The very good Dr. Saturday (I believe he was Sunday Morning Quarterback at this point) actually did the research on this very topic and found that recruiting rankings have very strong correlations with winning.

Mel Kiper was on the radio this morning in DC killing Charlie Weis and Notre Dame. He just killed their defense. Vinnie Cerrato, closest thing the Skins have to a GM, has a weekly Friday morning radio show. Cerrato defended Weis, poorly. Kiper talked circles around Cerrato about how ND’s defense has zero talent and is terrible. Cerrato came off like a confused senior citizen lost at a mall.

But what are they? And Arkansas and Ole Miss do not recruit with the big boys. They’ll have a good year and pull some good players but to put them in a list of ‘top recruiting schools’ is just incorrect.

I don't know what they are. I only researched the recruiting ranking angle. I had a long diatribe, but this sums it up pretty nicely.

But what are they? And Arkansas and Ole Miss do not recruit with the big boys. They’ll have a good year and pull some good players but to put them in a list of ‘top recruiting schools’ is just incorrect.

going by rivals- texas had the #1 class in 02- they were seniors when they won it in 05. florida #2 class in 03- won in 06. lsu #2 in 04- won in 07.

One of the worst? Go back and look at typical top ten recruiting teams. Chances are one of those teams will win the MNC each year.

Like I said, go ask Arkansas (and Houston Nutt), Ole Miss (under Orgeron), Georgia, Notre Dame, etc. Lots of high ranking classes, no titles. There are better metrics, I’m sure.

so lefty, i was sorta wrong, ok pretty wrong. that’s 7 NCs in the decade from top recruiting-class getters. how far back did your research go?

I was pretty thorough. Just remember, for every champ you’ve got like USC, Texas, etc., you’ve got a Notre Dame, Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn, and on and on and on, that don’t win a NC. Basically, it’s really fuckin tough to win a NC, and recruting class rankings are one of the worst predictors of future championships.
