Steve Phillips Fired by ESPN [UPDATE]
ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings October 25th. 2009, 8:49pm
Steve Phillips, whose affair with ESPN staffer Brooke Hundley was exposed last week, has been fired from ESPN. This email arrived at 8:26 pm from ESPN PR:
Steve Phillips is no longer working for ESPN. His ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged, and it became evident it was time to part ways.
Initial reaction: Steve Phillips was on shaky ground when the story broke Wednesday (if you were out of the country/in a coma, get up to speed here), and we thought he’d survive. But Friday’s revelations that Brooke Hundley filed a restraining order against the Baseball Tonight analyst, combined with the “out-of-court settlement” turned the situation into another Harold Reynolds saga. Phillips is believed to have had two years left on his contract at ESPN.
To those who will ask, “Why fire a guy for sleeping with this chick? Who cares? What does that have to do with his analysis of Joe Girardi’s late-game pitching management?” … here’s a guess:
a) ESPN desperately wants/needs to shake the frat house culture that has become increasingly evident in the last decade
b) The inter-office romances featuring a guy in a position of power (on-air talent) and someone way down the totem pole open the company up to sexual harassment lawsuits.
More reaction tomorrow.
[UPDATE]: According to SI’s Jon Heyman, Steve Phillips has entered some kind of “treatment facility” for “personal issues.” Heyman received a brief statement from Phillips’ agent.

Had to adblock that picture, just too hideous.
October 25th, 2009 at 8:56 PM
David Letterman finds this amusing.
October 25th, 2009 at 8:56 PM
Him, Harold Reynolds and Salisbury should create their own network.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:00 PM
I think the all out assault on ESPN by Deadspin helped seal his fate more than anything in the Hundley clusterfuck.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:01 PM
I lost my wife, i lost my job
October 25th, 2009 at 9:09 PM
He lost his job and his wife (perhaps his kids as well) for a chick that looks like a fucking man.
I wonder how many times he’s going to slap himself over the coming weeks and months.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:09 PM
would any women work at that company?
October 25th, 2009 at 9:09 PM
When Letterman’s jump-off files a restraining order against him and he pays her out-of-court to get it withdrawn …

If only there were a little imaginary man holding this sign that appeared when you were undoing your pants, right?
October 25th, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Turned out to be an expensive peice of fat ass. Might I suggest Ruth Chris next time Mr. Phillips.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Phillips and Salisbury would win the tag belts if they were managed by Jimmy Hart.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:11 PM
If only there were a little imaginary man holding this sign that appeared when you were undoing your pants, right?
Well I mean, a sign wouldn’t even be needed. Look at that chick!

He’ll be a suicide victim w/in 60 days MAX
October 25th, 2009 at 9:14 PM
I’m not judging. I’ve had about 15 cheap domestic bears over the past 18 hours. Obviously, I’m not the person to be extoling the virtuous life to anyone.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:14 PM
crazy shit
October 25th, 2009 at 9:14 PM
Like the old joke says, she is the moped, but not only do your friends notice, but so does the whole world. If i were Phillips i would come out and say i was a chubby chaser. At this point, you might as well act like you enjoyed pumping a hippo
October 25th, 2009 at 9:14 PM
man, i hope not. that shits sad to think about
October 25th, 2009 at 9:16 PM
I would never throw my dick in this broad, but i guess if i was a bottle of jack, in a dark room, everyone passed out, and she promised to be out by 5:30 a.m…….I’d let her blow me.

October 25th, 2009 at 9:18 PM
we’ve all made mistakes that we’ll take to the grave.
of this caliber? probably not.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:20 PM
At my college newspaper we had a newsclerk (girl) that we (the editors) shared. She was not a 10. That’s all I’m going to say. But I had five spins on that tilt-a-whirl.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:20 PM
I’m just sayin’, what crime did Steve Phillips commit?
I’m all for executives deciding what’s best for the company, and he probably deserved to get shitcanned.
But all the idiots (Dan LeBatard) who claim Roger Goodell unfairly punishes (not terminates) his employees who commit actual crimes should be the first people standing up in Phillips’ defense.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:23 PM
I smell a lawsuit against ESPN here…
October 25th, 2009 at 9:23 PM
You shouldn’t risk more than 10% of your bankroll at one time, money management is as important as picking correctly when it comes to gambling.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:23 PM
+5
October 25th, 2009 at 9:23 PM
aint gonna happen. phillips is rich(probably not for long) and white(no matter how much fake tan he puts on).
October 25th, 2009 at 9:23 PM
I wish TBL could be representative of America. I’m basically a liberal hippy, and MikeNYC and JPQ are probably two of my favorite commenters, even if their political views aren’t aligned with my own.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:24 PM
10%?
More like 4%.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:25 PM
Didnt you just answer your own question here? Bad publicity. This thing is never, ever going to go away.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:25 PM
Oh gee, thanks BSanders. For what it’s worth, you crack my Top 5 as well.
/man hug
October 25th, 2009 at 9:26 PM
You know it had to be bad if ESPN is firing one of their big baseball analysts right before the World Series starts.
Now why can’t some big girl take a bullet for all of America and do this to Chris Berman??
October 25th, 2009 at 9:26 PM
Aaaand players in the NFL aren’t rich, and are all black?
October 25th, 2009 at 9:27 PM
If only the Leather girl would come forward..
October 25th, 2009 at 9:27 PM
I will just be waiting with bated breath to see all those who come to his defense.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:28 PM
something’s telling me there’s probably a clause about having affairs/relationships with farm animals within the workplace.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:28 PM

October 25th, 2009 at 9:29 PM
Pretty sure Donte Stallworth is Finnish.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:30 PM
what crime?
ask his lawyer – or whomever negotiated his “settlement” with the chick so that his restraining order would be withdrawn.
once you stick it in, you might as well get a blank check ready.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:30 PM
i know the increase in white tightends in the nfl has made it seem like there are a lot of white dudes in the nfl and the last few nfl players to get punished by goodell have been white but im gonna go ahead and say the majority of nfl players are black. sound good?
October 25th, 2009 at 9:30 PM
Alright, time to let the computer call balls and strikes.

he’s radioactive.
things that’ll happen before someone defends him
- JaMarcus Russell throws a TD pass
- Rams win a game
October 25th, 2009 at 9:34 PM
Mike, you dont think Lebatard would come to Phillips’ defense? I think he probably would cry foul, but then he might be ordered not comment on it, so, we’d never know.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:35 PM
Goddell’s methods are used to deter and not prevent millionaire babies from acting like jackasses off the field.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:36 PM
I will just be waiting with bated breath to see all those who come to his defense.
Phillips? Think Kate Winslet letting go of Leo in Titantic in the ocean. He’s already half-way down.
thx bsanders: You know I’m less Conservative than most people think on here (especially socially)
October 25th, 2009 at 9:37 PM
This is not really relational at all. A restraining order — which I could get against you, tomorrow — does not mean any crime was necessarily committed.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:38 PM
I’m surprised that…anyone would be the least bit surprised that Phillips would get shit-canned for this.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:39 PM
I guess that’s what I’m curious to see. If he does, then I take back all the mean things I’ve said about him.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:39 PM
This is not really relational at all. A restraining order — which I could get against you, tomorrow — does not mean any crime was necessarily committed.
Mike: he may have had a “morals clause” in his contract (especially after the Mets deal) that allowed ESPN to fire him w/ cause for “fraternizing with fellow employees”
October 25th, 2009 at 9:39 PM
He made his employer look stupid, grounds enough for firing.
Your analogy with Goodell is a little off. He doesn’t cut the players checks, the team owners do. The players work for their owners, not for Goodell and in fact Goodell works for the owners too. If the team owner doesn’t find the crime to be worth a suspension than I don’t think it should be up to Goodell. His decisions have the ability to affect the outcomes of games. The commissioners office shouldn’t have the power to suspend people based on how they feel about the situation and the player. There should be a set criteria league wide for suspensions that everyone knows and understands ensuring everyone gets the same suspensions for the same crimes. Not one guy playing judge and jury.
Having said all that I do like Goodell, and at least he’s trying to do something to clean up the players off the field bullshit. But setting some kind of tangible standards would be best.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:42 PM
And, I think the restraining order probably didn’t motivate ESPN any more or less in their decision. SP obviously was sleeping with a subordinate and it became public knowledge. Considering what they just went through with Reynolds and Salisbury (not to mention the whispers about Tirico and others) there was no way they could not terminate Phillips.
Don’t forget, as sordid as ESPN can be, at the end of the day they are Disney’s bitch.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:43 PM
normally wouldn’t put it on anywhere, but i took a pounding last weekend, and the account was low enough that i went all in. a loss tonight and i’ll have one of two choices – wait for futures to hit (could be awhile) or replenish the account for the first time in two years.
hate the idea of replenishing … IMO, admitting defeat.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:43 PM
Although, maybe by the beginning of the 2010 season this has blown over enough that the MLB network hires him, him and Harold together again.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:43 PM
Count me in the surprised camp. Unlike other businesses, these guys are under contract for guaranteed amounts of money, much like baseball players are. ESPN has to not only eat his contract, but continue to deal with the PR mishaps.
Keeping him employed after a leave of absence doesn’t really hurt ESPN. They still have to pay him but at least he provides a service for them. Plus, baseball season is almost over. There’s bound to be another scandal in the sporting world in the next few months. Remember when we were talking about Rick Pitino? How many of us have all but swept that under the rug?
Bottom line… Phillips did not break a law.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:44 PM
he does work for the owners and the owners gave him the power to do what he has been doing so i think you could say he is doing it in their names.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:44 PM
Goodell is the CEO of the NFL. The powers that his office holds are not by accident.
For the record: I agree Phillips deserved to be fired.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:45 PM
not condoning phillips’ actions in any way, however, i would think hundley would get the boot before phillips.
she went mental that put a co-worker’s family in danger, enough that they had to call 911.
to me, that’s a little more sick than what phillips did. and let’s be honest, it took two to tango and it sure didn’t seem she was forced into anything given her actions.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:46 PM
LeBatard is the ultimate apologist for bad behavior of athletes. Again, are we to be shocked that he is so stridently anti-Goodell? At least Goodell is making an attempt to rid his league of human debris. Pac Man would still be hooping it up in the NBA.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:47 PM
i think joe buck has tried to give jeter a beej atleast once
October 25th, 2009 at 9:47 PM
SC – How do you know ESPN has to eat his contract? Don’t you think when they signed him, there was some kind of clause in there considering his past history (banging secretary on the mets)?
even if there was no clause, each company has sexual harassment guideless that must be followed. and the fact that she brought a restraining order against him, and then they settled out of court so it would be withdrawn, is completely grounds for dismissal.
all a jilted chick has to say: “The first time we slept together, he promised me this. Then he said this.” and SP is f’d.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:47 PM
/Hakeem Nicks?

October 25th, 2009 at 9:48 PM
The contract is peanuts, relatively speaking. And, the PR hit will be far less as Phillips disappears into the abyss.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:48 PM
Damon comes through. how clutch of him!
October 25th, 2009 at 9:48 PM
Didnt Birdman get kicked out of the NBA for 2 years?
October 25th, 2009 at 9:50 PM
He was obviously terminated for cause, the same reason Al Davis used for canning Kiffin while saying he didn’t have to pay the rest of his contract.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:50 PM
whoever said “PR mishaps” is on the money as well. i put together a list last week, and i had totally forgotten some folks.
any mis-step gets massive play on the internet – hell, the Phillips story spent a day at the top of the USA Today sports page online – and there seems to be one every few months.
i think the firing is also a subtle message to everyone else that this kind of crap wont be tolerated anymore
October 25th, 2009 at 9:51 PM
So Mccarver would take Saunders out and put a rookie in with bases loaded, AROD up in game 6 of the ALCS???
October 25th, 2009 at 9:52 PM
I don’t condone his actions, but from a strictly business standpoint, I don’t think it makes sense for ESPN. Even if they don’t have to pay him the whole remainder on his contract, I guarantee he gets a portion of it. A severance if you will.
Otherwise, his agent is not a very good one. Phillips gets to descend into obscurity a la McGwire/Palmiero did after their baseball disasters while ESPN is left to pick up the pieces.
I would have to guess there will be major changes in the hiring practices at ESPN from here on out. The talent managers or hiring managers have to be held at fault for some of this. This is no longer just an isolated incident, but rather a trend. A trend that has to be addressed before it starts affecting profitability.
Spoken like a true conservative, right? Guess I’m more JPQ/Mike than BSanders when it comes to finances.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:52 PM
Can’t they can that fatass Kruk for molesting the snack bar?
October 25th, 2009 at 9:53 PM
I see you are occupied with other topics, but I guess I’ll be the first to say it:
HAKEEM NICKS!
October 25th, 2009 at 9:54 PM
What exactly is ESPN losing by firing Philips?
October 25th, 2009 at 9:54 PM
if ESPN is eating his contract, they might be more afraid of what’s not been revealed.
And just because he committed no crime doesn’t mean he can’t get fired.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:54 PM
As for real sports… I want the Yankees to win but, where the hell did that Saunders 3-1 pitch to ARod miss?
That was a strike.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:55 PM
did you hear that? Thats the sound of flood games opening.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:55 PM
WOW. What a bullshit ball 4 call.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:56 PM
No Kzone on that pitch? Suspicious.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:56 PM

October 25th, 2009 at 9:56 PM

October 25th, 2009 at 9:56 PM

October 25th, 2009 at 9:56 PM
That ball 4 has been called a strike all game so far.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:57 PM
No fucking way was it that far off, fix your kzone homo.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:58 PM
Man if this were game six of an NFL series, no way is that call made.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:58 PM
Money. And a mediocre at best analyst. It’s not like losing Harold Reynolds who knew what he was talking about and is generally liked. Still, they now have to replace him with someone.
The average cost of hiring an employee in the entertainment/television industry was around $50,000 in 2008. I can only imagine that price has gone up.
Many people will say $50,000 is chump change for ESPN. It’s still $50K. Plus, what if the next guy doesn’t work out? This is going to end up costing ESPN a lot of money no matter what.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:58 PM
I’m no lip reader, but I’m pretty sure that Arod just said that ball was a strike while talking to his first base coach.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:59 PM
The prob with KZONE is it shows where the ball hits the mitt correct?
The strike/ball is supposed to be called where it crosses the plate.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:59 PM
CLUTCH GEORGE
October 25th, 2009 at 10:00 PM
Steve Phillips probably made $50k every two months.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:00 PM
With the sheer number of ESPN analysts why would they have to hire anybody to take SP place?
October 25th, 2009 at 10:01 PM
not trying to be a dick, but, depending on not only CT state laws but also ESPN’s employment agreement, it isn’t as easy to fire him as you guys are saying. As I said above, he may have had a morals clause that precluded him from any relationship with a fellow employee.
If there was no morals clause and they terminate him, he can sue for discrimination if he can show the same thing happened in another instance and ESPN didnn’t fire the person.
I’ve been hiring and firing people for 20 years, and it can sometimes be easy, be hard, or be impossible, depending on the state, situation, company
October 25th, 2009 at 10:01 PM
To be more clear, that $50K number is the cost of the actual hiring process, not the compensation for the person hired.
H/T to my former employer for that bit of otherwise useless info.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:01 PM
This development was the icing on the cake of last week’s report of success well ahead of schedule of Stage 1 of The Mission after the exposed gullibility and inherent lack of credibility in the mainstream media from the Heene affair.
Notice how they tried to bury this news on a busy sports Sunday, but that olde ploy won’t work because TBL Godfather will fan its flames come Monday.
That’s also why he is The Godfather.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:02 PM

I’m curious how close this ALCS game will be in the ratings to the clunker of a SNF game.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:05 PM
The Halloween office episode should be pretty good, as it looks like the costumes will be apart of the episode instead of just the opening credits.

October 25th, 2009 at 10:07 PM

October 25th, 2009 at 10:08 PM
So who is excited for 2012? Besides TBL.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:08 PM
How do ratings work anyway? Im switching between the football and baseball game and probably watching 50/50 of them both. How does that get figured?

You don’t matter unless you are in a Nielsen family.
And they do monitor who, what, and how much of whatever you watch.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:10 PM
Sorry, meant the horrible movie coming out (preview during the last commercial break).
October 25th, 2009 at 10:10 PM
@CJ – I know for Nielson, that they actually have boxes placed in the homes of people to determine what is being watched. I asked that same question a few weeks back and by magic of the internet, I actually learned something new.
I couldn’t find out how many “Nielson families” there were/are, but I know that’s how they calculate ratings.

haha, to each their own moleman, but they’re usually pretty spot on with their pop culture references in regards to Halloween. Dwight as the Emperor Palpatine a couple years back was fantastic.
/the show peaked for me in the 2nd and 3rd seasons, though its still better than 90 percent of the crap still on
October 25th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Nothing real this weekend due to the heebie-jeebies this time of year, but true to their word a few days ago a few guys on here made some easy NFL money. I cancelled my TCU/BYU O50 when I saw the line going up and could not get 50.
One NFL paper bet, Houston, pushed at -3. Only 11-13-2 on the year for the NFL and in the loss column for paper too.
Excellent college weekend at 6-2 and 40-27-2 on the year on paper.
Up for real for college at 5-2, down for real NFL at 2-4, -$10 overall, and damn I miss all those free drinks in Las Vegas.
I will probably hold off after that run even on paper until resuming all bets for rivalry weeks starting in three weeks in college and until the playoffs for the NFL.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:12 PM
couldnt these people be bought by the networks to boost or nullify ratings?
October 25th, 2009 at 10:13 PM

so next year we are gonna have soccer shoved down our throats? great.i cant wait.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:16 PM
It’s not a concept that lends itself to as many seasons as they’ve had and it’ll never reach the near-perfection the British Office managed, but NBC needs it too badly to worry about quality at this point. It needs the ratings like a hooker needs NBC to have HPV.com sponsoring its HULU offerings.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:16 PM
its definitely a young person show, i tried to get my parents to watch, they couldnt get thru it either

Don’t worry mre, the USA will get bounced in the first round, people stop talking about it after that.

JPQ my brother is an HR guy like you but with only 6 years experience. Hey did you enjoy the trip otherwise? That game sucked overall.
My damn internet went out along with my satellite TV in the 4th quarter yesterday due in part to the storms, with the internet only restored tonight. I saw what was ultimately the last score of the game before that all happened though, but I did not know who won for like hours after I fell asleep.
I am not happy with my Irish’s performance because they did not convert 5 turnovers into more points. This is not good football.
All the same of course I am thrilled to be rid of this BC jinx hanging over our heads for 6 years running and to be able to get on my alumna sister’s case.

I think this has been the best season since 2 or 3
October 25th, 2009 at 10:17 PM
A show about middle aged people in shitty mid management jobs is for kids?
October 25th, 2009 at 10:17 PM
hey tbl. anything you can do about the autoplay ad? it is like a goddamn unstoppable robot. a female robot who is either shitting or throwing up.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:18 PM
well now you know its not that you’re un-hip or anything.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:19 PM
What a crap show. Not that I am curious, but it was telling that no one came on here to talk about what was likely a cheeseball crap wedding episode after-the-fact. That show has sucked ever since it came back from the writers’ strike in early 2008. I think the only people who like it now are those folks who were Friends diehards and fans. Whyyyte people.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:20 PM
Yeah seriously…this doesn’t sound very legit.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:20 PM
JPQ my brother is an HR guy like you but with only 6 years experience. Hey did you enjoy the trip otherwise? That game sucked overall.
hey Paolo: I’ve been in Sales Mgmt for a long time, not HR, but you need to know the rules when you wanna can someone. I have also spent a few nights at a Holiday Inn Express
Had to cancel the ND trip at the last minute. Some personal stuff came up. Glad the Irish were able to pull it out.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:20 PM
Actually agree completely with this.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:20 PM
There are lots of blogs out there by people who used to be in Neilsen households, interesting reads.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:21 PM
mikenyc – good economic article coming tomorrow. you gonna be around between 8-915?
October 25th, 2009 at 10:22 PM
I disagree, Sir. I am neither white nor a Friends fan. The wedding was a great episode, especially after everything that has occured since the beginning.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:22 PM
if it could arrested development would still be on. but then again so would knight rider. or any other show that was shitty.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:23 PM
Arrested development was pretty good. You just don’t like it because there were no monster trucks.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:24 PM
You don’t need Nielsen ratings to tell us what Mike Patrick knows to be Dogma: Kellsey Grammer is the funniest comedic actor in Christendom.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:25 PM

October 25th, 2009 at 10:25 PM
I’ll try, TBL — it’s extremely difficult to comment on blogs at the new gig.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:26 PM
this home plate umpire sucks
October 25th, 2009 at 10:26 PM
Pretty good? Come on, now. That’s like saying Citizen Kane doesn’t suck dick…
October 25th, 2009 at 10:27 PM
Joba is nowhere near good enough to be superstitious about not changing hats.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:27 PM
yup you live in kentucky. ok im gonna break it down for you teletubby level. i was saying that arrested development was good and if the ratings could be bought by the networks they would have done that so they could have made money from advertising. i was saying that the same would have happened for shit shows like knight rider. ok? goooood.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:28 PM
Someone needs to let Girardi know that Joba isn’t the best option after Rivera
October 25th, 2009 at 10:28 PM
see UPDATE on Phillips above.
some type of “treatment facility” for “personal issues”
October 25th, 2009 at 10:29 PM
This is not more crap masquerading as financial news for tomorrow from the WSJ, Faux News, CNBC, or the GOP is it?
JPQ:
Yes indeed. I have been on both sides of the HR matters as an employee, and I am 2-1 with unemployment battles and many thousands of dollars ahead. If you did not quit and were fired without any serious specified cause in PA and need an attorney to get what is due you, let me know anyone.
JPQ as a sales manager would be the best boss I think with the best rewards for parties and the like I would hope.
I am not an actor, but I do play one in real life and have been known to wear an occasional disguise as well as to evade vehicular surveillance.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:29 PM
He went to David Duchovny’s rehab center, I see…
October 25th, 2009 at 10:29 PM
The best laid plans … sometimes don’t work.
Steinbeck could not have said it better himself.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
um if AD was Citizen Kane level good (which im sure you know is best ever) i doubt it would have been cancelled. i liked the show but lets not get carried away.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
I believe I was first in the “Duchovny” excuse pool a few days back.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
mrejr, I thought you were lumping arrested development in with Knight rider in terms of quality. No reason to get your Hogan undies in a twist ha.
And yes I live in kentucky. I also graduated from college. i may be wasting my degree right now but it doesn’t make me stupid haha.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:31 PM
Get an arm up Girardi. Andy starting to lose command a bit here.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:31 PM
troof
October 25th, 2009 at 10:32 PM
Disregard! Nice performance by Pettite tonight. I asked via Twi++er, but I’ll ask here..
Pettite has neither a Cy Young nor 300 wins, but if he gets 6 more wins he’ll have 250 and 4 WS titles. Maybe 5 after this year. Is a HoF?
Similar to the Schilling argument.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:32 PM
I dunno, the whole “best” vs. “favorite” argument is hard with me. Is Citizen Kane the “best” movie ever made? Maybe. Is AD the best scripted comedy ever made? Maybe. I’d still rather watch Gattaca and Freaks and Geeks over both.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:33 PM
Citizen Kane is honestly one of my favorite movies until it all starts to go wrong for him, I can’t describe it but I feel like it gets incredibly slow and drawn out.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:33 PM
just joshing your taters. i make fun of my cousins for being from their just to get them riled up. figured i would do the same to you
October 25th, 2009 at 10:34 PM
I still haven’t seen Citizen Kane. For my money, LoA is the best movie ever made, but not my favorite.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:34 PM
I don’t even follow baseball anymore but there is a 0% chance Pettite make the HOF.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:34 PM
SC: I won’t answer for fear of getting punched in the face round these parts.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:34 PM
its going down on Mad Men tonight!
October 25th, 2009 at 10:36 PM
I’m the biggest yankee homer here, and I don’t think he gets in.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:37 PM
Pettitte a HOFer? Of course not.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:37 PM
I don’t even follow baseball anymore but there is a 0% chance Pettite make the HOF.
I’d put it at 10%, but agree he ain’t going in. If he played on the Astros for 15 years, nobody would give a shit that he even existed
October 25th, 2009 at 10:37 PM
it is widely considered to be and it is all tied together by his goddamn sled. get the man his sled for fucks sake! sled. AD only tops lists like “best to get cancelled”. like i said i like ad but im sure after 5 years it would have lost steam and gotten old. being cancelled after 3 years is the best thing to happen to that show.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:37 PM
There are fewer problems than folks think can’t be solved after you have had a fine rack of real soft hooters shoved in your face in a strip bar in Indiana, where such touching is in fact legal even where alcohol is served. But those bottoms stay on there damnit.
Oh yeah they might be all nude in Las Vegas or in Atlanta and the hottest in Las Vegas, but no touching allowed unless of course you (usually your dumb ass) decide(s) to be shaken down.
Anyway, the point stands that many problems are solved with a fine new set of healthy hooters in your face. I approve of this message.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:38 PM
Congratulations! You win a free punch to the face. The answer is no, no chance in hell.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:38 PM
What does LoA stand for (I know I’ll kick myself later)? I’d probably say Angels in America is my favorite artistic achievement ever, other than maybe the novel Empire Falls.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:38 PM
until pete rose gets in no one gets in.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
lawrence of arabia
October 25th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
This home plate umpire is horrible.
Tim McCarver just gave Jeter the “gritty AB” compliment there. Maybe he’ll fall out of the booth like that guy at the Chargers game last week.
/going to hell
October 25th, 2009 at 10:39 PM
wouldnt have won 4 WS (maybe 5?) if he did that either
October 25th, 2009 at 10:40 PM
You guys are fucking nuts, most wins of anyone from 1995-2010, and a Yankee? I wouldn’t be so confident. Any other team, no fucking way.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:40 PM
Ok, so the two Vikings fans say no.
Rational people also say no. Was just wondering.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:40 PM
Which is exactly why that is irrelevant when talking about the HOF
October 25th, 2009 at 10:40 PM
if Andy Pettite gets into the hall of Fame with a career ERA of 4 I refuse to take the Hall seriously ever again.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:41 PM
Ah, yeah, I get that, then.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:41 PM
Boom. Remember, we don’t vote for the hall. I think when his name comes up, more than enough people will lobby for him.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
Pitchers with similar careers to Pettite: Jimmy Key, Bob Welch, Kevin Brown.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
I’ll agree with that
October 25th, 2009 at 10:42 PM
so anyone still watching heroes? i never watched it but i feel like i missed out on the first year and now it has lost it’s “creative direction”
October 25th, 2009 at 10:43 PM
Curt Schilling would have you shot for less. At the very least, he’d give you a smarmy tongue lashing.
C’mon guys. This is the BBWAA were talking about. There are people who didn’t vote for Rickey Henderson but voted for Mark McGwire.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:43 PM
I don’t think he is as deserving as others, but I for sure wouldnt be pissed if he got in.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:43 PM
Citizen Kane, Raging Bull, Lawrence of Arabia, Marty, Godfather.
Not in that order
October 25th, 2009 at 10:44 PM
That.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:44 PM
I’d put it at 10%, but agree he ain’t going in. If he played on the Astros for 15 years, nobody would give a shit that he even existed
wouldnt have won 4 WS (maybe 5?) if he did that either
sponge: exactly my point. A lot of pitchers pitched in anonymity and were better . He’s a really good pitcher, but not a HOF.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:45 PM
John Daly’s new avatar makes me appreciate John Daly even more.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Marty? Come on, get some Strangers on a Train up in that business. Some George Washingon while you’re at it.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Wow Cardinals are really giving the Giants a game. Interception by Cardinals after tipped ball. Too bad that rain stopped for the Giants, who are not a come-from-behind team either.
Beanie Wells (yes, that’s him) with a good run up the middle!
/Don’t Really Care About Baseball Unless The Yankees Lose, As Is Likely Not To Happen Yet
October 25th, 2009 at 10:45 PM
I watched the first season and enjoyed it, but haven’t watched since then, got the feeling they only thought of stories for one season and were panicking after that. Ala the Matrix.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
Yea I really dont know what I was pointing out there, I dont think Pettite should be in
October 25th, 2009 at 10:46 PM
He also has the same reaction when you say Checker’s is better than hardy’s.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:47 PM
there has never been a unanimous vote getter to get in the HOF. that little bnugget should be proof that the BBWAA are a bunch of homer douchebags who should not have voting rights. let living hall of famers do it or something. but writers? no.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:47 PM
Never saw/heard of Strangers On A Train.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:48 PM
this bothers the fuck out of me.

But we played sub-par overall but at least did not turnover the ball.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:49 PM
Rent it/Love it

Strangers On A Train.
shatner: it was a remix of Strangers in the Night and Throw Momma from the Train
OWENNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
October 25th, 2009 at 10:49 PM
Josh Gibson and Cool papa bell, unless I’m missing something.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:50 PM
i think pettite taking hgh will hurt his chances
October 25th, 2009 at 10:50 PM
Look what you did, you clumsy poop!
October 25th, 2009 at 10:51 PM
Which Boston writer voted against Jackie Robinson?
October 25th, 2009 at 10:52 PM
cena won the title setting up the cena/triple h feud like i said. the smackdown team won after big show turned on the raw team and chokeslammed kofi. the miz beat morrison. taker won and batista turned heel by beating the shit out of mysterio.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:52 PM
Win is a win is a win. ND 23 in BCS… looking forward is dumb but… they need to win at Pitt for this season to have anything resembling a success. Pitt is going to be Charlie’s chance to have the book on him catch some good editing.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:52 PM
shatner: that and What About Bob? should be on everyone’s comedy bucket list. So forgotten and so underrated compared to the garbage they release now
October 25th, 2009 at 10:52 PM
Holy fuck Andy Pettite looks like Harvey Fierstein.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:52 PM
Oh, now I remember Strangers on a train. I just looked uop the description. I have to check that out.

October 25th, 2009 at 10:53 PM
Joba in? Marte warming up? What the fuck!!
October 25th, 2009 at 10:53 PM
Joba doesn’t really come set. Every time he delivers, it’s basically a balk. Never noticed that before.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:53 PM
mrejr: Technically that’s not true. Cool Papa Bell and one other person, can’t remember, got elected 100%, but it was via some special negro leagues committee, so those don’t count.
Every great player had someone have a reason for leaving them off though. People didn’t vote Ty Cobb in cause he was the biggest asshole of all time, Ruth cause he was a drunk/womanizer and struck out too much. About the only person I’ve never figured out a reason why is Honus Wagner. He might be the 2nd best player ever
October 25th, 2009 at 10:54 PM

October 25th, 2009 at 10:57 PM
ok but the people who have had to go through normal voting has never been voted in unanimously right? ok so im still right.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:58 PM
I said Phillips would be fired and for none of the reason’s anyone mentioned. NONE OF YOU RESPECT HIM NOW (even more so then when baseabll knowledge was the requirement). He was never going to be able to do his job again, and so had to be fired.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:58 PM
The man won’t let me play in MLB either, I should get in.
If Ty Cobb didn’t get a unanimous vote, nobody should.

Billy Wilder
Cinematic mastery.
/Billy Wilder
October 25th, 2009 at 10:59 PM
I love his style. his timing was perfect and he usually played the straight man to Walter Matthaeu’s louse. I don’t really like Wedding Crashers or anything like that because the jokes are too lazy.
Although I like Anchorman haha.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:00 PM
Does GM seriously think they’re going to sell cars by telling people they’re better than Japanese cars? People aren’t stupid when it comes to buying cars, they know you have an inferior product. Walmart sells inferior products too, and they kill, by selling it cheaper. Until you become the American Daewoo, gtfo.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:01 PM
bsanders: I knew you were a big Billy Wilder fan. Me too. I hate 99% of the movies today. No stories and all CGI

Mole – In the short term, they are generally better than foreign cars. After 5 years or so, probably not so much.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:04 PM
It’s a punchline for athletes to have massive webs of chicks they fuck on the side, but we lose respect for the guy who talks about those dudes for doing the same? Nah.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:04 PM
Glengarry Glen Ross was a great flick in terms of seeing some great acting. I thought Alec Baldwin was great in that beginning monologue, as well as Lemmon, Kevin Spacey and others (Pacino was a little over the top for me in the 2nd half, as he usually is)
October 25th, 2009 at 11:05 PM
If you ever get a chance, read Conversations With Wilder. Cameron Crowe did a series of interviews with Wilder and compiled it all. It’s one of my favorite books.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:06 PM
To be fair, I didn’t respect him before it came out that he was having sex with Rocky Dennis.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:06 PM

I’ll make a point to get it. Thx.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:08 PM
Billy Wilder was great because he could do it all and he had only a fungible understanding of our society, yet he captured it perfectly. The Apartment, Sunset Blvd., Double Indemnity, Ace in the Hole…if any director today even approached that kind of versatility we’d be falling at their feet.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:10 PM
Haven’t seen a single Billy Wilder movie, suck on it old people and film snobs.

is there a person here who wouldn’t hit the button in that new Cameron Diaz movie? I’d push my father out of the way and hit the button 50 times.

If a dude cheated on his wife with a faggot because she was his beard all along, I sure as fuck would not trust him with his job either and move on and let those chips fall where they may on someone else’s plate. Fuck that.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:16 PM
What a play by Tex.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:17 PM

Is there ANY question that Mariano Rivera is the best player to play for the Yankees in the last 15 years?
Dude single handedly makes every Yankee playoff game a 7 inning game. It’s utterly ridiculous and something that doesn’t come close to getting the attention that it should.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:20 PM
it said someone you don’t know will die. huddle your family up

Insurance run is almost a must have in the bottom half of this inning.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:23 PM
Trust = Would Not Watch in this context either. What’s the point with so many media alternatives to put up with such a douchebag? Ultimately ESPN is making the right decision to rid themselves of this and other distractions to their programming.
Regular folks want just the sports coverage not the sideshow drama despite what the uppity East Coast snoots and ninnies think.
Discussion? Most guys would say, “Fuck that just talk sports damnit. I don’t watch sports on TV because I want to hear someone who sounds like my in-law female relative, wife, and/or girlfriend or any of their “cute” or “controversial” stories not about sports.”
They’ll never get this on ESPN and in many suburban and uppity urban circles, but TBL Godfather has gotten it from day one. Again that’s why he’s the Godfather and the Mission will only accelerate.

October 25th, 2009 at 11:31 PM
YES. I hate the Giants.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:31 PM
How the fuck is that the game changing play? Figgins still scored… and A-Rod’s ball 4 is the reason the Yankees have 4 runs.
Which, again, was NOT a ball. Clearly a strike.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:31 PM
Fuck. I hate the Giants.

Would Collinsworth have pointed out that Eli’s “Omaha” is the live snap call out if it were Tom Brady? Probably not, said the guy who pulled on Tom Brady’s jersey as his “player of the game” before the coin toss of a game in which Brady threw four picks.

HAHAHAHAHA NICE THROW PUSSY!
October 25th, 2009 at 11:35 PM
Gotta love how people change one play and assume everything after would still be played out the same.
I caught ESPN this morning and they did some kind of horseshit “If miami drafted Drew Brees” instead of Jamar Fletcher, Saban never leaves Miami, Cameron never gets hired and fired, Parcells goes to Atlanta, Jake Long isn’t available and is drafted by the Ray-Ders, yada, yada, yada.
I turned it off it was so fucking ridiculous
October 25th, 2009 at 11:36 PM
Explain to me how Cano’s play matters. Figgins scored. On a hit in the FOLLOWING at bat.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:36 PM
To stay out of a 4th double play? Have you been watching this game in the least?
October 25th, 2009 at 11:37 PM
Well, I guess I’d better put my “Ryan Howard is good” cap on.

Fucking Eli. Thanks for blowing my teaser you pussy.

The Angels lost this series in the first two games when they played like the LA Raiders did against the Bills in the AFC Title game in 1991 (51-3). The Raiders were beaten when they landed on Friday for a Sunday afternoon game.

When I heard this tool say that, I wondered how he gets away with that as an announcer bound by contracts to be neutral in his coverage of the game? Doesn’t this give an undue advantage to the opposition? I wonder if there will be a story break about a reprimand for him on this.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:42 PM

October 25th, 2009 at 11:47 PM
Thought that ball was gone.
I thought for sure he was hitting into a DP prior to the AB. Rivera on the bench here for about 25 minutes getting cold. Bet Girardi considers getting someone up in the pen. It’s a lose/lose though. If they lose, he takes the fall for leaving him in/taking him out.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:48 PM
Okay, okay. For what it’s worth, I don’t think any team in the AFC could beat the Colts, Pats, Steelers or Ravens if any of those four were playing the NFC rep in the Super Bowl this Sunday. The NFC sucks.

*In the NFC, I mean
/The NFC sucks
October 25th, 2009 at 11:51 PM
The AFC playoffs could be a real bitch come January. The league is very top heavy, but those teams are all really good.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:51 PM
I was meh on the Colts after about week 3, thinking they were propped up solely by Peyton. I would like to think I was wrong, that they are just a good fucking team. I love Peyton. I hope they win the SB this year in a good game against maybe the Saints or Giants
October 25th, 2009 at 11:53 PM
damn it Posada, you’ve been shit all game.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:54 PM

October 25th, 2009 at 11:55 PM
I gotta say, all this Peyton love coming out of the woodwork this year is pretty cool. The guy has probably strung together the best seven-year stretch of football the NFL will ever see, but better late than never. And, just for the record, Tom Brady is an awesome football player and I’d take him as my QB any day if Peyton, Unitas or Elway weren’t available (and Montana’s elbow was sore).
October 25th, 2009 at 11:57 PM
damn it Posada, you’ve been shit all game
Posada is such a dickwad. He’s “offended” with the catching situation and being pulled. Didn’t the same thing happen w/ him and Girardi when they started winning WS in the 90’s, but he was the guy being put in???
October 25th, 2009 at 11:59 PM
bsanders: I’ve always been a Peyton fan on here. I like him more than Brady, always have, and always will. And I love Polian, who should get in the HOF in a walk, if the voters have any sense. Fuck Bobby Beatherd, Ernie Accorsi and George Young
/but Jim Kelly is still my all-time favorite QB. Gotta!
October 26th, 2009 at 12:01 AM
The thing about that is Molina is a shitty defensive player and there’s no evidence that he calls a better game than Posada. AJ just don’t like posada and blames everyone else but himself.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:01 AM
I would just like to say this — FUCK YES!
October 26th, 2009 at 12:02 AM
Yanks in the WS!! WOOO!

Wow. World Series is going to be incredible this year. Should be an outstanding series.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:02 AM
I gotta admit, Mo’s slow fist pump/walk to home plate was pretty cool. “Yeah that’s right, I’m awesome.”

October 26th, 2009 at 12:07 AM
Again, much like the ALCS, Yanks must have first two in New York to win the series.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:09 AM
Yankees are more traditional than an inter-office affair, JPQ. They both have the same amount of historical significance though.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:12 AM

Bsanders, you tried to sneak another Unitas-stroke in back there aways. C;mon, dude. Immobile as a pigeon-shit-stained park statue. Sure, yeah, tough, buzzcut, steely nerves, but I’ll take Staubach, for one off the top, over Unitas.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:22 AM

shatner: Jeter, Posada, and Joba, in that order. The rest of them are all right, I guess. Those 90’s teams I despised with O’Neill, Brosius, Leyritz, etc. Every one of them I wanted to give a wood shampoo to like Pesci got in Casino

GSG, that would make me a swingin’ dick!
October 26th, 2009 at 12:31 AM
Seriously, though, Unitas was the shit. Staubach’s great and all, for sure better than Bradshaw. Actually, way better than Bradshaw. Incredibly better than Bradshaw, but Unitas was IT. Watch some game films of Unitas and you’ll see how he controlled the game. His connection with Raymond Berry might’ve been better than Manning to Harrison – and they were both white!
October 26th, 2009 at 12:35 AM
“Johnny Unitas! Now there’s a haircut you can set your watch to!”
October 26th, 2009 at 12:36 AM
bsanders, i won’t take this too far–you;re wrong!
kidding. I know he was good, but I can’t erase the different eras/better athletes context from things like this. there were some mad slingers from unitas through today–lamonica, gabriel, brodie, tarkenton, etc. raymond berry=that broncos white guy from the 90s who was so fast and good and broke his leg (you know who i mean)
October 26th, 2009 at 12:37 AM
Ed something
/i refuse to look up things
October 26th, 2009 at 12:40 AM
McCaffrey? Yeah, he was scrappy.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:42 AM
Honestly, I don’t know how to begin to compare athletes and eras. All I know is, from all that I’ve read, heard and the games (and game film) that I’ve seen, Unitas and Manning are the two best to have done it. Elway is a close third. Then Graham. Then Montana. Then probably Tom Terrific. After that, who knows, although Marino has to be in there shortly after.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:48 AM
I guess my ultimate standard is performance in important games. I mean I would put a guy in the HOF of any sport if he was stellar in postseason and championship games but sub-HOF in regular season games. Who gets it done when it’s one and done? Who performs under pressure? That means the most to me
October 26th, 2009 at 1:43 AM
After watching is Colts-Pats “NFL’s Greatest Games” 2006 AFC Champ Game thing, I have less respect than ever for Rodney Harrison. “Every play the Colts ran that was successful was because I wasn’t there.”
Good Lord, cut him a crybaby-sized towel. Suck it up, shithead. The great teams don’t bemoan their injuries, they overcome. The 2006 Pats weren’t a great team. Pssst…neither were the 2006 Colts, but the Super Bowl isn’t always won by a great team, sometimes it’s just a good team that catches a few breaks. Like, I dunno, the last three teams to win that game…
October 26th, 2009 at 2:50 AM
HA! You all were wrong!! Geaux Saints!!!
/reaallll late to the party
//honestly thinks the Saints offense has been figured out, second rd loss here we come.
October 26th, 2009 at 3:24 AM
One other thing…
Reggie Bush sucks, that is well known. He should be the poster child for not drafting athletes over football players. I’m 100% sure that Reggie is a better athlete than Slaton and Harvin. He’s faster and more agile than both of them. But can he play football? No fuckity-fuck no! I wanted him to prove me wrong four years in a row, but it’s not gonna happen. The NFL game never slowed down for him and that is sad. Dude shoulda been the next Gayle Sayers, not a effing bust.
October 26th, 2009 at 3:58 AM
there was a reason why bush wasn’t drafted 1…
October 26th, 2009 at 4:05 AM
didn’t brady use to call out different girls names before?
October 26th, 2009 at 8:03 AM
there was a reason why bush wasn’t drafted 1…
Yes. Money.
Teams with the #1 pick are under pressure to get that player signed before they draft him or end up with a JaMarcus Russell situation. The Texans made offers to Bush, Young and Williams. Bush and Young wanted more than offered and the Texans opted to go with the guy willing to sign.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:34 AM
i was trying to refer that he’s an ass w/o actually calling him one.
October 26th, 2009 at 2:01 PM
