The Sun Bowl Can Be Hazardous to Your Health
College Football, Death December 17th. 2009, 2:53pm
Fans of Oklahoma and Stanford who attend the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas might want to curb their drinking a bit on New Year’s Eve … you never know when you’re going to get plastered and wind up across the river in “the murder capital of the world,” Ciudad, Juarez. While the El Paso Times is doing everything it can to let you know the city is safe, the “lawlessness” happening in Juarez is frightening. As a result, the Sun Bowl is not a tough ticket.
Thousands of tickets in the 50,429-seat Sun Bowl Stadium remain unsold, despite a charity drive by the university to have fans purchase tickets for troops stationed at El Paso’s Fort Bliss … In Ciudad Juarez, as drug cartels battle for control of the lucrative smuggling corridor around El Paso, daytime shootings and gruesome mutilations have become common occurrences.
Potentially good new, though! Stanford budding star Andrew Luck could still start at QB for the Cardinal. [Oklahoman, Press Telegram]

It’s messed up in Ciudad Juarez. And from what I’ve read, it’s likely to get worse. I’m a little surprised the drug war hasn’t spilled over into Texas yet.

Well there is a river that separates the two. This helps makes the border slightly less porous.
You could not pay me enough money to live in El Paso.
December 17th, 2009 at 2:59 PM
there was a real good article a month or two ago in playboy about all the shit that goes down in cuidad juarez and how none of it really crosses over to el paso.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:00 PM
Also likely Sun Bowl-related death: getting truck’d by a border patrol vehicle.

It has. It’s just not on the news thanks to Tiger’s roaming penis.
I dated a girl from El Paso once. She was a freak a deak.
Been to El Paso at least twice. The ratio of hot girls to ugly dudes is like 2:1 or 3:1.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:06 PM
Because fans from Oklahoma aren’t used to testicle mutilation or anything like that.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:06 PM
Our government is supporting the M government (financially and weapons). The problem is, there is no good “guy-bad guy” line. The M soldiers have been corrupted by a rival cartel. So it’s really cartel on cartel warfare, with the soldiers and police cashing in on the action.

To an extent, the war has spilled over into Texas…and really all border cities.
But there haven’t been 14,000 deaths from the war in the U.S., as opposed to South of the border.

December 17th, 2009 at 3:15 PM
Boredom mostly. I’ll be out at the bar tonight so figured I’d play since they’ll be on. I like Manning to play 3 quarters but wouldn’t be surprised if Addai doesn’t play at all (mike hart emergence? no). Regardless, I think Indy wins by a touchdown.

New greatest thing to bet on = NHL.
Now that I have said that, I fully expect to lose 100 dollars on it this weekend.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:18 PM
Finally dusted off the account after a super-meltdown on Italian serie A soccer (0-5, one day, cleaned out the account). Went 4 for 4 last week. Terrible way to start b/c now I’m just itching. No way should I be playing tonight’s game but whatever.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:18 PM
If you want some free money start betting against the Pac-10 in CBB. Running out of time though, cuz conference play is right around the corner.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:19 PM
I’ve been looking at NHL. Do you just bet moneylines? The -1.5 goals seems tricky.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:19 PM
torn because i believe they’ll play starters, but it’s thursday night, it’s jacksonville, against a team still trying to make playoffs. if there was a hook, i’d go jags. the o/u is just as diff, 43
December 17th, 2009 at 3:21 PM
Pitino: Usually. The o/u are almost always 5.5 too so depending on who is playing you can make a lot of money on that.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:21 PM

Desert Pepper salsa >>> Pace salsa
December 17th, 2009 at 3:33 PM
Sadly, we’re not as athletic on defense after we lost our walkons. This really hinders our 1-3-1. We’re giving up lay ups every time down the court. And talk about a sophomore slump for Douglass, and to a lesser extent Novak. Our 3 – pt shooting is infuriating.
And the hockey team…
It’s been a rough few months.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:33 PM
agreed.

homemade salsa > anything else.
What i do is get some mild or hot (mainstream hot) salsa that seems tasty, chunky, then add some El Yucateca habanero sauce.
and drink

As an El Paso resident, I’d like to give a shout out to the Daily Oklahoman, i.e. COWSHIT DAILY. And you damn right I’m going to the game, free tickets!

That being said, most of the serious drug/cartel crime does stay in Juarez. El Paso has your normal crimes that you see in a regular big city.

Two 32-oz cans of San Marzano tomatoes. Strain juice
add to blender with garlic, salt, pepper, cumin, chipotle powder, coriander and lime juice.
Dice one white or red onion, chop some cilantro and dice 2 jalapeños. Add to blended tomatoes and enjoy.
This shit takes 15 minutes to make.

December 17th, 2009 at 3:57 PM
no way, you can’t have good Mexi food without cilantro.
@GotG, sub the jalapeno peppers with some milder bell-type peppers and then add diced habenero, so you still get a lot of heat but more depth in taste/spice.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:58 PM

December 17th, 2009 at 4:21 PM
Yeah, not big on cilantro.
Speaking of food…just made the move over to buying local free range chicken and local grass fed beef. Just our first step in trying to consume higher quality food.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:23 PM
Wildcat, are you buying bulk, or a few cuts at a time on the beef? We bought a side of beef last year, and it’s been a lot of fun figuring out what to do with the various cuts.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:26 PM
Cilantro is the gift of gods. I hate all you cilantro haters.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:29 PM
GotG – Two words for you: Nuevo Laredo. That place it’s tits when it comes to mexi food.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:35 PM
Dirtheavy, We’re pretty new to this and going week to week. With the beer we just started out by buying some local ground beef at the start of each week. We eat a lot of chicken with our meals.
Surprisingly the ground beef was about the same price as you would get at a local chain store (Safeway) but the chicken has been a step up in price. However, the freshness and taste has been an awesome upgrade. We’ve also moved to organic milk, fruits and veggies but we still have a to go (i.e. cheese based products, breads, juices, etc).
We’re making slow changes…
December 17th, 2009 at 4:59 PM
I’ve heard that from a lot of people, but I have yet to make it out there.
December 17th, 2009 at 5:03 PM
