Ok Bill, We Get it, You Win
1-liner, Bill Simmons, Media Gossip/Musings November 11th. 2009, 1:15pm
Bill Simmons: We get it, Bill – you’re atop the NYT bestseller list, adult film stars love you, the NYT profiled you, you live in a mansion … yes, you’re bigger than Rick Reilly, and you sit atop the prestigious sportswriter mountain. But are these radio jabs really necessary? As big a deal as you are in Boston, must you drag arbitron ratings into this? Reign that ego in a bit, big guy. [Simmons; Ed. See here for "mansion."]

Bill Simmons is a faggot.
/LJ’d
November 11th, 2009 at 1:20 PM
you live in a mansion
I thought that wasn’t his house
November 11th, 2009 at 1:21 PM
Do we think that was really Simmons house on that episode of Mayne Street??
And does anyone know where to find a pic of his wife??? As crazy as that sounds, I have never seen one and have always wondered how she looked…
November 11th, 2009 at 1:21 PM
Simmons is so thin skinned, its like he doesnt even have any. WEEI was absolutely destroying him last week though, and he was going nutso on Twitter about it. They dared to question whether he made up his mailbag questions.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:22 PM
Listening to his Musberger podcast right now…”Gold, Jerry, Gold!”
November 11th, 2009 at 1:24 PM
It’s not (I’m pretty sure anyways)
I like Simmons. I think most of his podcasts are great, even when he has his friends on, and I think he’s a really good writer.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:25 PM
Fantastic.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:26 PM

November 11th, 2009 at 1:27 PM

November 11th, 2009 at 1:28 PM
i can’t believe three of the trends are applebees and goldan corrall related.
our country has no taste buds.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:28 PM
thought it was clear the mansion item was sarcasm … if not, link added
November 11th, 2009 at 1:30 PM
my bad
November 11th, 2009 at 1:31 PM
Applebees is letting veterans eat free Today. thats why we havent seen Mrejr today.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:33 PM
he must be eating their world famous deep fried, ranch infused riblets that comes with a side of more ranch for dipping…and then the whole plate is deep fried again.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:33 PM
That was a great listen, Mustberger should be on once a month. More old play-by-play guys should be on. He’s had Marv on once a couple years ago, Gus Johnson and Mike Breen, but I’d like to hear more. Kevin Harlan, Jim Nantz, Pat Summerall, even BY GAWD Jim Ross.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:33 PM
I believe Golden Corral is also.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:34 PM
Ha!
November 11th, 2009 at 1:35 PM
Musburger stories were awesome. It was probably my favorite Simmons podcast.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:35 PM
I got one word for you: Slobberknocker
November 11th, 2009 at 1:36 PM
well…that explains the google trends.
i’ll just shut up now.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:36 PM
I like: “Why won’t God heal amputees” better than the parakeet one.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:36 PM
Musberger’s story about The Greek yesterday on The Herd was good.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:38 PM
Simmon’s on Kimmell was boring, non-entertaining, pointless, basically should never have happened. Plus he looks like he’s 40 goin on 60.
part 1
part 2
November 11th, 2009 at 1:39 PM
I don’t like Simmons’ writing. Found him boorish and misogynist on his TV book promotional appearances. Yet, I like his podcasts.
And WEEI’s morning show (Dennis and Callahan) and afternoon drive show (The Big Show) are old boys network type shows. They’re very stuck in their ways and their shtick is very Boston-centric…which is why they dominate in the ratings. The suburban audience—like a Simmons—probably wouldn’t get turned off by the constant noise on that station, which is why the 98.5 FM upstart is supposedly doing well.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:40 PM
his book is all about basketball?
November 11th, 2009 at 1:44 PM
Was it just me or did it look like he’d had a dye job?
November 11th, 2009 at 1:47 PM
i tired of simmons’s schtick, and i don’t like NBA basketball, so there’s really nothing that he brings to the table for me
November 11th, 2009 at 1:50 PM
Bottomless i feel like the same thing has been happening in philly with sports radio. 610wip are the old guard who fly off the handle with every win and loss and has been around forever and really only talk philly sports. The new station is 97.5. the new guys (mike missanelli)are atleast putting on a good drive time show that is now beating the 610 drive time. However 97.5 is a (gasp) espn backed vehicle but it has local guys on it for the most part.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:51 PM
I think im going to have to buy the book
November 11th, 2009 at 1:52 PM
And I thought Minneapolis sports talk radio was bad. It sounds like we have it made here compared to what I read from everywhere else.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:55 PM
What’s this? No more Mix 98.5? My mom is going to be disappointed.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:17 PM
his NBA stuff is just terrible. I can’t stand it. i like his mailbags occasionally, but man, anything with NBA and i skip over it.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:19 PM
@ bear, mix 98.5 moved to 104.1, no more BCN except on the internet.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:20 PM
How’s it going to get interesting, clown?
November 11th, 2009 at 2:24 PM
I’m just saying – shit’s about to get real.

@TBL:
@cracker jack:
Nail, meet head.
The problem with Simmons isn’t his writing–even when his Boston homerism goes over the top, which it often does these days, he’s still witty and clever.
The problem with Simmons is that he has to spend 25% of every column reminding people how witty and clever (and hip, and informed, and rebellious, etc. etc.) he is.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:31 PM
Damn you, [Gravatar image]. Damn you to hell.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:39 PM
Sarcasm detector not working this pm clown, still not sure i get it.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:42 PM
If we have it made with PA and The Common man, I really
don’t want to hear sports talk radio from anywhere else.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:47 PM
I think, and correct me if I’m wrong, clown means that you know Simmons reads your site.
November 11th, 2009 at 2:52 PM
I like Simmons. Even when he pisses me off, which is often, I find myself entertained. I just wish he wasn’t so self-congratulatory. Some of his foot notes in his new book are infuriating.
November 11th, 2009 at 3:06 PM
Anyone else find his comment to Michelle Beadle about she wasn’t “acting lime a women” kind of off-putting?
I’m not a feminist nut and political correctness is one of my biggest pet peeves—but it was rather demeaning. How are women supposed to act, Bill? He was probably joking but its delivery was awkward and come across as insulting, not jovial.
November 11th, 2009 at 3:17 PM
Big Simmons Fan. Not just because I hope he hires me when he takes over the world. The guy revolutionized sports writing.
November 11th, 2009 at 3:26 PM
Yes he absolutely did. Although I think he borrowed a lot of shtick from Norm Chad, and Chad gets no credit for it.
Either way, Simmons is very good, but that doesn’t make him right on NBA topics. His endless Kobe bashing just looks foolish now (2 finals appearances and a title without Shaq) as does his Steve Nash bashing.
November 11th, 2009 at 6:31 PM
Huge Simmons fan myself. Favorite writer. His EPL article after the last World Cup was the tipping point of my soccer fandom and it taught me more about the league than anything else i’ve read. And I find him hilarious.
