Sanchez vs. the Ravens: Too Late to Revise Those Projections?
1-liner, NFL August 25th. 2009, 11:15amMark Sanchez on MNF: Painful. His o-line let him down against one of the best defenses in the league. His happy feet in the pocket left the Dancing with the Stars executives drooling. (Conversely, CBS suits probably put the kibosh on having Simms and Nantz fly to Houston for the Texans-Jets opener.) We don’t care about the TD pass from Sanchez to Leon Washington – Lewis and Reed were off the field and it looked like a backup was trying to hang with the guy who led the NFL in yards from scrimmage last year. We saw little or no confidence from Sanchez. Your move, Rex Ryan: Start Kellen Clemens against the Giants (a better defense than the Ravens), and then start Sanchez in the final game. We’re still bullish on Sanchez as a pro and we think he’ll have a fine rookie season – but we’re having second thoughts about him as a starter based on what we saw in the first quarter and a brutal first three games against fast, aggressive, tough defenses: Texans, Patriots, Titans. Two of those three were in the Top 10 last year; the Texans have a ton of defensive talent. Let Clemens take a pounding, and then start Sanchez in the dome against the Saints weak D. Of interest, maybe: The last QB competition Sanchez was in, his opponents were Aaron Corp and Mitch Mustain, both of whom might be backups this year to freshman Matt Barkley.
