Ryan Leaf Continues to Hide Out in Canada. They Love Him Up There.
1-liner, Canada!, Courts, Legal, Former Athletes October 14th. 2009, 12:15pmBritish Columbia Loves Ryan Leaf: The former No. 2 pick in the 1998 draft has found a new home in Canada. The setting is similar to where he grew up in Montana. Currently, he is employed as a sales and marketing associate, making friends and influencing people. In the US, he’s facing eight drug offenses and more than 20 years in jail for the felony burglary charge. “It’s just been a tremendous reception from everyone involved. Not being associated with football, there isn’t the facility for people to criticize, or to come at me from a different angle. I’m the one who controls my celebrity up here, not the sports media down in the States. That’s ultimately what I wanted, and that may be my vacating the football occupation. I miss it in ways, but I haven’t been happier.” [Globe & Mail]

According to the article Canada isn’t doing shit until the plea agreement he’s working on with the Texas D.A. gets done, and they might not do anything even then. I don’t get the hostility, he’s just a kid having fun out there in Canada.

Don’t do criminal stuff, but travel or moving out of the court’s jurisdiction while under bail would probably be at the court’s discretion. If the court believes that he is not a flight risk, and will return for the trial, they would probably allow it. Otherwise, they would have taken his passport. Given his “celebrity,” he’s not really oging to be able to hide. If he doesn’t show, Canada would send him right back, if they know what’s good for them.

So, what’s the message in this article?
British Columbia is a great place to go to run from the law?

Yes, but I’ve have had to sit through more hearings like this than I care to remember. I do civil litigation. Completely different animal.

For Canadian readers and other CFL fans: No worries for Buck Pierce who is great.
Do you think the best quarterback in the CFL now is Pierce, Ray, or Burris?

wan’t he considered a “fugitive” because he took like 2 weeks to leave Canada to appear in Texas in the first place? I seem to remember that

Ryan, now that JaMarcus has supplanted you as the biggest draft bust of all time any shred of notoriety you had has vanished.
