Scenes From a Classic: Twins Win AL Central
Baseball October 7th. 2009, 10:15am
Were it not for two significant NFL happenings this morning, the sports world would still be buzzing about last night’s MLB play-in game, won by the Twins in 12 innings. It was an outstanding game – despite Chip Caray’s ineptitude. They’ll play the Yankees later today, perhaps with Miguel Cabrera-sized hangovers. The game, in photos, after the jump.
Above: Carlos Gomez scored the game-winning run and proceeded to enjoy the low-flying celebration. We’ve had visions of doing this on the basketball court. It might look cool moments after throwing an alley-oop pass. Gomez note: He is a former New York Met. Of course.
Orlando Cabrera belted a 2-run homer to give the Twins the lead in the 7th. Here’s video of it – enjoy it quick before the MLB gestapo take it down. Cabrera later called this the best game he’d ever been a part of; Red Sox fans took umbrage. Minnesota loves Cabrera.
Thrilling play at home plate in the 10th. Great slide by Casilla – who later got the game-winning hit – but an even better tag by Laird. Look-ahead to game one of the ALDS: Casilla will almost certainly be starting at 2B. He’s 9-for-13 in his career against CC Sabathia.
Here’s another celebratory shot of Gomez. Put that on a Wheaties box.
To those who said the Tigers didn’t choke … Minnesota is the first team to win a division after trailing by three games with four games remaining.
As for Minnesota’s chances against the Yankees, few will give the Twins a shot. Nobody’s giving them a chance tonight.
Twins are true believers – in themselves (Yahoo Sports)
A game so compelling that no one will forget it (Freep)

It’s interesting to me that lengthy games are just considered classics no matter what (see Cuse/Uconn 6 ot game). This game had some horrendous defensive plays and some extremely questionable situational hitting.
Was it entertaining? Sure. But let’s not act like it was terrific baseball personified.

I just cannot make myself watch an entire baseball game. Even a game that was as good as last night’s game. I watched part of the seventh, got bored waiting while they swapped pitcher’s in and out, and switched to Family Guy.

The Playoffs are going to be brutal. I’m not starting watching a single game before 11pm

There were at least 5 times the Tigers had the opportunity to win this game. TWO times there was a man on third with zero outs who did not score. The Rayburn dive in the outfield was just a terrible baseball play (you have to dive head first and at least knock that ball down. The Polanco miss at a double play ball up the middle would have been a tough play, but that ball should not have gotten through. Oh and Minor is terrible and where the fuck was Perry? That is all I have. Twins deserved to win because the Tigers didn’t take advantage of the myriad of advantages they were given. Piss poor.

Word. That game was awful.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:22 AM
Go Twins!! beat those Skanks
October 7th, 2009 at 10:23 AM
especially the play by rayburn when he went for the shoestrings catch, and instead put the leadoff and tying man on third.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:24 AM
If you remember where it was played, it all comes into focus.
/fuck the Big East

Quick word on Gomez. He should be better. He has speed and defense and is a big kid with a great arm. If he gets his bat out of his ass, look out. He has “all five tools” as they say.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:26 AM
who is saying they didn’t?

Chip Caray is down right awful as a lead announcer. Do. Not. Like.

Exactly.

I was forced to listen to most of this game in the car. Dan Shulman is the anti-Caray. The guy is awesome. Knows his stuff, rarely uses cliches and knows how to emphasize the important plays without being totally over the top. He needs to be ESPN’s #1 play-by-play guy.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:27 AM
como?
October 7th, 2009 at 10:29 AM
Both teams played feisty enough that I’d prefer the Yankees have a 1st round bye.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:33 AM
Shulman is great on College Basketball.

you made this same stupid comment last night, and everybody ignored you. Learn to take a hint.

agree that all games should start at 5 pm.
my new bedtime is 11 pm because i have to wake up at 6 … i only stretch it under extreme circumstances. there’s a chance i wont see 2 innings of red sox/angels

I just can’t get into baseball. The Braves were in contention for the playoffs up until the last 5 days of the season and I just couldn’t get myself to care at all. During the summer I focus on golf and tennis and once football starts baseball is totally dead to me.

October 7th, 2009 at 10:35 AM
i want 7 scoreless from CC tonight.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:36 AM
I hope Zack Miner gets fisted. And I hope it’s with a different team.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:36 AM
I picked this game up in the 10th, but I wasn’t watching it live. I was watching entire Daily Shows / Colberts, and then half innings, fast forwarding between pitches. The half innings were longer than the comedies.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:37 AM
Also. I gotta send some condolences to NDub, GYD, Maggs and tkmsu. Sorry guys, we’ll see ya late in the season next year again I’m sure.
And to one special Tigers fan (you know who you are) suck my fat fucking cock.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:38 AM
That guy is just insufferable.
Cards game starts at 8:30 tonight Busch Standard Time. That means it oughta ends juuuuuuuuuust after midnight.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:41 AM
Nobody’s giving them a chance tonight.
This almost is a guarantee that they will win tonight.

Just after midnight on the west coast. Tony LaRussa is planning on using 17 pitchers.

October 7th, 2009 at 10:44 AM
He did that the last time I saw a Cardinals-Dodgers game at Chavez. On the plus side, I got to duck out early and completely avoid being stabbed in the parking lot.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:45 AM
mrejr you need to get your ass out of bed before quarter til 11. You missed all the fun.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:46 AM
And I’m sorry if this hurts your feeling Dirtheavy, 5 hours for baseball is just too long. Other than playoff games, have you ever seen a 13 inning MLB game with more than 2,000 fans left in the stadium? The mass exodus should tell the sport something: that while people may love the game, there’s massive diminishing returns in interest the longer these events goes.
I just heard Cowherd saying yesterday that unlike football and basketball, baseball doesn’t understand that it’s a TV show. People love sports, but can’t carve out half their day to watch it (although football is different, but it’s on sundays)
October 7th, 2009 at 10:46 AM
wow i guess i do. yahooo needs to pull their heads out of their asses because they still have it as breaking news. fisted assholes.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
The NFL’s rich, old white people > MLB’s rich, old white people
October 7th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
Wow, I don’t even know who you are or who you write for. But if you think you’re taking a “shot” at me b/c I don’t write, you might want to read my blog some more. I make it painfully clear that I don’t give a shit about my blog. So if you think you’re even remotely close to hurting my feelings.. umm.. yeahhh no. If I gave a shit about my blog, I’d probably write on it. Don’t ya think?
But the Opie and Anthony comments are personal.

I think you quit on it, quitter. I think you spend your life being jealous of Tony Reali’s popularity.

This will be remembered TBL when you try and talk coherently on the late night NBA games.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:52 AM
Still recovering. Told my wife to hide all sharp objects last evening.
Cannot believe the game last night. Not sure I’ll be able to watch the Twins play that Yankees tonight. I’ll need at least a few more days.

No argument there. I’m in TV (on the air) and have no problem admitting this. I’m comfortable with where I am. But I honestly don’t think jealousy is a bad thing. It can be a big motivator in life.

From Woodland Hills to Culver City, scorch it all.

TSH – How many times did I tell you NOT to say the AL Central race was over. That the Tigers were a lock? 2 times? 3? 4? Grrr.
I will be burning my ALDS tickets in a ceramonial tribute to what could have been.
October 7th, 2009 at 12:15 PM
I did say that a couple times, but I think it was a bigger mistake to mention in the comments you had purchased your Game 1 ALDS tickets in the middle of such a tight race.
October 7th, 2009 at 12:16 PM
Well….on the bright side….I still don’t live in Cleveland!
Advantage, me.
