Yardwork: The Joel Piñeiro Phenomenon Cannot be Explained
Baseball, Video August 27th. 2009, 11:15am
Cards 3, Astros 2: Joel Piñeiro has not lost since June 28. This should help you understand why St. Louis has a comfortable nine game lead in the Central. Yesterday he went eight innings and gave up two runs. Just another day at the ballpark for Joel. Matt Holliday has 44 hits in 30 games since joining the Cards. Yes, that’s a Joel Piñeiro collage, which pretty much confirms there’s a collage of you somewhere on the Google.
Dodgers 6, Rockies 1: Order has been temporarily restored in the NL West thanks to a great start from… Randy Wolf? He gave up one run over 7 1/3 and has won four straight. I give up.
Cubs 9, Nats 4: Milton Bradley had a two-run shot and finished with three RBIs. Here’s Milton on Milton — “I feel love for me. I love me. I look in the mirror and I go out there and play.” If you’re going only by his past two games, he’s totally lovable.
Blue Jays 3, Rays 2: Sorry, but when your only offensive contribution comes from Gabe Kapler, the only thing you’re winning is road beef. This one does hurt though, as the Rays had a 2-1 lead going into the ninth. Following a pinch-hit homer from Rod Barajas, J.P. Howell loaded the bases with three walks and then threw a wild pitch. Game over.
Red Sox 3, White Sox 2: Would’ve been nice if the intense Victor Martinez stayed put in Cleveland, or at least away from Boston. Big Papi hit a walk-off shot for the first time in what feels like forever. Here’s Papi — “Victor, man, he just pushed me for every at-bat. He got in my face and started screaming at me. I liked it. It got me in the mood.”
Giants 4, D-Backs 3: Bengie Molina’s clutch three-run shot in the eighth put San Fran to within three games of the wildcard. This is the last division anyone expected to be fun.
Phils 4, Pirates 1; 10 innings: Ryan saved Ryan’s ass. Madson served up a game-tying solo shot in the ninth, but Howard came to the rescue in the 10th with a three-run blast. Philly’s bullpen is shaky.
Orioles 5, Twins 1: The door in the AL Central is wide open, but so far everyone’s pretty bashful. Jeremy Guthrie shut down the Twins for seven innings, however Joe Mauer still managed to go 2-for-4. He’s batting .373. Disgrace.
Angels 4, Tigers 2: Edwin Jackson hadn’t lost in over a month. He was due. The Central is on fire.

Something to Ponder: With Billy Wagner and his beard now in Boston, just how hairy does he plan on getting?
Astounding Mets Stat of the Day: $88 million of the Mets’ $149 million payroll is rotting on the disabled list. Ollie Perez and his knee are the latest to join.
If you don’t scream ‘charge’ at the end of this video, you’re clearly in an awful mood.

And is going to battle Kevin Gregg in an inferno match to see who the least favorite Cub of 2009 is. Check that, a casket match. Neither one of them has ever been “on fire”.

I think Ryan Howard hit that ball completely out of PNC park.
For a guy that bitched about Philly fans (for no reason, by the way…he was actually treated well here), wait till he fucks up in Boston in the middle of a Wild Card run.

I can’t wait for the Cardinals to give Pineiro a $40 million contract this off season, have Dave “I hate you for what you did to my son” Duncan leave, and Pineiro to turn back into a moldy pumpkin. Good times.

None of the central teams should be allowed to make it. You’d need to take the twins offense sox pitching and tigers defense to have a shot
August 27th, 2009 at 11:31 AM
You guys are jerks. You ignore McCutchen’s walk-off yesterday, but highlight Howard today. Jerks I say.

wish i had started piniero last night. i keep thinking he’ll get hammered and it never happens.
white sox and twins both 4.5 back of detroit. anyone want to still argue that’s a race?

Not for the Twins, but ChiSox are still breathing. If they can come home from this road trip at 6-5, they’re still alive. However, starting 0-3 hasn’t helped. I’ll declare them dead after this road trip, but not quite yet.
August 27th, 2009 at 11:36 AM
The twins still play the sox and tigers 12 more times

He pitches in the NL Central. Phenomenon explained.

@fetch – The Twins will win the games in the Metrodome and lose the games on the road. They’re toast man. The pitching is non-existent compared to the start of the season and expectations people had for that rotation.
I agree with you that whoever wins that division will be quickly escorted out of the playoffs. Verlander is capable of winning a game for Detroit, but after that, the playoff teams like NYY, LAA and BOS/TEX have too much offense.

This assumes that Dave Duncan is a good pitching coach. He’s no Lea Mazzone.
/rocks back and forth in my office chair.

I was reading something either Neyer or Olney linked to the other day that indicated that teams that tend to have freakish home road splits due to strange stadiums (like the metrodome) usually not only lose that home field advantage when moving to a normal place but also don’t see an uptick in their road numbers. Dismiss this out of hand Fetch. Dismiss it!

Oh yeah taguchi I have argued against the new stadium from the start. I don’t give a fuck about how nice it is I just want them to win
August 27th, 2009 at 11:52 AM
He’s no Lea Mazzone
How did Leo do in Baltimore?

No way the Pale Hose are going 6-2 on the rest of the trip against NYY and the Twinkies.

Yeah, it’s tough being a pitching coach when you roll out Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz in your starting rotation.
August 27th, 2009 at 12:01 PM
I think hearing Leo Mazzone annnounce is all you need to know about Leo Mazzone.

What’s tough is only winning 1 series with that rotation.
Bobby Cox anyone?

Hernia, you mocked Randy Wolf the very game recap after you mocked Pineiro. I tell you, those two plus Carpenter, Wainwright, and Cliff Lee have been destroying in my MIFL (Most Important Fantasy League) for a very long time. Embrace my winning a large amount of money. Embrace it I say.

My tongue was firmly in cheek while I was writing that. I really just wanted to make fun of Mazzone for the psychotic way he used to rock back and forth on the bench. You think Bobby Cox ever got sick of it and yelled “Stop moving your fat, hyper fuck!”. I like to think so.

Great stat from ESPN recap on the Cards game last night: Since July 3rd, the Cards are 28-3 when starting either Carpenter, Wainwright, or Pineiro. Crazy.

Bobby was busy thinking about the bottle…

@TST: I have Jose Reyes and B.J. Upton. Needless to say, it’s been a down year for Polonia’s Playhouse.
August 27th, 2009 at 1:35 PM
You have my sympathies.

Among those wins are 12 straight games of allowing 2 or fewer runs by Wainwright, the second longest streak by any Cardinals pitcher in the last 45 years(only John Tudor had a longer streak- 15). Also, Carpenter missed a month and a half at the beginning of the season with an oblique injury. It’s conceivable that, had he not been hurt, he could be going for his 20th win today.
The Cards got some bad news today, though; TBL BFF Colin Cowherd said today that he thinks they can win the World Series. That’s a sure kiss of death, IMO.
