Let’s Temper the Lane Kiffin Love, Folks
1-liner, College Football September 21st. 2009, 10:00am
Florida-Tennessee: The Gators were leading 23-6 in the 4th quarter, with the game in hand. Tim Tebow, running inside the 10-yard line, uncharacteristically fumbled. There were eight minutes left in the game; it should have been 30-6. But because of his rare fumble, UT marched down and scored, and all of a sudden the 23-13 final looks misleading. Yes, Kiffin’s ball-control attack was impressive; more surprising was how the Gators’ defense never really adjusted and the Vols’ moved the ball well enough to eat clock and slow the game. Unfortunately, Ole Miss doesn’t run that well. Alabama does, though. [Yahoo, Orlando Sentinel]

I did not watch much of the game, but I do agree with Andy Staples at SI that this felt like a UT win of sorts. As for FLA, the loss of Percy Harvin is going to be felt all year. It’s a good thing they haev a sick defense because the Gator offense is not all that special right now. Oh, and Eric Berry is a beast.

what time’s the next college football post? I’m through with this one!

Tennessee was as good as Florida at every position on the field except for the most important one. God Crompton is terrible.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:12 AM
Tebow looked like shit all game long. No chance he ever has success as an NFL QB. The Gators’ LBs and D-line (even Spikes at times) were completely dominated. Bama will run all over Urban’s boys this year.
Eric Berry continues to impress. He’s a monster.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:14 AM
The Tebow slobbing during the game was unbearable. I doubt I’ll watch another Florida game this year until bowl season.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:14 AM
berry doesnt wear gloves. thats old school.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:17 AM
thats when it gets especially bad though
September 21st, 2009 at 10:18 AM
I think the reason that a lot of college football fans are sick of the Tebow hyperbole was exemplified in his collision with Eric Berry. Tebow, who has 30 lbs on Berry, was running full speed while Berry was shedding a block and pursuing at an angle. Tebow knocks him back and the announcers go nuts talking about how great Tebow his and mighty his thick, veiny cock is. He SHOULD have knocked the smaller player back, and Berry stopped him right there from gaining any more yardage, which if I’m not mistaken, was his job.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:20 AM
One thing’s for sure. No one is impressive this year in CFB. We could have another craptastic BSC champion like a 2 loss LSU.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:21 AM
if you ask florida if they would take giving up 13 to tenn i think they take it. not sure what you wanted their d to do.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:21 AM
agree w/ clown. coming into this week tex and UF were supposedly the best teams by far. both looked ordinary.
best part would be if a lot of folks have 1 loss and boise state and houston are unbeaten.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:25 AM
So we should temper the Lane Kiffin love, when they lost by 10, and only gave up 23 points, and the expectations were that they’d at best get blown out, and possibly give up 50 points, and maybe even Florida would try to get to triple digits. Got it. Will the upcoming Jets post advise us to temper the love for the cagey scenester?
September 21st, 2009 at 10:26 AM
Folks, the Gator’s gameplan this week called for them to look like doo-doo because they knew USC would lose and Texas Tech would throw all over Texas while making McCoy look ordinary…
September 21st, 2009 at 10:27 AM
you mean boise state that gave up 3 – 60+ yard td runs to Fresno? you mean Boise who will have 1 win against a decent team (oregon) this year?
September 21st, 2009 at 10:27 AM
why did oklahoma jump osu in both rankings?
September 21st, 2009 at 10:28 AM
In all seriousness, I predicted the score to be 27-6 Florida, the media made this blow out up, and I think th emajority of Florida fans expected a much closer game than the media wanted…

Is this the “Pete Carroll = fraud” post, or will that come later this afternoon?
September 21st, 2009 at 10:29 AM
Bama is pretty impressive and if they were in any other conference they woudl be a lock to go undefeated. Bama beats the gators this year by running it right down their throats.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:30 AM
I think Houston will lose to Texas Tech
September 21st, 2009 at 10:30 AM

Its got a 2007 smell to it this year. Said it yesterday but UT/OU/Fla are nowhere near as explosive on offense, average teams. PSU/Ole Miss are frauds. Cal/Mia/Bama have looked good but I could see any of them rolling off 3 straight losses.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:40 AM

I counted three separate instances in the 15-20 minutes I watched this game where they replayed the footage of him screaming at his o-linemen during a timeout. I’m pretty sure the CBS crew rubbed one out to that.

BINGO!! This season sucks so far. My Huskers take a shot to the nuts after blowing a game in which they dominated, so maybe I’m just pissed, but this season is kind of meh. Florida looks average for a team that was supposed to be great and USC looks even worse. Texas looks like it will miss Quan Cosby a ton. I think Bama may be the best team in the country right now, and I’m totally serious.
September 21st, 2009 at 10:56 AM
I think once Florida recovers from the losses at receiver we’ll be fine…The last 4 weeks we’ve lost 3 starters to injuries…

September 21st, 2009 at 11:07 AM
As of now (an it is WAY early), Miami looks like a BCS team, Bama looks like one, Texas, by default looks like one as does Florida (by default of their vag-tastic schedule). Other than that it is a toss up. Cincy looks good though, so maybe I should add them in the mix too. I’m not sold on Cal. Penn State hasn’t played a team with a pulse yet, so until I see more from them I will just assume Ohio State will take the Big 10 this year. USC looks like dogshit on offense. Why they didn’t run the ball 60 times I’ll never understand. BYU had a chance, and then they were shit-housed against Free Shoe. Ole Miss is the #4 team in the country, yet no one thinks they are any good. How is a voter supposed to choose a top-10 right now? It is Fla, Tex, Bama and then….Cal? Ole Miss? Penn State? Get the fuck out of here if you know how good any of those teams really are. WE NEED A PLAYOFF DAMMIT!
September 21st, 2009 at 11:09 AM

yep…not kidding, either.

September 21st, 2009 at 11:10 AM
What has Penn State done to warrant being in the same breath as FLA, TEX or Bama?
September 21st, 2009 at 11:11 AM
We’ll know a lot more after this Saturday.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:12 AM
Its always a road game, and Illinois is capable of having a big game (I’ve got tix and can’t wait to party it up Champaign style), Michigan always gives PSU issues. Even though its at home, OSU’s DLine may be too much for them. I’d say they lose at least 1 of those 3.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:12 AM
penn state is still a tier or two above bama. bama was mediocre for way too long.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:15 AM
this is such bullshit. I can play the what if game too: if Tennessee hadn’t thrown twice (at 2nd and goal and 3rd and goal) from the UF 3 yard line earlier in the game, then the last Tennessee drive at the end of the game is for the tying touchdown and go-ahead point after.
yes, Crompton is a sack of poo. I hope Kiffin reinforced/learned from this game that the offensive game plan should consist of 3 strategies: 1) hand off to Hardesty and Brown, 2) throw occasional screen passes, 3) take a knee to get the Defense back on the field.

All of the teams suck. What has Bama done? Won a squeaker against VT in a defacto home game? We all saw this weekend how shitty the Hokies are.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:17 AM
You could be right. Brian Kelly is a hell of a coach.
It’s showtime for Cal. Oregon has no business winning this game, so it will be interesting to see what Cal team shows up. Though I will say that Javid Best is my #1 Heisman candidate at the moment with Jacory Harris right behind him. Tebow and McCoy have looked rusty so they move down.

I think the ACC is better. Free Shoe, Miami and VT are solid team. The ACC has Ohio State and Penn State (who is fraudulant) and maybe Michigan State. Both leagues have some shit teams at the bottom (UVA/Duke/Maryland are just awful), but UNC, GT and Clemson are solid middle-tier teams. Iowa is not all that great due to some tough injuries, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue and Northwestern are garbage. I would take the ACC, but the Big 10 is not far behind.

September 21st, 2009 at 11:37 AM
Free Shoe should have lost to Jax state. So far Miami has two nice wins, but they were against criminally overrated ACC garbage. VT got dominated by Bama and should have lost to Neb.
Even with the flaws of the B10, thats not impressive.

I think that all of the leagues are down this year. The Pac 10 is led by USC and Cal. Oregon is not that great and the same can be said for Arizona, UCLA and ASU. Washington is much better, but that does not say a lot. Stanford is definitly better. The Big 12 has Kansas, Mizzou and Neb as a troika of good-but-nothing-special teams while Tex and OU own the South. OK St is the fraud that we all thought while Baylor still isn’t there and Texas Tech is down. UGA, LSU and ARK are okay teams. Ole Miss is an unknown. I think the major conference are just okay ths year. It’s wierd.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:40 AM
Because Spencer…just because.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:41 AM
Miz: Thank you. I was posting to make that same point. This game was really competitive and close throughout. It started to look like it could go the way of the blowout after Florida went up 23-6, but then the UT d stepped up, again, and got the ball from Tebow, again. This defense is so for real it’s not even funny. Our offense is obviously completely awful, aside from our running game, so that will hold us back all year. Crompton remains the worst SEC QB I have ever watched in my lifetime. Luckily he plays for my team.
Also, you guys know Florida doesn’t play Bama this year right? I mean, SEC championship, maybe, but they aren’t on the schedule. Also, I think UF loses at least 1 SEC game, if not two regular season games.

Spartans are amongst the most bitter crowds with a huge chip on their lame downtrodden shoulders due to their in-state rival of snoots getting always more of the attention. They are bitter in victory or defeat all the same and just plain assholes.

The headline on that commentary from the Orlando Sentinel got changed from “Meyer and Tebow let down Gator Nation” (Saturday night) to “Gators win but Kiffin’s still laughing” (Sunday). Wonder why?
September 21st, 2009 at 4:47 PM
No Florida fan is satisfied with this win. Sure, it’s a victory and the solace Gator Nation is feeling is all wrapped in, “Well, we got the victory and that’s the most important thing.” But the reality is Florida wanted a Georgia 2008 win … only worse. They wanted blood and left with unsatisfied.
For Tennessee, though, this was a HUGE game. Lane Kiffin can go into recruits’ homes and say, “Florida wanted nothing more than to utterly demolish us … and we were in it in the fourth quarter. They had every incentive to annihilate us. We took their absolute best shot … and we were a couple of breaks away from winning. We are one or two players away from being one of the best teams in the country … and you’re one of those players. Come to Tennessee and be part of something special.” Yeah … this was a much bigger game for Tennessee long-term than it was for Florida.
