monta_ellisstephen-curryThe Warriors are the new Clippers. Here’s what petulant point guard Monta Ellis had to say about playing in the backcourt with first-round draft pick Stephen Curry:

Q: Can you see yourself playing with Curry in the backcourt?
ELLIS: I can’t answer that. Us together? No.

Q: Why not?
ELLIS: Can’t. We just can’t.

Q: Too small? Too similar?
ELLIS: Just can’t.

Q: The Warriors say you can.
ELLIS: They say we can? Yeah. If they say it. But we can’t.

Q: You wouldn’t want to give it a shot?
ELLIS: I just want to win. That’s… not going to win that way.

Q: Why not?
ELLIS: It’s different when you’re trying to compare me and Stephen, when you’re trying to go back to when me and BD were playing, it’s a different situation. You’ve got a nine-year veteran who’s been in the game, who understands the game, knows how to play the game, and he’s a big body… You can’t put two small guys out there and try to play the 1 and the 2 when you’ve got big 2 guards in the league. You just can’t do it.

Enjoy the Bay Area, Stephon. We had hoped you’d fall to the Knicks so that you’d actually be on TV and part of the highlights package on the 11 pm Sportscenter … but no.

The Warriors roster is laughable. Six guards (Nelson claims that Stack Jack will move to SF, leaving five; good luck explaining that to Corey Maggette, Anthony Morrow, and Kelenna Azubuike all of whom are in the SG/SF mold) will have players griping in the preseason. It really is unfortunate luck for Curry. He’s on a sinking ship that players want off of, playing for coach who always seems to have beef with rookies, in a conference where you won’t sniff the playoffs for at least a couple of years.

We’ll always have the 2008 NCAA tournament.
