Should Tiger Woods’ Affair Be Discussed During Golf Broadcasts?
Golf, Media Gossip/Musings, Tiger Woods Affair December 16th. 2009, 5:30pm
The Tiger Woods thing is the biggest story to happen to golf ever, perhaps the only golf story that has compelled a mainstream audience. Yet, major networks have uniformly ignored it during golf coverage. “As the scandal over Tiger Woods’ alleged multiple affairs keeps expanding, NBC’s experience that afternoon underscores the tricky lie in which the networks that broadcast golf now find themselves. No single athlete has the power to propel, or derail, his sport more than Woods. He’s the meal ticket, the key to big ratings, and it’s in each network’s interest to stay in Woods’ good graces — whatever that means” Principle? Or future dollars? Can you remember when that bitchin goatee was the most scandalous thing about him? (Time)

What more can be said about it that hasn’t been said, you know, everywhere else. God forbid the commentators talk about the golfers actually in the tournament and walking on the fairway in front of their broadcast tower rather than one, however important he may be to the sport, who is hunkered down hundreds or thousands of miles away in his gated community.

Principle? Or future dollars?
How about a third option: “We’ve had affairs too, and we’d look like hypocrites if we chastised Tiger.”
