Cheryl Cole … why Jon Stewart is good for news … sad snowmobile accident kills three …”that 1937 feeling” … cat summoned for jury duty … if Vanessa Grigoriadis writes about twitter, we’re reading … by recycling, these two plan to pay for their wedding … tough times for freelance writers … “Walk away from your mortgage” … 12-year-old holds up store with a toy gun … doesn’t Harry Reid have to step down? ….
The Gibbs-Theismann-Hammond both was awful Saturday. Good thing Simms-Nantz will be calling the Jets-Chargers game. (NYT)

There’s a talented duo.
Sure, they lost to Tennessee yesterday, but this is cooler than anything that happened in the game.
Pretty cool.

I really wonder where USC goes from here. What kind of fallout will come from the McKnight situation? Who now is the front runner for that job? Do potential coaches wait and see if any bans are put on USC(if any) before taking that job?

“There’s no money in Twitter yet, it’s true,” Evans says, “but that’s O.K. The validation of having so many people listen to you is reward enough.”
Her definition of reward and validation are quite different from mine.

The play in question was kind of weird. I watched the game on FSN PGH and there wasn’t anything conclusive, though common sense told you it was in (kind of like the 2-point conversion for BAL yesterday). Then, after the ruling, a new angle was available that showed the puck.
It didn’t matter though – PHI was up at the time and won handily
January 11th, 2010 at 8:44 am
USC needs to get a head coach in place pronto, or risk losing a massive class.
January 11th, 2010 at 8:44 am
Jets fans crack me up. They won a playoff game but still all there is no the radio this morning is them bitching about how getting that awful announce team was a sign of disrespect. Then some callers have the balls to ask why they are still considered an underdog.
Down.

i wouldnt want to go to usc since carroll is going to the seahawks and theres a cloud over the program
January 11th, 2010 at 8:48 am
Not really, you knew a few old sporties were gonna toss votes Favre’s way. In reality, Manning should’ve had about 25 votes, Rivers 15, Brees around seven and Chris Johnson the token three. Johnson had one of the five best seasons anyone at his position has ever had, but he came up small during his team’s 0-6 start and he had his season during perhaps the best collective year of NFL quarterbacking ever.
Sucks to be him, but it doesn’t really surprise me. He should get a spellchecker for his Twitter, though.

I admit I was way off on the Jets – I knew Cincy was a “weak” division champ that was ripe for the taking, but I didn’t think the Jets had it in them after playing 2nd/3rd stringers for 2 weeks.
January 11th, 2010 at 8:49 am
If i’m a recruit, I’m gone already. I’d prefer postseason play or at least the chance at it. Not sure who comes into coach. Why be the guy who follows Carroll and deals with the shitestorm. Be the guy that follows that guy.
January 11th, 2010 at 8:50 am
Yeah, that angle was shown on the Comcast Philly broadcast, for some strange reason not on the Fox sports Pittsburgh broadcast, which is what is sent to Toronto to get reviewed. Seems wholly unfair and gives a crazy home ice advantage. Youre right, its a good thing it didnt effect the outcome of the game, but it should still be looked at.
January 11th, 2010 at 8:52 am
And honestly neither did Jets fans. TBL remained hopeful but not overconfident during the week, and then happy and content with the victory, but he is in the minority of the fanbase. If they beat SD this week, then they can toot their horn all over the place, but knowing these fans they will whine about nobody believing in them instead of enjoying the run.
January 11th, 2010 at 8:53 am
Really? Saturday night’s the better game, why wouldn’t they send them there? Oh, a New Jersey team’s involved, I see.
January 11th, 2010 at 8:56 am
There can never be enough Cheryl Cole. Never.
January 11th, 2010 at 8:57 am
I just dont know what to do about the AFC. I hate all the teams remaining. Honestly I really can only see myself pulling for the Saints of all the teams left. What a sucky January.
January 11th, 2010 at 8:58 am
I think Leach would be great for South Florida, but they obviously can’t hire him
January 11th, 2010 at 8:59 am
to Notre Dame. Serious.
January 11th, 2010 at 8:59 am
Love JR Smith, you know our history with the guy
Didn’t you cover him in high school or something? What about your boy JJ Redick? I could have swore you said you covered him too
January 11th, 2010 at 9:02 am
How serious is your serious? I think ND has a chance to beat SC in the near future given how things have shaken out.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:04 am
Spencer just cut Tom Sawyer out of his set list in favor of that Lady Gaga medley.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:04 am
Agreed. You know Kelly has been on the phone.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:07 am
yes, covered Smith in high school, know him and his family a bit.
don’t know Redick (but the sister of a girl i used to work with dated him)
January 11th, 2010 at 9:07 am
never.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:08 am
Kyle Prater, big time receiver that was going right to USC after the Army All-American bowl, de-committed and is deciding between Illinois and ND. Kid is a stud.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:09 am
very serious. they recruit against one another. just that usc has kicked their ass in recruiting for about 12 years now.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:09 am
Roeth – Indy played its starters for 2.5 qtrs.
I believe Carson Palmer started the 2nd half in the season finale.
memory jog: 2005, Jets at Chargers (12-4). wild card game. Chargers favored by 6.
Jets win, 20-17 in OT.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:09 am
carroll post coming at noon.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:11 am
Sir Spicious, yea that is too true. Sucks for us.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:13 am
so is the pac-10 now worse than the big east?
January 11th, 2010 at 9:13 am
Ah, the glory days of Martyball.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:13 am
tough times for freelance writers …
/sent from Geoff Decker’s blackberry
January 11th, 2010 at 9:14 am
Discounting the Jets or Ravens would be foolish at this point, they both play a style of football that neither the Chargers or Colts enjoy.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:14 am
How did the Bengals sweep the AFC North? They looked like utter dogpoo.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:16 am
they barely beat the browns the two times they faced them this year…that, right away, should’ve told you they were fluke-tacular.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:16 am
True, and neither the Colts or Chargers can run the ball. Ed Reed sounds like he’s ready for Saturday night:
“I know what’s coming. Eighteen’s coming.”
January 11th, 2010 at 9:31 am
Reid’s gone, hes most likely going to lose in November anyways, he should bounce now.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:32 am
“I know what’s coming. Eighteen’s coming.”
If you’re not fired up by that quote, somebody probably beat the living shit out of your team yesterday.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:33 am
Reid’s gone, hes most likely going to lose in November anyways, he should bounce now.
for a second, I thought you meant Andy Reid.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:34 am
Who’s the CBS B-team? Gumble/Dierdorf?
January 11th, 2010 at 9:35 am
The Colts-Ravens, Manning-Lewis chess matches are always fantastic to watch, even when they get out of hand (see 2007 and 2008). I just hope this doesn’t end up like the 2006 playoff game in reverse. It’s set up for it to.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:36 am
They played all of their division games in the first 10 weeks, when they were actually good.
The Steelers are better then every AFC team that played this weekend, and it pisses me off.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:38 am
Yeah, I know in 2007 they sent Simms/Nantz to NE for NE-Jags Sat. night and then Mini-Perm and Sgt. Obvious to Indy for Colts-Chargers the next day.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:38 am
Who’s the CBS B-team? Gumble/Dierdorf?
Seems like it. But who else does NBC employ with experience doing football play by play? They just have Tom Hammond, becuase they show no other football than SNF and Notre Dame.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:38 am
False. Ravens are better. Just as easy to prove (or disprove).
January 11th, 2010 at 9:40 am
I’m not sure that doesn’t seem like not the right thing to do. I’d much rather have Enberg/Whoever.
Speaking of announcers, vastly underappreciated – Sam Rosen and Tim Ryan. Missed hearing them this weekend.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:40 am
Very true, just like this week they both need to start fast and play with a lead. I like the Ravens chances more than the Jets, but both have a shot.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:40 am
Too bad they aren’t better then the Chiefs, Raiders and Browns
January 11th, 2010 at 9:41 am
I wouldn’t go that far – definitely NYJ and CIN, but BAL and NE are arguable. It wouldn’t matter if the Steelers had just taken care of business and beat OAK, KC or CLE.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:41 am
Don’t know what his contract is at Tennessee but would Lane Kiffin be on USC’s radar? Seems like a natural and I could see a Saban or Petrino situation with him.
You mean attention and feeling self important is not what is important to you.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:41 am
definite PTI topic today: Better chance to win this weekend, Jets or Ravens?
sadly, i go Ravens.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:44 am
I go Ravens simply because it’s really, really hard to beat a consistently good team EIGHT times in a row. On paper, Manning should go three wide every play and firebomb that patchwork secondary, but in the playoffs it never works out that way.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:44 am
Peyton shreds the Ravens D this weekend. I really think the only chance they have of losing in the playoffs is against the Chargers.
Can’t wait for the Saints-Cardinals track meet on Saturday.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:46 am
Given the fact that the NCAA is hovering over the program at the moment I don’t think it would be advisable to seek out a guy that’s setting records for secondary violations.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:47 am
Early over/under for Saints/Cards – 57
Would still take the over
January 11th, 2010 at 9:47 am
Can’t wait for the Saints-Cardinals track meet on Saturday.
Just wait until Scott Fujita gets in there. The Cards offense won’t know what hit them.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:55 am
Can’t wait to see how many DPOY votes Fujita gets this week.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:56 am
no Redick stories TBL? cmon
January 11th, 2010 at 9:59 am
I go Jets.
January 11th, 2010 at 11:23 am
the usc job is fantastic. great money. fertile recruiting ground. great youngsters coming back.
if u cant win there u cant win anywhere. theres no such thing as probation anymore anyway
January 11th, 2010 at 11:26 am
I would support a constitutional amendment banning the 3 man booth. Sometimes, less is more.
January 11th, 2010 at 11:28 am
Sometimes, less is more.
That’s what she said!
/no, she didn’t
January 11th, 2010 at 11:42 am
Kiffin isn’t going anywhere.
