Yardwork: Here Come The Phillies
Baseball, Video August 21st. 2009, 11:30am
Phillies 12, D-Backs 3: Philly is hot. They’ve won four in a row and eight of their last 10. Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth both have had ridiculous weeks. Howard has six homers in his last seven games and Edge has smacked five of his own since Saturday. Last night Joe Blanton gave the bullpen some rest, allowing 10 hits over eight innings and keeping the damage to just three runs. He also singled twice. Everyone on this team is hitting. The Philly Phanatic cannot freaking believe it. Jamie Moyer, however, continues to sulk. Up next? Bloodshed at Citi Field.
Dodgers 7, Cubs 2: Russell Martin’s sixth inning grand slam off Ángel Guzmán broke this one open. With absolutely nothing on the line, Kevin Gregg pitched a quiet 1-2-3 ninth.
Astros 4, Marlins 1: Without the services of the visibly endearing Wesley Wright, the Astros pulled out the win. Wandy Rodriguez shut down the bats for eight innings and even helped his own cause with an RBI double.
Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 1: This was all Jon Lester. Eight innings, three hits and one earned run. The affable J.D. Drew was 4-for-4 with two home runs. The Yankees are in Fenway this weekend for three. If the Sox can sweep, they’re only 3.5 back. Guess what? These two will square on ESPN’s Sunday night baseball!
Rangers 11, Twins 1: Minnesota starter Anthony Swarzak put on quite a show for the folks in Arlington, giving up four home runs in 5 1/3 innings. Marlon Byrd’s career season continues — he went deep twice — but I’m still not a believer. Funeral services for the Twins will be held at 10am this morning.
Reds 2, Giants 1; 10 innings: Drew Stubbs’ first career homer to lead off the top of the 10th was the difference. I was curious if he was related to former Cowboy Daniel Stubbs but then I saw this picture. Probably not related. Approximately six undead people attended this wild afternoon game.
Tigers 7, Mariners 6: The Tigers got two in the bottom of the ninth off David Aardsma, who’s had a rough week. Clete Thomas had the game-winning RBI single. In four starts for Detroit, Jarrod Washburn has given up 17 runs, including eight homers. He craves pressure.
It’s Friday! That means on one side of the New York Post a Red Sox fan is being blamed for subway attacks, and on the other the Sox are in a casket. Standard procedure.

After watching this video, speechless is more than safe to assume.
From the catchy music to the incredible quality of each still picture, this video is a must-see:
And finally, from the incomparable Fightins’, Jameer Nelson goes deep.

Approximately six undead people attended this wild afternoon game.
zombies!?!?!?!?!?!
August 21st, 2009 at 11:36 AM
Is the NY Post aware that there is something called a Wild Card, and that Wild Card winners are almost as likely to win the World Series as Division winners?
August 21st, 2009 at 11:38 AM
Jameer Nelson goes deep.
That’s nothing, Mo Williams had 30 homeruns in pregame warmups this year.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:40 AM
I want to be Wesley Wright’s friend.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:41 AM
What amazes me is the Post never jumps the gun.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:42 AM
Cardinals win again, Cubs lose again. Times the Cardinal’s broadcasters referred to John Smoltz as a “future Hall of Famer”, “veteran presence”, or “total professional”? 2672.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:43 AM
@TST: I will never get over Wesley Wright.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:43 AM
I want to be Wesley Wright’s friend.
I want him to stay in Triple A
August 21st, 2009 at 11:51 AM
only if the WC winner was the Yankees would they have this POV.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:52 AM
Wow, we get no mention of the Braves 2 days in a row. I guess because they beat the Mets and no one gives a shit about the Mets. 2 days ago they had season highs in hits and runs, and 3 homers went over the head of Frenchy. Ha.
Yesterday, Kawakami was a better pitcher than Santana. Turns out he brings it against other good pitchers. 1 run through seven.
Beginning with his eight shutout innings against the Blue Jays on May 22, Kawakami has opposed starters with sub-3.00 ERAs on seven different occasions. And he has produced a 2.98 ERA in those starts.
Oh, and an illegal mexican was found dead on Chipper ranch yesterday morning.

does that thing shoot hotdogs? thats amazing.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:52 AM
they showed him more after that brendan ryan grand slam than they did the actual guy that hit it. the slurping was getting a little disgusting.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:53 AM
I agree, should have been more.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:55 AM
@Duder: It sure does. Not sure if they do it anymore because the hot dogs were exploding. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RSqIflCa3o
@shawnfromtex: Completely forgot about that. Explains a lot.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:58 AM
hey id rather have 1/2 a hot dog land in my lap than 0 hot dogs
August 21st, 2009 at 12:02 PM
Holy shit, that’s like 8 bucks a shot. (TWSS)
August 21st, 2009 at 12:08 PM
Finish that sentence with anything that does not happen on Long Island and the answer is NO.
If the Daily News didn’t employ Mike Lupica, the Post would be the worst paper in that city.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:10 PM
@TST – Word to the wise. Do NOT allow James Loney to hit a grand slam in game one of the NLDS. You know how the story ends after that.
/runs away crying

Cards should take that series in 4…. then lose to the Giants in 6.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:10 PM
He was facing his old team. The one that knew him best. Gave up four of the eight dingers to them. I’ll give him a pass on that. Let’s not forget he dueled Zack Greinke last week to a 0-0 tie through eight innings.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:14 PM
That’s true, but in the other two as a Tiger he got absolutely hammered by the Orioles and Twins.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:16 PM
I bet Kobe could hit more homeruns than Lebron…
August 21st, 2009 at 12:17 PM
Over/under on innings pitched for Smoltz on Sunday?
Disclaimer I am a Card fan.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:20 PM
Return of the Remdawg to NESN tonight! The pitching matchups are horribly lop sided for the Yankees on Friday & Saturday’s games, but I”m actually feeling more optimistic about this series than the last one. The starting 9 last night was the best we’ve put on the field all year. Yeah I said we.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:21 PM
i’ll say fewer innings for smoltz sunday than pedro.
turn back the clock sunday in MLB!
mickey tettleton will be catching in detroit.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:22 PM
Approximately six undead people attended this wild afternoon game.
How could that be? The Marlins played AT Houston, not at home
August 21st, 2009 at 12:22 PM
Only ’cause LBJ is a pitcher, and Kobe is a catcher.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:25 PM
@CJ: I agree. Whenever the match-ups are being stressed as “so lopsided” one way, it usually goes the opposite direction. I see the Sox taking two out of three.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:28 PM
Your not dueling when you shut down the Royals.

Cards should take that series in 4…. then lose to the Giants in 6.
Getouttahere, you think the Giants can beat the Phillies to get to the NL Championship Series?
August 21st, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Smoltz has the Padres in Petco. IF he can’t go five there he’s not going five anywhere.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:32 PM
I’m more interested in the skank war than anything
August 21st, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Pedro has the 2nd string Mets team in Citi field.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:51 PM
Hmmm. First, that would require the Giants to make the playoffs. Unlikely to happen. Second, it would require the Giants to beat the Phillies. DEFINITELY not happening.
August 21st, 2009 at 12:58 PM
Happening. Book it.
August 21st, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Nope.
August 21st, 2009 at 1:09 PM

August 21st, 2009 at 1:17 PM
So 5 and a 1/3, three earned runs each?
August 21st, 2009 at 2:42 PM
Since it’s been 2-2.5 weeks since he’s pitched competitively, I’m going a max of 5(if he doesn’t blow up). Sunday will pretty much be a “bullpen game”, I wager and, in fact, it could be that way on both sides. The Pads starter, Cesar Carrillo, is 1-1, with a very Smoltz-like ERA of 11.88.
Disclaimer: I’m also a Card fan.
Oh, btw, after last night, the Cardinals are 23-3 since July 1st in games started by Carpenter, Wainwright, and Pineiro.
