a_media6_hiRumors are swirling that the Chicago Bears could be close to bringing in Mike Martz as offensive coordinator. The question is, what purpose does a move such as this serve with just six games left and much overhauling to do, particularly in the receiving department, where Jay Cutler is currently being forced to create magic with a dull assortment of undersized role players?

Plus, we’re talking about Mike Martz here. The answer should be a swift, emphatic no. The guy has proved to be “valuable” once, when he was running the Greatest Show On Turf, a memorable offense packed with more talent than Vida Guerra’s ass. Marshall Faulk was in his beastly prime, Issac Bruce commanded attention, Kurt Warner’s flat top was still black, and Torry Holt was quickly budding into the perfect compliment as the No 2. receiver. They won, and nearly won again. But that was it.

Since then, without a Pro Bowl offense, Martz has been eagerly introduced to the door two times in as many seasons. Doesn’t matter though, chances will always be in abundance. This is the NFL, where Charlie Weis will be back to running an offense just as soon as he’s hoof-kicked out of South Bend.

If the Bears do go forward with the Martz move, we know the productive Greg Olsen (6 TDs) won’t be happy. He’ll be cast aside into the same insignificant role Vernon Davis was limited to while under the exemplary tutelage of Martz last year. Of course, since parting ways, Davis has flourished, becoming one of San Fran’s biggest threats.
