Cal Bears: No Rose Bowls Since 1959. With a Loss to USC This Weekend, the Drought Continues
College Football, Video October 1st. 2009, 5:15pm
The Cal Bears will extended the longest Rose Bowl-less drought in the Pac-10 if it cannot defeat USC Saturday. “What’s bizarre about the drought is that Cal isn’t a doormat. Unlike Vanderbilt in the Southeastern Conference or Duke in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Cal has been a serious challenger for titles in recent years … As Cal has watched, other schools with top academic reputations have had their moments. Stanford reached the Rose Bowl after the 1999 season, and Northwestern made it following 1995. It’s as if Cal exhausted all its good fortune on ‘The Play,’ the miraculous kick return the team executed in 1982 that featured five lateral passes and ended with Cal players weaving through the Stanford band to score the winning touchdown.” If you like history lessons, you’ll enjoy this piece. After the jump, join us in laughter. [WSJ]

USC -13.5 would be my guess without looking at the lines.

damn. just looking through buzz bissinger’s thing at deadspin today, had to LMAO at this:
The Fan’s Attic: Buzz, you shit pissing son of a bitch, your Wikipedia page says you split time between your homes in Philly and the Pacific Northwest. You live in Ruby Ridge, don’t you?
Buzz: I did live in Ruby Ridge but I was considered too disruptive. Actually, I now live with Will Leitch. He cooks dinner for me. It’s the least he can do since I made his fucking career.

Hey TBL, I just saw on Awful Announcing that Jim Nantz and Phil Simms are not doing the Saints/Jets game. They’re gonna blow Tom Brady instead. I’m getting a little ticked off here. The Jets get all the headlines for two weeks. Now they go to New Orleans to face a real team, and CBS blows them off, and the rest of the media act like Brett Favre is the only storyline this week. I just don’t understand.

Actually, Arizona has never made it.

Arizona’s Rose Bowl drought is only 31 years, which is the team they’ve been eligible to go to the Rose Bowl since they joined the Pac 10 in 1978.
(That was pointed out in the article linked to above.)

Cal needs to stop playing USC and Oregon and play Troy instead. That’s the key.
