FIFA recognizes more countries than the United Nations
That’s because there aren’t little things like “human rights records” that FIFA looks at when considering members. UN membership is and should be more difficult.
Also, Iran is recognized by the UN.

Touche. The point remains though, FIFA and UN membership are not exactly similar. The way FIFA recognizes teams is a bit different: for example there is no British National Team, there are English, Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Ireland teams. But none of those are ‘independent countries’ that would be recognized as such by the UN.
