College Football, ESPN, Golf, NBA, NFL, Video September 28th. 2009, 8:00am
Anna Kournikova … increasing taxes on the rich doesn’t always work … there probably should be more outrage over garbage like this … why does Chuck Norris insist on writing about politics … for the unemployed: Try going hiking? … RIP columnist William Safire … woman meets boy at “furry” gathering, bangs him, gets arrested … people won’t pay for news online, part 79 … no sex in the dorms at Tufts if your roommate is present … Fidel Castro has something in common with Shawn Kemp, Travis Henry and Antonio Cromartie … once Republican talk radio gets ahold of this story … idiot sneaks into bear exhibit at zoo …
Baylor sophomore QB Robert Griffin is out for the season with an ACL tear. Massive loss. (Dallas Morning News)
Major fantasy news: Frank Gore out at least two weeks with ankle injury. (NFL Network)
Gameday’s going to FSU vs. Boston College this week. Could the thought process for passing on USC-Cal have been … they were at one USC game already, and probably will have to go to Oregon on Halloween for the Trojans game? (Gameday)
Former UNC star Sean May getting a shot with the Kings. (Sac Bee)
Alabama sophomore LB Dont’a Hightower needs surgery, and he’s out for the season. (Birmingham News)
The last time a team began 0-3 and made the playoffs: 1998. Goodnight, Titans. (Tennessean)
The confusing Tour Championship ended, and Tiger won the most money while Phil Mickelson won 1st place. (NYT)
For Pac-10 fans: “Cal coach Jeff Tedford’s lost 11 games by more than 11 points since 2002. USC coach Pete Carroll’s lost once by 11 or more points since 2001.” (Inside SoCal)
There have been a plethora of disappointing moments in DC sports this season. (DC Sports Bog)
Lotta pressure on Greg Oden this season in Portland. (Oregonian)
Chris Arreola’s tremendous, post-fight interview (fearing loud curse words). “He just found a way to win, and I found a way to lose.”
I heart Trent Richardson. What a punishing hit. Love the reactions from Verne and Danielson, too.

That’s crazy talk!
September 28th, 2009 at 8:05 AM
Did you really need to bring him back for a game against Northwestern State? An injury like that makes me think they’re the Clippers of college football
September 28th, 2009 at 8:08 AM
These are the same people who bitch and moan about welfare fraud, right?
September 28th, 2009 at 8:14 AM
Jay – Not quite sure legally avoiding punitive taxes is akin to welfare fraud.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:17 AM
Prudes.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:18 AM
Hey, I had a great weekend. Penn State looked like total dogshit, and the Steelers once again had a dropped TD/missed FG combo in a 3 point loss. I hate football.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:18 AM
b/c cutting taxes for them has worked oh so well, with the recession and all that, hasn’t it?
September 28th, 2009 at 8:20 AM
That healthcare article is dead on…you exclude the illegals (and the newly legal for 5 years, wtf?), they’re still getting care at the emergency department, only at a much higher cost. But hey, we’re not going to pay for those illegals directly, we’d rather pay 10 times as much indirectly.

September 28th, 2009 at 8:22 AM
It kinda-sorta is if you don’t really live there and you are just doing it to avoid paying taxes. Either way, you are cheating your home state out of money.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:25 AM
why would you exclude illegals from buying into exchanges? do we exclude them from buying milk?
even if you do, if someone shows up at an emergency room without insurance, you can be sure that they’re illegal. you can deport them. win for the republicans. yay, we got one.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:28 AM
now that’s dogshit. what about Oklahoma/Miami?
September 28th, 2009 at 8:28 AM
unasked question about Tufts sex: What if the roommate is involved, such as a 3-some?
September 28th, 2009 at 8:32 AM
Lot of potential key playoff positioning games in week 4: Chargers-Steelers, Jets-Saints, Patriots-Ravens, Packers-Vikings.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:32 AM
Good job, Michigan State. Normally it is a 3:30 start for their game against Michigan. but when your only fucking win is against an FCS school, you get regulated to the Big 10 network at noon. FML.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:36 AM
i really realy really really really hope that i hear as much about the receiver’s amazing catch as i do about favre
/but know that i’m living in the unreal world

b/c cutting taxes for them has worked oh so well, with the recession and all that, hasn’t it?
Good point but it is not that simple. The people out there who are truly rich can easily switch their state residency. For a state in financial trouble raising taxes on the rich may drive the rich to live in another state which will tax them less. The US needs to be careful about this as well. It alread may be starting to happen in the UK:

favre is one lucky SOB that ball was caught. one incredible catch from thw WR, great footwork.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:39 AM
Seriously, is this what its like to be a Browns fan?
September 28th, 2009 at 8:40 AM
they know it is over at the opening kickoff.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:41 AM
agreed, i think it’s foolish to tax them and not close the tax loopholes they pay their accountants to exploit.
but clearly it’s too much common sense to do that, so it won’t happen at all.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:44 AM
Frank Gore out at least two weeks with ankle injury
Just when i thought my ff teams couldn’t get any worse

Lot of potential key playoff positioning games in week 4: Chargers-Steelers, Jets-Saints, Patriots-Ravens, Packers-Vikings
a ton of great games, and per Peter King, most of the country will only see two of them. That Jets-Saints matchup should be fantastic.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:45 AM
Seriously, is this what its like to be a Browns fan?
they know it is over at the opening kickoff.
no it usually over after the opening possession. like take this weekend for example: turnover in the opening drive that immediately led to a Balt. TD. take last week: get the ball at the 20 when the Broncos fumble the opening kick and you can’t score a TD.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:45 AM
Except those tax loopholes make sense. I mean, do you want to stop people from getting writeoffs for charity? For business expenses? For investing in new business in the community? Everyone talks about closing loopholes, but most of said loopholes have great benefits. Now, you could talk about preventing abuse of loopholes, but that’s a whole other issue.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:47 AM
Damn, Jim Mora Jr. doesn’t like kickers.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:51 AM
charity isn’t a loophole, my definition of loophole is off shore tax havens, or declaring residency in florida, but living in a state that has income tax, etc.
should have clarified.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:52 AM
Crazy that the top two seeds in the AFC last year are 1-5, with the only win coming head to head.
Browns might be worse than last years lions, I wouldnt be surprised to see Ratliff starting next week.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:53 AM
This actually helps one of my fledgling teams – I can use Coffee for 2 weeks.
God this weekend was miserable. The worst part was, for the first time in a long time, I expected the Steelers to blow it. Too many dumb mistakes by everyone (Holmes running the wrong route, Wallace running out of bounds, Sweed dropping a TD, Tomlin kicking a FG from the 1, Tomling going for it on 4th and 3 before the half, etc.).
September 28th, 2009 at 8:53 AM
Someone needs to tell me how it is almost 9:00 on monday morning and Jim Zorn still hasn’t been fired yet.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:58 AM
What the hell is gameday doing at the FSU/BC game?
Who gives a shit if they are going to goto USC 3 timese this year.
Whoever is making the gameday decesion has lost their minds. Last week they goto PSU/Iowa now they are heading to FSU/BC
Not sure why this pissed me off but it does.
September 28th, 2009 at 8:59 AM
probably will wind up 2-1 in fantasy. i think i lost one game by less than two points … i foolishly started the raiders D over the packers D. major, major mistake.
lead fantasy baseball championship 7-4 … i didnt even know it was a 2-week affair!
September 28th, 2009 at 9:02 AM
That quote he had after the loss about the Lions on video being as good as anyone should buy him a couple more weeks for comedy sake.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:03 AM
They’ve been coming to the PSU night game the last few years. That wasn’t a surprise, particularly after the history from the previous year.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:05 AM
agreed, i think it’s foolish to tax them and not close the tax loopholes they pay their accountants to exploit.
but clearly it’s too much common sense to do that, so it won’t happen at all.
Ok. I don’t know when we were talking about loopholes. I thought the articles were about state governments raising taxes on the rich. If the rich could avoid the new taxes through loopholes they would do it, ignore the new state taxes and not worry about moving. I guess just redirecting the discussion works for most people. But I agree that loopholes should be closed. (The way hedge fund managers decrease their taxes is pretty disgusting.)
The truly rich may not stay in a state that raises taxes on them. They can easily move and “shop” for a state where they will pay less taxes. Is it fair? Probably not. But it is the reality that cash strapped state gov’s are dealing with.
Loopholes. We talking about loopholes.

we have just regressed in cleveland back to where we were from the start. i like mangini, but only on from a football point of view. but if these fines and other worthless non football BS continues mangini isn’t going to make it to January.

September 28th, 2009 at 9:07 AM
GameDay @FSU-BC?!? WTF. What are the story lines? Bobby Bowden sucking? Jimbo Fisher ready to call Kevorkian? Coach Spaz’s towel? The fact that Boston does not even know college sports exist? Maybe Janikowski will come back and self medicate with the date rape drug and look for willing co-eds. Frigging incredible…
September 28th, 2009 at 9:07 AM
the tour championship is just a tourney, so that’s not confusing.
the fedex cup still is. but damn if it isn’t entertaining. golf was more exciting than any non-SF/Min game yesterday.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:07 AM
roeth – have you recovered from sat night yet? haven’t seen your analysis on the loss. maybe save it for the top 25 post later? i think psu might still be in there …
September 28th, 2009 at 9:07 AM
That Arreola video is sad and hilarious all at the same time.
I’m going to end up 3-0 in one fantasy league and 2-1 in the other because I knew Welker was out, but didn’t know Bowe was out so I put Santana Moss in in one league and left his points on the bench in the other. Now I need the Cowboys to shut down DeAngelo Williams tonight and that won’t because Dallas’ defense is shittastic.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:08 AM

September 28th, 2009 at 9:19 AM
great job by the steelers blowing that fucking game today. as a pats fan i’m happy they blew it, as a gambler im fuckin bullshit. putting money on big ben meant i had to put money on peyton manning last night. and yeah i won, but if theres 2 quarterbacks i hate rooting for its those two.
in other news, BC/FSU on college gameday sounds about as fun as a weekend in auschwitz. i really couldn’t care less about either of those teams.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:20 AM
A novel thought on illegal immigrants …give them enough care to walk again, then ship them back to from wherever they came, which let’s face it is usually Me+ico along with their entire dependent families.
But oh no somehow we can’t do that as would just about any other country with inferior treatment to any American present illegally on their soil.
Warning: Everyone I have met offering an opposing view for these folks to stay never is the party paying for that and either courting cheap labour or votes anyway.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:21 AM
to add injury to insult, at around 10:15 on Saturday, third quarter of the game, a bouncer at the bar we were at watching Penn State said, “we’re clearing out all the tables to make way for dancing, you have to get up”. We had just ordered one of those 100 ounce beer things. for DC area readers, I’d recommend NEVER going to Public Bar ever ever ever ever.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:25 AM
guess you had to drink that pretty fast then spicious
September 28th, 2009 at 9:26 AM
recc, there’s no way you can blame that game on Ben. the pick 6 was obviously Santonio’s fault, and you can’t throw a better ball than Sweed dropped for a TD.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:31 AM
You don’t go watch a game at a bar that turns into a dance club at night. You don’t go dancing at a club that is a bar during the day.
/Science
//Also, dammit you should know better
September 28th, 2009 at 9:32 AM
i didn’t see the game spicious, and im not putting the blame on roethlisberger, i was just in general pissed off at the whole team…i just hate roethlisberger and rarely bet the steelers because of him, however yesterday should have been a lock.
no such thing as a sure thing.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:33 AM
DC area fasci$m made its way to the bars by now I see. That place just plain sucks major ass.

//DC Metro area fucked up forever by Darth Cheney since Sept 2001
September 28th, 2009 at 9:35 AM
maggs, you’re right, but i can only plead ignorance. i’d only been to the place once for a happy hour, and they have like 20 tvs. we all assumed that they’d let us watch one of them.
we ended up nursing our beers until the manager came over to kick us out, i told him I worked as a bartender, I’d never come back and i would tell everyone I knew, worked with and served a beer to about how shitty the place is, and he relented and comped the beer. still won’t go back, and I’ll still tell everyone how shitty it is.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:40 AM
Yeah, because unlike said other countries, America can’t have a guest workers program worth a damn because of the unholy alliance of unions and the religious right. Illegals don’t really like it here, they’d go back if it wasn’t so expensive to get back in for the jobs. And said jobs aren’t the shit that normal americans want. So instead, we end up hosting illegals year round, when we only need them during the agricultural season and they only want to be here during the agricultural season.
I didn’t vote for him, but I certainly respect the hell out of McCain for nearly destroying his candidacy by trying to get a guest worker program through congress. It’s a rare politician that will sacrifice his ambition for what’s right, for what the country needs.

I hope nobody’s still in here, because I have a personal anecdote.
Wife was headed to work this morning, and she came back, her car was running really funny. I drove it around a bit, and it was the exhaust system fucking up the computer system. Anyway, I was to drive it to the mechanic and she would follow in my car w/baby. As we were pulling out, a bull moose walked right across out from behind our garage, and was continuing on his way up the hill. She didn’t see it, so I hopped out to show her where to look.
She was way later to work that she even should have been because we just sat there watching that guy until we couldn’t see him at all anymore. His antlers weren’t all the way ready yet, but they were coming along. And he was freaking huge.
September 28th, 2009 at 9:58 AM

my neighbor won a moose tag this year, in the state drawing. He’s going to kill one this year. It is ridiculous to think about when you’ve seen one, but moose meat is quite good. And extra lean.
I don’t hunt, but I do kill a lot of varmints.
September 28th, 2009 at 10:06 AM
What the fuck is Gameday doing? How are decisions made? Last week is was stupid to not be in Blacksburg, and this week there are three games (USC-Cal, LSU-UGA or OU-Miami) that are infinitely better than Free Shoe-BC. Who the fuck cares about this game? Doesn’t ABC have the rights to the USC and OU games? I understand not going to Athens becuse the game is on CBS. I think that is stupid, but I understand the logic. Free Shoe-BC has no logic.
September 28th, 2009 at 10:11 AM
What the fuck is Gameday doing? How are decisions made?
nothing to do w/ this week, but a few months ago Cowherd said that some schools (he named Michigan as by far the worst) are a real pain in the ass to deal with (restrictions, location, access to team, etc), so, in many cases, they won’t go to certain places, even though that week that might be the place they should go.
He was looking around when talking and commenting on how he’ll probably get in trouble for even mentioning this.
September 28th, 2009 at 10:14 AM
I could see that, but if that is the case the PR dude from whichever schools are like that should be canned. Having Gameday is so good for publicity.
September 28th, 2009 at 10:18 AM

September 28th, 2009 at 10:30 AM
Oh Gods it never was about logic with anything involving BSPN for that matter.
The college football scene is so lame when you get to Washington DC and continue north that any chance to get to a game on the East Coast, particuarly in the best scene for it in the Northeast in Boston, is taken by the suits at BSPN.
Even this East Coast-biased site had a hard time putting up timely posts on college football games until we had pleaded enough for it a few weeks ago, including moving the major posts to morning or mid-day THURSDAY instead of on Fridays when some of us are either working, tired, or already starting the weekend.
To this day when you go to the Northeast and say “SEC,” they are still thinking of the fucking stock market you know. I hate it here and will leave next year.

College Gameday has been borderline meaningless this year. They have been overlooking the marquee games every week it seems. It makes no sense, aside from the cross promotion theory.
