2009 NBA Preview: Pacific Division
NBA October 26th. 2009, 6:00pm
And this ends the division previews; tomorrow, on opening night, we bombard you with random league ruminations. Previously: Atlantic, Central, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest. Pictured: Ron Artest and suddenly popular model Natalin Avci.
Los Angeles Lakers
Question marks: Once Ron Artest implodes, how will the team handle it? WTF is up with Lamar Odom? What will be Kobe’s desire be like now that he won a title without Shaq?
Andrew Bynum: Looked like a budding star last year before getting hurt; was a foul-machine in the postseason. Can’t seem to stay healthy. Has 17-10 potential … if he stays on the court.
Artest-for-Ariza: Think they lost on this deal. Ariza’s younger, a better defender, doesn’t have a history of crazy, and was a terrific role player. Real winner? Bloggers, who will have a ton of fun with Artest in LA.
Music: Fact.
Stab at the record: 62-20.
Playoffs: Would be stunned if the Lakers weren’t in the Western Conference Championship.
Los Angeles Clippers
Question mark: Can they win with Mike Dunleavy as coach? (Don’t answer that.)
Depth: On paper, the starting five is outstanding. We have issues with the bench, which includes chronic malcontents Ricky Davis and Sebastian Telfair.
Beastly: If Blake Griffin catches on as quickly as most think (are 12-8 rookie projections too high?), the Clippers frontline will include a shot-blocker (Camby) and a guy with better moves than he gets credit for (Kaman).
Music: Flip flam, all over the jam.
Stab at the record: A 30-win improvement is entirely possible. How does 49-33 sound? And the 30-win leap isn’t just because of Griffin; Baron’s healthy, Eric Gordon’s no longer a rookie, and maybe Chris Kaman can avoid injury. At full speed, this team’s got talent.
Playoffs: Yes. And with a dangerous backcourt and a potentially powerful frontcourt, we expect the Clippers to take the place of the Rockets in the playoffs.
Golden State Warriors
Question mark: Does Don Nelson have a clue what he’s doing? Will Anthony Randolph explode like he did in the Summer League? Will Stephen Jackson be traded? What about Monta Ellis?
Also Cause for Concern: Getting Steph Curry shots and burn.
Ugh: Devoid of defense. Completely.
Music: Especially for Don and Stack Jack.
Stab at the record: After 29 wins last year, the talent is there for an improvement. But with so much uncertainty in the front office and with Nelson’s coaching style, we’ll peg ‘em for only 32 wins.
Playoffs: Seems like an eternity ago that this team was a No. 8 seed and stunned No. 1 Dallas. Have enough pieces in place to get back there … but need a serious purging (coach, disgruntled players).
Phoenix Suns
Question marks: Steve Nash turns 36 in February and his stats dipped last season. What does the two-time MVP have left? How will he handle being on a losing team?
Mistake: Robin Lopez 14th in the 2008 draft. The three players selected after him – Speights, Hibbert, McGee – are already contributing. .
What’s not to like: Three terrific offensive players – Amare, Barbosa, J Rich – who feign defense 82 games a year.
Music: This defines their cycles, right?
Stab at the record: Won’t match last year’s 46 victories. Las Vegas has set the over/under for wins at 40, and we’ll go way under. With 30.
Playoffs: Negative. Trending downward. Should deal Amare and Nash and start over.
Sacramento Kings
Question marks: Who will score inside? Is Spencer Hawes a legit starting center in this league? Did Jason Thompson hit his ceiling last year? How frustrated must Kevin Martin be?
Bomb: Rookie Tyreke Evans, who is our pick for ROY. Our lasting memory of him is being unguardable in the NCAA tournament (see below). He and Kevin Martin are a solid foundation.
Yuck: Spencer Hawes was a decent player at Washington. Jason Thompson was a solid performer as a rookie. Andres Nocioni is an average small forward. If every team is healthy in the West, this is the weakest 3-4-5 in the conference.
2010 NBA Draft: Dreaming of Derrick Favors? As nice as Cole Aldrich is in college, could you justify taking him with a top five pick?
Music: Not since C-Webb/Bibby/Vlade were split up.
Stab at the record: League-low 17 wins last year. Should be in the hunt for that dubious distinction again this year. Twenty-two victories would be a mild accomplishment.
Playoffs: Ha.

That is ridiculous. I don’t think Phoenix is going to be elite by any means but I definitely don’t see them losing 50 plus games. Thats nuts.

I dont think Artest blows up this year. the Lakers are the most dangerous team in the league. if Bynum stays healthy they might win 70 games.

I just found out that a couple of my friends went to High school with Kobe’s wife. I heard some amazing stories about Kobe’s wife from her high school days and Kobe last night. I don’t want to get sued though.

If Golden State and the Clips had different coaches they’d be intriguing as hell.
Golden State has the talent, athleticism, and depth to run full-court press for 48 min. If they wanted too.
If Tyreke Evans starts for a full year, he’ll easily lead the league in turnovers.

Come on man, spill it!!!!!!!!
Why is Artest staring at her face? Asshole.
October 26th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Man, I hope not. One of my best friends is a Lakers boner and he won’t ever shut up about them.

Aldrich is going to be a good pro, TBL. If he improved from last year to this year even half as much as he improved from his Frosh year to Soph year he would be the slam dunk #1 pick. I doubt he did, but it’s still fun to think about.

I dont think they’ll stay healthy/focused enough to win 70, but 62-66 seems about right.
Ron is really not going to be as bad as people say he is. I smell a repeat, unless the Magic have really improved like I think they have.
October 26th, 2009 at 6:16 pm
Well he has to talk about the Lakers now that his Doygers didn’t make it further.

Who had to fight for time behind highly paid Amare and Shaq as opposed to say injured Haywood and Etan?
October 26th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
70’s going to be tough, but I think it will be in that range. Also, I agree with the Ron-Ron stuff. Nuts like him are at least good for a year or two. Now by year three he might wearing Jordan Farmar’s skin for all I know.

Not having Portland in the Pacific just seems weird.

simmons says baron’s in better shape than ever. good news, prolly.
o/u on how much baron weighs two years after retirement: 250.5 lbs.

Oh, and am I the only who remember just how “well” Artest shot last season?
(.401 from the field JIC you don’t want to look it up)

Back to the Warriors picture – yes, yes, hell yes, hell no (not even with Bea Arthur’s d***)

it’s not just that artest shot badly (especially in the playoffs), it’s the quality of shots he decided to take. chucker doesn’t exactly do him justice.
October 26th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
was he playing with kobe last year? he isnt gonna be jacking up dumb shots like last year because kobe will show ron ron what psycho really looks like when he garrots ron ron’s entire family for jacking up dumb shots.
October 26th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
Yeah, but if you can’t shoot a better percentage playing off of the best center in the league, playing with the biggest prick probably won’t help your shooting stroke that much.
October 26th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I dont think Ron will explode unless Phil and Kobe are gone from the team. He’s never really been on a winning team that has a majority of STABLE guys on it. Jermaine O’Neal is not exactly a leader, and Cap Jack was the most vocal on that Pacers squad.
October 26th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
who was the rockets other perimeter player for artest to defer to? von wafer? brooks? remember mcgrady was out all year. artest will respect players who are better than him. it may not help his shooting stroke but it will help his judgement.

if you are 6-11, can run and chew gum at the same time, and you have an NBA body … of course you’re a high first rounder.
like him in college, dont know about the pros
October 26th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
TBL: he runs the floor well, blocks a ton of shots, gets in position for rebounds well, is athletic enough to battle for boards when he doesn’t have position. Offensively he’s a great free-throw shooter, plus he can hit that 15-18 footer when the D is sagging off him. He has a tendency to miss some closer in shots, but hopefully he fixes that either by making them or by stopping trying to be so cute with it and just dunk the fucking ball.
I don’t think he’ll ever win an MVP or anything, but I’m sold on him being a very good pro.

Ha. That’s funny. This song is the opposite of funny.

Shadoe Stevens was good on the show about Dave Barry’s life, that starred Harry Anderson.

He has my vote!
I also like how the article not only mentions where he went to law school but also a few of the schools that rejected his application.

Great show. I was just looking it up. You wouldn’t believe what happened to the hot mom from that show.
She went from this to this.
I really hate plastic surgery sometimes.
October 26th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
I think she’s done up that way for a show, portraying a plastic surgery addict (cough, Meg Ryan, cough). Chris Carter just said “when you give a guy new paper.” He’s so street, he’s like a Barksdale in Bristol.

Cole = Chenowith 2.0. He knew what he was doing when he didn’t enter the draft. He would’ve been exposed.
Sexy Dexy will shut him down this year.
