The End to a Busy August
Baseball, College Basketball, Courts, Legal, ESPN, Farting, Mike Vick, NFL, Television, Twitter, Video, WAG August 31st. 2009, 6:00pm
One of the slowest sports months of the year produced plenty of riveting stories: Rick Pitino banged Karen Sypher in a restaurant six years ago and gave her money for “health insurance” (read: an abortion) the Eagles signed Mike Vick , Michael Beasley got a horrible back tattoo and days later checked into rehab, John Calipari had another Final Four scrubbed from the record books, Tim Tebow posed shirtless in GQ, Plaxico Burress got shipped up the river for two years, and Kate Mara appeared on Entourage.
* Sportsnation’s Michelle Beadle once devoured a hot dog on TV.
* We talked to Gameday heartthrob Kirk Herbstreit on our trip to Bristol.
* The Washington Nationals registered a victory over Scott Boras and signed the next Nolan/Koufax/Maddux/Seaver, Stephen Strasburg.
* Adrian Peterson went duck-hunting.
* Tiger Woods farted at the Buick Open.
* We created the ultimate team of WAGS.
* ESPN dropped the social networking hammer.
And that’ll be all for today. Our activity has been sparse this afternoon – we’re preparing for our first fantasy football draft tonight. We’ll drop by in the comments later to hopefully laugh as Favre and his injured ribs struggle against the Texans.

You forgot to mention that the TBL staff finally met and partied together at Flashdancers.
August 31st, 2009 at 6:35 PM
damn you TBL. you have the first pick
August 31st, 2009 at 6:38 PM
its pre season but im still worried about tonight. if they give up 150 yards in the first half to adrian peterson, ill re think my homerism and go back to being a happy to be 8-8 fan
August 31st, 2009 at 6:39 PM
Why is Ralph Kiner on the Yahoo home page?
August 31st, 2009 at 6:40 PM
@TexansFan: The Texans haven’t been around that long, you must have had a team before them anyway.
August 31st, 2009 at 6:40 PM
/fixed?
August 31st, 2009 at 6:49 PM
ill re think my homerism and go back to being a happy to be 8-8 fan
No way man, 8-8 two years in a row sucks. If we don’t make the playoffs this year I won’t be happy. We have an easy schedule and a better team.
August 31st, 2009 at 6:50 PM
ok ok ok. i followed the titans.
August 31st, 2009 at 6:53 PM
yeah when i read cap’s preview of the colts, i thought it was ridiculous. 14-2? the best colts team? come on!
August 31st, 2009 at 6:58 PM
TBL lets go. one minute
August 31st, 2009 at 7:07 PM
so did TBL ever answer whitlock?
August 31st, 2009 at 7:32 PM
did jamarcus russell get drafted 1st?
August 31st, 2009 at 7:37 PM
Had to be Hakeem Nicks, right?
August 31st, 2009 at 7:37 PM
Still no answer to Whitlock? Where is Duffy?
August 31st, 2009 at 7:51 PM
here is what whitlock was doing after he gave tbl the 2 hour deadline. he actually didn’t do too bad.
August 31st, 2009 at 7:54 PM
anyone watch the tool academy?
August 31st, 2009 at 7:59 PM
not totally thrilled with my first FF draft. warner, AP, Portis, Braylon, v jackson, d jackson.
a good team, but not formidable.
August 31st, 2009 at 7:59 PM
re: Tool academy … cousin told me about it yesterday. saw a few seconds … weak.
re: whitlock … answer what?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:02 PM
he wants to know why hes in the honorable mention for thin skinned journalist
August 31st, 2009 at 8:02 PM
He wants to know why he was mentioned in the thin skinned journalist post. He feels his inclusion is unjust.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:03 PM
i dont know the guy but i found it funny he would demand answers. it kinda reaffirms your position that hes thin skinned doesnt it
August 31st, 2009 at 8:06 PM
ok, i’ll go read the comments
been out of the mix for a few hours
August 31st, 2009 at 8:06 PM
tbl go back to your think skinned post and read the comments. whitlock made an appearance.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:07 PM
haha. shit…
August 31st, 2009 at 8:08 PM
Ap 80 yards to the house!
August 31st, 2009 at 8:08 PM
WHAT A HANDOFF BY FAVRE ROCKET ARM
August 31st, 2009 at 8:08 PM
ap is good, and whitlock was joking right
August 31st, 2009 at 8:08 PM
Peterson runs for 80 yards. Boy, that Brett Favre is amazing.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:09 PM
Whitlock, think skinned? never.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:09 PM
You can tell he’s just having fun out there.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:10 PM
So I turned on the game while AP was 20 yards from the end zone. I could have sworn I heard someone say it was a good pass by Favre and somehow Favre had SOMETHING to do with the play.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:11 PM

August 31st, 2009 at 8:12 PM
Adrian Peterson > God
August 31st, 2009 at 8:12 PM
really enjoy Gruden’s commentary haven’t really seen MNF this season until tonight. too bad he’ll probably only be on for 1 year.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:14 PM
how can AP be better than God is Favre is God?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:16 PM
It’s comments by announcers like “plays like that almost make you forget Favre is on the field” that make me hate sports. Peterson is the best in the league at his position. That hasn’t been said about Favre for what, a decade or more if ever? If Magic came out of retirement and played with Lebron, I still think Lebron would get more attention.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:17 PM
Ok I have the first pick in one of my fantasy drafts tomorrow, and would very much appreciate it if the Vikings would get Peterson off the field, and wrap him in bubble wrap and send him back to Minneapolis.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:19 PM
magic never played with the passion and joy that favre does
August 31st, 2009 at 8:19 PM
Nice pocket presence you old bastard.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:20 PM
Favre just got sacked. Held on way too long and MArio Williams is a god among insects. Sidney Rice ran a 4-yard curl route and was wide open to make the catch. Favre missed him.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:20 PM
how many people in the league, lefty?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:21 PM
UUUUUUUM I don’t think you HEARD the announcers clearly say it was a coverage sack and that Favre couldn’t do anything. Because he certainly wasn’t standing in the same spot not looking around or anything. Get out of here with that “he fucked up” stuff. Hater.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:23 PM
drunk dumb redneck
August 31st, 2009 at 8:24 PM
I know it’s not as important as preseason football, but Josh Johnson has no hit the braves through five.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:25 PM
i think the real question is, who would have the audacity to even lay their hands upon favre while a pass play is unfolding. he’s just trying to have fun out there, why ruin it?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:25 PM
i just checked my 24-hour frave cam to see what he looks like on the sideline and guess what? he looks like he is having so much fun even on the sideline! oh my god he loves this game!

10 teams, and then the winner plays the winner of another 10 team league in a Super Bowl of sorts.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:28 PM
So “man cave” has jumped the shark.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:28 PM
how was the slaton fumble not a fumble?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:29 PM
10 teams, first pick isn’t so bad then. hate the first pick in leagues more than 10 teams.
are you using an online site for the “super bowl”, or is this a leagues you’ve been in for years? sounds pretty cool.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:30 PM
That reminds me: what are the chances the NFL has looked into suing people for calling things “the super bowl of…” since Goodell took over?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:30 PM
He never felt like a Jet? So is that why he played them out of the playoffs?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:31 PM
Sidney Rice was open.

Only thanks to the popularity of Bro Hut, the new Scott Baio/Malcolm-Jamaal Warner vehichle set entirely in the house the two jointly purchased thanks to the economy to escape their nagging wives, whiny kids, and dead end jobs.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:31 PM
why does it always look like Gruden is uncomfortable in a shirt and tie?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:32 PM
I really thought I laid the sarcasm on thick enough, I guess not.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:32 PM
lefty – he’s already in Minneapolis
August 31st, 2009 at 8:32 PM
We use Yahoo. It’s only my second year in this particular league, but the guys have been doing it for a while. The only problem I have is that it’s really easy to score points, and it fucks up my barometer of a good week in other leagues.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:34 PM
@moleman: random fact, the only electronics manufacturer licensed to use the term “Super Bowl” is Samsung. everyone else has to use the term “big game”, etc to advertise for football.
not that anyone cares, always thought it was interesting to notice who shelled out big bucks to use Super Bowl in their ads.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:34 PM
I know the preseason doesn’t matter and shit but damn the Texans don’t look good.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:34 PM
General Manager Fail.
I’m sorry. I was thrown off by actually thinking Favre had a fan here. My bad.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:34 PM
you know amobi okoye is just now getting his grown man strength. in about 2-3 years he is going to be an absolute freak
August 31st, 2009 at 8:35 PM
Nice of them to move Reliant Stadium to Minny for the evening.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:35 PM
Simmons will have that job any day now.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:35 PM
i predict shaun rogers will end petersons season in week 1
August 31st, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Fuck this game, three new episodes of The Prisoner just got added to AMC On Demand.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:36 PM
i hate leagues with odd ball scoring. i was in a league once with so many negative scoring categories most guys would only net a handful of points each week.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:36 PM
Somewhere David Kahn is crying
August 31st, 2009 at 8:36 PM
kahn royally screwed his franchise, other franchises, rubio, and fans. he should be tarred and feathered.
why draft someone who is so against playing for you?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:37 PM
Ha, I thought the Vikings were at home, even though I’m watching the Twins play at home. It’s Monday
August 31st, 2009 at 8:37 PM
in about 2-3 years he is going to be an absolute freak
Fuck that he was a top ten pick, it’d be nice if he could collapse the pocket just once.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:37 PM
Oh man this thing has points per reception, points for return yards, and two flex positions. Some people are dumb enough to start WRs in the flex spots. I’m not one of those people.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:38 PM
KAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!

August 31st, 2009 at 8:40 PM
jared allen has some nasty closing speed
August 31st, 2009 at 8:40 PM
It’s ten team so your probably safe, but if it was 12 with two flex spots I doubt you’d have a choice. Only so many usable running backs.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:41 PM
TBL, how could you leave the LSU at Washington game out of your CFB post?
I demand answers, your accountability is at stake!
/Whitlock
August 31st, 2009 at 8:41 PM
i’ve been in really deep leagues, like 16 teams, so most teams had only 3 impact players, 4 if they got lucky, and they had points per reception and shit like that, something like .25 points per, just to give the league a curve. one guy had marvin harrison that year and he got an extra 40 points just bc he had 143 receptions
August 31st, 2009 at 8:42 PM
schaub had about 30 fuckin intentional groundings last year
August 31st, 2009 at 8:43 PM
weird
August 31st, 2009 at 8:43 PM
It’s like Zeus>Cronus
August 31st, 2009 at 8:44 PM
The AP TD aside … this Texans D looks fast. i think the Jets will have trouble moving the ball.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:45 PM
how can AP be better than God is Favre is God?
It’s like Zeus>Cronus
or maybe it’s like God and Jesus are the same person… which means Adrian Peterson is Brett Favre’s son.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:46 PM
So do the copius amounts of cops pulling him over for his DUI’s…
August 31st, 2009 at 8:46 PM
Brandon Marshall was by far the most valuable receiver in our league last year, just due to the amount of catches. I did get lucky for a few weeks due to Felix Jones and his return yards, but once he got hurt, I had already lost Mendenhall, and I was toast. I was trotting out Josh Cribbs in a flex, just to try to get some points.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:47 PM
I’ve the #3 pick on Labor Day. I _really_ hope MoJo drops there.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:48 PM
TBL – Did you explain yourself to Whitlock? Dude posted like 20 times in that thread.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:48 PM
woopdeedoo, andy pettitte has a perfect game through 5, thanks boomer.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:48 PM
wow pettite has a perfect game thru 7. crazy.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:49 PM
He should. You have to figure Peterson then Turner, right?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:49 PM
i think if Whitlock really wanted answers, he would have chosen email. I call BULLSHIT. Its a trap!
/ackbar’d
August 31st, 2009 at 8:49 PM
TBL says that the ways of TBL are mystersious, and that, essentially, other media members said Whitlock couldn’t take criticism.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:51 PM
I only hope someone is dumb enough to take Turner or Forte that high. Otherwise, I’m in the beginnings of shit creek. Don’t know if I want to take a stud WR that high.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:51 PM
ndub – just went over there and posted.
schaub does NOT look like a top 10 QB against this MV D.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:51 PM
i’ve been really high on chris johnson as a solid RB choice all off season. i think people are putting way too much stock in deangelo williams.
/biased, he’s on my keeper team.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:51 PM
Where’s the Super Bowl this year? I need to get my tickets now.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:52 PM
You wouldn’t take Forte 3rd Hawkeye?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:52 PM
I agree with KC Res and the ghost of Nickp. Small sample size!
August 31st, 2009 at 8:53 PM
really bummed that wasn’t a rod at 3rd when i turned on mlb network
August 31st, 2009 at 8:53 PM
hawkeye, what kind of points do you get for passing yards and TDs?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:54 PM
TST, the jinxing of Josh Johnson is much appreciated. Not only is the nono gone, but Infante just tripled in two runs and the Braves lead.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:54 PM
No chance. Look at who the Bears play during fantasy football playoff time.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:55 PM
i really am beginning to think that that isn’t tbl.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:56 PM
6pts per TD, 1 pt/50yrds, 3pt for over 300yrds/game.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:56 PM
/sigh
August 31st, 2009 at 8:56 PM
Well at least the O’s aren’t going to get Perfect-Game’d. That would’ve just made this Monday fucking complete.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:57 PM
Johnson-Forte is tough.
Sked favors Forte.
BUT … Johnson had v similar #’s last year and had many fewer carries and one fewer game i believe.
What does the Cutler factor mean? Depends who you talk to.
Will he throw more because that’s his style?
August 31st, 2009 at 8:57 PM
Whew, and not getting No-Hit either. Thank God for Nick Markakis, I swear we’d have like 6 wins this year without him…and Adam Jones.
August 31st, 2009 at 8:58 PM

August 31st, 2009 at 8:58 PM

August 31st, 2009 at 9:00 PM
TBL, did you read Whitlock’s response?
I think he was hitting refresh every two minutes until you responded.
August 31st, 2009 at 9:01 PM
If not for those two guys, baseball would be unwatchable in the DC metro area. Even with them, it’s borderline. Thankfully, mlb.tv offered a pretty deep late season discount.
August 31st, 2009 at 9:01 PM
This is the first I’ve heard Gruden on color. He is excellent… huge huge HUUUUGE upgrade over Kornheiser. An F- to an A
August 31st, 2009 at 9:04 PM
Pettitte looks really good, though he seemed pretty pissed about that last inning going how it did. He and Jeter might kill Hairston, which I would have no problem with considering how he bitched and moaned his way out of Baltimore.
Mark my words, in two years, the O’s will be very good.
August 31st, 2009 at 9:05 PM
listening to gruden is like listening to a friend who is drinking a beer and watching a game on tv but actually knows what the fuck is going on. yes i know it is cliche to say that but it is true. he has a “i don’t give a damn i’m coaching in a year!” edge to his voice
August 31st, 2009 at 9:12 PM
slaton just bulldozed 3 vikings into the endzone.
August 31st, 2009 at 9:12 PM
I’m glad Schaub was able to demonstrate on national TV why nobody should draft him.
August 31st, 2009 at 9:15 PM
hawkeye, i’d take a flier on a QB with those kind of points. brady, manning, brees would be just as productive as the best RB’s, if not a bit better with that scoring.
August 31st, 2009 at 9:15 PM
I feel confident in guessing that Jennifer’s Body will be the worst movie ever made.
August 31st, 2009 at 9:18 PM

Saw that in the grocery store the other day. A personal fave. Played in a coed flag football league a couple of years ago, and we got tickets for free Sam Adam’s Octoberfest at a local sports bar after every game. Helped take the sting out of losing every week.

I had to quit doing that. I couldn’t resist doing stupid shit like banging the Jackets laying 4 to Climpson on the road, which inevitably ended in failure.
August 31st, 2009 at 9:42 PM

One of the two reasons I’m not a real man. I can’t take gambling on sports. I can’t take the pressure.
The other is that I can’t drink whiskey or bourbon.
I’m sure there are more, actually, but those are the primary two.

that’s a good collection of RB’s, if westbrook stays healthy and lynch isn’t sitting on his ass during his suspension you should be a very strong team come week 4. jones is going to be very good this season.
