2008 The Angels had the best record in baseball, the Phillies had the second fewest amount of wins of any Division winner in baseball. Of course this means the Angels are the defending World Champs because their record says so, no matter what some small sample size says. I hate to break it to you guys, and please don’t go and slam your trusty dusty calculators in the process, but every sport is played for that so called small sample size. Divisions are won in order to get to that small sample size. Free agents are signed in order to get to that small sample size. That is why it’s called the second season. There is a reason the Patriots didn’t have a championship ceremony at the beginning of last year, even though they went through the regular season undefeated. You won’t find the reason in your calculators.

Now that I think about it, another 3 wins in August probably changes the complexion of September, and how the races played out. I don’t know what to think now! Somebody tell me what to think! Need conventional wisdom!

And apparently 10 games is a significant sample size. Glad I stopped by today. Learned a lot.
3 games in the middle of August is a small sample size. The postseason is not a small sample size, it is a season in of itself.
