If it had worked out and they won (which they didn’t, so I really don’t understand why anyone is arguing it “worked”) it would still have been a poor decision. Sometimes you do the wrong thing and it works out. It didn’t even work out this time, and yet people are still defending it.

We can play the what-if game until it’s dark outside. What if Cliff gets trounced around for 6 runs in 3 innings? Then the questions are why start him short-rested? Manual ruined their chances of winning, etc. etc. etc.

Point is that the game was tied at 4 in the 9th and the Phils had a chance to tie the series at 2. The Yanks came through and the Phils didn’t. Bottom line.

Um. I was hardcore arguing how smart the Lee trade was when it happened. Go look if you dont’ believe me. Why are you acting like the entire game would have unfolded the same way? If he’s never tried why would you know how effective he would be? Why when you have one starter who is SO CLEARLY better than your other guys wouldn’t you maximize his use? Why would you have him pitch the ninth with a five run lead instead of the first of a whole new ballgame? I am all for protecting guys but people act like Pitchers have some magic swith that makes five man rotations (which have only existed for a few decades) are necessary and right. And generally they make sense. But this is THE WORLD SERIES. Fucking pitch on three days rest. Try it out. It’s like how wrestlers save their holy shit bumps for mania. It be crazy to fall off a twenty foot ladder every show all year BUT THIS IS WRESTLEMANIA. THIS IS THE WORLD SERIES.

If this is your actual logic they should have started him on three days rest during the regular season just as “practice.” It’s not just getting him in there faster, you are giving up a Lee start (a whole start) if it goes seven by not short resting him. That’s insane.

I think there might be a reason he has never pitched on 3 days rest. Effectiveness?

Hilarious that according to the mainstream media and experts here and other places, Cliff Lee was a back up plan to Roy Halladay 2 months ago. Now, Charlie is an idiot for not panicking and pitching him on 3 days rest.

You don’t change plans mid-stream. The Phillies planned on a 4 man rotation from the beginning of the playoffs.

Oh yeah. The Phils were also tied in the 9th inning, which AGAIN, makes the starter conversation irrelevant. What’s so impossible to understand?

Not erroneous. Hope and expectation are vastly different things. As a Jays fan, all I hope for each year is that the stars somehow align and we find a way into the playoffs. I’m not disappointed when it doesn’t happen because I’m a realist and I knew going in that the odds were against them.
