Bloody Saturday in Oklahoma: Football and Basketball Teams Crushed (Stoops Departure Imminent?)
College Basketball, College Football November 22nd. 2009, 9:30am
Texas Tech 41, Oklahoma 13. The Sooners’ worst loss since a 45-12 thumping at the hands of Vince Young in 2005. Has Bob Stoops mentally checked out? The locals are still scoffing at the thought their coach leaving for Notre Dame. Two weeks ago we thought the Irish would pursue Stoops. They’d be fools not to.
Oklahoma basketball 69, VCU 82. Willie Warren’s shift to point guard took a step back: six turnovers, five assists, 3-for-14 shooting, 0-for-8 from three.

Eh, I dont think Stoops will go to ND. Why go to a place where you’re pretty much a God to a program in turmoil where you’ll be under constant scrutiny? That must be one huge bump in a paycheck in it for him to leave.
November 22nd, 2009 at 9:47 AM
Stoops Departure Imminent?
no. When you say “locals” scoffing at the thought, are you counting the AD and the school president among those locals?
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:00 AM
That must be one huge bump in a paycheck in it for him to leave.
He makes something in the neighborhood of 4.5 million this year, and it escalates. It’s approximately 30 million bucks over the course of this year through 2015.
Plus, he gets the best players, because he’s running an NFL pipeline, especially on both lines.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:01 AM
Thats why I said I dont think he leaves.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:04 AM
I did hear something yesterday that might interest TBL. I heard that Notre Dame was going to make a run at Bill Belichick. Given his disgrace over the 4th down call, he might be looking for a fresh start.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:12 AM
Oklahoma fans aren’t as in love with him as you think. And he’s already taken a trainwreck of a team (Oklahoma when he inherited it) and won a title in two years.
Oh yeah, and I’m still not over our game. If Gary Crowton isn’t fired by the end of the season, LSU fans are going to go apeshit. I haven’t seen this much anger since the Curley Hallman era.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:16 AM
And I just found out that the Oregon/Arizona game was incredbile.
But I didn’t get to watch it because ABC never left the Texas game. What the Hell? I’m watching in New Fricking Orleans to a Texas game and they’re up by 5 touchdowns with 6 minutes left, and they won’t switch the game? What the Hell are they thinking? Are they punishing us because my mom’s cable provider doesn’t provide 360?
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:17 AM
i must be high on crack but i could have sworn i switched to one of the espns and saw the oregon game

I was watching the UK – UGA game. All I have to say is that Georgia has fallen off.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:20 AM
So long as ND doesn’t have any desire to win big games. Stoops lost the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, the 2008 Fiesta Bowl, and the 2009 BCS National Championship game.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:21 AM
Joe Cox makes Jordan Jefferson look like Tom Brady.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:29 AM
And you can say what you want about Les Miles being an idiot. I think that Mark Richt would have figured out that Cox should have been benched after the fourth time he either put the ball on the ground or thrown an interception.
All in the 4th quarter.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:34 AM
What about Rich Rod keeping “Turnover” Tate Forcier in the game until it was out of reach?
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:36 AM
He also gets his team to the big games, has won a national championship, and beats a damn good Texas program about half the time. He also can recruit the shit out of the state of Texas.
Saban’s not available. Carroll’s not available. Meyer’s not available. Who do you suggest that they get?
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:39 AM
Jay, ESPN or ESPN 2 will have regional games from ABC that don’t air in your area.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:39 AM
Gruden
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:40 AM
ESPN2 had Kentucky/Georgia. ESPN had K State/Nebraska and then went to SportsCenter.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:41 AM
He’s off the market for the next 2 years.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:48 AM
He’s off the market for the next 2 years.
by the same rationale, so is Stoops, for the next 5.
Why would he leave 24 million more guaranteed dollars? Maybe for 7 million per over the next 6?
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:49 AM
Do you think that that was just a “message” to the Bills? You can get out of contracts. It reminds me of the pretty girl who tells the loser who asked her out that she has a boyfriend, but she’s really just waiting for somebody else to ask her.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:51 AM
Saban’s not available. Carroll’s not available. Meyer’s not available. Who do you suggest that they get?
Rich Rod.
Yeah, the regional games not on ABC are shown on ESPN or 2.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:55 AM
Again, not when both networks already have games scheduled.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:58 AM
Listen, Gruden is not leaving ESPN for any job this year, and probably not next year. I know you can get out of contracts and the like, but we’re not dealing with a Saban level of slimy here. He just signed a contract, he’s not about to turn around and take up a coaching job, especially at Notre Dame. The whole point of him signing that contract, and ESPN making a big deal about it was to send a signal to all interested parties that he was not available.
Frankly, he’s probably enjoying making bank without having to get up at 4AM in the morning. He’ll coach again, but not for at least 2 years.
November 22nd, 2009 at 10:59 AM
Brian Kelly.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:01 AM
Yeah, the regional games not on ABC are shown on ESPN or 2.
Again, not when both networks already have games scheduled.
I’m with you now. Sorry bout that.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:11 AM
Joe Cox is the worst starting QB in UGA’s history. I think he is the single reason why Uga died this week. The thoought of watching him play one more home game was too much to handle. He makes mistakes that a JV freshman(in HS) wouldn’t make. Just awful.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:14 AM
KC Resident,
All I could say was, “I am 600 miles from Austin and I live in a different state. Why the fuck am I watching them take their seniors out one by one when a BCS berth could be on the line in the other game?”
And I switched to ESPN after the Nebraska game to see if they would go to Arizona, but instead they were in full “AMERICA IN CRISIS: Notre Dame loses” mode, as usual.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:14 AM
Who got the play wrong down there on the goal line? Somebody missed the call. Was it Cox or Ealey?
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:18 AM
instead they were in full “AMERICA IN CRISIS: Notre Dame loses” mode, as usual.
then, you come here, and it’s the exact same. This is the third Notre Dame post in less than 24 hours, and at least the 20th in the past two weeks and a day.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:19 AM
Haven’t read who was at fault yet, but it was fucking hilarious. I tell myself that a 5th year senior would know what the call was, so Ealey must have been at fault, but when that 5th year senior is Cox, anything is possible.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:19 AM
BUT THEY HAVE THEIR OWN NETWORK!!!!

November 22nd, 2009 at 11:20 AM
Biggest program in the country!
/whatever that means, and however you measure it
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:21 AM
I think the proper response is, Fuck Notre dame. Although, Jersey Yo is cool.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:26 AM
Every Notre Dame press conference is nationally televised and then replayed scrutinized on SportsCenter.
Yet I live in Baton Rouge and I have never seen a Les Miles conference on television. Not even the local channels.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:27 AM
I just wish that we could have a little moratorium until after next week. Let’s talk about who is relevant for a while.
We’ll talk about Notre Dame again when they do the actual firing, and then make the job offers. Here’s how I have them going.
First- Obama, 6 years, 42 million (booster revolt, Obama passes)
Second – Bill Parcells 7 years, 49 million (he convinces Miami to match)
third – Bill Belichick – 8 years, 65 million (he passes)
fourth bob stoops – 7 years, 65 million (no thanks)
fifth Nick Saban – 7 years, 65 million (he passes, but only after accepting 1 million cash in a paper sack just to listen)
sixth, Urban Meyer – 8 years 90 million (florida matches)
then they end up with Kelly for 9 years, and 90 million. And he ends up another .500 coach.

//the Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game in a generation, but they’re always the top NFL story
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:28 AM
Looks like the Sooners **puts on sunglasses** were the ones who were Boomered. YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:30 AM
Jay, that’s not really true about the Cowboys anymore. Pats and Colts both get more press, and more slurping nationally (obviously deservedly so).
But Dallas gets a shit ton of undeserved attention. Did you hear they got a new stadium?
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:34 AM
Dirt – I like your list. One thing it has in common with Notre Dame’s list? It doesn’t include Paul Johnson. They’re not going to talk to him, and I have no idea why.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:34 AM
How is that possible? I don’t even watch that much TV, but I’ve seen a Les Miles conference on TV. I’ve also seen a Butch Davis, a Chuck Amato, a Tom O’Brian, a Cutcliffe, and most embarrassing, a Ted Roof conference.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:35 AM
They got burned the last time they went after a GaTech coach maybe?
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:36 AM
Haha. Fuck Ted Roof.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:37 AM
They’re not going to talk to him, and I have no idea why.
he runs a gimmick offense.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:42 AM
That’s beaten them 2 out of the last 3 years, and that has his team at #7 in the country. I guess they can keep their decided schematic advantage, and their pro style offense, and their national TV contract, and take all of that with them to the GMAC Bowl.
Mark Bradley said the same thing in the AJC the other day, and that doesn’t make a ton of sense to me.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 AM
I wondered if you’d smell my sarcasm, but I guess not.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:53 AM
Nah, I got your sarcasm, but there are those out there that take that stance, and I just wanted to get that off my chest.
November 22nd, 2009 at 11:58 AM
The only thing I like more then a “Notre Dame sucks and hasn’t been relevant in 20 years thread” is a “We need a BCS playoff next year thread”
November 22nd, 2009 at 12:06 PM
You know, everybody loses it because Boise State might get a BCS bid and they only beat Oregon. Where’s the outrage that literally a dozen bowls will offer their left nut to a 6-6 Notre Dame team instead of a team with, you know, a winning record?
/you could argue that Notre Dame’s best win is against Nevada
//name a team Boston College beat that’s good (their other “big” win)
November 22nd, 2009 at 12:18 PM
You know, everybody loses it because Boise State might get a BCS bid and they only beat Oregon. Where’s the outrage that literally a dozen bowls will offer their left nut to a 6-6 Notre Dame team instead of a team with, you know, a winning record?
Because a lot of people that watch TV bowl games and pay to see them couldn’t even pronounce Boise correctly, let alone tell you where Boise even is.
I really can’t get my arms around why so many things in life are unfair (rappers being worth hundreds of millions of dollars, Will Ferrell getting $40 million/year to produce crap onscreen, discrimination in our society, etc) and people seem to let it go in one ear and out the other, but the thought of an undeserving Notre Dame going to a bowl game over a more deserving team creates more outrage than all those other things combined.
Who fucking cares?
November 22nd, 2009 at 12:44 PM
yay! Did you hear about his new movie where he goes back in time to stop his grandfather from vacationing in Poland in 1939, then gets stuck there and has a dance off with Hitler, who’s played by Luke Wilson?
/the storyline was just stolen by Seth McFarlane for his new show “Quarky Family!”
November 22nd, 2009 at 12:55 PM
And you could argue that LSU’s best win was Auburn, but there’s no point because that is their only win over a bowl eligible team.
At least ND wasnt a top 8 team as of yesterday morning.
/rocks and glass houses and all that
November 22nd, 2009 at 8:11 PM
TBL, I know you’re invested in this concept of Stoops going to ND….but its not going to happen. Stoops isn’t going anywhere. OU is a much better job than ND.
