Maybe the Jayhawks Will Lose This Weekend and Get Punchy with the Hoops Team Again
1-liner, College Basketball, College Football, Gangs, Intern Search 2009, Music September 25th. 2009, 5:00pmKansas Jayhawks: The voice of the heartland, Jason Whitlock, has weighed in on the Kansas Kerfuffle: “In pursuit of victories, Bill Self and Mark Mangino have both been recruiting more kids from tough backgrounds. I am not vilifying either coach or the kids they’re bringing to campus. I’m stating an obvious fact. Jacque Vaughn and Sherron Collins have two distinct personalities. A typical college brawl transpires at a bar or a party and alcohol is usually involved. When groups collide at 10 a.m. in the middle of campus, that sounds like gang activity. I’m not calling the basketball and football teams gangs. I’m saying some of the kids are mimicking the behavior of gangs.” Whitlock also translates Tyshawn Taylor’s epic facebook updates, in the event you didn’t know what “mugging” was. KU hoops coach Bill Self said he will dole out punishment behind closed doors; presumably, this involves a paddle to the rear end, or perhaps some naked wind sprints. Even Dick Vitale has written about the fight – and he mentions our intern from last summer! [KC Star]

good point, can agree with this.

Not only did Vitale name drop him, it’s in the very first sentence.

JPQ, why must you hate anyone I like?

To save time in the future I am also a fan of Rob Neyer, Keith Law, Rany Jazayerli, DrunkJaysfans.com, Shysterball, Whitlock, USS Mariner, http://www.rspwfaq.com, and pornography.

I prefer to not slurp either and not bestow aggrandizing titles on any columnist, nor hate any columnist just because of his/her public persona. Well…except for Mike Lupica. Someone can take the air out of his tiny suit anytime.

me either. most of the guys that get slurped the most on here must get paid by the word. They write 5,000 word essays on nothing
I must say, in reading Dickie V’s ESPN article vs Whitlock’s, it’s amazing how out of touch Dickie V is in understanding what is going on

You were born before 1978.
Anyone ever had Clontarf Irish Whiskey? Quite smooth. Highly recommend.

Taguchi: in reading your list, I haven’t ever read a single word of anyone you mention above except Whitlock, and we can agree on porn

bsanders: you do a pretty good job on hating Bob Kravitz
/just sayin’

We hate your favorite band.

I’m really not that high on Whitlock. Congratulations for speaking your mind and all, but as a writer I find him clunky and awkward. He should be one of two heir apparents of PTI, I’d like him much better there.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:25 PM
Well, in Bsanders’ defense, Bob Kravitz eats orphaned Hurricane babies.

The Soul of Baseball is the best Baseball book every written. Buck O’Neil was a saint and Posnanski makes him a man.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:26 PM
at least whitlock usually has an original thought. every other columnist i have ever read is just saying the same thing over and over again. he is one of the most (and probably one of the last) original sports columnists working today
September 25th, 2009 at 5:26 PM
Are you kidding me? That guy is proof that ANYONE can get away with publishing a book.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:28 PM
Whitlock’s article is more nuanced than usual; I’ve read his earlier blasts on gangsta culture, but this one did really well explaining his position and showing his reasoning process. I’m not always a fan of Whitlock, though I do respect him, but this article was an absolutely perfect model of how to write an intelligent and informed opinion piece.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:28 PM
I don’t hate Kravitz because of his persona, I dislike his writing, which is uninformed and poorly researched and when he makes wild proclamations that are quickly proven wrong, he acts as if they never happened. It’s too bad because The Star’s Colts beat writers are really good, even if The Star’s web site is really having a hard time breaking into the online age.

All wrestling books are terrible, including his, but his rants during the Monday Night Wars were appointment interneting for me. He’s not realy relevant now but he likes the same era’s of wrestling as I do. I think he’s probably a moron in the real world. I would have linked to Hyatte, but alas he, Flea, and Szulenski (sp?) have long since departed the internet scene.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:30 PM
scratch that. All wrestling books that aren’t at least ghost written about a specific guy are terrible.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:32 PM
He’s a moron in every possible world. The guy is a farce – he cites exactly zero sources, when he’s wrong (which is often) he refuses to correct simple mistakes, he presents himself like some insufferably snooty know-it-all despite demonstrating otherwise. I miss the days of MiCasa and Scaia.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:33 PM
Bret Hart, Jericho and Foley’s first book are all awesome, insightful, funny wrestling books.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:36 PM
Wow lots of chirping out of Coral Gables. For their sake, I hope the Canes can back it up tomorrow.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:37 PM
I would agree, and I also think Flair’s is worth reading just to understand completely what a conceited fucking asshole he is. Micheals is interesting for the delusion.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:38 PM
professor: you conveyed my thoughts much more eloquently than I did

jericho’s book pwns all other wrestling books. even foley’s. and im sure his second book will rock as well. im kinda in the tank for jericho though because he is a dieing breed. great great great worker and magic on the mic.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:43 PM
I liked it a lot, but I prefer Harts. He’s just so honest about what a fucking asshole he could be, and his life was so fucked up at times. Plus he was in the WWF at the most interesting time, while Jericho doesn’t even talk about WWF in his (know thats the second one.) I’d rank them Hart, Foley, Jericho, but the last two are pretty even for me.
September 25th, 2009 at 5:45 PM
well i disagree. so i must mock you and call you names. you..you scallywag

s1rweeze: the favorite band thing went over my head
I don’t love all of Whitlock’s work. Many times, he aggravates me. I just thought he summed up this situation accurately, and explained how it is a result of other, larger problems in the US.
September 25th, 2009 at 7:16 PM
good stuff from Whitlock on a touchy subject. He is self referential without being self aggrandizing. And those dudes are definitely gangsters ( and I mean that as absolutely negatively as is possible).
September 25th, 2009 at 8:08 PM
I give Whitlock credit for not grandstanding on the issue and presenting a thought provoking perspective. I may not agree with all of it, but that is irrelevant.
September 25th, 2009 at 8:11 PM
ok, they need to edit this… where’s my remote.
