Pete Carroll’s More Impressed With Jake Locker Than Terrelle Pryor
1-liner, Baseball, College Football September 15th. 2009, 11:00am
Pete Carroll: He’s more impressed with Washington QB Jake Locker than Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor. Of course, this could have something to do with the Trojans playing the Huskies this week. If you’re unfamiliar with Locker, he’s a tremendous athlete – a heralded high school athlete, Locker was recently drafted in the 10th round of the MLB draft by the Anaheim Angels and signed a deal – and we wouldn’t be surprised if he kept the Huskies in the game Saturday. USC, after winning at Ohio State, is a heavy road favorite. [Twitter]

im taking those points
September 15th, 2009 at 11:04 AM
Locker at baseball > Locker at football.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:04 AM
Also from her twitter:
Pete Carroll on how loud Ohio Stadium was: “Tech [Virginia Tech in '04 at Fed-Ex Field] was louder, but maybe I can’t hear as good now.”
That was a neutral site game FYI, take that Spencer.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:05 AM
If he signed a deal shouldn’t that make him ineligible to play college football?
September 15th, 2009 at 11:05 AM
So is the annual “we don’t give a fuck about the Pac-10 bottomfeeders” loss for USC, or is it too early in the season?
September 15th, 2009 at 11:05 AM
was recently drafted in the 10th round of the MLB draft by the Anaheim Angels and signed a deal
How does this not invalidate his eligibility? There was a big deal made last year about the Florida State player getting to use a charter jet so he could make it to Maryland on time to play in the second half of the Maryland-Florida State game after his Rhodes Scholar interview…but the fact that a current player now has a professional baseball contract is ok? I’m back to square one on understanding NCAA eligibility requirements.

so am i.
thus far from what i have seen, pryor is a fantastically talented one-trick pony (easy spencer).
until pryor becomes a serious threat to burn you with a pass, he’ll be a one-trick pony.
(before spencer gets worked up, i have to remind him i am not nor ever have been anti-ohio state., although i am very much anti-michigan, anti-nba and anti-golf; the latter two resulted in feeling the brunt of spencer’s wrath.)
September 15th, 2009 at 11:06 AM
I was thinking the same thing Maggs
September 15th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
Thats what I hear. He needs to get the guaranteed cash and extend his life for 20 years by playing baseball.
Locker has shitty receivers too. I watched the LSU game his WRs were dropping everything.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
It only makes hims ineligible for a football scholarship
September 15th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
Happens all the time with baseball and football. Chris Weinke and Quincy Carter come to mind.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
you’re a smarter man than I if you ever got to square two.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
I believe it will forfeit his chances to play NCAA baseball not football. It was like when Tom Zbikowski earned money from boxing while at Notre Dame a few years ago.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:10 AM
Terrelle Pryor looks like he doesnt give a fuck when he plays.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
Not sure the “no professionals allowed” thing applies if the athlete plays a different sport than the one they are currently playing collegiately. I would imagine that Jake Locker couldn’t play college baseball anymore as a result of his signing.
I do remember that Ricky Williams was in the Phils minor league system while at UT and the subject of his eligibility never came up.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:12 AM
Chris Weinke and Quincy Carter come to mind.
Chris Weinke played for a number of years in the minors and then moved into college football. To my knowledge, he did not have a contract while he played college football.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:12 AM
I think it has to do with whether or not he actually plays and gets paid. He can sign all the contracts he wants, but as long as he doesn’t get paid as a professional, he can come back and play football.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:13 AM
I’m back to square one on understanding NCAA eligibility requirements.

shut the fuck up bo…this is just wrong.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:14 AM
Not sure the “no professionals allowed” thing applies if the athlete plays a different sport than the one they are currently playing collegiately.
But what about the Jeremy Bloom situation at Colorado a few years ago? I don’t recall all of the facts, but I seem to recall the NCAA saying he was ineligible at first because he had been a professional skier with endorsements and he still had some of those endorsement deals when he made the Colorado football team.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:15 AM
Spence- Im sorry but he looks like hes just out there with no heart.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:16 AM
If you had to mire through that offense you would be too.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:16 AM
correct.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:16 AM
From the linked article:
Locker’s situation is similar to that of former Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon, who was drafted in the fifth round by the Braves in 2007. Dixon was reported to have received a $150,000 signing bonus and it’s thought that Locker may have been seeking something similar. The deal would also have to be enough to pay for Locker’s final two years of tuition at UW. By signing, he maintains his eligibility in football but he has to pay his own way and officially be termed a walk-on, opening up a scholarship for the Huskies.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:18 AM
Yea but remember the Jeremy Bloom shit? He was declared ineligible because he got endorsement $$ for his skiing career.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:18 AM
From the linked article:
[looks around sheepishly]. Yes I suppose I could have looked at the linked story.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:20 AM
dumbest thing ever tweetered.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:20 AM
An endorsement is different than a playing contract, according to the NCAA anyway. Cedric Benson was with the Dodgers organization while at Texas.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:21 AM
i dunno what games you’re watching. i really don’t.
you, of all people, should sympathize. when was the last time VT had an offense worth a shit?
September 15th, 2009 at 11:22 AM
The Jeremy Bloom thing, if I remember it correctly, he could have got $$ for the events, but the endorsement money was what got him ineligible. Then, he tried to argue that endorsement money in skiing was the method of salary, which would be comparable to a football player remaining eligible with a baseball signing bonus.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:24 AM
That was me being sympathetic.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Having been to both stadiums I can say with 100% certainty that it simply isn’t physically possible.
USC players have been signing pro contracts for years and still played, ask Reggie.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Touche.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Ive seen the loss to Penn State last year, The lucky win against the Navy and the Loss against USC. The USC game he actually looked like he had a pulse.

//Hey-O!!
September 15th, 2009 at 11:27 AM
USC players have been signing pro contracts for years and still played, ask Reggie.
Don’t ask the NCAA though because they have no knowledge of any such transaction. They’re too busy waiting for some Div II Women’s Field Hockey team to fuck up so they can nail them.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:29 AM
I 100% agree there is no way we were louder at a neutral site game which is where ‘04 VT-USC took place. As for Lane Stadium versus the Shoe, I would say it is entirely possible. Lane has ~66K versus ~100K for tOSU. However, that doesn’t impress me much. I went to Georgia-Tenn and it was like a 100K person funeral. Lane was designed and engineered to capture and bottle noise on the field. At a lot of huge stadiums the sound waves bounce off the field and escape the stadium.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:29 AM
They’re too busy waiting for some Div II Women’s Field Hockey team to fuck up so they can nail them.
I’d also like to nail a women’s field hockey team
September 15th, 2009 at 11:29 AM
or a CUSA women’s golf team.
/how Memphis bball got caught
September 15th, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Then, he tried to argue that endorsement money in skiing was the method of salary,
It is and he was right and the NCAA fucked him.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:31 AM
Then why the fuck couldn’t Drew Henson finish up his career at UofM? I have no idea wtf is going on. Have the school buy your family a house? Good. Practice too much (allegedly)? Bad.
/NCAA rules is fucked, yo
September 15th, 2009 at 11:32 AM
you mean the PSU game where he was crying on the sideline after fumbling?
yea…he doesn’t care. not at all.
or the navy game where he’s running around and jumping into dane sanzenbacher’s arms after the TD? yep…doesn’t give a shit.
don’t be an idiot.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:33 AM
/NCAA rules is fucked, yo
Truer words are rarely spoken. They enforce the rules when it suits them. But if it means hurting their financial bottom line by, say, taking down a big money football program, they back off and take away a couple of scholarships for a year.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:34 AM
I’ve been to all of the Big TelEveN stadiums, the Fiesta Bowl, Tennessee, U of Washington, FSU, Orange Bowl, and Sugar Bowl. PSU, Tenn, tOSU, and Washington are as loud at it can get. Washington, even though much smaller, amazed me when I went to the tOSU game there a couple of years ago. The roof overhangs make 72,000 fans sound like 150,000. Amazing place for a game if the crowd is into it.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:35 AM
Field hockey chicks are far and away the hottest college female athletes, its not even up for discussion.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:35 AM
you mean the PSU game where he was crying on the sideline after fumbling?
i love that story
September 15th, 2009 at 11:36 AM
IIRC, Henson chose to play with the Yankees full time. By the time he flamed out with New York, his college eligibility had exhausted.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:37 AM
Someone hasn’t watched him play this year. If there’s one thing Steve Sarkisian has proven it’s that he can turn talented QBs into first round picks. Locker is no exception. Les Miles called him a first round pick after the LSU game, and a couple draft guys think that come next year he’ll be the top QB prospect period.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:37 AM
Volleyball, for those of us not into freckles.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:37 AM
@ Bo
Regarding pryor. I have thought the same thing watching pryor last year and this year. Much of the time he just looks like he doesn’t really care that much when he is playing. I asked a friend who is an OSU homer and he said that Pryor is not the most intelligent guy and the world and maybe that is why he comes across as bored when he is playing football.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:39 AM
no way. volleyball.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:40 AM
Locker is a beast. If he played for a team that didn’t suck balls for the past couple of years he would be a national name. I think he is better than Tebow physically, but no one touches Jesus when it comes to leadership.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:40 AM
when i was in school, it went field hockey, then tennis. volleyball was hit or miss.

Hot volleyball chicks rule. Legs for miles.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:42 AM
Right. Not sure about Weinke, but I know Carter didn’t start his eligibility clock until after he washed out as a baseball player. I think Henson went to school, then played baseball. The eligibility clock runs non-stop for four years once you start it.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:42 AM

i don’t know. jesus had 12 apostles, and even with Judas betraying him had 11. Tebow only has 10 other guys on offense.

well that settles it…a second hand account and the opinion of a michigan fan trump factual evidence of him showing enthusiasm and giving a shit.

spence gets a pass, its been a bad weekend for football in the great lakes region.
Of course there are hot volleyball players, but on the average, field hockey is vastly superior. I did campus security for a year or so at PSU and we had to work all these events, the entire North Carolina field hockey team was unreal hot.
September 15th, 2009 at 11:58 AM

in regards to all the amatuer status stuff, he can be paid for playing another sport professionally. Bloom was ok when he was taking prize money, the problem became when he was taking endorsements for skiing. as long as he doesnt get paid for football or take endorsements, he is ok to get oaid for baseball

Why should one even consider being impressed with Pryor as a quarterback anymore? As an athlete yes, but as a quarterback like I posted months ago on here, FUCK NO! Now quit homo’ing him TBL!
