Rush Limbaugh the Racist: Basketball is the “Favorite Sport of Gangs”
1-liner, Gangs, NBA, Politics October 7th. 2009, 3:15pmRush Limbaugh: Here’s the latest from the racist, wannabe co-owner of the St. Louis Rams, Rush Limbaugh: “What do you spend the money on to fight gang violence? Afterschool program — don’t we already have afterschool programs? Don’t we already have — what do you call it, extracurricular events? Midnight basketball — I mean, we’ve done it all. We’ve taken the favorite sport of gangs, and we put it at midnight to get them on the basketball court.” David Stern, kindly pick up the white courtesy phone … [Media Matters]

The solution is not programs that treat the symptoms of the problem, gang violence, instead of the problem itself, poverty and income inequality, which has been exacerbated over the last thirty years by policies that favor the rich over the poor (which is then sold as the free market).

Maybe that’s why Paolo has been liking me lately. I just don’t understand the point of view that says, as rich people, “I’m better off with a large raging pissed underclass” than I am with a slightly angry, extremely jealous but comfortable middle class.”
October 7th, 2009 at 3:41 PM

Where does it say that income should be equal?
October 7th, 2009 at 3:42 PM

Definitely not in “How to be a Republican While Sipping Your Chardonnay in the Study.”
October 7th, 2009 at 3:44 PM
Where does it say that income should be equal
Income shouldn’t be equal, but if everybody has enough to survive (not go on the nice vacation, or get the big house, but live comfortably, expect reasonable health care, etc.) then everbody is better off, even the guy who is only worth 1.2 billion instead of 15.
October 7th, 2009 at 3:44 PM
This is one of the things that gets said alot that I don’t understand the most…and lefty, I’m not saying anything about you, because really, I don’t know your political leanings.
But, like, people who call themselves capitalists seem to say this alot, and it just makes no sense for a capitalist to take that point of view. It’s not about income needing to be equal as some sort of basic right point of view. Income equality helps everyone to keep making money and has tons of other benefits too. I just don’t get why capitalists are OK with such a growing gap in income inequality, it’s just gonna lead to them being less rich.
October 7th, 2009 at 3:45 PM
then everbody is better off, even the guy who is only worth 1.2 billion instead of 1.5.

Citing a media matters article about Rush Limbaugh is kind of like asking Aminadinajad his opinion of Jews.
October 7th, 2009 at 3:45 PM
The irony is that Rush is branded a racist when those who came up with the notion of ridding the streets of crime by throwing the kids a basketball are lauded as progressive thinkers! Regardless of what one thinks of Rush (I’m a conservative, but not a huge fan), this is a silly exercise in a George Soros blog looking to smear Rush with the race card.

Rush says some shit that is just to rile people up (like the Olbermann’s who bite hook, line and sinker).

October 7th, 2009 at 3:53 PM
that’s just silly, anyone worth that kind of money has most of it offshore and in tax havens so they wouldn’t have to give up that much anyway.
October 7th, 2009 at 3:54 PM
Problem is, that the more we become a welfare state, the less incentive there is to work hard and rise above your station, and the wider the gap will become. We also seem to have a wide sliding scale on what is “rich” around here. When it’s something like this, it’s somebody who’s a millionaire, but as recently as a couple of weeks ago 120k/year was upper class.

October 7th, 2009 at 4:00 PM
She didn’t work hard enough?
October 7th, 2009 at 4:00 PM
Love the JR Smith pic. What a fucking douche.
I think its just a terrible paradox, specifically in the States. It is possible to get out of bad circumstances (such as gang culture in your surrounding neighbourhoods, etc), but it takes a person of extreme character and determination to do that. Kids that grow up poor are either consumed by trying to get rich or get known quick (hence, crime comes in) or are focused on something specific and try to develop it, which is much rarer.
In the end, I don’t see a feasible solution for this. the reason the poor are poor is not because they don’t have the opportunity to get rich, but more so the circumstances that surround them. It’s hard to concentrate on making it big with a university degree when half of your friends are surrounded by gang culture and offer easier methods of getting money, with half of the hard work.
October 7th, 2009 at 4:01 PM
Of course, you can make every single life decision “correctly” and still be poor. Just as you can act like a completely useless maroon and be rich.
One of the troubling things about this argument is the conflation of “rich” with “good” and “not rich” with “bad.”
October 7th, 2009 at 4:02 PM
The 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s have been prosperous times for top U.S. executives, especially relative to other wage earners. This can be seen by examining the increased divergence between CEO pay and an average worker’s pay over time, as shown in Figure A. In 1965, U.S. CEOs in major companies earned 24 times more than an average worker; this ratio grew to 35 in 1978 and to 71 in 1989. The ratio surged in the 1990s and hit 300 at the end of the recovery in 2000. The fall in the stock market reduced CEO stock-related pay (e.g., options) causing CEO pay to moderate to 143 times that of an average worker in 2002. Since then, however, CEO pay has exploded and by 2005 the average CEO was paid $10,982,000 a year, or 262 times that of an average worker ($41,861).

All I know is that you know we are screwed as a country when the neo-cons openly cheer that the US lost the Olympics. How did the Olympics become partisan? Was this not the U.S’s. bid, and not the Left’s bid? If Bush has gone to some country to get the Olympics and gotten it Sean Hannity would be blowing his load over it. Fucking douchebag that he is.
October 7th, 2009 at 4:06 PM
And if all three are true, well then, boo fuckin’ yah.
Besides, that’s not even in the strategy Top 5.
October 7th, 2009 at 4:06 PM
But, most programs that lead to a welfare type state are compromise type programs people don’t want to spend money to do a lot of the things Limbaugh is talking about.
I wouldn’t say that people would be given less incentive to work hard and rise above your station, mainly, I think the opposite. Right now, a lot of people that work hard and do have incentive to rise above their station don’t end up seeing the benefits of that hard work.

October 7th, 2009 at 4:07 PM
Sure bad things happen to good, hard-working people. But good, hard-working people that make good decisions don’t end up old and homeless, offering to sell their vote for some help. It’s a big jump from getting laid off, or having some sort of accident to living on the street, with no prospect of even getting a minimum wage job. If you’re in that situation, it’s not a result of “bad luck” or a couple of unfortunate events.
October 7th, 2009 at 4:07 PM
Not racist but just throwing this out here.
I live in a suburb of Toronto. My city is not “poor” in the slightest sense. In fact, there is no such thing as a “project” here; it is essentially all nice apartments and decent to large sized housing. However, even in my high school, kids (black, white, whatever) chose to act as if they were dealt with circumstances of the poor. Whether it was dealing drugs on the side, or getting into “gang” fights, or skipping school to do both, it happens. And it happened to a large majority of the black students in my school…all of which came from nice, middle class families. So what is the analysis on that?
October 7th, 2009 at 4:08 PM

October 7th, 2009 at 4:12 PM
The point is – you make yourself what you want to be. People that are poor are given unfortunate circumstances, but none that they can’t get out of if they put thier mind and effort to it. It’s harder for the poor to rise from obscurity, but in the end, they do have the chance, its jus a matter of taking it, which unfortunetly doesn’t happen in most cases.
October 7th, 2009 at 4:12 PM

i think it’s easy for all of us to look at a picture of homeless people, unemployment numbers, home foreclosures, personal bankruptcies and drug addicts, etc, and say “well, it’s all the choices they made. it’s not my problem.”
it’s when you know someone who is just a number in the unemployment line, number of bankruptcy filings/home forclosures that you realize the system our elected officials put in to place has failed each and everyone of the people who have become a statistic. it’s a dark day in this country when our first reaction to the less fortunate is to say “not my problem, i have healthcare from my employer.” “not my problem, i made my fortune already.” “I work hard at my job, it’s not my problem they can’t work hard, too.”
someone said the lack of values teens have this day and age is disturbing, i agree, but it’s the lack of empathy we have as a country that is the most disturbing of all. how the hell did we survive as a country, how the hell did this country get founded, without empathy for our countrymen?
October 7th, 2009 at 4:23 PM
And some of the white kids I knew from the mean streets of Oakland County, Michigan were enjoying general vandalism, snorting blow, using LSD and heroin while the rest of us were just partaking in a little green. Kids do stupid shit, its just that I’m guessing its much easier to judge things that you don’t understand. So “gang” fights are for the “poor”/”ghetto” whatever, but everytime we hear some story about suburban hazing I’m guessing you don’t make some gross generalization about white people.
/Why can’t we just get along
October 7th, 2009 at 4:23 PM
Not really. Work hard enough was a nice enough notion to keep the masses moving during the agriculture and industrial ages in this country, but in this age of the service based economy, networking is as valuable if not more so than how hard you work.

Gang culture will always exist, because there will always be marginalized people who are surrounded by unfavourable circumstances all of thier lives and turn to a criminal lifestyle; however, I have no sympathy for people who are given opportunities but do not make use of them – whether they are black, white, brown or purple; I couldn’t give a fuck.

So the government wouldn’t pay the brain surgeon? Because I get the impression he gets paid everywhere else in the western world (where they all have government health care). And they also spend less for their treatment and get a better quality of care.

it’s become an ultra political partisan debate. i doubt if you ask any of these politicians, one on one, they really believe in what the party is speaking. i mean, these politicians, left and right, look out for their re-election first, constituents second.

Even if you have well water for your home use, you use that reservoir either directly or indirectly in some aspect of your life.
When I was a kid, I played Little League at a park that wasn’t a public park, but privately owned. My parents taxes still went to maintain the public parks, and they paid from their own pocket to help maintain the private one. Is that fair? Not necessarily.
Nothing you consume travels over the interstate system? That must be tough.
Not sure what a commuter tax is, but I’m of the opinion that all of these taxes that are environmentally focused are bullshit, and that’s what that sounds like so I wouldn’t be a fan of that in the first place.

Exactly. Someone care to define “free” for me?
October 7th, 2009 at 4:48 PM
You’re missing the point.
People with certain skills are not produced overnight, and in the US they make a lot more money than in other “gov’t healthcare” systems. And ‘better quality of care’ is actually not true unless you are only talking about those that can’t afford it in the US.
And you said HE… sexist.
/sexism isn’t as much fun to debate as racism.

Free is defined as $1.05.
October 7th, 2009 at 4:55 PM
I know that freedom costs a buck oh five, but I need to know what “free” means in terms of “free healthcare”.
October 7th, 2009 at 4:55 PM
just started to read the comments now. really hoping it didnt get out of hand …
October 7th, 2009 at 5:00 PM
i’m going to take a stab at it and say the definition of free healthcare is the recipient of the healthcare does not receive a bill, but all taxpaying individuals contributes a portion of their salary to put into a government run pool to pay for everyone’s healthcare.
/i’m not in favor of that, i just want more affordable healthcare.
October 7th, 2009 at 5:00 PM
. We all pay for things through our tax dollars that we don’t use, because we aren’t paying taxes for our own consumption, but for the municipality/state/country we live in as a whole. Your parents may have felt the need to pay for a private park for you to play in, but you had access to a public one if they so chose. Just as you mentioned that we all directly or indirectly use the interstate system or the resevoir, we are all directly or indirectly touched by the person who is unemployed or homeless. There is an economic theory that states that 6-8% unemployment is better for the system than 100% employment because it maintains a level of competition for jobs. Personal responsibility in a society that doesn’t look out for it’s most vulnerable is nothing more than a shield to hide a collective selfishness.

Very tame for a political/ racial post.
And free healthcare only costs to those that can pay taxes. Lots of them to be exact. Wait… do you think the hospital food is better when it’s free?? Nothing like a free meal, eh hoser?

I bet it’d taste pretty good for the people starving to death, but that’s probably communist.

Rush’s point is that its foolish for Arnie Duncan and the Obama administration to think that they can fix the youth violence issue in Chicago by spending more money on government programs. And bigger picture than that, Rush was saying how foolish this government is in thinking that FEDERAL government spending is the solution to every problem. Just throw money at it! Stimulus bill didn’t create jobs? Do another one! Spend, spend spend! All the government spending and corrupt politics in Chicago has created a situation with this violence and the city is deep in debt. Its a huge mess. All created by Obama and his cronies.
BTW, Linking Media Matters and calling Rush a racist?….When did you start working for MSNBC? That is weak.

October 7th, 2009 at 6:08 PM

October 7th, 2009 at 6:39 PM
You’re right. Rush is a bastion of open mindedness
October 7th, 2009 at 6:48 PM
If you don’t think Rush is racist, you have the brain the size of a peanut
October 7th, 2009 at 7:42 PM
Agreed, PL.
Media Matters nor any other Website created the Rush quote. He created it. It came out of his mouth.

I’ve been gone from this thread for a while, too. Lotta stuff here. The reappearance of PurdueMatt(!?), the news that Obama invented corruption in Chicago…

Extremely late to the party, I am down the middle of the road as they come, but Taguchi had it right. The gap between the highest earners and the lowest is ginormous and not sustainable. The disappearance of the middle class is the most frightening thing that could happen to our current empire. You look back and you will see a direct correlation between a crumbling empire and the disappearance of the middle class…
October 7th, 2009 at 11:47 PM
Holy shit. Is that what some of you people actually think it is — free? Wow. There are no words for the stupidity of this comment. I’m six hours late but couldn’t pass this one up. Just. Wow.
