. i mean you dont hear anyone blaming muslims for terrorism do you? no you hear it is only a small percentage.
August 15th, 2009 at 11:35 am
lets be honest both sides think “if you dont agree with me you’re wrong!”
August 15th, 2009 at 11:52 am
all i know is ashton kutcher was on bill mahers show trying to talk politics. somehow the audience didnt laugh at him mockingly. major props to the audience.
August 15th, 2009 at 11:55 am
only because he was saying what they wanted to hear.
August 15th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
all i know is ashton kutcher was on bill mahers show trying to talk politics. somehow the audience didnt laugh at him mockingly. major props to the audience
they only do that to Republicans
August 15th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
antireligious stuff
Awsome, Pitt’s not as crazy as i thought. But Travolta can talk about how we all come from aliens (or whatever the hell those nut scientologist believe) and people look the other way because talkin about religion is touchy and gets ignored, but denying it is touchy and draws attention.
August 15th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
and inglorious bastards is gonna be the shit.
August 15th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
ugh, religion talk is taking me away from madden and boneless buffalo wings…
anyone play the new madden yet?
August 15th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
CBS doing the college football preview right now. Tony Barnhart on the set.

August 15th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Boswell makes my head hurt. He set his Strasburg ceiling at $12-15M which is debatable. But it’s this statement about what happens if Strasburg is not signed that makes me shake my head “the Nats will get the No. 2 overall pick next year which (after a lot of studyiung) is probably worth 90-to-95% as much as No. 1 overall. “Oh, but Strasburg is special. He’s the best ever.” So was Ben McDonald.”In what universe will the 1A in 2010 be worth 90-95% of Strasburg?
Keith Law (3:27 PM)
The expected value of the second pick is something like half the expected value of the first pick. Getting that pick as compensation for not signing Strasburg is like having your car stolen but finding out they left the cup holder in your garage.
August 15th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Deal. I think today might be the day that I retire the Blackhawk logo for the football season. I’m debating between this and this for a new gravatar.
The Hawkeye one is currently leading.
August 15th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I just went to Tony Barnhart’s blog, and I’ve come away from it with the opinion that every UGA/GaTech fan should be sterilized for the good of the gene pool.
It’s one thing for fans to be ignorant and obnoxious if their program has actually been relevant in the past 15 years, it’s a whole other thing when two groups of fans from second rate also rans assault my eyes with poorly worded and spelled diatribes on which team sucks more cock.
August 15th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
deal. and the winner(us) can crap all over the loser’s(you)team all season long with no repercussions.
August 15th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
sc: the second one
August 15th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
I feel like the defense is vastly improved, every time I do anything on offense I feel like I was lucky.
August 15th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
i just changed my gravatar..a little
August 15th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
sponge: i honestly feel like everything that i had serious gripes with in the last edition has been fixed. better running the ball, no miraculous CPU running around and gunning it to a barely open receiver, more realistic d-line play with the stick.
played 3 games today, and it just froze…damnit…
August 15th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
how does it look?
August 15th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
Good to see TBL and Co. on the ball today with posts.
I keed.
They’re all probably hungthefuckover, unlike me. Tomorrow, however might be different. Who’s with me?
August 15th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
I’m 12-5 so far in Madden online. My only complaints are that tackles are broken a little easy and there are way too many kickoff/punt returns for TD’s. But still a great game. Probably will spend a couple hours playing today.
August 15th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
I’m in, Ndub. Tonight will be a mess.
August 15th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
Same here, didn’t go outast night so I have twice as much drinking money as I usually do on a saturday
August 15th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Deal. I think today might be the day that I retire the Blackhawk logo for the football season.
SC: I’d go w/ this one
mrejr: yours looks the same to me
August 15th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
you dont see a bears zippo lighter in the picture? brock samson would only allow something he could light his cigarettes with
August 15th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
only brock samson. hit ctrl f5, log out, and back in. it worked for me when I was changing every other day a month or so ago
August 15th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Anyone else bummed out Tiger is ruining another major? I hate when he does this, besides the 97 Masters, which was awesome to watch, when he wins like this it’s so boring. He just puts it in cruise control and everyone else fades. G Dammit.
August 15th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Spoke too soon! TW misses a 3 footer for par! Love it.
August 15th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
did it work now?
August 15th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Wow. Feels different.
I really feel like football is finally here with this change.
August 15th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Ah crap. It won’t take effect until a new thread.
/rings front desk bell
August 15th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

In over two years of reading TBL, I can’t remember a day that there hasn’t been a post.
August 15th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Matt Cain drills David Wright in the head with a fastball. Wright looks knocked out. Yup that pretty much puts the exclamation point on this season. Jesus. What a nightmare.
August 15th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
It’s one thing for fans to be ignorant and obnoxious if their program has actually been relevant in the past 15 years, it’s a whole other thing when two groups of fans from second rate also rans assault my eyes with poorly worded and spelled diatribes on which team sucks more cock.
+1
August 15th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
@msuspartan – Me too. This is odd. Fuck it.
Anyone watching Lions-Falcons? Just flipped it on to get a score, and Detroit looks like the same fuckbag of a franchise that I’ve grown used to since age six.
Give up a 40-yard TD to Michael Turner, leaving a massive hole in the line and missing tackles in the process. Watch receivers drop wide open passes. Watch the offense get stuck in 3rd and long. Watch a QB throw a pick six.
FML. I’m going to the minor league ball game and am gonna get drunk.
August 15th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
I hope this isn’t misconstrued as SSP, but I’m thinking about putting up a preseason NFL / Strikeforce thread. (mostly for you guys, JPQ and mrejr)
I wonder where TBL is? Hernia is on vacation and I think CRM is out too. Interns? Anyone?
Perhaps more tweaks being made to the site this weekend, who knows.
August 15th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
Well there is a redesign coming…
August 15th, 2009 at 6:16 pm
Drew Stanton has actually looked pretty good for the Lions. Somewhere, Sparty is giving fist bumps.
August 15th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
finally got a new post … sorry it took so long
August 15th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Matt Cain drills David Wright in the head with a fastball. Wright looks knocked out.
PTI was talking the other day about a new batting helmet that protects against a 100 MPH ball (instead of current 70 MPH). An informal poll of MLB’ers said they wouldn’t wear the new one because it would make them look like dorks.
Wonder if Wright cares how he would look now?
August 15th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
That helmet isn’t out yet though, so it’s not like Wright had a choice or was one of those guys that said he wouldn’t wear it.
But any Major leaguer that chooses to not wear that helmet is a moron. If you get caught to the left of the ear flap it’s curtains.
