nick_adenhartAnaheim 11, Texas 0: The Angels clinched the AL West title again. “About 10 minutes into their clubhouse celebration, the players grabbed Adenhart’s jersey and gave it a dousing.” Next up – Boston. “The Angels are 0-4 in playoff series against Boston, including first-round defeats in 2004, 2007 and 2008. Throw in the 1986 AL championship series, and they’ve lost 12 of their past 13 postseason games against the Red Sox.” Bonne chance!

Pittsburgh 11, Los Angeles 1: Pirates take three of four from the team with the best record in the NL. Andy LaRoche, a 39th round draft pick by the Dodgers in 2003, clubbed two doubles and two homers and had six RBI. Of course, the Pirate managed to screw it up by yanking Zach Duke one out away from a complete game. There’s an outside chance that St. Louis or Philly overtake the Dodgers for the No. 1 seed, but it is doubtful.

Atlanta 4, Florida 0: Thank you, Jair Jurrjens! He scattered five hits over seven innings and picked up the win, Atlanta’s seventh in a row. The Braves are now just two games back of Colorado. Each team has six games left.

john ceruttiHouston 8, Philadelphia 2: The Phillies missed an opportunity to gain some ground on the Dodgers when Cole Hamels crapped his pants (again). The World Series MVP, who had pitched well in four of his last six starts, dropped to 10-10 this season. We’ll plant that seed of doubt: Cliff Lee has only won two of his last six starts after a hot start in the NL.

cecil-espyTampa 7, Baltimore 6: So what’s everyone’s take on the rookie season of can’t-miss prospect Matt Wieters? He only played half a season, and he’s only 23, so take that into consideration when you assess these stats: .286/.339/.412 with eight homers and 39 RBI. Between Wieters, Luke Scott, Markakis and Adam Jones, the Orioles have three quality young bats. Too bad the arms are nothing to write home about and the management is considerably worse.
