Buzz Bissinger Beats the Other Moneyball Drum
1-liner, Baseball October 20th. 2009, 4:55pmThe Real Moneyball: Because it hasn’t been mentioned enough … “All you need to do is keep in mind one number this postseason: 528,620,438. That’s the amount of money in payroll spent this season by the teams still in it–the New York Yankees, the Los Angeles Angels, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Moneyball? You bet it’s Moneyball, true Moneyball, like it always has been in baseball and always will be.” Couldn’t help but laughing at this line: “The sabermetricians, unloved and unwanted for so long, scorned by the baseball men brotherhood for their nerdy obsessions, fell to their knees like attendees at a revival.” [TNR]

I’m no stathead, but people who look down on those who choose to analyze games and performances from a different approach are pompous know-it-alls, who know a lot less than they think they do.

I will never understand why are sabermetricians seen as ‘the enemy’.

His argument feels flawed. If Billy Beane had money he would absolutely take ARod. He created his Moneyball principals because he had a very limited budget. Why is that so hard to understand?

s1rweeze – that site is bogus. It said thebiglead.com was up and running. That is never the case.

My favorite thing is he credited Mulder, Zito and Hudson for the A’s being close to the top in scoring.

Ricciardi went to the Toronto Blue Jays and was recently fired after eight seasons. He never made the playoffs, a difficult feat to accomplish when you are in the same division as the Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
Buzz needs an editor.
