Of Course Dallas is Sticking by Tony Romo. What Other Options Do They Have?
1-liner, NFL September 23rd. 2009, 10:45amTony Romo: Apparently, he’s getting destroyed in Dallas after his three-INT debacle against the Giants, who came into the season with supposedly the best defense in the league. Here’s what is great about the NFL – if Lawrence Tynes misses the FG at the end, or the Cowboys secondary ever grasps how to defend in the 2-minute drill, Romo’s an afterthought. Instead, his flaws are highlighted. The guess here is he won’t struggle again until November, when Dallas plays Philly. That being said … if he isn’t able to rebound, there’s no Terrell Owens to blame, and there’s no Jessica Simpson to blame. But what other options does Dallas have? His backup is Jon Kitna, who excels at fumbling and throwing interceptions. [Dallas Morning News]

and if the giants offense did better converting on the red zone opportunity…and if justin tuck doesn’t get tripped…if lawrence tynes never misses the 29 yarder early in the 2nd half…if the giants corners held contain…
why do you always play the stupid if game?
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:51 AM
shock…romo sucks.
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:52 AM
@YYSA: he’s been dead man walking for how many seasons now? Surprised there’s not more outcry for him to be fired.
September 23rd, 2009 at 10:55 AM
Is it true he was trying to “Noonan” Tynes on the game winning field goal? Thats the guy I want leading my football team right there.

romo excels at the same exact things.. kitna wants to see what it was like to be overrated and put in television adds even though you’re overrated and havent accomplished anything

Just about every sporting result that was somewhat close could be dissected with the “if” game. But Romo’s a celebrity and he seems like a nice guy, so…

I’m done defending Antonio. I would trade him for Derek Anderson yesterday. Bring in Jeff Garcia after he’s waived. FML.

The Cowboys were an 8-8 team to start the season… they are 1-1. what’s the problem?
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:00 AM
Let’s see:
2006 Drops the hold on a Kick to lose a playoff game
2007 Loses at home to a division rival in the playoffs while spending the second half of the game on the run missing his receivers, pics show up with him on Vacation a week before the game
2008 Team has epic collapse highlighted by his turnovers and in fighting with his star wide receiver
2009 3 turnovers in the home opener against a major division rival while opening the owners new self-indulgent palace
The guy has done nothing. He is a mistake prone QB who is not Brett Favre in his prime good to overcome it. The guy has done nothing to warrant any sort of good will. If he was the QB of the Chiefs no one would give a rats fuck about him.

Not to be too critical of your thought process, but this whole lets ignore the biggest plays of the game way of looking at how people play is ridiculous. that is where games are won and lost. He threw 3 picks so they lost. Tynes made the fg. Its what actually happens that counts. He doesnt throw those picks they win. It is a simple as that. The whole take away the big carries in a game for a running back is ridiculous too. Did Gore really have a bad week last week because if you take away his big two big carries because he only averaged 3.5 a carry on the rest?
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:02 AM
It’s all my fault, I drafted him in fantasy
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:03 AM
Ted Ginn demands you throw the Dolphins defense under the bus immediately. Fair is fair. If is if.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:03 AM
All right Romo sucks and all but he really had 2 picks in that game. The ball bouncing in the air after Witten backward kicks it, come on now, that was the flukiest fluke that ever fluked.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:05 AM
at least Romo endorses Starter

+1 wilhelm. I lol’d for real on that one
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:06 AM
TBL’s boy Colin Cowherd had a pretty good point Monday – Maybe he’s just not that good. No major college program wanted anything to do with him. No NFL team wanted to draft him. That’s, like, a pattern and stuff. Nobody would give a shit about him if he was a 49er or a Ram.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:07 AM
Except that the ball was 2 yards behind the receiver, if he throws even a half decent pass there’s no pick, so it is his fault.

the fg at the end wouldn’t be necessary if they made the 29 yarder from earlier.

that was a terrible pass. Nearly four feet behind a guy running across the field, open. high school qb’s don’t miss that badly
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:08 AM
Yeah, that pick off Witten’s foot was flukey. That leaves him with 2 picks.
/never really thought about Romo before
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:08 AM
I agree for the most part, but Kurt Warner fits a lot of the criteria you just laid out.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:10 AM
the two DTs on the other team had their best games as pros ever
/Butch Davis’d
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:10 AM
That was if Romo’s fluke field goal hold had met with that Phil Dawson field goal kick against the ravens, and they had a kid. Then meanwhile, that Denver fluke win last week had met with the music city miracle and they had a kid. Then by some off chance those two kids met and then fuuuucked. That catch off his shoe would have been their spawn.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:10 AM
So Romo is a below average QB who if surrounded with insanely talented players could probably have 2 or 3 great years. Hmm, sounds about right.
/Warner isn’t a HOF’er

a): mentioning Cowherd in a positive light
b): using his logic to make a good point

isn’t all forgiven? I thought TBL and Cowherd were boys now. They even hung out when TBL went to Bristol. And by hung out I mean boned.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:17 AM
because the Giants had the number 1 pick in waiting to play. they only signed warner to keep the seat warm for a few games anyway.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:18 AM
isn’t all forgiven? I thought TBL and Cowherd were boys now. They even hung out when TBL went to Bristol. And by hung out I mean boned.
I meant TBL commmenter hate. Don’t get it. At least he can be interesting.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:19 AM
becuase they drafted eli manning. had manning not been in the picture, warner would have played longer.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:20 AM
I think TBL is on to something, he’s gets more hate then he is bad. He’s 2nd all time in yards per attempt, 10th all time in completion % and 10th all time in td %. That is top 10 in 3 important categories. He needs to cut down on his turnover rate, but it’s not like it’s any worse than Big Ben’s (same int %). He’s not great, but he doesn’t suck.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:20 AM
Thank you. If Romo has 10 fewer attempts Sunday night, Cowboys win by double digits.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:22 AM
Romo is an average QB. He is better then half the QB’s starting. I’ll take him.

September 23rd, 2009 at 11:23 AM
Chad Pennington has to be top 3. you telling me that Chad Pennington is one of the best ever?
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:24 AM
Chad hutchinson, drew henson and ryan leaf want you to never forget.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:24 AM
Romo is average. It’s that simple.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:25 AM
he was drafted first, then traded. therefore, he’s still the number 1 draft pick.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:26 AM
If Pennington had any kind of an arm he would be really good. Unfortunately that deep throw to ginn says it all. Yes it was a good throw and should have been caught but if you watch Pennington he looked like a kid in the punt pass and kick competition trying to throw that 40 yards.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:30 AM
but this is why comp % is a bogus stat.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Which is why I crusade against the use of stats to define who’s good. Like the many stat monger QB’s that came before him Tony Homo is fantastic in the 1st half or in meaningless games. However when its a big game or the 4th quarter of a close game and you need him to make a play, he never does.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:31 AM
I said he’s not great, but he doesn’t suck. You can’t just fluke your way into top 10 in those 3 categories.
Pennington is #1 in completion %, but he doesn’t crack the top 100 in td%.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:32 AM
I would take Romo over Manning and McNabb.
/Wait we are talking fantasy football right
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:32 AM
Giants 2 and 3 corners were out and Phillips was playing hurt.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:34 AM
I liken Cowherd to Glenn Beck. Says insane things all the time, and I can’t tell if he’s serious or being an ass to get ratings.
/Still never apologized for blaming Sean Taylor for his own murder.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:36 AM
It is not bogus its just not the holy grail. It is very usefull and telling.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:36 AM
It’s bogus to use it as the only indicator, but it is important. Getting positive yards is a big deal in football, especially the NFL. When used in conjunction with y/a, td% & int% I think it gives you a good picture of how much production you are getting out of your QB.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:38 AM
football stats are very tough to use. again, see Chad Pennington being #1 all-time in comp %. sure he is, because everything is a hitch, slant, out or a dumpoff to a running back. it is like Shaq and his high FG% in basketball, but he isn’t a great shooter.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:41 AM
I can’t believe all the Joe Buck hate on his post for being a smug know it all asshole when Colin Cowherd (!) walks amongst us. As always, the FJM takedown of Cowherd ruined him for me. I barely consider him a human being.

September 23rd, 2009 at 11:47 AM
Cowherd just whips stuff up out of thin air and then acts like it’s engraved in marble on the Temple of Sport. And if he’s proved wrong, he’ll either ignore it or twist himself into a pretzel justifying it.
Plus, his voice irritates the holy fuck out of me.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:49 AM
No, we’re down to “does the guy come through with a play when its needed to win a tough/big game”, and quite clearly the answer is no.
Playoff wins: 0
Games in primetime record: below .500
December Record: far below .500
Non-division games in Sept/Oct at 1pm: Super Awesome
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:51 AM
foreheads like a semi: 0
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:52 AM
So you don’t like using production stats to evaluate a QB, but you’ll use team stats instead? I especially like the “Games in primetime record”
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:53 AM
Rings!
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:54 AM
Romo will never win a Super Bowl with the Cowboys.
I will.
The Giants would have made the playoffs that year had Warner remained the starter.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:55 AM
Christ you people kill me, its a combination of the 2, you cant just look at stats and you cant just look at wins. Blend the two together and you start to have something, but all I really want from my QB is a win. If you want your QB to win your fantasy league, go for it, thats not important to me.
Whats wrong with “Games in Primetime”, some guys shine when the lights are on, other guys like half empty stadiums at 1pm on Sunday.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:56 AM
and they wouldn’t have won super bowl 42. i’m in favor of this scenario.
September 23rd, 2009 at 11:57 AM
The Cowboys never play in half-empty stadiums. Ever.
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:02 PM
True. I had Cardinal season tickets when they played at ASU. Their average attendance was probably 30,000 for an 80,000 seat stadium. When the Cowboys showed up they sold out.
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:14 PM
That its probably a Small Sample Size that is highly useless in describing anything besides the past event (which had many factors besides one QB).
Example
Player 1: 0-4 in primetime (all games away at GB, CHI, SEA, NYG)
Player 2: 2-0 in primtimes (all at home against winless teams)
Does this tell you anything at all?
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:31 PM
WAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!
/artie lange’d
September 23rd, 2009 at 12:32 PM
I’m in complete agreeance with this. I was just showing that he has a high level of production and therefore he’s not a sucky qb, not great, but not sucky.
September 23rd, 2009 at 1:29 PM
Last I checked shitty winless teams dont appear much in primetime. What I do know is when I watched the Pats/Bills game in primetime they said Brady was something sick like 11-1 in his last 12 Thurs/Sun/Mon night games. I believe Roethlisberger was 10-0 in his last 10. Romo was like 3-6. I’m not certain on the numbers, but I know I’m close. I also know I watched Romo completely choke away many of those losses, so dont tell me “its a team game.”
