Yardwork: Angels Clinch, Secure Yet Another Postseason Series Loss to the Red Sox
Baseball September 29th. 2009, 10:30am
Anaheim 11, Texas 0: The Angels clinched the AL West title again. “About 10 minutes into their clubhouse celebration, the players grabbed Adenhart’s jersey and gave it a dousing.” Next up – Boston. “The Angels are 0-4 in playoff series against Boston, including first-round defeats in 2004, 2007 and 2008. Throw in the 1986 AL championship series, and they’ve lost 12 of their past 13 postseason games against the Red Sox.” Bonne chance!
Pittsburgh 11, Los Angeles 1: Pirates take three of four from the team with the best record in the NL. Andy LaRoche, a 39th round draft pick by the Dodgers in 2003, clubbed two doubles and two homers and had six RBI. Of course, the Pirate managed to screw it up by yanking Zach Duke one out away from a complete game. There’s an outside chance that St. Louis or Philly overtake the Dodgers for the No. 1 seed, but it is doubtful.
Atlanta 4, Florida 0: Thank you, Jair Jurrjens! He scattered five hits over seven innings and picked up the win, Atlanta’s seventh in a row. The Braves are now just two games back of Colorado. Each team has six games left.
Houston 8, Philadelphia 2: The Phillies missed an opportunity to gain some ground on the Dodgers when Cole Hamels crapped his pants (again). The World Series MVP, who had pitched well in four of his last six starts, dropped to 10-10 this season. We’ll plant that seed of doubt: Cliff Lee has only won two of his last six starts after a hot start in the NL.
Tampa 7, Baltimore 6: So what’s everyone’s take on the rookie season of can’t-miss prospect Matt Wieters? He only played half a season, and he’s only 23, so take that into consideration when you assess these stats: .286/.339/.412 with eight homers and 39 RBI. Between Wieters, Luke Scott, Markakis and Adam Jones, the Orioles have three quality young bats. Too bad the arms are nothing to write home about and the management is considerably worse.

I think the Orioles will be capable of competing in the AL East in the next 3 seasons. They have some really young arms that will be up in the next few seasons.
Fetch probably has them in his simulation league and can tell you more about them.
/fully admit fetch watches more baseball than me

pretty soon Ballin is going to take over this slot

ESPN, give us a break. The 10 seconds of footage they showed from the celebration was completely over the top. We get it, ESPN loves the Angels. Do you really need to spend so much time covering a division championship? All they did was make the playoffs. When will this wall-to-wall coverage end?
September 29th, 2009 at 10:41 AM
TBL, are you going to do a post on what sounds like a pretty grizzly accident at USC?

Wasn’t Adenhart killed in an accident by another driver who was under the influence? Isn’t this kind of an inappropriate celebration, or at least an awkwardly ironic way of celebrating him?
/pours one out for Adenhart.

@ms621: I think the sound i just heard was the Angels PR director slamming his head against his desk, over and over.
September 29th, 2009 at 10:53 AM
Had the same thought, ms621. A little weird, though I’m sure their hearts were in the right place. Back when Darryl Kile died, I remember Pujols brought his jersey out onto the field after they’d clinched.
September 29th, 2009 at 10:54 AM
Come on CRM you know they need more time to talk about how awesome the Cowboys are.

Absolutely, it was touching and spontaneous. Just kinda awkward considering how he died.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:00 AM
one of the guys at a really great blog wrote about this.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:02 AM
The TBL reverse jinxing for the Red Sox series starts early!
Can we do a commenter Top Shelf? Let’s just take over Ballin or whatever that ridiculous NBA thing is.

Let’s just ignore AL ROY candidate Nolan Riemold. Why would he belong in that group?
And Matusz, Tillman and Bergensen all had good years – Matusz and Bergensen especially. Arrietta hasn’t even been called up yet and may be just as good as the others. That said, I’m not convinced they can compete in the AL East without spending some big money at some point. Also, these players have experienced nothing but losing their entire time in Bmore. They need to learn how to win at some point.

TBL is only picking up where Sports Hernia has left off.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:06 AM
I need some advice from you guys.
I’m expecting a phone call later today in which I’m going to set up an in-person interview with a potential employer. We conducted the phone interview this morning. This potential employer is 14 hours away, so I’m likely going to fly in. I shouldn’t have to pay the tab, right? I mean, they want me so they should pay, right? Has anyone been in this situation? Have you had to pay?
Thanks.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
sc did you write about it? lefty? i didnt write anything. maybe nickj did.
/nuke the pirates
September 29th, 2009 at 11:08 AM
NDub – You’re gonna have to cover your own travel expenses. It’s pretty unlikely that you’re the only candidate that they are interviewing.
The barometer would be if they are covering relocation expenses should you actually get the job.
/worked in recruitment for a short while

Unless they explicitly offer to pick up the tab, I would assume it’s on you.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:09 AM
@NDUB- you should not have to pay for the flight
September 29th, 2009 at 11:09 AM
@NDub – no, you should not have to pay for travel or a room if you were to stay over night. Never heard of someone having to pay for their own out of pocket.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:10 AM
Everything I’ve read indicates that Baltimore has bright, bright future with the pitching they have in the pipeline. Luke Scott is 31 years old, though you listed four players, so maybe you just like Luke Scott.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
ndub…im the corporate recruiting manager at my company and we always cover travel expenses for people we are flying in. usually if we are flying someone in they are our top candidtae.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:11 AM
sparty the adenheart post over there at that great blog is dumb.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:13 AM
And the Adenhart thing… wow. Almost like society gives mixed signals about the drinking.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:14 AM
@N-Dub: They will pay for it. No way the person interviewing pays for that.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:15 AM
NDub… you’ll pay, but they most certainly will reimburse you.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:16 AM
NDub: I agree w/ mmonast. No way they aren’t paying, and if they aren’t, you don’t want to work there anyway. If that’s their first impression they give out to prospective new employees, you can imagine how bad things are on the “inside”.
Standard for me was always (as either interviewee/interviewer) fly you in the night before, interview the next day & go to lunch for a “meal interview”, then fly home later that day
September 29th, 2009 at 11:16 AM
Keep all of your receipts and shit though. Like every dime you spent from the time you get to the airport. Even gas receipts if you have. If you even buy a toothbrush, keep that receipt.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:17 AM
@nDub: if they didn’t cover expenses I’d really question the rest of their business practices.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:17 AM
OK,so I’ve got four that say the company will pay for it and two who say I will have to pay for it.
I’m guessing I’ll have to fly in. I mean, it’s 14 hours away and they want an in-person interview. That tells me fly in. There’s no way they’d make me drive that, right? Yikes.
It could be quite expensive for a candidate throwing a couple hundred bucks out there on a last minute flight and hotel.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:17 AM
trey’s dumb.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:17 AM
would it have been better if they had champagne? they were celebrating like they would if adenheart was there and alive. people who didnt know him rememeber him for the way he died. the people who knew him will remember him for other things. calm down and just let a cool thing be .

do we have any usc fans?
September 29th, 2009 at 11:23 AM
NDub: I know you are excited and nervous for a job opportunity, but definitely call the hr department and ask if they will reimburse your travel expenses.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:23 AM
SC the company you worked for covers travel expenses for interviewees up front.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:24 AM

good call Jersey. We have some nice people on here dont we?
September 29th, 2009 at 11:26 AM
we had someone drive from michigan to ohio (their choice) and we reemburssed for miles…not a good impression of the company (IMO) if they want you to work for them but you have to cover all travel/relo expenses. we have someone at my company who will contact candidtaes for me and get them set up with hotel/flight information, ask if someone will be contacting you to schedule you flight
September 29th, 2009 at 11:26 AM
You should call them NDub and just ask. It’s not like they’ll revoke the interview. Like I said though, in my experience, most of the time employers that I worked with didn’t like to pay for interviewing expenses.
Can also depend on what the position they’re hiring for is.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:27 AM
You guys are the shit. Lots of helpful information. Thanks. I’ll keep my fingers crossed about the expenses.
@younglefty – This does not disqualify me from our discussions the other night.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:28 AM
sorry thats reimbursed
September 29th, 2009 at 11:29 AM
lol
September 29th, 2009 at 11:29 AM
Someone is contacting me today on behalf of the person I’m interviewing with. I’m guessing along with setting up a day and time that we’ll talk travel.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:31 AM
I’d be willing to bet that they’ll set you up with flight/hotel and will tell you on the call. That’s what those type of calls are for, to go over logistics and such.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:31 AM
First of all, I live in my grandparents attic (I like to even refer to it as the penthouse if you will). Second, I still don’t see what the problem was with moving in with your daughter.

September 29th, 2009 at 11:31 AM
They were also a $800M company…
And they didn’t cover travel expenses for anyone under the old SBU.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:32 AM
Good, good.
What do you know about Macon, GA?
Anyone else?
September 29th, 2009 at 11:36 AM
~Halfway in between Atlanta and Savannah. Not the most happening place on earth.
I know some AMs they flew in to interview. Why, I don’t know. You can go outside the Norcross office and swing a dead cat and hit a dozen qualified candidates for that job.
September 29th, 2009 at 11:36 AM
Macon, GA? My warehouse manager just played a show up at the Big House recently. Allman Brothers old place. all i know about Macon
September 29th, 2009 at 11:41 AM
I went to Macon in 2000 for a huge presentation to their School Board. Four hours later, I was headed back to the trade show I was at in the ATL. Saw a whole lot of nothing driving there and back, but if it’s a good opportunity, what the hell?
September 29th, 2009 at 11:51 AM
Thanks, everyone.
September 29th, 2009 at 12:34 PM
good luck with it, btw.
