CNN’s anchor is apoplectic over this. He just compared it to Buster Douglas’s KO of Mike Tyson. Talk about not being close.
It sounds like it’s Rio in the lead.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:24 PM
CNN’s anchor is apoplectic over this.
Was it Tony Harris? I saw him interview MJ and he couldn’t understand why everybody wouldn’t want Chicago “They’re in the Central time zone! People from the East Coast AND West Coast could catch live”. Hello? anybody ever hear of THE REST OF THE WORLD!! what a clown….
Then at the end, he told MJ to make sure he mailed him an invite to MJ’s next golf tournament. All the other ones must have gotten lost in the mail
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:25 PM
Isn’t RIO in the Eastern time zone? Seems like TV will be fine to air live.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:26 PM
Good to see murder rates and police corruption are the guiding standards now.
/Rio cops kill more people each year than get murdered in NYC
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:28 PM
i just wish i could go to downtown chicago and laugh at the dumbshits . it looks like the rest of the world is hypnotized by barack obama. and why was his wife there? no one else had their wife up there. tell michelle to go take care of the kids and let you handle the heavy lifting. and finally, fuck oprah.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:28 PM
It sounds like it could be Rio, just based on some of the European’s reaction on the final ballot. But I’m speculating.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:29 PM
Don’t think it’s truly a reflection on Obama. Though if this gets Oprah to shut the hell up, I wouldn’t mind that.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:30 PM
No, it’s an hour ahead.
Most western part of South America lines up with the tip of Florida, Rio lines up with Greenland.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:30 PM
Typical American thought. We deserved the Olympics because celebrites said so.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:30 PM
The narcissist got slapped down. Funny.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:30 PM
The IOC doesn’t care about black people
/ Kanye’d
/ assuming Pele doesn’t count
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:33 PM
The IOC doesn’t care about black people
Clearly it doesn’t.
And here comes the IOC’s prepackaged award show. Hey, it’s Beijing 2008! It had athletes! Fireworks! And underage Chinese jumpers! And blood doping! And no human rights!

Man imagine the corruption that could have been.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Bold prediction: The over/under GWB will be run over by an 18 wheeler as the REAL reason we didn’t get the Olympics is +/- 200
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:35 PM
this is clearly bush’s fault.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:36 PM
This is the IOC we’ere talking about. There will be corruption regardless of the venue.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:36 PM
If we would have let the IOC throw soem shoes at GWB, I beat we could have won.
/joining in the political potshots
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:37 PM
If this is true, all I can say is
CONTRACT THE IOC!!!!
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Next time Lefty or GSG complains that there are only “one or two” other conservatives on this site I’m linking to this thread.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Do the people giving shit for Obama getting involved with this not realize that Bush the Elder met with the IOC to pitch Atlanta getting the games? I mean I’m almost certain they don’t.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:39 PM
Chicago was a shoe-in until Bartman knocked over the ballot box.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:39 PM
Good LORD I butchered that sentence.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:39 PM
What the F? Dont all World Leaders push for their own cities to host the Olympics? Is this just because Obama lived in Chicago for a little while that you guys are happy or something about this? Weird thread.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:40 PM
Thankyou Cracker Jack, thankyou.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:40 PM
Made better.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:41 PM
I got what you meant moleman. I thought all presidents do this to some extent. But no, OHHHH HOW EMBARASSING BARACK GOT PWNED!!!11!!!
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:42 PM
Why do we have to go partisan on this thing? We all know it was craigslist’s fault. Or MySpace.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:42 PM
Bush spends more time on vacation (during wartime!) than any president in history. Obama spends one day pitching the Olympics for an American city and he’s a lazy divided attention sumbitch.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:42 PM
i dont care the obama got involved, good for him. i just like how he failed so miserably and everyone is just shocked that he did. elder bush met with the ioc and was successful.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:43 PM
I don’t look at it as a referendum on Obama, but rather a referendum on Chicago. I don’t particularly care for that town or most of the people from it, so that’s why I’m tickled at the outcome.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:43 PM
people just want obama to fail at something, anything and this is just an excuse to pile on
all i heard all week is the us cant afford this, we dont have the $$, if you are broke dont host a party…so now we didnt get it and its all EPIC FAIL@!!!
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:43 PM
we’ll just have our own Olympics!
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Obama should have been spending his time lobbying for a BCS playoff system rather than this Olympics stuff.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Who are these shocked people?
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:44 PM
I honestly don’t think we would have gotten it no matter what, the IOC hates us. I don’t get why we were the bookies choice.
Yeah but my point is people were giving him shit for getting involved before the result, which is incredibly hypocritical.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Failed so miserably? Shocked that he did? Are you high right now?
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:45 PM
lets look at the bog picture, the gay games are gonna be on USA soil…silver lining
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:45 PM
I’m waiting for him to succeed at something. Anything.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:45 PM
why did we even want the olympics?
lets just send our athletes there, dominate, and let that country deal with the mess. parties are always better when they’re not at your house.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:46 PM
I’m kind of happy that Chicago didn’t get it because I don’t think the host city benefits all that much from the Olympics, economically. Do we, as a country, really still care about the Olympics?
/Wow, I wasn’t expecting a political bent to the comments on this one.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:46 PM
The funny part is, if Obama didnt travel to Denmark to show his support, these same people would be bashing him for not going.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:47 PM
the people who put big screen TVs in downtown chicago and the people who said “well now that obama got involved we are sure to get the olympics!” all those people.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:47 PM
He has succeeded tripling the deficit thus far.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:47 PM
Yeah it’s not like it would have been a benefit to the economy in any way.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:47 PM
I agree with this, I just don’t want Rio to get it. Madrid would be pretty fantastic and the time difference wouldn’t be too bad.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:48 PM

try watching any TV station that has been on for the last 90 minutes. The first literally open-mouthed look was George Stephanopolous(SP?) on ABC, then I moved to CNN, same thing, then ESPN. Only saw those3 networks, sorry.
Looking forward to Olbermann tonight. He should be in “Special comment” form tonight…FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:49 PM
Its gotta go to Madrid, I just heard the story about the old guy pleading for it because he wont be alive for much longer.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:49 PM
I’m waiting for him to succeed at something. Anything.
I’m thinking now that it perhaps wasn’t so smart to push healthcare reform to the top of the agenda. It was never going to take less than 6 months. So now, because Congress has been so focused on this since at least June, if not earlier, they haven’t paid much attention to anything else and no other high profile legislation has made it through and his entire first year is defined by the debate on healthcare.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:49 PM
so am i but to pile on him for this is incredibly stupid
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:49 PM
Gay Games in Cleveland. Terrific. Terrific.
Meanwhile the IOC is giving itself a gigantic masturbation session before they go through with giving us the answer. Complete with anthems that everyone in tuxedos has to stand up and pay attention to.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:50 PM
it’s official….rio
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:50 PM
are you high? he wouldnt have went if he didnt think that he could come away with the olympics. he didnt get what he came for so im gonna put a check mark in the failure column. and again a lot of people said “well obama’s going so we will get the olympics no doubt about it!” and they are shocked that the chosen one failed at it. got it?
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:50 PM

October 2nd, 2009 at 12:51 PM
To be fair, a lot of the shock is they got bounced in the first round of voting. Madrid getting to the final when they haven’t given it to the same continent since the fifties was a massive shock.
October 2nd, 2009 at 12:52 PM
guess now that he has a lot more free time, brady quinn will have something to “fill the gap.”

October 2nd, 2009 at 12:53 PM

But major crime issues and AIDS.

Very cool that Rio gets this shot.

cleveland is in rio?
Ha ha ha!
I think this will be the first and last time Cleveland is compared to Rio de Janeiro.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:00 PM
People are apparently overlooking the fact that 3 of the 4 finalists had their leaders pitch for the games.
It was always going to be Rio seeing as Rogge is an egomaniac who wanted the first South American games to happen under his watch.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:01 PM
The Sochi Olympics are already a disaster, it’s not like the IOC makes good decisions.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:02 PM
Whitest comment ever, TBL. It’s like starring at the surface of the sun.
mole: oh yeah?
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes – ah
When she walks, shes like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes goes – ooh
(ooh) but I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her I love her
Yes I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me

Just a hunch but I don’t think a 40 year old Misty May will be competing. People really getting riled up for something that will never happen.
/Mayan calendar’d
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:05 PM
People are apparently overlooking the fact that 3 of the 4 finalists had their leaders pitch for the games.
It was always going to be Rio seeing as Rogge is an egomaniac who wanted the first South American games to happen under his watch.
fetch: very true, but people also speculated that due to all the Catholics in Latin America, the Vatican was going to appoint their 1st Pope from Latin America. Instead, they picked the guy who was in the Hitler Youth as a kid
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:05 PM
HA!!!!!! I wish TampoBo was here to read this.
This is true. Leaders pitch for their countries all the time for Olympics. Obama just gets shit because people hate him. At least he’s out doing something, not vacationing like Dumbfuck Dubya. Hell, Obama even met face-to-face with the McChrystal while doing the pitch. Not like he was enjoying the weed or prostitutes offered by Denmark.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Instead, they picked the guy who was in the Hitler Youth as a kid
He was an involuntary member thank you very much.
/defensive, non practicing Catholic.

Not like he was enjoying the weed or prostitutes offered by Denmark.
Are you sure you’re not thinking of the Netherlands?
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:08 PM
not that the olympic decision is out of the way, we can all get back to things that matter:
the women letterman banged
NFL
college football
mlb postseason
I’m sure Fox is going to dismember Obama all weekend. what a bad move getting involved there. just like he should never have opened his mouth on that boston cop/harvard professor
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:10 PM
Ah just pulling your chain, I realize what site I’m on.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:10 PM
what a bad move getting involved there. just like he should never have opened his mouth on that boston cop/harvard professor
How are those in any way, shape, or form the same thing?
The Olympics bring billions into the host city. He was trying to get such an event for his adopted hometown because it’s internationally prestigious and good for the economy. That equates to opening his mouth about a raced based arrest how exactly?
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:11 PM
WHY IS IT A BAD MOVE? It’s his city and American presidents ALWAYS get involved with Olympic pitches. And he would have been hammered more if he didn’t get involved and then they lost.
You people are fucking confusing man.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:11 PM
And by “you people” I mean Cowboys fans.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:12 PM
They’re all the same over there.
/purposely short-sighted’d
How are those in any way, shape, or form the same thing?
+1
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:13 PM
Yeah I don’t get why it’s a bad move for him to get involved. It would be a bad move if he didn’t. I also don’t get the whole “we shouldn’t host them anyway, it costs too much” thing. Hosting the Olympics puts tons of people to work.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:13 PM
I guess he’ll have to call his lap dogs in the liberal media and make one more round of television appearances.
/sarcasm
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:13 PM
It was a bad move because the creation of false conflict is the only purpose of our news media, and this will give them the opportunity to tell “Obama failed at the Olympics” for the next week. Luckily we don’t have any problems (that Obama is currently failing at addressing) for them to focus on so this abandonment of their responsibility shouldn’t affect us too badly.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:14 PM
But it would have been even worse if he didn’t get involved and they still lost it. Then it would have been “Obama cost us the Olympics.”
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:15 PM
Yeah I don’t get why it’s a bad move for him to get involved. It would be a bad move if he didn’t.
agree, but you know that idiot Hannity will blame him for wasting his efforts and leaving when so much is going on, and Olberfuck and Ralph Maddow will blame the GOP for the rest of the world voting against us on this
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 PM
it wasnt a race based arrest. but yeah dont get how him being wrong about that arrest has anything to do with the olympics.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:17 PM
I think involved and “failed” has more legs than didn’t go and we didn’t get it. It’s also bad because he specifically said he wasn’t going to get involved in this because health care reform was so important and he should be busy with that, then made a 180 and went, and real healthcare reform is still far, far away.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:17 PM
Fox News and a lot of politicians will probably hammer him on this to divert attention that the latter has no viable counterproposal to the current health care discussions.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:17 PM
I do think the IOC hates us, but not because of the wars, I mean they gave the Olympics to one of the most egregious human rights violators on the block.
No, they hate us because the USOC gets such a big cut of the TV rights money.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:18 PM
it wasnt a race based arrest.
Yeah I kind of blurted that out while I was writing because I wanted to get to the ridiculousness of TBL’s main point. I should have put ‘alleged’ in there.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:19 PM
It won’t be just Fox either. It will be those fake populist assholes on CNN, Cooper and That Bitch With HUGE NOstrils, talking about the cost of the jet fuel to fly over there.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:20 PM
There proposal is our current plan of spending the most and getting the least out of our health care system works fine.

Im going to Rio in March. renting a house on the beach with a group of friends from home. week away from the wives and kids
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:31 PM
@Wheels – YES.
Both are unfair. I’ve found a lot of the criticism he gets comes from people who aren’t even speaking the truth. Just bullshitting and reading off talking points. I’d guess you mean doing TV shows, etc. as “praise.” The guy is likable. And that goes a long way after eight years of an asshole in office with a cocksucker as VP. They clearly weren’t likable.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:31 PM
TBS should watch that next time it thinks House of Payne is the type of programming that elicits laughter.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:32 PM

there were stories recently of an “actor” in the industry in CA bringing back a case from Brazil.

irish: be careful. Serious. I’ve been to Brazil about 5 times on business (with a little pleasure mixed in). One time, the guy I worked with left our group and they found in him beaten up and robbed in an alley in Rio.
The Brazilians we were with had told us over and over to watch out, especially in Rio and Sao Paolo
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:35 PM
I didn’t vote for the guy, but I’m one of the few who don’t think he’s doing such a terrible job. I sure as hell admire his charisma. It’ll go a long way to making something happen.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:35 PM
Wow Wheels’ “Die Quickly” comment looked a lot less angry once I read the article, lol.
He should have gone with “fuck you die slow”.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:36 PM
It seriously does have one of the worst crime problems in the world. The numbers are a bit skewed because of the city size so its rates are lower, but they have thousands of murders each year.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:37 PM
no i mean bullshit praise he gets from people when he has accomplished nothing and people act like he has all the answers. fuck being likable. i would rather have an asshole as a leader. when you’re the boss you cant afford to be everyone’s friend. this isnt a popularity contest. why exactly is he likable? because he can kill a speech someone wrote for him? the color of his skin?(this just in: if you like someone just because the color of their skin that is racist)
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:37 PM
@jpq- i’ve been before. loved it. thanks though for the advice
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:38 PM
I probably should have prefaced it with, that’s what the guy said. Haha
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:38 PM
One time I saw CSI: Miami and Horatio Caine went all the way down to Brazil and shot like eight dudes in a gunbattle then knifed the super badguy. Then he returned to Miami. Sunglasses remained on the entire time.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:39 PM
I actually agree with this. LBJ was a complete dick but was one of the most successful pushers of domestic policy ever, because not only was he a dick, he was persuasive. But if you’re a dick AND don’t accomplish anything good, man you’re fucked.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:41 PM

October 2nd, 2009 at 1:41 PM
At least the time zone is close
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:42 PM
I agree with this, though probably not in the way you mean. Obama’s biggest problem so far is he’s bent over backwards to offer concessions to the Republicans (you don’t offer your compromise position at the beginning of a negotiation, you offer what you actually fucking want) and he’s gotten zero votes from the Republicans for his efforts. He should be on TV with an old lady who can’t afford her diabetes medicine or some shit every single day.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:44 PM
I mean honestly if you have a super majority and are trying to make concessions to the other party, that’s just beyond retarded. The Republicans sure as shit wouldn’t do that, yet the Democrats start eating paint chips once they’re in power. I hate the Republican congress but goddamn if they didn’t get shit done. Evil stuff, but it got done.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:44 PM
Obama’s biggest problem so far is he’s bent over backwards to offer concessions to the Republicans (you don’t offer your compromise position at the beginning of a negotiation, you offer what you actually fucking want) and he’s gotten zero votes from the Republicans for his efforts.
quit blaming the Republicans for all of his fuck-ups! HE HAS A MAJORITY AND CAN’T GET SHIT DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

October 2nd, 2009 at 1:46 PM
the way i mean is telling your honest opinion regardless of how it might be taken. i dont mean come in slap a drink out some dudes hand and spit gum into some chicks hair.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:46 PM
I wasn’t blaming the Republicans. I was blaming Obama for wasting his time trying to offer concessions to the Republicans.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:49 PM
Obama thinks the public wants everything to be bi-partisan, when they really just want shit to get done.
October 2nd, 2009 at 1:49 PM
And of course between red state Democrats and the fact that 2/3 (at least) of Congress (both parties) are financially dependent on the Health Care industry (or, you know, any other important industry that is currently profiting by fucking us) I don’t see serious reform of anything ever getting passed. The two parties tend to be one party representing about four percent of the people.

I’ll disagree that he’s accomplished nothing. You might see results with votes, I don’t know. Obama has pushed the health care debate to a point that no president in a long, long time has. Further than Billy Boy in the early 90s. Obama has also scaled down troops in the Iraqi quagmire during a time when majority public opinion here and there was against our troopload. He’s opened dialogue with Russia and Iran when, ahem, Bush and Co. refused to talk to them. Russia is close to being at least friendly with us again, which could go a long way to keep a conflict with Iran at bay. Whether we like it or not, Obama bailed out those fuckup CEOs who nearly drove our stock market and economy into the tank the past 5-6 years. Again, whether you like it or not, the ARRA is going to rebuild the country’s infrastructure. Where I live, the money has already fixed some shitty (and dangerous) bridges and roads, added parking garages to campuses, and helped a city buy a badly-needed new police station.
He’s likable because he’s charasmatic. He ventures into the public eye doing things not directly related to politics. He talks to Letterman. He plays basketball with UNC. He picks tourney brackets. Etc., etc.
Also, he writes his own speeches. You can google that.
I’m not going to trade barbs with you all day. EVeryone has their political leanings and feelings. I’m just saying what I see.

@mrejr and anyone who cares – I’m not a liberal, just an Obama supporter (for the most part). I’m pretty center on a lot of stuff. I’ve voted Democrat and Republican in national, state and local elections. Just FYI, in case I came off as a lefty in that previous comment.

Also, just because I want to get into a black chick’s pants doesn’t mean I’m racist, right?

HA! I’m down with that shit. I’ve been looking for work on the east coast – Philly, NYC, Jersey, DC, etc. So maybe I’ll land something and we can secure bitches there.

so….isn’t hosting the olympics kind of like having a publically funded stadium? it sounds like a good idea at the time, and all of the attention is nice, but in the end the financial numbers never really make sense.

Ask Atlanta if they think it’s worth it.

They will, but O should have never given them the ammo. What is amazing is how badly the Congressional Dems are making themselves look so damn stupid. The REP’s have no plan for anything, but the Dems are too stupid to point that out and stay on message. Bush was a total failure in a number of ways, but that man and his staff could stay on message with the best of ‘em.

I think these passges from that article make my point:
October 2nd, 2009 at 2:42 PM
Exactly. I first came to Atlanta in 93′ and while it was a good city, it still had a ton of holes especially Downtown while everything was being built up. Now Atl is a full city with a great Olympic park downtown and a Midtown that’s thriving. It’s not all the Olympics, but it jump-started the city.
/Screwed for coming to shitty Atl Olympics > Screwed for hosting shitty Atl Olympics

The Olympics were great for Atlanta. Anyone who says otherwise is just flat out wrong.

Grayson pointed it out pretty simply. And he was funny. That video gets me every time.

Funny, no?

No public option plus no Olympics mean two black eyes for Obama and amidst other factors I cited otherwise in a previous post, no re-election.
