Onion Bag: Man U Frenzy, Brawl at Chelsea’s Training Ground
Soccer, Video, WAG August 24th. 2009, 4:00pm
This is Sthefany Brito a Brazilian actress, and the wife of young A.C. Milan stud Alexandre Pato. It’s good to be a Brazilian soccer player.
Bulging the Auld Onion Bag: Previously impotent, Manchester United displayed the stamina of a curious 13-year-old, scoring five goals in the final 35 minutes to dispatch Wigan Athletic. Lil Mikey Owen scored his first goal in a United shirt and Wayne Rooney his 100th. Arsenal set the pundits atwitter with a 4-1 win over Pompey, though Andrei Arshavin is not satiated. Tottenham continued their delusion of Bill Simmons, going top of the table on goal difference after a 2-1 derby win at West Ham.
Training Brawl: The referee called off a friendly between Qatari side Al-Ahli and Chelsea’s reserve team devolved into a violent free-for-all. Chelsea players received “karate kicks, knee-high tackles, and had their hair pulled out and eyes gouged.” The incident began when an Al-Ahli player tackled Chelsea left-back Ben Gordon above the knee with two feet. Chelsea removed video footage from the match and all references from the website. First-team players weren’t involved. I’m sure John Terry found this as hilarious as 9/11.
Replacing Kaka: The next big thing from Brazil, Alexandre Pato, scored two goals for A.C. Milan with a couple near misses and a third being ruled offside in their 2-1 win at Siena. Charged with being the primary trequarista, in the Milan attack, Ronaldinho looked frisky. Elsewhere in Serie A, Juventus beat Chievo 1-0 and, despite Samuel Eto’o’s penalty, Inter Milan shocking were held 1-1 at home by Bari.
Stabbing: West Ham defender Calum Davenport is in serious but stable condition after being stabbed by his sister’s boyfriend. Said boyfriend attacked Davenport and his mother, stabbing him repeatedly in the legs with a kitchen knife. His mother is recovering as well. No estimates on the extent of his injury or how his career will be affected at this point.
All About the Elizabeths: Everton manager David Moyes puffed his chest and put on his big boy pants, but could not stop Joleon Lescott from doubling his salary with Manchester City in a $36 million transfer. Those who saw Arsenal rick-roll him in the first week, might feel he’s a little over valued. It seems no one told Mark Hughes he could buy better players outside England for half as much money.
Under Pressure: These are the days it never rains but it pours for new Bayern Munich manager Louis Van Gaal. Mainz beat Bayern 2-1 with goals from Bance and Ivanschitz. Bayern sit 14th in the Bundesliga table with just two points, their worst Bundesliga start in 43 years. Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg and Schalke sit joint top on seven points. Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, in an incident surprising no one, is facing some trouble after trading elbows with Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic, a coveted future European star who the luminaries at U.S. Soccer found unsuitable.
Goal of the Weekend: Abou Diaby (Arsenal) vs. Portsmouth – A competent finish, but Eduardo makes a sick move to create the chance.

Wow, Gerrard is an idiot.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:36 PM
So who is taking over for Rafa tomorrow? Klinsman?
August 24th, 2009 at 4:39 PM
Looks like Data likes to behave quite illogically. Seriously though, fuck Terry, fuck Lampard, and fuck Gudjohnsson.
How the hell do you get more money by playing absolutely abysmally against Arsenal? Hope Man City knows what they’re getting into with Lescott.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:42 PM
They get Lescott over Richard Dunne, at least it’s an upgrade.

At this point Bruce Arena would be better. What the fuck is wrong with Benitez. I understand their back line is a bit decimated, and Alonso is gone, but fuck, make some adjustments; that’s why they pay you the big bucks.

jesus 36 million for Lescott? He’s good but cmon.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:46 PM
Oops I misread that as pounds. Really 22 million pounds is only 36 million dollars?
August 24th, 2009 at 4:49 PM
He isn’t worth close to that. But, It’s Man City, they won’t pay a fair price again because of their new owners.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:51 PM
also, America has to have the best collection of keepers on Earth right? Too bad we can’t do that with other positions.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:55 PM
spain has the best goalies in the world, imo.

Until this summer Berbatov was the most expensive striker ever bought, so you’re not in much of a position to be criticizing spending habits.
They would have been smarter to go after someone better, but someone better isn’t interested in playing there I suppose. City will run out of mercenaries eventually.

I seriously hope Lucas never sees the field for Liverpool again. I would rather play reserve players then see him out there.
They can cope without Alonso, they coped with him being hurt and shitty for the two years prior to last, but they can’t rely on the formation that he was the lynchpin of. Jesus christ.

and berbatov is one of the best strikers in the world.
You also don’t see us overpaying for every player on the squad.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:02 PM
… agree to disagree on the assessment of Berbs.

This thread missed the important part. Those are goddess tits.

It’s new money vs. old money. Old money spends the same amount over a longer time period- the new money has to spend quickly to catch up. Glass houses from my POV

Exactly Mister Sausage, exactly.
I would love to have City’s money. Any fan that says they wouldn’t is either full of shit, or a Madrid fan.
August 24th, 2009 at 6:17 PM
at what exactly? he doesn’t run. He doesn’t score. He links up play reasonably well, though you can find players who do that, run and don’t cost £30m.
I use the currency converter on my Mac Dashboard to translate the values. Maybe the dollar jumped today.

little late but but its true, man city will be held hostage until they get their starting line up. Once they have that, i think a lot of the leverage of other teams will subside.
Berbatov is an interesting player. I think he’s a great second forward, but he’s not dynamic enough to dominate a game. If you pair him with someone like eduardo i think hes a much better player. Playin wth rooney doesn’t bring enough 1 on 1, slashing threat to the offense. I’m not a fan of valencia, but i think nani can be a competent role replacement for ronaldo
