Twins-Tigers: A Lot to Love About Joe Mauer
Baseball October 6th. 2009, 4:30pm
If you don’t yet love Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, perhaps some of these radical nuggets will sway you. If you live in Minnesota, or have tracked Mauer’s glorious life, forgive us for boring you with details you’ve been aware of for years:
* Joe Mauer threw 73 TDs in two years as a QB in high school, and won a State title. He signed with FSU to play QB, but then entered the MLB draft (where he went No. 1 overall). His high school is known for producing good QBs.
* Joe Mauer was a 2-time All-State high school basketball player in Minnesota.
* Joe Mauer struck out just once in four years of high school baseball.
* Joe Mauer dated Miss America, 2005, Chelsea Cooley.
* Joe Mauer once modeled for Perry Ellis.
* Joe Mauer just won his third batting title in four years (he was hurt in 2007).
No wonder Joe Posnanski wants to make babies with this kid. If Mauer were playing in a massive media market like Los Angeles, Boston, or New York, his popularity would rival that of Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, and Kobe Bryant. Of this, we are certain. [Joe Mauer's Girlfriend, SI Vault]

Good call. NY media would be calling this guy “The Next Thurmon Munson” even though he’s better than Munson.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:33 PM
You better believe that pitcher is hanging out in some dive bar every night, telling everyone that walks in that story as the regulars roll their eyes.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:34 PM
What’s the problem with this? Do you realize how much the child support payments would be?
/starts looking up flights to MN for Mrs. St Bear
October 6th, 2009 at 4:34 PM
One time I was with Mauer in the back of a pickup truck, along with a live deer. Mauer goes up to the deer and says, ‘I’m Joe Mauer! SAY IT!’ Then he manipulates the deer’s lips in such a way as to make it say, ‘Joemauer’ … It wasn’t exactly like it, but it was pretty good for a deer
October 6th, 2009 at 4:35 PM
Consider this the Twins-Tigers open thread.
Bigger, IMO. He’d be dating model-types, for sure. In some places, that matters more than fielding %
October 6th, 2009 at 4:36 PM
This seems really familiar, almost as if it happened just last year
October 6th, 2009 at 4:37 PM
Was that before or after he at a bible while water skiing?
October 6th, 2009 at 4:39 PM
nobody will ever be compared to Munson. Derek Jeter may be captain of the Yankees, but Munson is “THE Captain.” nobody will ever be given that distinction. the guy is so beloved, even though he was just a productive catcher.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:39 PM
I meant for catchers. The only one comparable in NY would be Yogi. Now he’s more recognized for his Yogi-isms for his play. Maybe Piazza, even though Mauer actually can throw.
He could pull in some serious ass. Too bad Minny is full of fat guys, lesbians, and runaways from Ethopia.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:40 PM
oh, now that’s just fucking absurd.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:40 PM
Anybody click that link to the story about Mauer and Miss America? How weird is it to see a post with no comments?
October 6th, 2009 at 4:41 PM
Sparty – the NY media will do anything they can to throw this guy on a pedestal. He’s also a nice guy, from all reports, so they would just blow him in the post game no matter what.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:42 PM
how many times did Bo Jackson and Drew Henson? they put up some insane numbers in high school.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:42 PM
That’s when TBL was ethnically cleansing the comments section.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:42 PM
now you look like a douche.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:43 PM
I’m not going to dig and find it, but I’m pretty sure I got lit up for saying Munson was a top ten Yankee of all time.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:43 PM
/kills self
October 6th, 2009 at 4:43 PM
no doubt. he would be on Jeter level with the slobbering. just saying Munson doesn’t get touched.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:44 PM
just a productive catcher? you act like those grow on trees.there is a very short list of catchers who were good with the bat as well as decent or great behind the plate
October 6th, 2009 at 4:44 PM
you did say he was, and he isn’t. top 10 popularity, definitely.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:45 PM
wow. i’ve never been to minnesota. heard it has a nice mall. does it snow there in october? i can’t deal with 9 months of winter, 3 months of quasi-warmth. to each his own, obvs…
October 6th, 2009 at 4:45 PM
The love didn’t measure the productivity, is what he was saying. He was the Captain because he was the leader of the yankees, not because he was the best player.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:45 PM
His high school is known for producing good QBs
Steve Walsh!!
October 6th, 2009 at 4:46 PM
Word. There are like 2 (maybe 1 or 2 more) in the game today.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:46 PM
Minneapolis is actually quite nice, but when it snows nine months out of the year and you don’t hunt or really care for the cold, you run out of things to do.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:46 PM
Ive heard Minnesota has the best white women.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:47 PM
Once in a while it snows in October, but usually its really nice here in Sept and Oct. Summers stay in the 80s, usually one week of solid 90s. January to March is horrendous, however.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:47 PM
mauer’s deal appears to be up after 2011.
what are the chances he leaves minnesota? hometown kid, fixture in the community, the cheap team will back up the brinks for him …
but what if the Yanks’ offer more? what does the NYY farm system look like at catcher? Posada’s got a few more years left, tops.
what if the Yankees’ offered just under A-Rod money to the guy? could he really leave $10 million a year on the table?
October 6th, 2009 at 4:47 PM
There aren’t many catchers with great arms because if you have a great arm, there’s a huge probability that somewhere in the minors they will try to change you into a pitcher. That’s why there’s no left handed catchers.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:48 PM
In the interest of fairness, I will post some facts about Marcus Thames:
His full name is Marcus Markley Thames
In 2001 Thames (pronounced Timms) hit .321 with 31 HRs and 97 RsBI and was named to the Baseball America Minor League All Star Team.
On June 10th 2002 Thames hit a home run off of the first major league pitch he faced. The Pitcher was Randy Johnson.
Thames has appeared in many issues of the Detroit Free Press.
Thames once wrestled a bear that escaped from a zoo in order to save a bus load of orphans.
In 2005 Thames bench pressed a semi truck to save an elderly woman that was trapped under the wheels.
When Marcus Thames smiles, a rainbow appears in Indonesia.
/some of these may not be “facts”
October 6th, 2009 at 4:48 PM
the mall of ‘merica is fucking huge. been there a few times. very easy to get lost.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:48 PM
but he wasn’t all-time great. i would even put him 4th all-time of yankee catchers.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:48 PM
TBL…oh, just get your “where will mauer move in NYC” post over with. we all know it’s coming.

October 6th, 2009 at 4:50 PM
Mauer’s agent is Ron Shapiro, who represented Cal Ripken and Kirby Puckett, both stayed with their teams their whole career. The Twins know that with the new ballpark opening, they risk alienating the entire fanbase by letting him leave. He is HUGELY popular here, especially with kids.
The Yankees already have close to $70 million committed in 2011 to Texieria, A-Rod and Sabathia. Plus you know they’ll go after guys like King Felix or Greinke or whatever young pitchers are available.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:50 PM
Mauer shouldn’t leave Minny. Apparently the Twins are saving the entire bank for him, which is a good strategy given all the angles you just mentioned.
The Yanks farm system at catcher is pretty much non-existent. Montero is in Trenton, but they might switch him to first.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:50 PM
Don’t think Mauer plays for the Yankees.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:52 PM
If the Yanks get either Greinke or Felix, I will shit my pants.
Fact.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:52 PM
well he did innovate stupid yankee flying tricks. if he didnt die he would probably be just behind ruth, gehrig and dimaggio
October 6th, 2009 at 4:52 PM
No.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:53 PM
Insane.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:54 PM
Watching this special on bridges just reinforces my belief that we really need to improve our infrastructure.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:54 PM
That is complete BS. I was there for at least a few..
October 6th, 2009 at 4:54 PM
big deal. he struck only once. so what? what was his BABIP + VORP + OBPS?
October 6th, 2009 at 4:55 PM
very good points. they’ll do whatever they can to keep him.
true, but remember, we’re talking 2 winters from now (assuming 2011 was right). assuming the US is out of the recession, one can imagine teams will be spending more (Yanks’ have a new stadium to keep filled, too).
assuming mauer is still putting up monster stats and healthy, he’ll only be 28.
IMo, that’s young enough that teams like Boston/NY could throw $25 million a year at him.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:55 PM
Why do you need to add those all together?
October 6th, 2009 at 4:56 PM
but the O’s were spending money in the 90s, that kept Cal around. The Twins won a world series early in Puckett’s career, then another one. that helps a lot to keep a guy around.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:57 PM
The guy who struck out Mauer doesn’t want anyone to know who he is.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:57 PM
When Mauer tells the story of striking out just once, he says it like Joe Piscopo.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:57 PM
WHY NOT!?! IM MAKING NEW STATS!
October 6th, 2009 at 4:58 PM
based on Mauer’s high school qualifications … his dominance has to put him in the upper crust of best high school athletes in the last 20 years.
a lot of guys excel at 2 sports. he was ELITE in Fball (back then, FSU was a top 5 program), and a stud at bball. i’d like to see a list of guys who dominated at the HS level like he did in 3 sports.
couldn’t be more than 20 or 30 guys going back to 1989 (20 years)
October 6th, 2009 at 4:58 PM
Wait so Mauer is going to be overrated, then beat his wife?
October 6th, 2009 at 4:59 PM
The word around Minneapolis is that the Twins are going to try and get this done this offseason. Mauer isn’t stupid, he knows how important this is to everyone around here. He’s gone on record saying being the highest paid “isn’t that important”.
I think it was the 1992 season when Boston made a serious run at signing Kirby, and everyone here flipped the fuck out. Pandamonium. Nobody could fathom losing Kirby. He did the smart thing and stayed, and now he’s a legend here. Mauer’s got the same kind of choice.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:00 PM
Boston has a better shot at Mauer than the Yankees do. They don’t have a blank checkbook right now, at least not like years past. they have $166 million locked up for twelve players after this year, so they’re going to have to spend after this year, too. Assuming the Yanks don’t sign Jeter after 2010, they’ll have $115 million locked up for eight guys.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:01 PM
i didn’t strike out once in high school.
i was once the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review’s high school athlete of the week.
i’ve met mike tyson, superfly snuka, jack ham and adam sandler
there is a girl that has been boned by both me and lavar arrington.
/all true facts
//no strike outs on the cross county team.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:01 PM
Mauer could leave Minny for the money, but he won’t, he’s not that kind of guy. LeBron, on the other hand…
/looks at Spence
October 6th, 2009 at 5:02 PM
i dont care if jeter is wheelchair bound the yankees arent letting jeter go to another team.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:02 PM
by 2011 the yanks won’t be concerned about rocketing past 225 million in payroll.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:02 PM
at the same time?
October 6th, 2009 at 5:02 PM
looks like Cabrera was probably still drunk when he got to the plate Saturday.
http://www.detnews.com/article/20091006/SPORTS0104/910060428/
and if he drove himself to the park, he was probably still legally drunk
October 6th, 2009 at 5:03 PM
there is a girl that has been boned by both me and lavar arrington.
spicious: with that pornstache, I’m guessing it ws a DP and you and Lavar were giving high fives before the money shot
October 6th, 2009 at 5:03 PM
at the same time?
no, poor wording there
October 6th, 2009 at 5:04 PM
exactly, mrejr, the Yanks will sign him, throw him out in center or whatever (although he had a decent defensive year this season) and give him around $15-20 mil.
I don’t think the Yanks will spend $230 million. There has to be a cap somewhere.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:05 PM
Tampa, Minnesota and Wisconsin are seriously underrated.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:05 PM
i guess we will never know. he was picked up by someone from the tigers. what are the chances they drove him to the stadium?
October 6th, 2009 at 5:06 PM
gsg, drop me an email
October 6th, 2009 at 5:06 PM
jpq, i’m glad you like it, it is totally me. i grew my beard for 3 months, and then shaved it off except for the stache for a few days.
I’m still seeing my old avatar
October 6th, 2009 at 5:07 PM
Maybe Cabrera jogged to the stadium…
October 6th, 2009 at 5:08 PM
Literally, on the same webpage you linked to is a link to a story that says someone from the hotel drove him home.

Next you’re going to tell me he endorsed British Knights.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:18 PM
Cursed – You see what they did to OandAradio.com? Blasphemy.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:19 PM
Probably. Supposedly the best ever high school athlete was Danny Ainge. “Danny Ainge is the only person to be a high school first team All-American in football, basketball, and baseball” (according to wiki).
I’d like to know how many guys were top 20 recruits in two sports. Pryor in some services was a top 20 basketball recruit.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:19 PM
2 out double by Mauer. stretched a single into a double.
Go get him, Cashman!
October 6th, 2009 at 5:19 PM
FUCKING BURNETT CHOSE TO HAVE MOLINA CATCH FOR HIM IN GAME TWO! Great, so we lose Posada’s bat, and there’s still the (likely) chance that Burnett shits the bed.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:21 PM
Joe Mauer once took a dump in Lake Minnetonka to purify it. you can now go to Lake Minnetonka and drink from it as is
October 6th, 2009 at 5:21 PM
I hate beer commercials that have one tap at a bar. Idk why it angers me, but I just keep thinking “That bar would be out of business so fast…”
October 6th, 2009 at 5:22 PM
ainge would be up there … if we went back 30+ years.
did Pryor even play baseball?
Lotta guys were good at 2 sports (LeBron, etc)
Tim Couch was a hoops star in Kentucky, but dont know if he played a 3rd sport …
October 6th, 2009 at 5:22 PM
Really no need for radio show’s like there’s to have a website at this point. XM/Sirius will not allow them to post clips (which is horrendous in terms of marketing). Yet every show is available via torrent anyway for free.
So much of their show is better visually. To see Jimmy Norton eviscerating the poor guests that had no idea what they were walking to (and the looks on their faces) would be priceless. There’s a good clip out there of he and Chris Jericho going at it. They’ve since made up and now he’s a friend of the show.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:22 PM
See? Fat guys and fat women in Minny.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:23 PM
other thing about Mauer is that in the last 10 years many athletes have gone sport-specific in an opportunity to get that scholarship and become pros. so guys will go year ’round in hoops or fball or baseball … and not even waste time with the other sports.
So who knows, maybe Mauer is the last great, all-around high school athlete.
/still looking for 3-sporters
October 6th, 2009 at 5:24 PM
Cursed – I used to be into PalTalk with O&A, then Sirius shut it down. OpieRaadio still has quality vids on it, and I like that I can just go see them rip Stern over and over again on his page.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:24 PM
cabrera with a double off the wall in left center. he’s sober!
October 6th, 2009 at 5:24 PM
True TBL. LeBron would have definitely been a top 20 prospect in football. Of course, Kobe would have been one of the few basketball players to actually qualify for an academic scholarship (I hear he was a decent soccer player too).
October 6th, 2009 at 5:25 PM
Cabrera with a stand up double to lead off the second.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:25 PM
seeing my face up there is freaky. gotta change that.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:25 PM
next year (2010 season) is the last year of Mauer’s contract.
Twins better sign him this offseason, if Mauer hits the open market after the 2010 season they won’t get him back.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:25 PM
Beat me to it, TBL.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:25 PM
There’s a kid here in KY that’s both a soccer star and is a kicker in football who got offers from Purdue and Minnesota. So…yea…
October 6th, 2009 at 5:26 PM
Three sporter Carl Crawford
October 6th, 2009 at 5:28 PM
C’mon, TBL, don’t settle for the low hanging fruit ala Jay Leno.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:28 PM
Runners at the corners. If history tells me anything, Inge will strike out here.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:28 PM
I didn’t know Crawford recieved basketball scholarships from UCLA. Jesus.
Also, for you FJMs out there, there’s always DARREN ERNSTAD.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:29 PM
I’m interested in other guys who were major 5-star prospects in two different sports. That would be pretty interesting to look into.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:29 PM
If you include track, I am sure you can find a lot of three sporters.
Winfield is still the only guy to get drafted in three sports though I think.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:29 PM
This umps stike zone on Inge is fucking small as hell
October 6th, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Clown? Are you here? Have a noggin aka Nick Jr question for you.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Do you know how tough you have to be to be a punter? You really see that football mentality manifest itself on the diamond.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:33 PM
I will actually defend Leno. There are always those throw away easy one-liners that have to do with Bush/Obama/Kanye..etc. But, he always throws in 4 or 5 jokes that are very edgy for network TV. I Know all the blind followers of Stern like to rip him for being “safe,” but I think Letterman is way, way more safe.
I watched Letterman the night of his big “reveal,” and I couldn’t believe how seriously bad his monologue was. I don’t need to be blown away my a current events joke to be entertained..but his stuff was as hack as hack can get. Plus his delivery his just awful. At least Leno tells jokes like a standup comedian does.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:33 PM
i just watched the clip and i am even more confused as to why anyone is a fan of stern or O&A. there crew and the host are no talent hacks.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:34 PM
for all those that don’t know
October 6th, 2009 at 5:35 PM
O&A are fucking hilarious. Stern has been mailing it in for years. It was nice of Sirius to do that three weeks free trial when STERN WAS ON VACATION. Then again, he’s always on vacation.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:36 PM
TBL – our youth soccer team starts “recruiting” players for a traveling team by 3rd grade. And if you want to do that, you can pretty much ignore playing any other sports. It is year round…..when they are 8 years old. Just ridiculous.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:37 PM
My only real issue with O&A is that they sometimes get to Jimmy oriented. His sex stories are a little too odd to listen to.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:38 PM
No, you’ve got it all wrong. Just b/c someone isn’t your style doesn’t make them hack. What does make them hack is just blindly doing morning zoo radio (O&A chronicle this very well during “Jocktober”..everyday making fun of a local morning zoo show submitted my their fans).
Stern and O&A produce more memorable radio than the rest of the country’s radio combined. It gets contentious, most of it is organic, and it’s outside the box. That’s the polar opposite of everything I know to be “hack.”
October 6th, 2009 at 5:39 PM
degrassi: it’s about to get real!
October 6th, 2009 at 5:40 PM
Furthermore mrejr8234 (and I do enjoy much of your commentary and twitter), but it seems like maybe you can’t take a joke some times. And in that case, I can see why you’d abhor stern and O&A. I remember making an armed forces joke after Navy scored on OSU, and you got all pissed about it. To me, in humor, everything is fair game. EVERYTHING.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:41 PM
i think you got it all wrong. if you have to rely on shocking stuff to be remembered you’re a hack.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:41 PM
So… Jay Leno, Opie & Anthony, and Stern are the best we got? It’s not just people in Cleveland that are cursed then.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:43 PM
But that’s not all that those shows do. Opie and Anthony do terrific interviews sometimes. They had a dude on who’s done all the famous autopsies, and I was there riveted. They through humor in the interview, but also got intriguing stuff out of the guy that I never knew about. They do that all the time. Stern does as well (although a little too many porn interviews and sex questions for my tastes).
October 6th, 2009 at 5:43 PM
Very true. If you make fun of something you have to be able to make fun of everything. And you can’t get upset when people make fun of you, either.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:44 PM
O&A do the bits because the bits are funny. Not everyone can be the fucking Bob & Tom combination in the morning, or I’d kill myself.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:44 PM
for all those that don’t know
thx gsg. I read that post like every other single one I ever did of theirs. Opened it, clicked page down just to get a headache from all the bold, italics and regular font, decided not to click on any one of the 76 hyperlinks, and, just because I’m “edgy” and a contrarian, refused to read their instructions interspersed on what “voice” or “tone” I should read it in, so I get be a part of their snarky party.

Well they’re the best at what they do. There are many other mediums out there for talk/entertainment. They’ve earned cred overtime, so I’m not sure why their standing or success is negative in your eyes.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:46 PM
i can take funny jokes about the military but your joke wasnt funny. and i guess since you werent in the military(or if you were you didnt take pride in it) you wouldnt get why someone would be offended at your lame ass attempt to make a joke at the expense of the military. here is a newsflash for you: shocking doesnt always mean funny. norton couldnt be a roadie for pryor or cosby he is a fucking hack.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:46 PM
