ufc-109-posterThe main event this Saturday is between Randy “The Natural” Couture and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman. These are two legends of the sport who were originally supposed to meet at UFC 17 in 1998. The bout was canceled when Couture went down with an injury. Mark Coleman went to Japan and it looked like this fight would never happen.

Well, never say never, fight fans because these two are going to get it on Saturday in the oldest match up in mixed martial arts history. (Probably true.) Couture Coleman are a combined 91 years old. Can you imagine? These guys are ancient, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the fight.Couture and Coleman have traveled very similar paths recently to get to this fight.

Couture went the distance twice last year including an epic fight against fellow senior circuit fighter Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. (At least it seems like Nogueira is wicked old.) Before edging out Brandon Vera in his last fight, he lost two straight including a fight against Brock Lesnar. Coleman won his last bout against Stephan Bonnar after losing two straight. The first loss was against Fedor Emelianenko.

Coleman will come in ready to fight and hopefully this doesn’t turn into a wrestling match. I’m cautiously optimistic about this fight, but I think Randy Couture gets the win by TKO.

In the younger division, Chael Sonnen will fight Nate Marquardt for a chance to get beat up by Anderson Silva. This is a promising contender fight and Sonnen has been doing his best to look past it, constantly talking about how Anderson Silva hasn’t really done anything impressive. I’ll take Marquardt by TKO in the fight of the night.

If pure animosity is more your thing, the PPV kicks off with Matt Serra and Frank Trigg. Serra and Trigg’s best days are behind them, but this should be a fun fight. Serra should be able to handle Trigg, but I’m not sure if he’ll finish him. This will probably be Trigg’s last fight in the Octagon.

Mike Swick and Paulo Thiago and Damien Maia versus Dan Miller. Both match ups feature guys just stuck in the middle of their divisions. They should also be decent fights. In case you haven’t figured, I think this will be a good card. Maybe everyone just wants to impress Randy. I’m not sure.

The night kicks off with two free perliminary fights on SpikeTV at 9pm.  Justin Buchholz vs. Mac Danzig  and Melvin Guillard vs. Ronnys Torres are there to wet your appetite.
