Jeremy Hermida to the Red Sox: The first big move of the off-season involved old trading buddies, Marlins and Red Sox. Boston sent two young prospects - Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez - to the Marlins for a big-leaguer the Fish weren't planning on rewarding monetarily. According to City of Champs, scouts were very pleased. The Red Sox fired their scouts years ago, so they couldn't be reached for comment. (Boston Herald) (10)

Columbus Blue Jackets: "The Columbus Blue Jackets could leave central Ohio if the team can't fix an economic model that is causing losses of $12 million a year, according to a report issued today by the Columbus Chamber. But a deal to keep the hockey team here and the Arena District alive -- the team and the district generated $30 million in taxes last year -- probably will include asking for public dollars, and soon." What are the chances the public will pony up to keep the team in town? At best, the Jackets are third banana to the Buckeyes and the Crew. Oakland Raiders: "That's why Tom Cable, the controversial head coach of the Oakland Raiders, should be suspended immediately for acknowledging on Sunday that he slapped his first wife with an open hand more than 20 years ago. His admission came after the airing of an ESPN report in which Cable was accused of physical abuse by Sandy Cable, his first wife, and Marie Lutz, who said she dated Cable as recently as January. In the piece, Sandy Cable says Tom Cable hit her not with an open hand but a closed fist." [USA Today] (28)

NBA Referees: A perceptive reader wonders ... based on the state of refereeing in the NBA, how come nothing was made of former Indiana Pacer Haywoode Workman being on the crew calling the Knicks-Pacers game last night? Workman has been out of the league since 2000, but he did spend four seasons in Indiana. In the 1993-1994 season, Workman started the bulk of the games for the Pacers, who lost in the Eastern Conference finals to the Knicks. (19)

Workman has been out of the league since 2000, but he did spend four seasons in Indiana. In the 1993-1994 season, Workman started the bulk of the games for the Pacers, who lost in the Eastern Conference finals to the Knicks.
