The Ultimate Fighter 10 Premier/Ultimate Fight Night Preview
UFC September 16th. 2009, 4:45pm
I’m sure you’ve heard by now that tonight is a big night for free, televised mixed martial arts. You do like MMA, don’t you? Of course you do! Because you want your friends to think you’re cool. You’re not a square, are you? Here, let me light that cigarette for you.
Tonight marks a 3-hour block of UFC programming on SpikeTV that will make your head spin. (Maybe!) First, at 9pm, there’s UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs. Guillard. Then as soon as that ends, it’s the premiere of The Ultimate Fighter 10 featuring Kimbo Slice and a bunch of really big people. First things first…
UFN 19 Preview
This is a pretty good lineup to be packed into a 2 hour block for free. There aren’t any huge names or immediate title implications, but its a bunch of guys that I’m going to enjoy beating the shit out of each other.
Nate Quarry vs Tim Crueder – “Rock” Quarry is a former title contender that is so terrifying that Kalib Starnes – a professional fighter – once spent 15 straight minutes running away from him. He’ll be taking on TUF 7 alum Tim Crueder who is 3-0 in the UFC. This should be fight of the night. I think Quarry wins a close decision tonight and continues his climb back towards the top.
Carlos Condit vs Jake Ellenberger – Condit was the 4 time WEC welterweight champion until his weight class was dissolved. He’s coming off a split-decision loss in his UFC debut to future title contender, Martin Kampmann. I got to see Ellenberger’s last fight (Bellator XI) when he served Marcelo Alfaia a delicious knockout 42 seconds into the fight. The UFC isn’t doing him any favors giving him Condit for his UFC debut. I’m taking Condit by submission.
Gray Maynard vs Roger Huerta – This is Roger Huerta’s swan song in the UFC. After this, he’s leaving to make movies. “El Matador” hasn’t fought since his loss to Kenny Florian over a year ago. Nobody is a fan of this decision. Thus, Joe Silva and Dana White are throwing Huerta into the cage with undefeated Gray Maynard, possibly hoping he maims him beyond recognition. If not for Huerta bolting after the fight, this would be the headliner with title implications. (Yes, that’s Huerta on the cover of SI up there.) I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that Huerta leaves on top. Unless he hasn’t been training. Boy, I hope he’s been training.
Nate Diaz vs Melvin Guillard – It’s not often that a guy coming off two losses headlines a card. Yet, here is Nate Diaz facing a black man with very colorful hair. Though, to be fair, his last two fights were decision losses to top contenders that garnered FOTN honors. Guillard has won two straight since returning to the UFC. Diaz by submission late.
The rest of the card also features… WEC LHW title fight rematch between Steve Cantwell and Brian Stann…. C.B. Dollaway will take on UFC newcomer, Jay Silva…. Rising star/monster Brock Larson versus UFC newcomer Mike Pierce… TUF 8’s Phillipe Norver takes on Sam Stout… Other fights I don’t care to list…
Update: The Norver – Stout fight has been canceled. Phillepe Norver had a seizure in the locker room this afternoon. He’s OK and hopefully there won’t be any recurring issues.

TUF 10: Heavyweights
It’s finally here – Kimbo Slice versus THE WORLD. This is the first ever season to feature just Heavyweights. That should make it the most boring ever! Wait, what?

I’m kidding. This season never would have worked 3 years ago. The idea of finding someone new for Tim Sylvia to lean on just didn’t do it for me. Now though, these guys are real athletes. It’s a whole new world. The season features “4″ former NFL players – Marcus Jones, Matt Mitrione, Wes Shivers and Brendan Schaub. (He was on the Bills’ practice squad. And he played in the AFL.)
Before I move on, yes, the picture linked under “real athletes” was to a contestant. Roy Nelson to be exact. You may recognize him as the guy that was lying on top of Andrei Arlovski at an EliteXC event last summer. Remember that?
Speaking of EliteXC, it’s Kimbo Slice! Remember when he killed EXC by getting KO’d by the guy with the pink hair? Well, I got to meet and speak briefly with Mr. Slice on Friday (seriously) and it was only mildly jarring. (I just switched back to solid foods!)
In addition to Kimbo Slice, the new season will also feature former UFC title Light Heavyweight champions Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson yelling at each other. A lot. By the end of the season you’ll be so excited to see them finally fight. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait because Rampage is filming the fucking A-Team movie. I’m sure it’ll be worth it and will turn out to be a really good film. Fer cereal.
It doesn’t matter. They’ll argue and it will be entertaining because Rampage is a pretty funny guy. Everyone will want to kill Kimbo at first and then warm up to him because he’s a decent person. Some people will get knocked the fug out. Good times all around. Tune in. You do want to be cool, right!?

Heavyweights other than the elite so far have been either a KO, or the most boring fights ever. These guys will benefit from the 2 round style of TUF, and any fight that goes to the 3rd we’ll want to be over long before that because they will be gassed early-mid 2nd round. Hope I’m wrong.
On the other hand, UFN 19, something I don’t have to steal and looks awesome. How many televised fights?
September 16th, 2009 at 4:54 PM
Nice job, CRM. It just needs more Arianny.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:58 PM
Maynard will beat Huerta FWIW.
4 televised fights maiter2
September 16th, 2009 at 4:59 PM
Thanks, this also gives me the chance to DVR the ultimate 100 fights, is that worth watching or way to much talk and not enough punch?
September 16th, 2009 at 5:03 PM
I know one of the fighters that will be on this season’s TUF show. So I’m excited to see how he does.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:04 PM
fucking a i wish they would have made the heavyweights fight to get into the house but supposedly they didnt have enough time to tryout enough heavyweights for that to happen because it was originally supposed to be lhw and hw but when they found out kimbo was gonna be on they decided to make it all heavyweight . if you believe they couldnt get enough heavyweights to make the fighters fight for the chance to be in the house i have 2009 cleveland cavs eastern conference championship hat to sell you. they just wanted to have kimbo on the show for as long as possible. i hope he gets his head beat in

Ultimate 100 is worth watching all the way through once. Lots of omissions and fights that should be higher/lower, but there’s a lot of good stuff in there.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:08 PM
Spencer and Nick need your paypal account.
That being said, you’re totally right and everyone knows it. Gotta keep those ratings up.
/adds picture of Roger Huerta wearing a hat to post

CRM, what is the over/under on the number of fights that Kimbo lasts… 1.5? For some reason Dana White will have him get “injured” so he doesn’t have to fight in the first round. Book it.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:14 PM
Also, I like him. Talk about maximizing your exposure. It’s all about survival boys.
/See Heidi and Spencer

Nice, I hate Spike TV rebroadcasts of anything because they are one of the worst with commercials, but with DVR, the ultimate 100 will be great. I’m not a long-time fan, only about 3 years or so, so most of these fights are new to me I hope. I just moved to Cali, so I’m in the heart of the UFC it seems, a gym in every strip mall. Any good places to catch fights out here other than Vegas? It’s the one sport the woman enjoys along with me, other than PSU football.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:16 PM
mamalick: and he will get the guy who has about as much experience fighting in the cage as i do. he will make the finals. by hook or crook he will make the finals/ book it
September 16th, 2009 at 5:19 PM
I wonder how Wes Sims will do. The guy’s a character, but he’s very awkward when fighting.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:24 PM
Wes Sims could/should be a finals contender. His length poses such a problem ie Tim Sylvia(no talent yet still UFC HW Champ)
September 16th, 2009 at 5:25 PM
Have you seen Wes Sims fight before?
September 16th, 2009 at 5:25 PM
TUESDAY BLIND ITEM: i’ve helped “escort” out of my bar one of the guys in the team photo for dropping a female bartender whilst roid raging. he’s also had the pleasure of being stunned gunned by police at two other local watering calls during brawls.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:27 PM
or watering holes…
September 16th, 2009 at 5:41 PM
Have you seen Wes Sims fight before?
Yes I certainly have, you don’t recall him fighting Mir twice and even Big Timmy himself. All with little techical trainer ie at the time he was with Team Hammerhouse(Coleman/Randleman/Baroni)
September 16th, 2009 at 5:47 PM
All I know is, Sims will make it interesting…
/Holy shit, just saw the video of Mir snapping Sylvia’s arm. Wow that was unpleasant.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:50 PM
@RexKramer – Wes Sims?
September 16th, 2009 at 6:03 PM
so you’re kinda new to this sport huh?
September 16th, 2009 at 6:05 PM
It’s a good list if you don’t remember that Tito and Frank Shamrock actually won fights.
/Dana’s a douche
September 16th, 2009 at 6:09 PM
It’s too bad Tito never beat anybody eh clown?
September 16th, 2009 at 6:13 PM
Yeah, he only defended his UFC belt five times – only one time by decision. What a bum.
September 16th, 2009 at 6:17 PM
Against whom though is my point. Gonna be real hard to make yourself look decent on that. Maybe they could show the Randy or Chuck fights oh wait…
September 16th, 2009 at 6:18 PM
I mean I know Elvis Sinosic is a real gamer…
September 16th, 2009 at 6:27 PM
Should have rephrased. No I’m not new to the sport, far from it. I meant to say, I’ve seen the video many times and it doesn’t get any less gruesome. Never gets old.
September 16th, 2009 at 6:28 PM
You win. Tito Ortiz beating Wanderlei Silva for the belt probably isn’t even in the top 500 UFC fights of all time, let alone top 100. Good debate, Dana.
September 16th, 2009 at 6:37 PM
Oddly enough look at Wanderlei pre Pride and now post Pride…nothing else? Didn’t thing so. The Tito fans are too funny and so easily prodded like cattle.
The Wanderlei in that succession is the only legit title fight. Not even arguable.
Good debate, noob.
September 16th, 2009 at 7:27 PM
Early results…
CD Dollaway over Silva(Jay)
Jeremey Stephens over Jason Buchholz
Mike Pierce over Brock Larson
Ryan Jensen over Steve Steinbiess
Bulldog over Clown, no contest
September 16th, 2009 at 7:51 PM
I don’t even like Tito, but you’re right – I would never win an argument with one of the Dana sheeple.
September 16th, 2009 at 7:55 PM
Not real sure how I am Dana sheeple other than that is “hip” to say when one has nothing relevant to say.
I enjoy most all MMA, regardless of it’s brand.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:12 PM
They need to redo the entire list with all the egregious omissions. They should have treated it like a historical document that they update every year as new fights crack the top 100. Like a UFC almanac.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:34 PM
Like a Mount Rushmore of UFC Fights?
September 16th, 2009 at 9:13 PM
You owe Simmons a nickle.
