The Top 3 QBs from the 2004 Draft are Getting Paid
1-liner, NFL August 25th. 2009, 10:00amPhilip Rivers vs. Eli Manning vs. Big Ben: Recently, the No. 1 pick of the 2004 NFL draft, Eli Manning, signed a lucrative 6-year, $97.5 million contract. The No. 4 pick that year, Philip Rivers, signed a similar deal yesterday for slightly less money – 6-years, $92 million. The 11th pick from that same top-heavy draft, Ben Roethlisberger, got the most money, but he’s also locked in the longest – 8-years, $102 million. Given the opportunity to “draft over,” we’d go Rivers, Roethlisberger, Manning. [Union-Trib]

Wait, wait, wait, so you’re saying you’d take Rivers over Big Ben?
But what about the…RINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:04 AM
you sir, have my seal of approval.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:06 AM
spencer would have dfafted Big Ben…wait a second…he did!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:07 AM
August 25th, 2009 at 10:07 AM
and he turned it into Lamont Jordan!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:08 AM
i dunno bens had better stats than rivers 3 out of their 5 years in the league
August 25th, 2009 at 10:08 AM
If it wasn’t for the weather/cold/field conditions in Pittsburgh, you would have taken Ben first
/not really

big ben is a year younger, but also has 2 more full seasons of beatings on his body.
a bit pissed that i just watched the opening of cowherd. remember how i said i had the sanchez thing written 15 mins ago? (see other thread comments). Well, he just went with my exact same thought (start clemens for the first 3 games which are tough, then bring in sanchez)
August 25th, 2009 at 10:13 AM
only a few months younger. 2 years ago he put up ridiculous numbers and he seems healthy again.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:13 AM
Rivers was behind Brees for the first 2 years. He didn’t start until year 3. Hard to have worse stats than zero.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:14 AM
don’t forget derek anderson too!!!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:15 AM
Big day today – 1st fantasy draft of the season at lunch (for the work league).
This is the order I’d expect them to go during the fantasy draft as well.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:15 AM
Depends who has the first pick. No one handles the New York media like Eli.

Swear to god I’m not saying one more thing, but last I check every year that Rivers has played SD has been considered “the most talented” team (so I dont want to hear about Cutlers bad defense theory), and theyve gone from 14 wins, to 11, to 8. Oh and he’s an impressive 3-3 in the playoffs.
I do like PhilRiv, really, hes good.
/fuck yins (/pittsburgh’d)
August 25th, 2009 at 10:16 AM
Good for you. The Giants on the other hand would pick Manning.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:17 AM
big ben has had only one really great, stand out year, the rest were pretty average, and manning has had really just average seasons each year in the league.
rivers just had his “great season”, does he revert back to 20-25 Td’s and 10-15 picks, or does he keep up with 30+td’s and around 10 picks?
August 25th, 2009 at 10:18 AM
gates and LT have been shells of their former selves since rivers’ first year…and that OL has taken HUGE steps in the wrong direction.
his top two targets are vincent jackson and chris fucking chambers…not good.
and a lot of the record shit has to do with the defense falling apart since wade phillips left. oh, and norv turner being there (which has admittedly helped rivers A LOT…turner knows QB’s and playcalling).
i know im biased, but im a HUGE rivers fan. hate his attitude, but i think he’s a top 5 QB.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:18 AM
If they did it over again and the order was changed, whichever QB the Steelers took would have 2 rings right now.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:19 AM
and give away a bunch of their draft picks!!!
because it’s not bad enough to pick the shittiest QB of the bunch, they had to drastically overpay too!!!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:20 AM
Me too. I’d put him at 4 after Manning, Brady and Brees. TBL, I wouldn’t worry about Cowherd’s opinion on Sanchez/Clemens. He covered Clemens in college and has admitted he’s friends with him and is openly rooting for him to win the job.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:21 AM
yep.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:23 AM
[snaps finger] Oh no you di-in’t.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:24 AM
and if the chargers knew Brees would buonce back from his shoulder surgery to be one of the top 3 QB’s in the league, would they have picked manning and traded him for Rivers in the first place?
they could have kept brees and picked larry fitz first.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:26 AM
!!!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:26 AM
Given the opportunity to “draft over,” we’d go Rivers, Roethlisberger, Manning.
you sir, have my seal of approval.
Yeah, what that guy said.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:28 AM
I’d take the shittiest QB who could best help me win the big game. Rivers on the other hand has shown that he can lose impressively, and of course to his huge fans, it’s everyone else’s fault. Like I said it’s always Eli only wins because of…………. and Rivers lost because of………..
August 25th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
same can be said about brady though. rest were good, but nothing more than a 2-1 td/int ratio.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
Do you have some sort of electronic periodical to which I might be able to subscribe?
August 25th, 2009 at 10:31 AM
you’re fucking joking right?
winning in indy against a 13-3 colts team in the playoffs? going against the undefeated patriots in foxboro with NO ACL? win or lose, i don’t see how you can hate rivers for what he does on the field.
and lets not pretend that eli is john elway 2.0…his “big game” legacy is sealed by the luckiest catch in football history outside of the immaculate reception and a blown coverage where ellis hobbs stumbled. awesome.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:32 AM
I don’t know – it’s hard to imagine Rivers or Eli putting up that same kind of performance against the Seahawks.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:33 AM
a 2:1 TD ratio is pretty fucking good. we’re spoiled by brees/peyton/brady when it comes to QB effiency.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:35 AM
try this.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:35 AM
i agree, every QB will have at least one “career year”. I think the difference between Brady and Big Ben is Brady was more consistent, but he’s had a much larger sample size. Rivers, so far, seems to be more on the Brady end of the spectrum with consistency after putting up similar numbers with yardage, completion % and attempts.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:36 AM
Gotta go with Flacco here.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:37 AM
When you have to resort to made up concepts like clutch to prove Player A is better than Player B than Player B is definitely the better player.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:39 AM
I admit that I can’t imagine Eli making that tackle, no.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:40 AM
+1
August 25th, 2009 at 10:40 AM
big ben is a year younger
only a few months younger. 2 years ago he put up ridiculous numbers and he seems healthy again.
I don’t think so. I heard since Pedro Gomez hasn’t worked since Bonds retired, ESPN has dispatched him to Pittsburgh to report on the weekly faux injuries of the world’s largest drama queen.
Heard Ben has scheduled a live boil lancing for next Thursday at 2 on ESPN2.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:41 AM
+1 Ol-chimp-ic Gold Medal, Miz.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:42 AM
no doubt but this idea that ben is horrible is kind of a joke.
exactly why he should get more credit for his sb year in 05
August 25th, 2009 at 10:44 AM
you meant 2nd largest right? lebron #1, of course.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:45 AM
That’s true, but even hovering around a low 90’s QB rating for most of his career is pretty great, considering Young holds the career record of 94-something. Manning’s mind-boggling efficiency from 03-today shouldn’t be held against Brady.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:45 AM
can’t believe it’s been a year since the Ol-chimp-ics. man, time flies…
August 25th, 2009 at 10:46 AM
I think Rivers, Ben, Eli is a good re-draft but a good question is would you have selected Tony Romo before either of them?
August 25th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
not saying ben is horrible. meant to add that to my post.
he gets the job done, but what keeps me from ranking him in the top echelon of QB’s is the lack of consistency from season to season.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:49 AM
Duder bringing the heat today, +4.95 internet points
In no way am I saying Ben is better than Brady, but for years people said Brady was a system QB who sucked and who’s defense won games and blah blah blah, then he got the best pass protecting line in football and arguably the most dangerous receiver to ever play the game and BAM, now he’s greatest evar. What a coincidence.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:50 AM
Winning at Tampa Bay, Winning at Dallas, Winning at Green Bay in horrid conditions trumps that shit…….Here’s the cherry on top…
The Patriots were undefeated after they played the Chargers, but weren’t undefeated after they played the Giants. There is only 1 QB in Super Bowl history to throw 2 come from behind TD’s in the 4th quarter. He happens to be the same guy who knocked off the undefeated team.
Hopefully, Rivers will get to the point where he can become that “lucky”.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:52 AM
montana was a system QB too…no shame in that label in the NFL.
and brady’s STILL a system QB…he just plays in a system coached by the greatest football coach ever while throwing to the best WR of his generation.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:52 AM
Why? You would get two draft picks by drafting Manning and you still get Rivers!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:52 AM
bsanders will always say Peyton is better, taking into account the Colts O-line averages 5′11″ 220 and their WRs are all amputees.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:54 AM
Who said this? The football media have been sucking his dick since ‘01. And for all this talk about how Brady has had only one great year, go back and look at ‘05. His year was very similiar to Manning’s ‘08 season in that he had to carry an overmatched team into the playoffs. That Pats team was badly hobbled and Brady put them on his back. In my mind, his ‘05 season was more impressive than his ‘07. A lot of guys can drop back for seven seconds and throw up lows to 6-5 freaks or throw three-yard dumps to people quicker than the LB’s and nickels trying to slow them down. Not many NFL QB’s can carry a team.
/I feel dirty now.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:59 AM
um…exactly?
and he didn’t have LT that game either.
do you just hate good QB’s or something? or just don’t like me? it’s gotta be one or the other.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:00 AM
Are you joking bsanders, RINGS!!! was the original Tom V Peyton debate way back in 2004/2005. Peyton had all the gaudy stats and none of the postseason wins. Tom got very little credit before his 3rd ring, his stats were pretty average (3500 yds, tds in the 20’s) “but he just won.”
/Just when I thought I was out…they pull me back in
August 25th, 2009 at 11:00 AM
yes, 18 wins and 1 Giant loss, right?
did Manning play D-Line, too? Did he limit Moss to just 1 TD and ac ouple catches?
The Giants beat the Pats in the Super Bowl, but can you honestly say the Giants didn’t get incredibly lucky on that final drive? Manning was a split second of being ruled sacked by the officials before breaking free and tossing the ball to tyree, who made the luckiest catch in the history of the sport. Manning was a half assed effort by asante samuel away from a game ending pick.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:07 AM
1 out of 3 ain’t bad.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
Here we go (sigh) Rivers lost because…… Wasn’t Michael Turner the backup in that game?
August 25th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
no…rivers lost BECAUSE HE WAS PLAYING AGAINST A MUCH BETTER TEAM.
or is that an excuse too?
August 25th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
As a Giant fan I’m appreciative of Eli but there is a part of me cringing this year that he’s throwing to Hixon and Smith this year. So I would take Rivers too. Probably Ben over him too because he killed it on Shaq Vs. Did you guys see that? Dude was throwing lasers! He’s awesome!
/reality tv’d
August 25th, 2009 at 11:15 AM
It’s easy to cherry pick a moment in any game to prove that someone was lucky. Eli is lucky because he escaped a sack? Was the Tyree catch a TD, or were there still throws that had to be made? Were those passes and catches lucky as well? Was Samuels going to catch that ball with both feet in bounds? The defense played tremendous in the Super Bowl no doubt. But in the 4th quarter they were also tiring and Brady was starting to connect on the underneath stuff.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:18 AM
as a Wild Card team in the Super Bowl, against an undefeated beast, weren’t the Giants as well?
August 25th, 2009 at 11:18 AM
Remember that time the left tackle Eli in the Superbowl got hurt? Sure was scary having only ten Eli’s on the field for those four plays, but they managed to hold down the fort until LT Eli willed his injury away.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:21 AM
Hey man, you’re really witty.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:26 AM
Darrell: I’m not randomly cherry picking moments to prove a point. had Manning been called “in the grasp” and the play called dead, that’s the game right there. Had Samuel held on to that pick, that’s the game. had Manning not chucked the ball right to Tyree, and had Tyree not someone glued the ball to his helmet, that’s the game.
i’m not picking some play that would have been the difference between a 15 yeard gain and a punt in the first quarter. it’s the simple fact that on that game winning drive, had those things not happened the way they did, the giants would not have won the game. what happened was an extremely lucky play that could have very easily ended as a sack or an incompletion.
August 25th, 2009 at 12:40 PM
The Tyree play was on 3rd down. So they would have had one more chance.
