Debunking the Mark Sanchez Myths
NFL, Video January 20th. 2010, 11:00am
1) The Jets win in spite of him!
False. In the last four games – two to get into the playoffs, and the two playoff games – Sanchez is completing 60 percent of his passes. He has thrown two TDs and one pick. He hasn’t fumbled. He’s basically playing error-free football. The Jets are winning because the defense has been phenomenal, the offensive line has paved the way for the running game, Sanchez has brilliantly managed the second half of both playoff games, and the Bengals and Chargers combined to go 0-for-5 on field goals. The Jets didn’t win any games this season in which Sanchez was terrible (Saints, Bills, Patriots). For the “in spite of” statement to be factually correct, the Jets defense would have had to hold a lead late against Jacksonville or Atlanta.
2) If you only throw for 100 yards in a playoff game …
Meaningless. The Jets aren’t asking their rookie QB to throw 25-30 times per game. All they’re asking is for him not to make mistakes, convert a few third downs, and put them in position to win the game. He’s done that in both playoff games. There’s a reason he’s only the 4th rookie QB since 1950 to start and win a playoff game: rookies are mistake-prone. If Sanchez has to put the ball up 30 times Sunday, the Jets will almost certainly lose.
3) His passer rating – 63 – is so bad!
Take a gander some historical “passer rating” numbers. Chad Pennington is 6th all-time. Eli Manning is 70th. John Elway (79.9) and Byron Leftwich (79.6) are virtually equal in the passer rating department. Read into that what you will.
It’s stats like this that prompted the Football Outsiders to compare the rookie season of Mark Sanchez to the rookie season of JaMarcus Russell. Statistically, the seasons are similar in completions, attempts, yards, and yards-per-attempt. Russell bested Sanchez in TD passes! And passer rating! This must mean … absolutely nothing.
(Guess which QB set a few rookie passing records? Rick Mirer in 1993 with the Seahawks. He was never heard from again.)
Of course the Football Outsiders left out two relevant points in the Russell-Sanchez comparison: Russell was a 2+year starter at LSU (Sanchez had one year at USC), and Russell rode the Oakland bench for a year before mopping up for four games in his first year in the pros.
Conclusion: The intense dislike for Sanchez has more to do with a) the fact he went to USC, which was the most insufferable college football program of the 00’s; b) this GQ spread, c) the fact that he’s on the scene and dating models, and d) the nickname “San-chize” that was bestowed on a rookie quarterback after the 3-0 start (why people would waste time hating someone because of their nickname is mind-boggling, but we digress).*
Of course, you know where this is headed: The Colts will race out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter Sunday, and Sanchez will be forced to rally the Jets. What are the chances a rookie on the road in the AFC title game pulls that off? 0.0.
Baltimore’s Joe Flacco threw three picks in the AFC title game last year against Pittsburgh.
Atlanta’s Matt Ryan turned the ball over three times (fumble, two picks) at Arizona in a Wild Card game last year.
Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger threw five interceptions in the postseason as a rookie (two games).
* We could have tossed in the hot dog eating incident, but everyone agrees that was funny.

Sanchez sucks!
January 20th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
Random: This is why Luckovich is awesome.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:04 AM
going to kick back and just read comments…
January 20th, 2010 at 11:05 AM
See, I bet Mark Sanchez has a scarf get-up too. He gets it.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
i’ll be here for 10 mins. fire away.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
I don’t dislike him, I just think he is benefitting from the other factors of his team and managing the game. I know it is natural for QBs to get greater praise than normal for winning, but this is taking it to new heights.
Conclusion: He is a rookie game manager that has made a few 3rd down throws in the playoffs and has been able to limit his mistakes and not pay for the few he has made while the teams he has played can’t make FGs and were stuffed by the Jets D.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
No, Notre Dame is still well above them in that category.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
but everyone agrees that was disrespectful
yep
January 20th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
The Jets defense allowed 10 fucking points and lost. That game was lost due to awful FG issues and Sanchez throwing 3 picks. Why do you keep harping on the Jets’ D in the ATL game?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
umm.. no offense TBL but yeah.. it does
January 20th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
eh, i expected a better post for the hype… which the same can be said about mark sanchez.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
The reason people dislike Mark Sanchez is the undue knob-slobbing he received pre-draft and early in the NFL season. He hasn’t done a whole bunch to deserve the treatment he’s gotten. That really bothers people.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:07 AM
Brilliant post.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:08 AM
None of the reasons above make me dislike/hate Sanchez.
/it’s because he is Mexican
January 20th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
Take a look at Chad Henne’s numbers his first year starting in the same division as Sanchez on a defensive minded running team.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:09 AM
that’s a bingo!
/hans landa’d
January 20th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
agree with the first part … what is the ‘greater praies?’ what ‘new heights’ are you talking about?
is it the SI regional cover?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:10 AM
It isn’t him, it’s the people who think he is the next great QB because of the playoff run.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
Shut it down, lock it up. wilhelm’s done our work for us.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
they’re not much better.
and trust me…after watching flail away against ohio state for four years, chad henne is awful. just awful. he looks the part…but damn…he’s awful.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
I’d say these are opinions, not myths. a Mark Sanchez myth would be that he’s the chupacabra.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:11 AM
I don’t think the dislike is for Sanchez actually, just the Jets’ fan base as a whole. We all know they have gotten this far due to their defense and running game, oh and Norv Turner going all Norv-Turner on us. Posts like this are completely unnecessary and all it does it garner more anti-jet sentiment. On top of that, I believe it’s been revealed that the AFC as a whole was actually pretty weak this year.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
I’m still looking for clarification on ‘knob-slobbing’ and ‘treatment.’ can you elaborate?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
sucking goat blood and how sanchex played QB for most of the season is no different.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:12 AM
He is the current version of Trent Dilfer… Discuss.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
They let Atl drive down the field and left their best player open for a td. The rushing game was actually ineffective and Sanchez was driving down the field. Special teams let them down throughout, the d let them down in the end. Just saying.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
Jay Crawford just said Jerry Rice was a humble receiver. hahahha! I thought Sanchez was a rapist?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:13 AM
That’s the point. Is anyone calling Chad Henne “Han-chise”? Nope.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
So if the Jets manage to beat the Colts…we’re getting a daily post on the Jets from then to Super Bowl Sunday?!
a Mark Sanchez myth would be that he’s the chupacabra.
How do you think he retains all his powers? Gatorade has nothing on cow’s blood!
January 20th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
how? they had a few similar stats in their rookie seasons. and this means … what, exactly? that they are comparable QBs?
so anytime a QB has similar stats to another, they are comparable?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
so THAT matters, but the comparisons to jamarcus russell don’t?
quite selective.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
I expected a lot more “just sayin”s.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:14 AM
Other major reasons for dislike:
His overall media whore-ness which the GQ thing was only a fraction
He plays in NYC (which exacerbates the point above)
That he gets undue credit for a team led by the D and running game.
Looking back at ‘85, people were all hot and bothered by Jim McMahon. Now, people see him as a small cog of that team and that it was really that insane defense, a stout run game led by Sweetness, and some opportunistic play by a punky QB. Sadly, I’d prefer not to wait 25 years to have us forget about the Dirty.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:15 AM
Knob slobbing:
He has a nickname of the “San-chise”.
He is being compared to Joe Willy.
He is being lauded in some parts for managing the game beautifully in the playoffs. If it weren’t for 3 missed field goals last weekend, the Jets would have been forced to pass. Then, we could see how he managed the game. In truth, Sanchez has been neutered because he is not a good QB, right now.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
will one of these help.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
I’d say these are opinions, not myths. a Mark Sanchez myth would be that he’s the chupacabra.
That’s what I was thinking. Well, not the chupacabra part, but the overall gist.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:16 AM
It’s a great nickname!!!!!!
January 20th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
You can do a google search for late April 2009 Jets articles just as easily as I can.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:17 AM
he became a true jet that day
January 20th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
The SI cover definitely has something to do with it. People want to put Sanchez in level of established NFL QB, to do this in my mind he has to come back next year and prove he can throw it down the field consistently. It has nothing to do with comparing his rookie numbers to Manning or Aikman, he is not at the level right now to lead a team yet he is getting treated like it.
We agree on the game manager part, that is all he can do and will be asked to do for this season, so why treat him differently than that? Just enjoy the ride, it is what it is. It is funny to hear Jets fans get defensive about Sanchez and then admit he is a game manager at this point. No one would expect a rookie to be any different in the playoffs.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
That’s actually an apt comparison. Namath was overrated as fuck.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:18 AM
sanchez sucks. Brock Lesnar is on sportscenter right now. i missed part of it but i think he is coming back
January 20th, 2010 at 11:19 AM
i’d say you should just be happy with what you’ve got now and hope for better from sanchez in the future. he has been fine. not good, not great.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
that’s cause you’re not as plugged in to the M3cksic@n mythical creatures underground as me.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
because hes a drunk? thats racist.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:20 AM
It’s because he’s ours. Because for the firts time in like 12 years, we drafted a qb and have expectations for him. For the first time in a couple years, management said “We are going to do this, and stick with it.” And now its paying off, and we are giddy. Stop pissing on our parade.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
are you sure you don’t have to attempt to make out with a sideline reporter in order for this to be true?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
Yes, he was. And Sanchez has to go a LONG way to get to Joe Willy’s level.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
I could care less about Mark Sanchez, except for the fact that he does not embrace the nickname “Dirty Sanchez”. He needs to grow a small moustache and bang a slew of slutty girls. This would be awesome. Much better than “Sanchize”.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:21 AM
are you not up for looking through the TBL archives today?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
Can we re-name Sanchise as “The Chupacabra” from here out?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
Quit having a parade. This should be more akin to a VFW party.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:22 AM
you made us piss on your parade.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
this is funny
January 20th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
THEY GAVE UP 10 FUCKING POINTS!! Sanchez threw THREE (tres for Sanchezians) picks. But yeah, that defense really dropped the ball.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
There’s a much bigger difference between starting in your first year and first year starting. Not many QB’s that start their first year in the league, do very well.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:23 AM
Brock is coming back this summer. the espn dude seemed to have some knowledge of the posrt at least.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
wait wait wait. did they just say the situation is going to be on cnn?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:24 AM
who thinks that? you’re imagining things.
I just think he’ll be very good. starter in NY for a decade. clearly, the jets do too – they traded up to get him. kiper and mcshay had him as a first rounder. so clearly, plenty of people think he’ll be very good.
“next great QB” is laughable. nobody says that about any rookies.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:25 AM
Fine. My bladder is empty on this subject. Believe what you want. Cover your trapper keeper in Sanchez stickers and flowery hearts and ignore reality if it makes you feel better. When you have your Rex Ryan parade in Feb., it will be piss free from my end.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:25 AM

January 20th, 2010 at 11:25 AM

January 20th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Todd Marinovich agrees.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
To guys like Brent Grimes and Thomas DeCoud.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
Revis Island? Seriously, though… I think I have to pull for the NYJ this weekend just in case Favre pulls this thing out on Sunday.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:27 AM
The Jets hadn’t had a quarterback who could manage the game like this in years. Favre was incapable of playing this role. Kellen Clemens showed that he was incapable of playing this role. Even Chad Pennington, whom I think is terribly underrated, could not play this role because he can’t throw the deep ball and it keeps the DBs closer to the line.
It is not inconsistent to say that Jets were smart to trade up for Sanchez and also say that he isn’t a superstar.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:28 AM
done!
correct!
who are these people? i have not seen that. i read about 12 jets stories per day. if you’re talking about ESPN talking heads, maybe you have a point.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:28 AM
i never knew week 1 on the nfl schedule would have so much impact. you can thank the texans for all of this guys
January 20th, 2010 at 11:28 AM
To be fair don’t Kiper/McGay have Bradford-McCoy-Clausen all in the 1st round as well? Doesn’t really help the argument.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
Ditto on Jamarcus Russell.
/just sayin
January 20th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
Can we re-name Sanchise as “The Chupacabra” from here out?
I like it. Got to better than Sanchize. The kid is going to be around for the next 15 years, so he needs a good nickname.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
except for chad pennington.
which is the opposite of a game manager.
thanks for playing!
January 20th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
i do recall some giddy comparison’s to peyton manning’s rookie year, several times, from TBL and other jet fans on this site.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:29 AM
Hey genius, I’m a Falcons season ticket holder. I watched the damn game, like I watch all of their games. The Jets defense was awesome in that game. But yeah, the Sanchez picks (which were bad ones) had nothing to do with losing a game in which your team gave up less than 240 total yards and 10 points.
Did you miss this comment of mine?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:30 AM
actually Marinovich made the playoffs as a rookie, i believe. lost, and was never heard from again.
if sanchez has to throw more than 25 passes sunday, the jets will lose. there’s no point in him throwing a lot – as the #’s above show, rookies who throw a lot of passes in the playoffs make mistakes. it is what rookies do.
so it makes sense Sanchez isnt throwing a lot.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
who the fuck is mel kiper? is that same guy who said he would be at mike williams’ hall of fame induction ceremony? is that who we’re citing as credible sources?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
To say they are winning in spite of Sanchez may be factually incorrect, but with the dominating line/running game, and ridiculously smothering defense, if they had a compentant/above average QB, they would be dominating teams. They don’t win in spite of Sanchez, but because he can’t really do much offensively, they are in close games in spite of him.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
Clemens opportunity came on a shit team, and he sucked anyway. Favre tried to be favre with a bad wing. pennington was fucking great for the jets when he wasn’t playing with an injured shoulder. dude won playoff games.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
Browns traded up for Quinn, he was a first round projection
/FML
January 20th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
which is the opposite of a game manager.
No its not. With Pennington’s arm being week DBs were up in press on every single play which signifcantly cut down on running space. Having the threat of throwing the ball more than 15 yards is critical to the success of the Jets running game.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:32 AM
No, it’s not. It’s simply been inconsequential in the playoffs thus far. Jets fans had better hope they don’t get behind more than one score at anytime during the game.
Then we’ll find out just how meaningless his throwing is.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:32 AM
actually Marinovich made the playoffs as a rookie, i believe. lost, and was never heard from again.
Lost on the road to KC. I can’t exactly remember, but I don’t think he was even the starter for most of that year.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:32 AM
Myth #4: Sanchize cannot dunk.

January 20th, 2010 at 11:32 AM
Im glad i dont have to say that my team will most likely lose if he throws 25 or more passes.

January 20th, 2010 at 11:36 AM
Dont forget that Superbowl they won in week 2
January 20th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
I said this a few weeks ago, but if the Jets have the best rushing attack in the league, and the best defense in the league, why aren’t they an elite team?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
Clemens opportunity came on a shit team, and he sucked anyway. Favre tried to be favre with a bad wing. pennington was fucking great for the jets when he wasn’t playing with an injured shoulder. dude won playoff games.
This all proves the point. Pennington hurt his shoulder like 6 years ago.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:37 AM
Sanchez is in the bottom 1/3 of NFL starting QB’s right now but that’s good enough for his current team. He has an upside of maybe being a top 15 guy and a downside of becoming a career back-up after the next 2-3 years.
Revis should have gotten the SI cover since he is the team’s best player. I also would have supported a Jones/Greene cover. Or a cover with the entire starting D. Or a cover with Rex Ryan. If they all declined, I guess Sanchez would be ok.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:38 AM
they have an inexperienced, over his head qb throwing to droppy WR’s.
and their coach smells like an old couch.
/love the guy tho
January 20th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
Started the final game, then started the playoff game and threw 4 picks. But he was still highly touted.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
Shaun Rogers dunking > The Chupacabra dunking
January 20th, 2010 at 11:39 AM
GOTG: Did you see my post. And I bet there was a lot of us that said, even though ATL was banged up, it was going to be a tough game and the defense was still going to bring it. Sanchez had some bad picks, I’ll admit… but he also had some pretty money drives.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:40 AM
BECAUSE ONE THROW CAN FUCK IT ALL UP. ONE THROW. JUST ONE.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:40 AM
Glad to see that joke isn’t old yet. You keep at it CJ.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:42 AM
So he is a liability if he throws >25 times
January 20th, 2010 at 11:42 AM
Because they went 9-7 and got their 8th win after the Colts laid down?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:42 AM
really? jets went to the playoffs in 3 years ago with pennington, and that was after his major shoulder injury.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
Can we leave Chad out of this? Please? It’s awkward.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
Didn’t the Jets destroy the Bucs without Sanchez playing….Clemens could do just as good with that D.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
Of course the Football Outsiders left out two relevant points in the Russell-Sanchez comparison: Russell was a 2+year starter at LSU (Sanchez had one year at USC)
Still not relevant. Cassell never played at USC, had a good year doing no more than expected for one year at NE, then showed his true colors when asked to be a real QB.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
But why does TBL fault the D in that game? If you only give up 10 points, you should win every time. It was the lack of offense and special teams, not the defense.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:44 AM
Upon further reflection, shouldn’t it be El Chupacabra?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
experience isn’t relevant? good to know, Ill.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
Just think its funny now because that team didnt think they had a chance at playoff success early in the year, even the coach didnt think they could make the playoffs a month ago. Its funny, haha, laugh a little. Your team is playing for the AFC title this week. Have fun with it.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
I love all the hate that the Jets are getting. Keep it up. But even as a die hard season ticket holder i don’t think the Jets have a chance this week.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:45 AM
So he is a liability if he throws >25 times
I’d say between him on one end and Braylon Edwards at the opposite end, it’s a liability whenever the Jets decide to pass!
Sanchez is a good QB. Better than Leinart (not saying much), but not as good as Palmer was when he started out. But he’s the weakest of the four starting QBs on Sunday. And it’s going to take him some time to reach Top 10 level.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:46 AM
tbone – see the above stats: Rookie QBs who have to throw 25+ passes on the road in the postseason all make mistakes.
see Big Ben, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco. it’s because they are rookies.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:48 AM
(1) Since when did being a “game manager” become a bad thing if you’re doing the job? Bart Starr is in the Hall of Fame being a game manager.
(2) I cannot believe people use the guy’s nickname as a reason for hating on him.
(3)
85 was the one year McMahaon stayed healthy for a big chunk of a season and his presensce did make a significant difference on that team. They were a different team with him at QB.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
really? jets went to the playoffs in 3 years ago with pennington, and that was after his major shoulder injury.
I don’t want to be trashing Pennington, but that team had a very good D and didn’t beat a single team that was over .500 other than the one blood feud against the Pats. They were in the bottom half of the league in offense and a big reason was that Pennington couldn’t even threaten the deep ball.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
it’s relevant as fuck.
which is why everyone’s ragging on sanchez. despite your hatred for the FO guys, they did produce the study on experienced college QB’s and how that translates into NFL success. im sure you’re familiar with the names…peyton, rivers, eli, etc.
sanchez has started fewer games when you combine his NFL experience (preseason and postseason included) than rivers did in college.
what does this mean? this means that sanchez hasn’t had the time to learn how to read defenses (obviously…20 INT’s) or get a feel for playing in the pocket and has never truly gotten adjusted to game speed at the COLLEGE level, let alone the pros.
again…none of this is a death knell. he could still be good, it’s just the historical odds are stacked seriously against him.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:49 AM
I am. Your just a pats fan. I have disdain for anything you type. You’re still my homegirl.
Shit, I’ll make it easy for you. They stop ATL on that last drive, game over. They stop Jacksonville on their last drive, game over. 2 times versus teams the Jets had beat, they needed the d to knuckle up and get a stop, and they didn’t. Hence, they get the blame for those losses.

As Lefty said earlier, the reason the Jets aren’t elite is because of the QB. They have the best running game and defense in football. usually the team with those two things, you finish at 12-4 or better. This year the Jets didn’t. Why was that? This is all that I’m saying. Sanvhez is okay. Not great, not horrible, but he’s nothing more than that. Again, if the Colts weren’t the biggest bunch of bitches in the NFL, the Sanchez would be on the beach in SoCal right now and Jets fans would be wondering if he was going to pan out. Now they think they have the next top-10 QB.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:51 AM
See Great Defense and Good Running Game. Also it was Tampa Bay last year
/Made a 20 Dollar Bet with friend that Tampa Bay makes the playoffs sometime within the next 2 years. Most homer bet I’ve ever made in my life
January 20th, 2010 at 11:51 AM
it’s not a bad thing to be a game manager.
but the hype and press should be adjusted accordingly.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:52 AM
El Sanchupacabra
January 20th, 2010 at 11:53 AM
Jets fans, in general, in general. I’ve never doubted him. Ever. Not once this season. Pissed, yeah. But I’m still happy with him.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:53 AM
experience isn’t relevant? good to know, Ill.
I’m just giving you an example of a QB with no gametime since HS who won in his first NFL season. 11-5, i think.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:53 AM
Can we end the thread with this? Please?
January 20th, 2010 at 11:54 AM
This alone is almost making me root for NYJ. You have to admit, the irony would be great.
Still can’t do it, though — Peyton v Brees for me.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
Didn;t the Bucs beat the number 1 team in the NFC with Drew Brees playing? In N.O., that argument holds mad water yo.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
Offense plays like shit for half of the game. Check
Defense plays like shit for 7 minutes. Check
Definitely the defenses fault.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:55 AM
Sanchez doesn’t speak a lick of spanish, right? that’s what I thought I heard, anyway. I’ll stick with The Chupacabra.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:56 AM
January 20th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
if sanchez didnt suck so much ass, the falcons and the jags wouldnt need a last minute drive to win the game.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
100% agree. The irony would be unreal. I would like to see Minny ahead of NO just because I hate NO fans who come to ATL and yell “who dat” over and over.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:57 AM
that’s a bad argument. when your defense holds a team to 10pts, you should always win. doesn’t matter when the and how the 10pts are scored. you need as an offense to get 11.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
Mizerle -
Good thinking if he doesn’t speak spanish.
Tony Gonzalez couldn’t speak spanish so he took classes to become more marketable to the latino population. And then he went to Atlanta. He needs a new agent.
January 20th, 2010 at 11:58 AM
i like jay until he starts talking about the saints. then i cant stand the saints and i hope the vikings make their ass blee*d this weekend
January 20th, 2010 at 12:00 PM
I dont see why you guys are all worked up over the ATL game, unless you live in Indy a regular season wins/loss isnt that important in the grand scheme of things.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:00 PM
I think it would be La Chupacabra if we wanted to get grammatically correct.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:01 PM
Georgia is right by Florida where I hear there is a few latino people.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:01 PM
ATL has a shitload of spanish speaking folks.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:02 PM
Mark Sanchez was one of, if not the worst starting QBs who lasted the whole season (if you do not take this statement as a fact, i can argue it further).
He has played *well* (as in well enough to not cost his team any games) in the playoffs but nothing that says superstar.
So TBL, is your point that he has not been so superbly crappy that he could eventually become a top 15 QB? Sure, I agree with that.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:02 PM
Were you at the Monday nighter a couple of years ago, that was the day Vick got sentenced (and the day before Petrino left)? Awful awful awful. The Dome was 65+% Saints fans, and they were singing songs like “Who let the dogs fight? Vick, Vick Vick”. I’m not even a Falcons fan, and that shit made me sick.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
Offense plays like shit for half of the game. Check
Defense plays like shit for 7 minutes. Check
Definitely the defenses fault.
Add special teams sucking and make that offense sucking for the entire game, and you are 100% correct.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
Mark Sanchez and Matt Stafford had almost the same numbers this season.
Sanchez has a great OL, the best running game in football and the top defense in football. He also throws to a second year TE and a WR who’s one of the best in the game when his head is into it.
Stafford has a terrible OL, the 24th ranked running game in the league and the worst defense in the NFL. He threw to a rookie TE for 9 games before the rookie tore his ACL. He threw to a top 5-6 WR in the league who played with a badly injured knee for 2/3 of the season and even missed a few games.
Can you guess who’s team is in the AFC title game and who’s team is picking second in April?
Also, I don’t hate Sanchez. I don’t care that he played for USC, did a GQ spread or has a snappy nickname. What I hate is the unnecessary, hyperbolic praise bestowed upon him as someone who’s more than simply a “game manager.” Honestly, I only read it here at TBL. No other mediums.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:03 PM
No dude, sorry, the Jets were winning the game 7-3. D needs to knuckle up one more time and make a stop. The running game was getting plugged up and Sanchez still had a decent game. Ok, I’ll blame the special teams. I’m not too stubborn. But still, the d let Atlanta have two very long drives to end the game.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:04 PM
That was a game they should’ve won, and a win there eliminates the need to have the Colts lay down in week 16.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:05 PM
sorry, dude, you couldn’t be more wrong on this. watched the game, the jets left too many points on the field.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:07 PM
so because the jets d was on the fucking field all game because your offense sucks so damn much, its their fault for maybe getting tired and giving up 10 points when you couldnt score 11?
jesus. you know i was 50/50 on rooting for karmah this weekend but i hope you lose 55-0
January 20th, 2010 at 12:07 PM
jersey-if yankees lose a game 2-1, and cc allows those 2 runs in the 8th inning with a 1-0 lead, you blaming cc for not knuckling down?
January 20th, 2010 at 12:09 PM
Look. All I know is, my favorite team is in the AFC championship against a team they already beat. They are 60 minutes from going to the last dance. Sanchez, to me… and that’s all that’s really matters, looks like a stud qb that we’ll have for the next 10 years. Hate him, call him a game manager, do whatever the fuck you want I don’t really care. The Jets are on the verge of doing something awesome for the first time in a while and that’s all that really counts.
/drops mic
//goes to get some sushi
January 20th, 2010 at 12:09 PM
Mark Sanchez has returned to glory.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:09 PM
“Who let the dogs fight? Vick, Vick Vick”.
That’s funny!
January 20th, 2010 at 12:09 PM
isnt the all time points against average like 11 or 12 points a game? you gave up 10!!! you could have had baltimore’s 2000 d and you would have lost that game!
January 20th, 2010 at 12:10 PM
This line of thought amazes me. Offense scores 3 points, defense allows 10 points, yet the defense is to blame. I guess we have to agree to disagree.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:10 PM
Isn’t the reason people hate Sanchez because he gets the press of a marquee QB but played, this year, like Pennington with slightly better rotator cuffs and tail-pulling potential? His highest appearance on the NFL Leaderboard is under “Passes Intercepted” (tied for 2nd with the quarterback of the Detroit freakin Lions). But to the casual fan he’s a marquee name.
Or is it because he kind of looks like Uncle Jesse?
January 20th, 2010 at 12:10 PM
To be fair, Stafford is going to be a stud.
Also, please — no more comparisons, indirect or otherwise, between Calvin Johnson and Braylon Edwards.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:12 PM
agree…if the lions don’t get him killed.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:12 PM
Losing by 15+ to Indy is something awesome?
January 20th, 2010 at 12:12 PM
I thought Tony Gonzalez was black. I think his heritage is from some african island that must have been conquered by spain or portugal or some shit cause everybody’s last name is rodriguez or gonzalez
January 20th, 2010 at 12:13 PM
TBL, you’re the one who did this, aren’t you?
January 20th, 2010 at 12:16 PM
That may be too big of an “if.”
January 20th, 2010 at 12:16 PM
As I Lions fan, I really hope so. But damn if my hope hasn’t been shat on before by Andre Ware, Charlie Batch and Joey Harrington…. and pretty much every other draft pick.
It was tough comparing Johnson to Edwards, but it had to be done. I’m also a Michigan fan (throat chops spencer096), so it’s a bitch to watch Edwards play like this and act a fool in personal life.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:19 PM
Stafford has so much talent plus he’s a smart dude. I just hope the Lions can put an offensive line around him and do so very quickly. He has the moxy to stay in the pocket and get drilled to make a throw, but a QB can only take so many of those and he took a ton of shots last year.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:20 PM
I can name my kid Patrick Adam Tyler St. Ours. It’s just crazy enough to work!
January 20th, 2010 at 12:20 PM
cowherd just teased this story (Sanchez-Russell). eager to hear his take.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:22 PM
90% locked in for a trip to miami for SB week (at least a couple days). no ticket, but would rather watch it on TV anyway.
if the jets win, there will be a TBL gathering … somewhere.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:23 PM
cowherd just teased this story (Sanchez-Russell). eager to hear his take.
he’s gonna just re-read the post
Hi Colin!!! See you at Morton’s in West Palm in a couple weeks! I heard your ad on the radio last hour!!
January 20th, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Congrats on beating Curtis Painter. That said, I am the biggest Jets fan on Earth this weekend. I want to see them in the Super Bowl more than you do.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:26 PM
I think it’s sad that people on here listen to guys like Cowherd and the two Mikes.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:26 PM
Are you going if the Jets lose?
January 20th, 2010 at 12:27 PM
ill – im at home all day. the 90210 episodes are in the later college years – not very good. nothing else on TV.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:29 PM
Cleveland?

January 20th, 2010 at 12:30 PM
Agreed
/The Jewish Mike is racist’d
January 20th, 2010 at 12:31 PM
TBL – you run a blog and the economy’s in the shitter. Hire some poor bastard to watch/listen to that nonsense for “important” updates. Then you can devote all of your focus to eliminating the BCS.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:31 PM
ill: I catch Cowherd when I’m in the car (like I was earlier), or if I’m home, I’ll maybe watch/listen on ESPNU while I’m on the computer. The Mikes I stopped completely about 18 months ago. Cannot take them anymore
btw (+spencer): I’m back from before, so I’ll take the two majors bet (still won’t concede he gets the five he needs anyway-lol)
January 20th, 2010 at 12:32 PM
Just make sure that Aubrey is there.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:32 PM
Cowherd basically laughing at the Russell-Sanchez comp, fwiw.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:32 PM
cowherd: “I’d argue Sanchez throws the ball on the run as well as just about anybody in the league.”
January 20th, 2010 at 12:34 PM
ill – if the economy’s in the shitter, how am i ‘hiring some poor bastard’ to stay home and watch TV all day?
January 20th, 2010 at 12:36 PM
cowherd: “I’d argue Sanchez throws the ball on the run as well as just about anybody in the league.”
I feel a Steve Young comparison in the near future.
jpq – I’ve given up on sports radio in the morning all together. I now listen to classical music radio. This month’s focus is on Mozart! It really does help with rush hour traffic.
January 20th, 2010 at 12:38 PM
ill: “Soothing the Savage Beast” -lol
January 20th, 2010 at 12:39 PM
TBL – I meant to put “successful blog” in that statement. And because you currently have that, parlayed with a high unemployment rate, someone is certainly desparate enough to take $12/hr to watch crappy shows for possible breaking news. Or just do what everyone else does and hire an intern, paying with “experience.”
January 20th, 2010 at 12:41 PM
surely you put a little money under the mattress from all the anti-BCS and Tiger Woods-gate pageviews from December. or you could fire Jerry O’Connell or Pat Forde or whoever BBoB is and pay for quality?
January 20th, 2010 at 12:45 PM
Did your boyfriend get you into that.
/the only people i know that listen to that are ghey, like actually, not in the normal insulting way
January 20th, 2010 at 12:48 PM
I think you mean “gay” not “ghey”.

StBear, I thought that word set off the TBL smut-o-meter and got your comment modded. Guess not.
January 20th, 2010 at 1:01 PM
you actually have to know what’s going on to appreciate classical music.
if you understand harmony, that shit is the best. i could listen to bach and beethoven for days.

January 20th, 2010 at 1:04 PM
no problems here, man. you need to lighten up a bit. negatory on going to Miami…unless I score another work trip. costs too much money and will take too much vacation time from work. sorry to disappoint and I’ll go ahead and concede my internet manhood to you if the lack of my presence there requires it. I honestly would like to go. I found out this morning that may actually be in Haiti that week before and after the SB with work.
January 20th, 2010 at 1:05 PM
as you should.
January 20th, 2010 at 1:06 PM

January 20th, 2010 at 1:09 PM
part of the trade, jpq. along those lines, don’t let TBL crash at your crib for the SB.
January 20th, 2010 at 1:11 PM
OK, I know why you’ll be in Haiti but what do you do?
January 20th, 2010 at 1:11 PM

structural engineer. my work just asked for volunteers in case the people running things down there still felt like they needed some more help. I think most of our responsibility would be general help (handing out food, water, medical supplies, and whatever else), but they may need some technical advice if these aftershocks keep up.
