Bill Walton Should Definitely Have Punched Phil Jackson
Former Athletes, Jerks, Media Gossip/Musings November 17th. 2009, 12:30pm
At Jim Gray’s 50th birthday party in Vegas (!) last weekend, Bill Walton recalled the time he wanted to knock Phil Jackson out. After a game, Jackson refused to do interviews unless Jim Gray left the room. Gray departed, and Walton filled in. “I should have punched (Jackson) in the nose and walked out,” Walton said. Solid turnout for Gray’s b-day: Muhammad Ali, Larry King, baseball announcer Joe Morgan, Eric Dickerson, Jerry West, Julius Erving, and Don Shula. [LVRJ]

Was Pete Rose there?
/Gray’s a dick
//for that alone
November 17th, 2009 at 12:34 PM
So Jim Gray had a birthday party in Vegas and Pete Rose didn’t show up?
November 17th, 2009 at 12:35 PM
“hey, did you ever hear my story about how i grew up with sandy koufax in brooklyn? true story. seriously.”
November 17th, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Damn you, Jay. Half a touch faster than I am.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:36 PM
What, no broads???
November 17th, 2009 at 12:36 PM
I forget, why does everyone hate Jim Gray again? Is it just the Pete Rose thing? Then why would basketball people have a problem? Geesh talk about holding a grudge.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:37 PM
larry kings been dead for 15 years
November 17th, 2009 at 12:39 PM
Would Phil have used this fist to fight back?

I forget, why does everyone hate Jim Gray again?
I can’t even remember why I hate him (excluding the Pete Rose thing) but I remember how much I hate him when I see him.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:41 PM
The Pete Rose thing is enough. You don’t need another reason.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:41 PM
haha thats hilarious stabbin
November 17th, 2009 at 12:43 PM
because he’s a poofter. a poofter with diseases.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:43 PM
I forget, why does everyone hate Jim Gray again?
I think it’s Gray’s eerie resemblance to Herman Munster from the eyes up
November 17th, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Considering Rose lied to Jim Gray’s face, I would think that puts a different light on what happened.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:45 PM
shouldn’t the Pete Rose thing be forgiven since Rose later admitted he did bet on baseball?
November 17th, 2009 at 12:48 PM
No, no it doesn’t. Pete Rose was being honored along with the other living greats, on the only night that Rose will be officially acknowledged by MLB for the rest of his life. Time and place. If you want to do a “gotcha” bit, or ask him the “tough questions”, I’m sure he’d be glad to sit down, and take the beating. That question had nothing to do with what that night was about, and Gray’s a grandstanding asshole for asking it.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:48 PM
This is an odd place to put this, but, contrary to what I said this morning about Terry Bowden or Tuberville to Louisville, I just had a phone conversation that suggests to me that there is an excellent chance that Mike Leach is going to be coaching Louisville next year. Apparently, CBS is also reporting this, but this is from a diff source.
Very interesting IMO.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:50 PM
Seems like a step backward, at least in terms of prestige…though it would be easier to get to a BCS game.
Just doesn’t seem right though.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:51 PM
The floor beneath JayV’s wall must be completely covered with shit that didn’t stick. And the pulleys on his flagpole are worn out.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:52 PM
So Louisville is going from Petrino to Kragthorpe to Leach? And Pitino is their basketball coach?
/stay classy, Louisville
November 17th, 2009 at 12:53 PM
LMAO…what are you saying Dirt?
November 17th, 2009 at 12:53 PM
They only thing I could imagine Phil Jackson and Walton fighting about would be who ate the last bag of Cheetos.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:54 PM
JayV, only that you speculate A LOT. Also just busting chops about all the Notre Dame Chatter from the past three weeks.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:56 PM
Stoner burn, +1
November 17th, 2009 at 12:58 PM
Dirt…I do speculate a lot…but I also have a LOT of sources. Not always right, but I try and put the info I get out there. I still champion the day Billy G got canned and within 5 minutes I said Calipari was the man, and I was told I was an idiot as everybody else jumped on the Billy D rumors that never had any merit whatsoever.
In any event, I guess growing up in a family of coaches has put me in a good spot to get info.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:00 PM
Walton’s suit might be the most bad-ass piece(s) of clothing ever tailored.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:01 PM
Any truth to the rumor that Pete Carroll goes to the Redskins and Jeff Fisher replaces him at USC?
/actually, just some random shit I made up Saturday
November 17th, 2009 at 1:02 PM
What a
pussytough guy.November 17th, 2009 at 1:04 PM
Actually Jackson would have tried one of those “these are not the droids you are looking for” on him and got away with it.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:04 PM
Heh…that would be a typical Danny boy move though.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:06 PM
I’m home from work sick today… anyone down to play COD MW2 online?
November 17th, 2009 at 1:07 PM
November 17th, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Jay: Nothing will beat your 90% sure Bob Stoops to ND comment turning into a full-blown post within an hour. THAT’S some serious pull.-lol
Now if you can just get Harbaugh to leave Stanford to coach the Bills, I could die a happy man (make that happy to see Ralph Wilson die)
/sorry, but I’ve been studying for my what.cd mid-term. This looks harder to pass than either my fraternity or Mensa initiations
November 17th, 2009 at 1:12 PM
@Jpq…we’ll see what happens with that…if I’m wrong, I’m sure I’ll hear about it, but I’ll admit I was wrong and move on.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:18 PM
“sick”, eh ill?
November 17th, 2009 at 1:18 PM
JayV: I wasn’t mocking you about it. Hope you didn’t take it that way.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:21 PM
wait, Paolo got banned?
November 17th, 2009 at 1:22 PM
Now if you can just get Harbaugh to leave Stanford to coach the Bills
Harbaugh? no
November 17th, 2009 at 1:23 PM
Just looking at Jim Gray makes me want to punch him.
He’s so invasive and annoying that I’m surprised he hasn’t been punched out already. There is a clip on youtube of him interviewing Dennis Rodman and just badgering him by saying things like “you brought all this on yourself!”, to the point that Rodman starts crying and leaving the interview. It’s nothing Jim said that made him cry, but he just kept provoking and provoking.
I wanna knock that rat looking bastard out.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:23 PM
Yes, Hawkeye – “sick”
November 17th, 2009 at 1:26 PM
/fixed for Maggs
//It’s 1:25 and Michigan still sucks.
///2187 days and counting
November 17th, 2009 at 1:26 PM
I kinda doubt it.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:27 PM
Paolo got the boot? bummer, dude’s at least entertaining
November 17th, 2009 at 1:28 PM
Not at all, Jpq. It’s all good.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:29 PM
nobody got banned yet.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:29 PM
not sure. I know the head man asked him to email him. Whatever that means.
Re: Leech
he is leaving TT for sure. He and the AD despise one another and if Louisville opens, he should take it. He will never win big at TT with Texas and OU in his division. He can win the Big East and play for BCS bowls in Louisville.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:30 PM
Now if you can just get Harbaugh to leave Stanford to coach the Bills
Harbaugh? no
irish: I’m at the “anybody but Dick” point now, and I want a younger guy that’s kind of a prick that will get under people’s skin, and Gruden and Tomlin ain’t coming to Buffalo.
that’s just my blueprint. Any suggestions?
November 17th, 2009 at 1:32 PM
Paolo should not be banned simply for entertainment purposes. His posts are hilarious.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:34 PM
Agree for the most part. Except that I hate when he completely dominates a thread (a la the Roundup this morning).
November 17th, 2009 at 1:35 PM
Great, another place to put Bill Walton stories.
My favorite is when he was analyst for the Clippers and he hated the team. Making fun of them every night. Thats where the whole sarcastic schtick started. He would say things like “It’s the Clippers and Blazers tonight in Portland, A HUGE Game for 12th place in the Western Conference, Can you FEEL the EXCITEMENT?!”
Then one night Eric Piatkowski made back to back 3s for the Clips and Walton goes, “Piatkowski is on fire! He should replace Jerry West as the NBA logo!”
Donald Sterling was none too happy and Bill was replaced. Good times. Good times.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:36 PM
I wonder how Walton feels about Jackson nowadays. Back when both were playing they were pretty close. Walton even went up to Jackson’s basketball camp in Montana after winning the ‘77 championship.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:36 PM
Paolo has NOT been banned (yet). Straight from TBL (or TBL Godfather, if you will).
November 17th, 2009 at 1:37 PM
Ah, late.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:37 PM
Any suggestions?
Marty Schottenheimer
November 17th, 2009 at 1:41 PM
Marty Schottenheimer
I didn’t think of him. I’ll grant you he would be good in terms of building and stability, but I’d still like to see a younger guy.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:43 PM
@jpq- i just want to get back to the playoffs. going on what, 11 years now? crazy. Marty may choke in the big games, but he at least gets his teams to the playoffs
November 17th, 2009 at 1:45 PM
Paolo has been better the past few weeks, but he fell off the wagon this morning. Which was made even funnier when TBL said he wondered what the difference was.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:47 PM
irish: I’m with you on that. I’ve been a fan since they had OJ, and my interest in them is the lowest it’s ever been. Sad.
ps: my wife and her best friend were over your way this weekend (first Naples, then up to Armands Circle & Siesta Key).
November 17th, 2009 at 1:48 PM
Speculation certainly is entertaining as well, so we’ll keep it that way!
On with The Mission!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:54 PM
Bill Walton multiple choice:
A) Retarded leprechaun?
B) Abandoned treeman?
C) Abandoned neanderthal — the missing link?
D) Related to Mark Eaton?
E) All Of The Above
F) Other?
Otherwise many say he is a great guy, but his show on ESPN back in 2006 was not funny.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:56 PM
@jpq- not too far away
November 17th, 2009 at 1:59 PM
Well, there’s one thing we can agree on…
November 17th, 2009 at 2:05 PM
Apparently, the SI curse goes back farther than we thought.
