Name me the last great hitter who was a successful hitting coach. Or the last great pitcher who was a great pitching coach(Hershiser doesn’t count, because he sucked). In MLB, the math is simple; being a mediocre hitter/pitcher more often than not makes a guy a better hitting/pitching coach.

Will it work out? Who the fuck knows? The one obvious drawback here is that the MSM and blogs will focus more on his presence than the team itself, especially early on. I can totally see the Cardinals having a Plan B, in case McGwire has a change of heart during ST, or sometime during the season, and walks away.
