AJ Green is Terrific, Yes, But the Best Player at UGA since Herschel Walker?
1-liner, College Football October 6th. 2009, 12:30pmAJ Green: The masses are still agog over this sick catch by Green late in the 4th quarter against LSU. The knee-jerk reaction is laughable: “A.J. Green is the greatest Bulldog since Herschel. He’s better than David Pollack, better than Garrison Hearst and Eric Zeier, better than Champ Bailey. More than simply the best receiver in the country, Green might well be the best player.” Whoa. Pollack was a 3-time All-American and one of the best defensive ends in SEC history. Hearst, before shredding his knees in the NFL, would probably have been the best offensive player in school history if not for Walker. Green, a phenomenal talent who should flourish in the pros – we’d be thrilled if the Jets got him – has played in 18 college games and can’t possibly be in the discussion with the aforementioned players. Green is in the discussion for best WR in the nation … along with Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd, Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant and Alabama’s Julio Jones. [AJC]

There was offensive pass interference on THE play.

The AJC goes through this every 4 or 5 years. Whatever playmaker UGA has is no doubt hailed as the best thing since Herschel, and one of the top 3 or 4 players in the nation. Green’s good, I’m not arguing that, but I’ve read this same story half a dozen times, and the only thing different is the name of the subject.

Why do you hate me? What the fuck has Jones done to even be in the same breath as AJ? Jones has not scored a touchdown in 12 of 13 games. His crappy QB from last year (or at least that was his excude for not dominating) made the Falcons as a backup and this year his QB is in the running for SEC offensive player of the year, yet Jones still underperforms. Maybe…just maybe he is not all that good. AJ takes a shit on Julio.
As for idiot fans who think AJ is better than Walker: They’re idiots. Walker is one of the best 5 players in college football history. However, if AJ stays 4 years (he won’t) he could be the best player since Walker. He has a Ginger throwing him the ball by punting it half of the time and he still gets his numbers and this is with a terrible running game. He is a badass.

jones has done this and this.
/green produces more, you’re right, but jones is a freak and that makes him intriguing
October 6th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
It’s sort of like Joe McKnight. McKnight and Jones were the faces of their recruiting class. So if they are okay, they will always be mentioned among the elite. You just have to accept it.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
dez bryant is the best
October 6th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
needs more tebow.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
If talent were simply valued on the ability to score TDs, then yes, Green would trump Jones.
Stafford/Cox > Alabama’s QBs
October 6th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
So making catches in practice makes him worthy of being mentioned in the same paragraph as AJ Green?
Julio Jones is a talent there is no doubt about it, but like GOTG mentions, you gotta produce on the field to be in the discussion. It’s pretty much between AJ and Dez Bryant for best receiver in the country. Until Dez Bryant blocks field goals I’m going with AJ
October 6th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
Stafford > JP Wilson absolutely.
Cox > McElroy is LAUGHABLE.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
agreed. cox is pretty awful and mcelroy, while green, is still way better.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
Have you not seen Cox play?
I agree…for now. AJ is the better pass catcher, but Bryant is the better athlete.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
And Brandon LaFell might be a top-5 pick this year.

//but seriously…cris passed his genes on well, duron is fucking legit for a true frosh
October 6th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
You must be high. Lafell is good, no doubt, but he is not a top-5 pick. More like 25-32.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
GotG is that you?
October 6th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
the writer of that article is going by the ‘if it happens today it is the best ever!’ way of saying AJ Green is good.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Too bad he has a man with a woman’s arm throwing to him.
/I keed, I keed.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Ginger Ninja’s stats: 85-144, 59%, 1209 yards, 11 TDs, 6 INTs
Greg McElroy’s stats: 78-119, 65.5%, 1086 yards, 9 TDs, 1 INT
Yeah, not so much.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
mrejr see my earlier comment. Happens all the time at the AJC, and Mark Bradley’s full of shit.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
AJ would have had 37 receptions for 729 yards if not for that bullshit celebration flag.

October 6th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Not at dumb as Schultz. Anyone who think GT is a better program than UGA at the moment is dumb as fuck. No way he honestly believes what he wrote. Surely an editor said, “let’s write something so UGA fans will get upset and Tech fans will get excited.”
October 6th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
LaFell and Terrance Toliver are both beasts. If the LSU offensive line was any better, Jefferson would stop being so tentative throwing the football, and they didn’t cancel each other out, you’d be hearing about them more.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
along with Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd
too funny. Golden Tate, maybe
October 6th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
I agree with 98% of what you’re saying, except for the “get Tech fans excited” part. I wish he’d shut the fuck up and never ever write about our program. That whole sports department is in the shitter. Bisher’s gone looney, Bradley and Schultz are artards, and Barnhart is the only one that writes anything worth reading. At least they got rid of Terrence Moore.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
No paper slurps their own more than the AJC. Anyone who has seen the puff pieces about Franceour, Jamal Anderson when he’s not doing blow from toilets and the David Greene years knows this full well.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Golden Tate is pretty bad ass despite the drops.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
i’m late to the party but dez gets hurt in every game he plays in. AJ is the truth. i have no connection with georgia or alabama, but aj green is far superior than julio jones in every category besides being jacked.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Where’s the love for Syracuse’s Mike Williams?
/Runs away
October 6th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Tolliver was a 5-star WR who has not done all that much yet. I really thought LSU would have a great offense this year.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Columnists, absolutely. Still, DOB and Sekou are two of the best beat writers in the business.

i hope arrelious benn does justy good enough to slide down the draft boards and get selected by the bears. that would awesome.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Yeah, but there are better places for me to read Braves related stuff, and I don’t care enough about the Hawks to read their beat writer. Football’s the name of the game in that town, and their coverage of it blows ass.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
since were pulling out practice pictures of julio jones, i’ll throw out this high school catch by aj green

His sophomore year, to be honest, was shit. But he’s good for a “holy shit” play almost every week. I hope we can kee him one more year. He and Ruben Randle would be a good combo.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
I was talking about a different article.
That catch is amazing.
ALTDan is right about DOB and Seku. Those guys are awesome.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Mike Williams has 41 catches, 623 yards and 5 TDS on an offense that couldn’t block a high school team. No respect. No Respect.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Allow me to interject some truth: 1) how has Jordan Shipley been left out of this discussion;2) Tate is superior to Floyd 3) Jones is at best the 4th best inSEC, behind Lafell and Gurley fo sho IMO.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Receiving wise he seldom makes the “holy shit” play that’s why. Having watched almost every game that guy has played over the past four years he might be the most steady receiver in college football.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
jordan shipley? really?
yay dink and dunk!!!
October 6th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
I don’t want to read all the comments, but the officiating in that game absolutely ruined it. Those refs should be fired.
Now, as for Green, he’s amazing. Definitely ridiculous to say he is better than Walker, since Walker is probably the best player to ever play in the SEC BT (Before Tebow). As for Green, I have the tendency to lean towards Julio Jones, just because he is a freakish physical specimen, and is still growing, but Green seems to be more consistent and productive. Nonetheless, they are the two best receivers I’ve seen in the SEC in a long long time, and they’re both Sophomores. Sick.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
And yeah, Lafell and Toliver are good too, but they’re just good. They’re not “change your entire offense good”, like Jones and Green. Those guys are basically uncoverable, although Jones has yet to breakout this year.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Demaryius Antwon Thomas.
/disappointed in lefty.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Oh, he’s the troof, but I’m not big enough of a homer to say he’s better than AJ Green.
October 6th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
This is the biggest nonsense I’ve ever heard. Floyd is a better receiver than Tate. Period. I love golden tate and he is very dynamic, but Floyd simply punishes corners for playing for daring him to play man up. Tate is awesome. Like, extremely awesome. Floyd is the best receiver in the country.
October 6th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
I still think that Terrelle Pryor is a better reciever than AJ Green and Dez Bryant.
